Dear _,
My ultimate career objective is to become a freelance writer using bilingual skills in the broad media industry. Making use of my experience as a copywriter, I want to extend the possibility of my career in the literary profession by acquiring not only English skills but professional knowledge gained from the Media and Communications degree course
My affinity with languages stems originally from my primary school where I received several awards in annual essay-writing competitions
Being encouraged by teachers and parents, I gained great confidence and interest in languages. Reading has always been one of my most enjoyable activities since infancy. In order to broaden my communication and cultural horizons, I majored in German at my junior college. During this time, I also studied English in London. My passion for learning foreign languages developed after this opportunity and following this I enrolled in a French and Spanish class as a part time student at the NANZAN community college
As for my business career, I did not hesitate in choosing to be a copywriter because I felt I could contribute to the advertising industry using my perceptive and articulate nature. I have worked in this field for nine years and have been engaged in a wide range of advertising, such as making print works, planning campaigns and producing TV commercials. These experiences have undoubtedly enhanced not only my creativity but also my flexibility, multilateral thinking and managing ability. Through participating in following the progress of sales promotions, I recognized the importance of having convictions which are created through genuine involvement, a relationship and dialogue
These qualities enlightened my focus on furthering my career. As a matter of fact, clients now demand work that communicates to people across national boundaries. Accordingly, I hope studying will enable me to further develop my knowledge and skills so I can gain wide opportunities as a in future work placement
I have great ambitions, and self-determination to carry me through a challenging university degree. Diligence, enthusiasm and an abundance of energy are my strengths, also paying close attention to detail with the ability to work under pressure if need be. My work experiences so far makes me confident that I could will enjoy a successful university career.
Yours sincerely,

Communication and Culture Studies,Rhetoric and Communication,还有的学校只涉及媒介方面的学习,如电台电视或通信等专业。

Dear _,
“If a nation can be compared to a large vessel at sea, then the journalists are its watch-keepers who timely report the treacherous shoals and hidden dangers to ensure the safe journey of the vessel.” This celebrated and thought-provocative motto by Joseph Pulitzer gives a most vivid and profound elucidation of the crucial role that journalists can play in contemporary social life. Regarding the role of the watch-keeper, I have my own understanding. The career of being a journalist entails “thinking allowed and thinking aloud.” He or she should, first of all, be an active, sensitive participant of social life and demonstrate independent and critical insights. Apart from such qualities as courage, social conscience, objectivity, enthusiasm and discretion, a journalist must have deep concerns for the destiny of his/her nation and the welfare of its people.
I never cherish any blind faith in the accepted theories and teachings but instead have endeavored to cultivate a skeptical attitude toward what I am exposed to. In my notebooks are recorded not only what my teachers have taught me but also my personal contemplations and critical views. On many important issues I have the habit of discussing with the most learned and inspiring teachers from whom to seek enlightenment and to probe into the essence of the matter through “collisions of ideas”. I have also devoted most of my spare time to studying technical literature in the libraries, to keep myself informed of the latest academic developments and to develop my own academic perspectives from a wealth of information. In taking examinations, I seldom confine myself to what is laid down in the textbooks but instead try to present my own understandings, observations and reflections. It is indeed not easy to be one’s true self but the joy of exercising my own academic initiative and exploring my academic possibilities has given me immense satisfaction.
In studying the courses in myself specialty, I have paid close attention to laying a solid academic foundation. I have been particularly fascinated by such courses as Mass Communication, Theories of Journalism, Theories of Broadcasting and Television Journalism, and History of Western Journalism, which have allowed me to gain a deep understanding of the principles of journalism and to examine journalism in a historical context. The world of journalism represents an exciting world of ideas and ideals, a world of variegated phenomena that make up the reality of our social life. Apart from compulsory courses, I took a number of optional courses like The History of Ancient China. This course has been very important to me because, in order to understand how China ’s mass communication evolved in the contemporary period, it is necessary to gain insights into China ’s traditional cultural and historical legacy and how those cultural and historical traditions shape the present and even the future of the country.
