Unfortunately, I’m leaving town rather unexpectedly, and I may be gone for several days. I see. I can tell Mr. Thomas that you phoned. Thank you. Bye bye. Hello, is Bob there please? Hold on a second please. I’m sorry, he has gone out. Oh, this is Paul. When will he be back? He will be back at about 7:00. Can I leave a message please? Yes, certainly. Please tell him I’ll call him at the office tomorrow afternoon. Alright, I’ll tell him when he comes back. Introduction A lot of people find it difficult to make phone calls in a foreign language C and thats understandable. You cant see the person you are talking to, their voice might be unclear, and you might find it difficult to find the right words。   Multi-word verbs  One thing you can do to improve your telephone skills is to learn some of the multi-word verbs that are commonly used in telephone conversations. Most of them are featured in this module(unit). Hold on means wait C and hang on means wait too. Be careful not to confuse hang on with hang up! Hang up means finish the call by breaking the connection C in other words: put the phone down.    Another phrasal verb with the same meaning as hang up is ring off.  The opposite of hang up / ring off is ring up C if you ring somebody up, you make a phone call.  And if you pick up the phone, (or pick the phone up) you answer a call when the phone rings.   Hang on a second...   If you are talking to a receptionist, secretary or switchboard operator, they may ask you to hang on while they put you through C put through means to connect your call to another telephone. With this verb, the object (you, me, him, her etc.) goes in the middle of the verb: put you through.   But if you cant get through to (contact on the phone) the person you want to talk to, you might be able to leave a message asking them to call you back. Call back means to return a phone call C and if you use an object (you, me, him, her etc.), it goes in the middle of the verb: call you back.   Level of formality  Another thing to think about when talking on the telephone is formality. Its important to use the right level of formality C if you are too formal, people might find it difficult to feel comfortable when they talk to you. On the other hand, if you are too informal, people might think you are rude!   Generally speaking, if you are talking to someone in a business context, you should use could, can, may or would when you make a request: Could I speak to Jason Roberts, please? Can I take a message? Would next Wednesday be okay?. You should also use please and thank you or thanks very much whenever you ask for, or receive, help or information.   Its important to show politeness by using words like would, could, please, thank you etc. But its also okay to use some of the features of informal/spoken English - short forms, phrasal verbs and words like okay and bye - in other words - everyday English! So phrases like Im off to a conference..., no problem, bye! and hang on a moment and Ill put you through are perfectly acceptable, as long as the overall tone of the conversation is polite.   One last tip - its better to ask for help or clarification when youre having a telephone conversation, than to pretend you understand something that you didnt. Its perfectly acceptable to use phrases like Could you repeat that, please? Could you speak a little more slowly, please? and would you mind spelling that for me please? Using phrases like these will help make sure that you have a successful phone call, and may save you from lots of problems later on. You could always say that the lines very bad today if you cant hear very well. And its also a good idea to practise words, phrases and vocabulary before you make the call! blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_5163b6a00100d970.html phone telephone cordless telephone cell phone mobile mobile phone phone box payphone phone card top up card landline phone book the receiver the dial the keypad the key yellow pages receive a phone call The phone rings. to call to call back to phone to make a phone call to pick up the phone to ring to lift the receiver to dial the number to dial a wrong number to hang up hang up the dial to answer to send a text message (to) to text line engaged busy out of order reverse-charge call local call national call international call dialing code number wrong number speed dial enquiries directory enquiries message operator answering machine bridg speaking! One of them was that中,我们已经解释过了,时态错误,应将was改为is; 第3)小题,they can earn money. For the most part,中,没有错误,for the most part为习惯表达,表示“最主要的原因是”,且语法无误; 第4)students working to earn money for their own中,working是非谓语形式,导致该句没有谓语,是一个典型的`不完整句,因此要将working改为work,还原其谓语功能。 第5)小题,use. Earning their own money allow them中,主语为动名词形式的earning,与谓语allow的一致性出现问题,应改为allows; 第6)小题,to spend on anything as if they please.中,从句引导词错误,导致含义混乱,应将as if改为as; 第7)小题,They would have to ask their parents for中,如上文中的解释,改为should not; 第8)小题,money or for permission to do things by中,介词使用有误,这主要还是一个语法问题。将by改为with; 第9)小题,the money. Some students may also to save中,情态动词和不定时的语法问题,应该将to去掉; 第10)小题,up for our college or future use.中,我们解释过了,这里的代词our与全文的叙述角度发生冲突。经判断,将其改为their。

www.tudou.com/playlist/playindex.do?lid=8079599&iid=4528&cid=25 v.youku.com/v_playlist/f4213282o1p7.html The Moral Side of Murder Justice with Michael Sandel This is a course about Justice. We begin with a story. Suppose youre the driver of a trolley car. Your trolley car hurtling down the track at 6 mph. At the end of  the track, you notice five workers are working on the track. You try to stop, but you cant. Your brakes dont work. You feel desperate, because you know if you crash into these five workers, they will all die. But so soon you know thats for sure. So you feel helpless until you notice, there is out to the right, a side track at the end of that track Theres a worker working on the track. Your steering wheel works. So you can tune the trolley car, if you want to, onto the side track, killing the one but sparing the five.  Here is our first question. Whats the right thing to do? What would you do? Lets take a poll. How many would turn the trolley car onto the disde track? Raise your hands. How many wouldnt? How many would go straight ahead.  