The common belief of some linguists that each language is a perfect vehicle for the thoughts of the nation speaking it is in some ways the exact counterpart of the conviction of the Manchester school of economics that supply and demand will regulate everything for the best. Just as economists were blind to the numerous cases in which the law of supply and demand left actual wants unsatisfied, so also many linguists are deaf to those instances in which the very nature of a language calls forth misunderstandings in everyday conversation, and in which, consequently, a word has to be modified or defined in order to present the idea intended by the speaker: “He took his stick-no, not John s, but his own. ” No language is perfect, and if we admit this truth, we must also admit that it is not unreasonable to investigate the relative merits of different languages or of different details in languages.The primary purpose of the passage is to analyze an interesting feature of the English language refute a belief held by some linguists show that economic theory is relevant to linguistic study illustrate the confusion that can result from the improper use of language suggest a way in which languages can be made more nearly perfect

The misunderstanding presented by the author in lines 19-20 is similar to which of the following?

I.X uses the word “you” to refer to a group, but Y thinks that X is referring to one person only.

II. X mistakenly uses the word “anomaly” to refer to a typical example, but Y knows that “anomaly” means “exception.”

(A)Several drugs that cure those suffering from loxemia also cure those suffering from very common illnesses.

(B)Most of those who contract loxemia also contract another illness concurrently.

(C)Most of the drug companies that manufacture drugs that cure rare diseases do not manufacture drugs that cure loxemia.

(D)A sizable number of people are afflicted with one or another rare disease even though each rare disease afflicts only a small number of people.

2.The tomb of a warrior killed in 1501 bears a sculpted portrait depicting him dressed for battle.Some historians attribute the portrait to an artist from that century, but of the many references to the tomb in surviving documents, none that predates the 1800's mentions the portrait.The portrait is therefore more likely the work of a much later artist.Which of the following, if true, would also support the conclusion of the argument if substituted for the evidence given concerning the portrait?

(A)The portrait of the warrior was commissioned by the family of the warrior's widow.

(B)References in surviving documents mention that an artist was paid in 1525 for an unspecified number of works for the church in which the tomb is located

(C)The warrior is depicted

A volunteer uses a truck to pick up donations of unsold food and clothing from stores and to deliver them to locations where they can be distributed. He drives only along a certain network of roads.

In the network there are two-way roads connecting each of the following pairs of points: 1 with 2, 1 with 3, 1 with 5, 2 with 6, 3 with 7, 5 with 6, and 6 with 7. There are also one-way roads going from 2 to 4, from 3 to 2, and from 4 to 3. There are no other roads in the network, and the roads in the network do not intersect.

To make a trip involving pick-ups and deliveries, the volunteer always takes a route that for the whole trip passes through the fewest of the points 1 through 7, counting a point twice if the volunteer passes through it twice.

The volunteer s home is at point 3. Donations can be picked up at a supermarket at point 1, a clothing store at point 5, and a bakery at point 4. Deliveries can be made as needed to a tutoring center at point 2, a distribution center at point 6, and a shelter at point 7. If the volunteer starts at the supermarket and next is to go to the shelter, the first intermediate point his route passes through must be

车行路上万千事,件件应在预料中;

变道行车看标记,行停头脑应灵光;

若遇弯道先减速,减速减档油全松;

超车道上不减档,减档停车靠边弄;

弯道快行莫急刹,急刹方向必反弓;

行近坡顶油减半,判明路情通不通;

前途不明莫急行,复杂路况别瞎懵;

各种情形道不尽,四十码内走始终;

能行则行莫强行,变道后视打灯光;

PART ONE

Questions 1-7

. Read these sentences and the instructions that follow.

. Which method does each sentence describe?

. For each sentence mark one letter (A ,B ,C or D) on your answer Sheet.

Example

You can dictate a message almost anywhere at your convenience.

Answer: B

1. You speak, while your secretary types down your words.

2. You have to speak slowly and very clearly.

3. One of these methods can be used when you are in a hurry.

4. While dictating ,you use some tapes.

5. One of the disadvantages of this method is that you are totally strange to the transcriber.

6. The dictation is done with your speaking, a machine s recording, and your secretary s transcribing.

7. The machine records your words and then provide the tranion.

A. Dictation to your own secretary-“live” dictation, taken by a person who becomes familiar with your dictating characteristics.

B. Dictation to a machine, with your secretary transcribing.

Inexpensive cassette recorders provide great flexibility in dictation.

You can dictate in the office, at home, in an automobile, in an airplane, and in any out-of-the-office situation. Your dictation tapes can be transcribed by being played back on modern transcribing equipment.

C. Dictation to a machine, with a word-processing center providing the tranion in this case, the transcriber will probably not be familiar with your dictation manners and peculiarities.

D. Other dictation methods, such as by telephone calls or by direct secretarial tranion at the typewriter. These methods are not routine but are used typically in “rush” situations. They require a slow voice speed and clear pronunciation.

PART TWO

Questions 8-12

. Read this text about electrical power in Canada.

. Choose the best sentence from the list A-I to fill each of the blanks.

. For each blank

Questions 61 - 65 are based on the following passage:

“It’s not what you know but who you know that counts.” People who get on in

life may be successful not because they deserve it, but because of influential

friends or the right background. This is the widespread belief it is a

comforting belief too. If your boss strikes you as incompetent, it is tempting

to believe that he only got the job because his father pulled some strings And

yet, if we can get what we want by ’having a word’ with so-and-so, or by

getting so-and-so to put in a good word for us, which of us would not take

advantage of the opportunity? Often it is quite harmless. For instance, when

Miguel went with Julia to visit Michelle in hospital, he bumped into someone

he knew, a doctor who had been at medical school with his father. As a result

of this chance, Miguel was able to find out a great deal about Michelle’s

condition. At the other extreme it can be very destructive. I once met a

brilliant young engineer who worked in a chemical plant. Because of her

knowledge and experience, she should have been promoted to Production Manager.

Instead, the job went to a man who was totally unsuited for the post. Every

one knew that he only got it because he was politically acceptable to his

superiors. This injustice demoralized the young engineer and many of her

colleagues. It also meant that the factory was much less efficient than it

could have been.

All the same, we should not be pessimistic. More and more, the modern world

depends on having people who are in the job because they are good enough, not

just because their face fits. There is a story of a faciory owner who sent for

an engineer to see to a machine which would not work. He examined it, then

took out a hammer and tapped it, once. The machine started up immediately.

When he presented his bill, the owner protested, "This can`t be right! $100

just for tapping a machine with