“A true scholar must be well-read and well-traveled.” This well-known Chinese saying points to two essential qualities that a successful student and scholar must possess—ample book knowledge and practical experience (the latter resulting from field trips far and wide). I believe this principle holds especially true for practitioners of mass communication because it is more of an applied academic discipline. For half a year just as a freshman, I did internship at _ Television Station—one of China ’s major TV producer—where I performed two types of responsibilities: translating English materials into Chinese and editing news. The first responsibility exposed me to the standard practices of western mass media while the second allowed me to obtain practical work experience.
Later, working as an interning reporter at _ Daily, the largest newspaper in the city, I concentrated on the issue of possible water pollution in the Three-Gorge Region where the world’s largest hydrological project is under way. For a whole month, I traveled to 10 counties and investigated the operation of the 19 water treatment factories in this region. In addition, I interviewed 12 environmentalists and based on detailed facts and statistics I gave an objective and detailed analysis of the possible negative impacts of the project on the local water environment and urged the local authorities to take concrete measures to guard against possible consequences. My serial articles produced widespread sensation and made the protection of water environment the hot subject of the time in the local media. For me, this was a most important experience as a feature story writer because for the first time in my life I made extensive field trips and reported on the issues most closely related to the welfare of the general public. This experience significantly heightened my awareness of the social responsibility of the journalist and of the role that a journalist can play in promoting the social welfare of the people.
My independent thinking, sound academic performance and practical media experience distinguished me from most of my fellow students and came to the attention of Prof. _X, a leading scholar on “cultural communication” in my university. At his invitation, I became a key member of his research team and served as his research assistant. I read a number of leading academic journals including _ and analyzed all the available American news programs recorded on videotapes. Based on my research findings, I wrote a research paper entitled Cross-Cultural Communication Significance of English News for Developing Countries. The paper explores how developing countries (whose native language is not English) can best employ English news programs as an effective tool of communication with the English-speaking audience in the world, with English language as the dominant language of communication in the ongoing globalization context. I also proposed specific steps how those developing countries can promote the communication and the influence of their national cultures in the international community and facilitate their social and economic development. My paper was published in the national-level journal TV STUDY, which indicates the rare achievement of an undergraduate.

Dear _,
The media's writing style today is owed to the 'New Journalists' of the 1960's and 1970's who transformed the approach towards Journalism. I am making this application as I am fascinated by the vast scope which is covered by the subject and how in today's society the media plays a major role in every subject imaginable and affects everybody's life in some way. After completing this course I hope to enter into Print or Broadcast Journalism and eventually I would like to have the prospect of working in both of these forms of media. I have a particular interest in magazines and Foreign Affairs and I am inspired by the work of John Simpson, who has maintained his position of World Affairs Editor at BBC News for over twenty years.
For my A-levels I chose to study English Literature, Theatre Studies and French, because these courses have allowed me to develop both my written skills and structuring the writing style that is so varied for each subject. In English Literature we studied the era in which 'New Journalism' was introducing itself into society by such Journalists as Tom Wolfe and Gay Talese. Their 'unconventional' works were published in magazines rather than newspapers, due to the response from the editors who favoured the more 'traditional' journalists of the time. Theatre Studies has required me to devise and interpret plays which has enhanced my confidence, improvisation and time management skills, as well as building on theory and historical context. When studying French we take a view on current affairs from around the world today. We learn how to debate and compose various pieces of written work documenting both our own opinions and taking a neutral view. French A-level has also strengthened my skills to successfully learn a language with its grammar, vocabulary and culture.