A handful of people would. A vast majority would turn. Lets hear first. Now we need to begin to investigate the reasons why you think is the right thing to do. Lets begin with those in the majority. Who would turn to go onto the side track? Why would you do it? What would be your reason? Who is willing to volunteer a reason? Because it cant be right to kill five people when you could only kill one person instead. It wouldnt be right to kill five if you could only kill one person instead. Thats a good reason. Who else? Does anybody agree with that reason?  I think its the same reason on the 9/11. We regard the people who flew the plane into Pennsylvania field as heroes. because they choose to kill the people on the plane, and not kill more people in the building. So the principle there is the same as 9/11 the tragic circumstance. Because to kill one so that five can live. Is that the reason most of you have those will turn? Lets hear now from those in the minority, those wouldnt turn. I think thats the same type of mortality that justify genocide and terrorism in order to save one type of race, you wipe out the other .. so what would you do in that case? To avoid the horror of genocide, you would crash into the five and kill them. Presumedly yes. OK. Who else? Thats a brave answer. Thank you. Lets consider another trolley car case and see whether those of you in the majority why would adhere to the principle, better one should die so that five should live. This time youre not the diver of the trolley car, you are an onlooker.Youre standing on a bridge, overlooking a trolley car track. Down the track comes the trolley car. At the end of the track are five workers. The brakes dont work.  The trolley car is about to careen into the five and kill the five them. Now you are not the driver. You really feel helpless until you notice standing next to you leaning over the bridge is a very fat man and you could give him a shove. He would fall over the bridge onto the track. right in the way of the trolley car. He would die but he would spare the five. Now how many would push the fat man over the bridge. Sandel (born March 5, 1953) is an American political philosopher and a professor at Harvard University. He is best known for the Harvard course Justice which is available to view online, and for his critique of Rawls Theory of Justice in his Liberalism and the Limits of Justice (1982). Sandel subscribes to the theory of communitarianism (although he is uncomfortable with the label), and in this vein he is perhaps best known for his critique of John Rawlss A Theory of Justice. Rawls argument depends on the assumption of the veil of ignorance, which allows us to become unencumbered selves. Sandels view is that we are by nature encumbered to an extent that makes it impossible even in the hypothetical to have such a veil. Some examples of such ties are the ties we make with our families, which we do not make by conscious choice but are born with them already attached. Because they are not consciously applied, these ties are impossible to separate from someone. Sandel believes that only a less

Lisa: So, Mum, how are you feeling about the party? Mum: Oh, wonderful, definitely. It was a real success, wasnt it? Everyone seemed to have a good time, and the food was perfect. There were very few left-overs, which Im happy to say. And you two were marvellous. I dont know what I would have done without you. Wang Lin: Iam really enjoying the whole day, the preparations and the party itself. I was a bit upset when I tasted my Jiaozi, though. They were so salty. Mum: I shouldnt worry about that if I were you. I though they were great. Wang Lin: But they really were too salty. They would have tasted much better if I had put less salt in them. Lisa: Perhaps you are right. But I think you are just a bit of perfectionist. All our friends love you. Wang Lin: I am happy to hear that, because I enjoy meeting them all. Mum: There were more people than I expected. I was surprised. Lisa: Yes, almost every one we invited came. I just wish Cathy had been here. I really missed her. Wang Lin: There was a happy atmosphere. I just wish we had taken some photographs. Mum: Yes, I agree. I really couldnt forgive Bob for forgetting to buy a film for the camera. Lisa: Never mind, Mum. Youll have lots of good memories of the party for years to come. Dialogue 1: A: Shall we have a dinner party for Rose tonight? B: All right. Where and when? A: Just at our home tonight. B: That is just what I wanted to suggest. A: Do you think we should invite Peter over for the party? B: No, I dont think his wife would let him join us. A: How about inviting Mary and Barbara? B: That sounds like a good idea. A: How many people should be invited to the party? B: In my opinion, the more, the merrier. But our house is limited. A: Are twelve people all right? B: At most twelve, I think. A: When you send invitation, tell them not to take too many presents. B: Oh, dear! It sounds that you want to remind them of taking many presents with them. Dialogue 2: A: Everything is ready. Please come to the dining room, everybody. B: Wow, what a marvellous table youve got here with all those dishes on! C: Ive long heard Chinese dishes are well-known all over the world for their color, aroma and taste. A: I hope youll like my cooking. B: You cooked them? Special recipes. I think you are not only a good teacher but also a good cook. A: Thanks for the compliment. B: We should stop to eat. I am watering. I cant stand them! A: OK. Lets begin with chicken which will bring luck to the guests, according to Chinese table culture. B: It sounds interesting. Now that Ill eat more. A: Please help yourself to it. Everybody, please. D: Thanks. Really, I like fried kidney best among Chinese food. E: Let me have a try of it. Well, really unusual! The fried kidney is quite tender and delicious! A: Happy party! Everybody, cheers! Dialogue 3: A: Are you the guest to join the garden party? B: Yes, Im from Los Angeles. A: The reception desk is in the best view of Building 2. Let me check your things for you. B: Thank you. Does the party begin at ten oclock, sure? A: Yes, sir. You still have 40 minutes to prepare something else. B: The garden here is beautiful and ancient, isnt it? A: Yes, and it is well kept, too. Do you often go to a garden party? B: Yes, it has a charm of its own. A party in the open gives a greater sense of freedom than one held in the room. A: I wish you a good time. B: Thanks a lot.