I have recently been on a five day work placement with my local paper. It was a great experience where I gained the insight into the daily life of a journalist and I was able to write articles which required piecing together through photojournalism and interviews in order to produce the finished article. It also provided me with the practice to prepare me for both University and my future career. I have written articles for my school newspaper and hope to write more in the future. Throughout my life I have developed a particular interest in acting and the surrounding effects upon society that it creates. In , I received a part as an extra in a period film directed by Julian Fellowes, recently previewed at The London Film Festival. I found it to be a good example of the amount of work put into successful media which is unknown by the public. It also showed me how intense the competition is within the film and media industries.
I am an Assistant Leader at Dorchester Youth Theatre and I have the privilege of working with teenagers only a few years younger than myself who share my passion for performance and have had responsibilities, such as co-directing various productions, whilst undertaking the role of Stage Manager.
These responsibilities are reflected in my work life as I have worked in a camping shop for 18 months; my time at the shop has allowed me to develop both my social and interpersonal skills alongside my organisation skills. These skills have been beneficial when taking part in expeditions as part of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.
I am taking a gap year commencing August , in which I will go and work as an Au Pair for a family living in Italy; I will look after the child as required and teach him English. I am sure that this will help me to learn a new language and experience its culture, whilst experiencing independent life submerged in foreign culture.
I look forward to my University life and my future within Journalism and where it will take me. I believe that I am well suited to the demands of a Journalism degree because I have a genuine interest and the motivation to work hard and succeed.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila

Dear _,
I am hoping to read for a communications, media and culture degree. I find it remarkable, inspiring and a little bit frightening how the media exercise control over our lives, whilst offering rich cultural rewards. I am fascinated by the action and effects of human communications of all kinds and am keen to extend the insight I have gained so far.
My interest in the subject began through my GCSE Media Studies and my knowledge of the subject area has expanded at A-level where I am acquiring analytical skills, helping me unpack and contextualise a wider variety of media forms. My other A-levels are English Language, Sociology, Critical Thinking and Philosophy &Ethics, and these are giving me a broad overview of life and human communications and culture. An example of how these subjects support each other would be studying the marxist concept of hegemony and applying it to religion, media ownership, the high culture/low culture debate in sociology and even the bourgeois emphasis on Standard English.
I've slowly been gaining practical experience alongside my academic learning. Two years ago, I was lucky enough to get work experience with a television crew on location as a runner. I learnt the value of working as a member of the team in a stressful environment and I gained an understanding of the processes of TV production. I have also been involved in several other media projects, some as coursework and others undertaken independently.Coursework projects have included a magazine for young male teenagers; designing a product and advertising campaign; and producing, directing and presenting a documentary for sixth formers and their parents on the EMA system. As extra-curricular activities, I designed a poster and Internet campaign for one of the school plays and in the absence of any existing school publication, I launched a bimonthly newsletter, aimed at Angley's students. These projects have provided great learning experiences, enabling me to develop print software skills in a creative way.
Other school activities have included, the lead male role in 'South Pacific' and significant roles in 'Oliver' and 'West Side Story' as well as assisting the Performing Arts A-level group perform their comedy show. By playing roles on stage, my confidence has increased and I have learnt to appreciate and learn from the talents of others. I am also a school prefect, which I find satisfying and a great privilege.
In my leisure time I enjoy making films - mostly parodies of various genres. I then edit the films using a programme called Magix Movie Edit Pro. I have also edited on Final Cut Express, which has made an interesting comparison. My next project is to learn Final Cut Pro, and to develop a more effects-driven style. I also like to read, for example, I was inspired by Naomi Klein's book No Logo on the effects of globalization, the commoditisation of our culture and public spaces and how powerful brands have become. I am currently reading Graeme Burton's Media & Society to gain some additional perspective on my A2 media and to prepare myself for my degree.
So far I have enjoyed myself in my studies and hopefully have developed some of the skills and qualities for success in degree-level communications, media and culture studies.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila

Dear _,
It’s all about the headline. It’s about getting your point across in the most direct way you can. These personal statements are very good example of this, in just a few lines I have to get my message of why I want do a degree in Journalism across to my prospective universities. That is one of the reasons why I love to write, the challenge of putting over a complex thought or concept to a large audience of people and convey it in such a way everybody will understand it. As the great writer Hemingway once said, “My aim is to put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way.”
My own personal experience of journalism started young, my dad used to write for a magazine and take me with him when he went to interview people, since then I have been fascinated with the industry. When I was 14 I was lucky enough to get a work experience placement at “News International” in Wapping. I got to work on the websites of “FiredUp.com”, “Revolver.com” and “Page3.com” as well as have a tour of the offices of “The Sun”, “News Of The World” and “The Times”, I have also recently been offered a day’s work experience at my local paper and I am currently waiting for news of work experience at the BBC.
I pride myself on being well organised and thorough in my research. I have also developed many skills such as interview techniques and being able to see things from another perspective, a skill I have acquired through Sociology and Communication Studies, analytical skills through Film Studies and Media Studies and I have learnt about analysing and collating numerical data and factual evidence in Psychology. Although I have already completed three A-Levels and two AS Levels, I have taken a year out to study AS French, Sociology and Spanish. I did this in order to improve my grades and to give me a wider choice of qualifications as my previous subjects are all very similar with their syllabus as well the fact multiple languages would be an invaluable advantage to have when working in the area of communication.
Some of my outside interests are music, politics, the Internet and reading. Music in particular is a great love of mine, I regularly attend “gigs” and concerts and have been an active member of the “Sum 41 Street Team” for over a year, this involves spreading publicity through flyers and posters to promote the band, I find it very fulfilling and enjoyable. Another one of my interests is the Internet, I contribute articles to a site dealing with issues such as “top-up fees” and other important student matters, which I enjoy greatly and is helping to improve my knowledge of university for the future. I have a part time job waitressing at a local hotel which I do a few nights a week. It gives me a sense of my own independence and responsibility, I also help my mother at the local Red Cross during half terms and holidays cooking for the elderly and have also recently volunteered to sell Poppies for Remembrance Sunday throughout my town. Another activity of mine is being my tutor group representative for our college’s student council and regularly attend meetings to deal with concerns of the student body.
I am thoughtful, organised and handle pressure well, I love to write and it is my ambition to do so, I believe I can bring many things to the courses I have selected and in turn can get a lot out of them as well.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila

Dear _,
“If a nation can be compared to a large vessel at sea, then the journalists are its watch-keepers who timely report the treacherous shoals and hidden dangers to ensure the safe journey of the vessel.” This celebrated and thought-provocative motto by Joseph Pulitzer gives a most vivid and profound elucidation of the crucial role that journalists can play in contemporary social life.
The publication of my research paper also testifies to my research potential. The vice chairman of my department offered to be my advisor of my graduation thesis. Under his guidance, I am researching on media culture and constructing analytical models. So far, I have completed the research on American mainstream media culture and its pluralistic value system. My advisor has expressed considerable appreciation of my research work so far.
_ University where I am studying is a key national university that attracts best students from every part of the country. In fierce academic competitions, I have managed to remain top-third in academic performance and win scholarships throughout the years. I received the honor of Outstanding Student of _ University and on account of my distinguished English proficiency I won the third prize for my university in the nationwide English Contest of University Students in . In my extracurricular activities, I organized and participated in several major events for such student organizations as “Galaxy” Literary Society, “What’s New” Student Newspaper, and “Be Creative” Association. As a result, my writing skills and journalistic competence have been markedly improved.
Building on my educational background, my research experience and my research interest, I would like to pursue a Master’s program in Mass Communication. The courses that I plan to study include international mass communication, mass media and culture, theories of mass communication, methods of mass communication research, history of mass communication, economic and political aspects of mass media. I wish to obtain comprehensive and advanced education in mass communication and seek opportunities to participate in workshops, seminars and projects. If possible, I will continue my study toward a Ph.D. degree. I believe that academically and experientially I am qualified for your well-respected program. Therefore I wish that you would seriously and favorably consider my application.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila

Dear xx,
“Women aren’t suited for such hard subjects.” my friend Seung-woo told mewith a smug smile. Seung-woo didn’t think that mathematics was a field forwomen. Although he was my age and wasn’t tied down by most traditional beliefs,he believed that only men could be true mathematicians. The majority of peoplein my country, South Korea, believe the gender stereotype that women areinherently inferior to men in mathematics. I strongly disagree with thisoutdated notion. Women are just as capable of outstanding mathematicalachievement as men, and I am determined to help disprove gender stereotypesthrough my example.
Mathematics has always given me a deep sense of satisfaction. Even inelementary school, I was attracted to the precision and logic inherent inmathematical formulas. I devoured as much mathematical information as I could, collecting theorems of mathematicians such as Gauss and Euclid like otherstudents collected stamps. I had the opportunity to test my skills and knowledgein high school, when I competed in several national math competitions, includingthe Korea Mathematical Olympiad. My strong showing in these venues, along withmy top math grades and perfect math score on the Korean SAT, bolstered myconfidence in my abilities. I was proud to prove to others that I was capable ofperforming at the highest levels.
Despite my strong interest and achievement in mathematics, it has beendifficult for me to realize my potential due to the Korean educational system, which emphasizes cramming for tests instead of critical understanding. Moresignificantly, Korean social biases against women in the fields of math andscience have discouraged me from pursuing my love of mathematics. Thus, I wantto study in the United States, where I will be able follow my dream withoutthese constraints. For about a year, I have taken English language courses at auniversity in Washington, D.C., where I have gained a glimpse of Americanacademic life from the inside. I am very impressed by American students’devotion to their studies and the system’s ability to support each student’sgoals. I am therefore especially interested in attending Boston College, which,in addition to offering outstanding math and science courses, is renowned forits emphasis on cultivating students’ full development, or “cura personalis.” AtBoston College, I will be able to focus on my goal of becoming an excellentmathematician.
I am determined to succeed, but I know that I must overcome manychallenges. Sometimes, when I feel discouraged by the obstacles I face as aKorean woman in mathematics, I imagine what my life will be like ten years fromnow. Armed with a Boston College degree, I will visit my old friend Seung-woo.We will have corresponded over the years, so he’ll already know about the manymathematics articles published in my name, and he will be well aware of theinternational acclaim they received. I will savor the day when Seung-woo admitsthat I was correct in believing that I could succeed as a mathematician. I willbe proud to know that partly due to my achievements, the door to increasedopportunities for women in math and science has swung open a little bitwider.
Yours sincerely.

Dear ___:
Marketing experts like to classify people into different generation groups, believing that people of the same age share similar value and attitudes. I agreewith those experts'' theory in that it emphasizes the connection between thecircumstances of one's upbringing and one's later outlook on life. Mypersonality, talents, values, even career choice have been profoundly influencedby my family life and upbringing in Taiwan.
My name is Peter Huang and I’ve grown up in Ten-Mou, a multiculturalneighborhood in suburban Taipei. During the early years of my childhood, myparents exerted a profound influence over my development. Though neither of themwas involved in business, by watching their integrity and hard work, I learnedmore about the true meaning of success than I would ever have in anyclassroom.
My father is an Air Force colonel. He joined the R.O.C Air Force at the ageof 14, struggling to achieve his personal best as the supply division chief ofthe R.O.C. Air Force Academy. Unlike some officers in the military, who dependedon family relationship and privilege to get promoted, my father gained hisposition by hard work and assiduity. He thus emphasized the importance ofindustriousness when it came to my education. When I was 10, I attended a speechcontest. During the week before the contest, my father and I spent two hours aday together, organizing the lecture content, adjust my rhythm, and rehearsing.I was a shy, soft-spoken child, and found speaking in public difficult at first. But through my father's patient efforts and his believe in the rewards of hardwork, I gradually became an excellent public speaker and won many of thecontests that followed. As a result of the experiences such as this, I learned avery strong work ethic and emulated some of my father's best characteristics -perseverance and dedication.
These qualities served me well as I entered mandatory military service inTaiwan and faced many difficult situations. I once led a squad to enact thetyphoon disaster relief action in Nan-tou. We had one week in which to salvage afactory that was half-buried in mud. As the squad commander, I not onlysupervised, but also participated in the demanding and seemly endless diggingwork. And each night, after an exhausting work when all other soldiers wereasleep, I spent extra hours checking if there were sufficient supplies andmaking plans for the next day's relief action. When I finally laid down tosleep, I could not help but reflect on how much I had developed, as both aperson and a leader, since that first speech contest.
My mother has a warm and kind personality, and has always reached out tothe expatriates in our neighborhood. She organized a language exchange club withthe American students in local colleges, hoping to increase understanding ofTaiwanese and American cultures through the exchange of language. I took part inthe club when I was still in elementary school. This childhood multi-culturalexperience instilled in me an active personality and willingness to interactwith people of different cultures. In particularly, it strengthened my interestin American and my desire to work and live there one day.
My mother’s emphasis on international exchange and cooperation has led meto work for the Fulbright Foundation in Taipei as a research assistant. Thisposition allows me to interact with educational associations in the UnitedStates and to take part in international conferences. I once participated in aventure capital seminar in Hsin-Chu, working on the issue of graduate leveltechnology management education with representatives of major high-techcompanies and academic institutions. Last November, I represented the Foundationin an international Tele-conference in Taipei. The conference was conducted bothin English and in Chinese and was hosted by the Prime of Ministry of Education. My work has also given me the opportunity to know and become friends withexceptional Fulbright scholars from the United States.
While my childhood years shaped my character, it was my high school andcollege years which led to my interest in business. 1988 was both a determiningyear to my career choices and a turning point in Taiwan's economy. As peoplefamiliar with Taiwan's modern economic history know, the exchange rate of theNew Taiwan Dollar to U.S. Dollars moved from 40:1 to 25:1 in that year under theoverwhelming pressure of American government. Thus meant that the traditionaladvantage of Taiwan's economy, low labor costs, was no longer our strength.People everywhere were talking about the future of Taiwan's economy. Out of ayoung man's passion, I wanted to contribute my talent and effort to my country. That was the time at which I made up my mind that someday, I will makeTaiwan-made products famous world-widely, like those produced by IBM, Intel, orMicrosoft.
This teenage naive patriotic dream transformed into an interest in businessadministration and economics after I graduated from Taipei First Senior HighSchool. I focused my college study on manufacturing administration andeconomics. From four years of lectures, seminars, and in-factory study in thedepartment of Industrial Engineering at National Formosa University, I acquiredskills in quality insurance, manufacturing planning and control, and factoryimprovement and diagnostic methods. In my economic class, I learned how prices, preferences, and incomes affect people's demand of goods from the microeconomic.I also acquired knowledge of how various factors - government policies, currencyexchange rate, and balance of international trade - affect a country's economicsgrowth. My interest in business, however, is not limited to industrialengineering and economics. In my junior year, I also took 6 credits ofaccounting courses and learned the knowledge of basic accounting principles, financial statements, and managerial accounting. To acquire a more thoroughunderstand of management information systems, I chose “Alumni AssociationDatabase Management System for Department of Industrial Engineering” as mygraduate activity project. From each step of developing the database system, Ilearned solid skills in FoxPro programming and enterprise demand analysis.
I am thankful that my parents provided me with an environment thatencouraged me to develop my personality and an intellect for which I amremembered. With a deeply-instilled work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, anda high level of motivation, I believe I will enrich the professional and socialenvironment at your esteemed Buchman School and continue to grow as a expert inhigh-tech industry.
Yours sincerely,
