New findings in scientific areas can examine and challenge previous assumptions. A recent finding concerning the meerkat, a burrow-dwelling animal in the African grasslands, has cast doubt upon the conventional ideas of altruism, the type of behavior in which an animal sacrifices its own interests for the benefit of another.

Meerkats were previously thought to be a typical altruistic animal. When the other meerkats feed, there is usually one meerkat watching out for predators. The sentinel meerkat gains nothing, it seems, for it can neither eat nor escape quickly and successfully after raising an alarm.

However, in the new findings, it's shown that the sentinel meerkat has already eaten food before standing guard, thus contradicting the thought that it has an empty belly while on the lookout. In addition to this, the sentinel is the first to see a predator, so it is the first to escape. It is also placed nearest a burrow, making it relatively easier to flee. Moreover, its alarm calls may cause the group either to gather or to spread rapidly, which may attract the predator's attention, providing the sentinel a better chance to escape.

The same is with supposed human altruistic behavior. Organ donation to strangers may be considered an unselfish act, which provides little reward to the donator. However, by donating his organ, the donator may most probably receive praise and appreciation from others. Isn't this non-material reward, which increases one's self worth, satisfactory to anyone?

Parents are the first people a child learns to respect, because they are his guardians, his elders tied by blood. Being a good parent doesn't necessarily mean that he or she must be knowledgable, or must be able to speak big, wise words that may be difficult to understand. If a parent can teach the child how to behave by behaving himself, he is a good parent even if he is illiterate, or is poor. Thus, a child's character is usually shaped and molded before he attends school under the influence of his parents, and that is more than a good teacher can do to the child with the bearings of knowledge.

我在初三的暑假之前英语都是非常一般的，只能说跟校内课程的英语水平相近。初三暑假，我决定出国，开始备考TOFEL。于是我干了三件事：

○ 第一件：背单词。把红宝书背了一遍(后来觉得字母顺序背起来太痛苦就又买了本绿宝书)，大大提升了我的单词量。大家可以使用背单词的APP，这些应用的厉害之处在于将背单词融入游戏，即帮助你巩固学习单词，又不枯燥。

○ 第二件：阅读。建议每天阅读英文新闻，不会就查字典。要求自己阅读的速度，慢慢加快。

○ 第三件：多听。推荐听sss科学美国人。语速较快，前期磨耳朵，后期练精听都是不错的选择。可以一句一句的听，把听到的写下来再和原文去对，看看自己听出来多少，一天一篇，重在积累。

不过，这并不够。

○ reading

其实阅读最重要的就是理解，每天的单词打卡是必不可少的，此外还要在平时多阅读，见多了复杂句，考试的时候就不会犯怵。刷题也是必不可少的，对于四个部分都是一样。

○ listening

听力的话上文提到的sss就是一个不错的听力材料。针对考试的话我的经验是对话一点笔记都不要记!对话很短，记笔记的话会得不偿失。Lecture的话可以用结构听力法，要听出来speaker的语气，停顿等等，将来都是考点。

○ speaking

口语的话要多说多录，别不好意思。平时也要多积累语料。前两个task多刷题，后几个要好好运用老师的套路。

○ writing

高分的技巧就是综合写作争good，这就要求你的听力功底了，和听力的训练方法一样。独立写作的话争取打完，多打就好，平时要多用键盘练练。可以多看看题，列一列解题思路。

托福想拿高分三周如何备考?

我报的是新东方托福强化班，我觉得对于像我这样没有接触过托福的学生来说，这个班还是很有用的，经过几个星期的学习，就会对考试的内容有了一个整体上的了解。在课堂上，各个科目的老师会先对托福考试有一个大致的介绍，包括考试的要求、热点和着重准备的方向，然后教给我们一些经验总结出来的简单又高效的方法，比如各类不同的题型和答题方法。经过老师对题目的分类和分析之后，心里就会清晰很多，有了明确的方向和方法，也就不会那么慌乱了。而且老师不仅仅会教给大家各类题型和方法，更重要的是会告诉大家科学的备考方法，从距离考试还有一段时间到最后的冲刺阶段，都会详细地告诉我们最科学有效的学习方法，我觉得这也是很重要的，有了这样的经验，我们就能够少走很多弯路，在最短的时间里获得最大的进步。

我花了三周的时间准备考试，感觉还是有一点匆忙的。首先我觉得词汇量是非常重要的，因为之前没有很系统地认真背过单词，就找了一本精华的单词书在三周的时间内过了两三遍，在考试之前基本上都能记住了，不论是不是要考试了，坚持背单词都是一个很好很有用的习惯。

对于阅读和听力的准备方法就是做TPO，差不多两天做一套。一方面是不断地练习，另一方面也会对考试有一个良好的感觉，然后把过程中出现的单词都背下来，对于做错的题目，想一想为什么做错了以及怎么避免。对于作文，我先翻了一下之前的题目，加上老师总结的内容，总结出来几个容易考的内容，比如工作、教育、社会、科技、社交等等，针对每个话题，自己整理一些好的句子和事例，然后再做TPO来练习速度。到了最后的几天，会完整地做一整套TPO走一遍流程，然后多翻一翻自己之前复习总结的内容。对于口语，我个人觉得第一、二题比较难，经常在很短的时间内想不到什么可以说的，表达方式也很naive，我也是先按照准备作文的方法准备了一些常出现的话题，然后对着题目来练习。

三周紧张的备考过程有了合适的方法也能有所成效，希望王一雪同学的速成法对还在奋战的你有所帮助。

大家好，我叫杨荟茜。我是浙江大学光华法学院涉外人才实验班的学生。今年4月-6月两个月的时间，我参加了新东方杭州学校托福强化班的培训。8月21日我参加了托福考试，取得了112分。我觉得在新东方杭州学校2个月的培训中，不光英语水平得到了很大的提高，应试技巧也获得了提升。

新东方的知名度和口碑都很不错，而且有很多个校区，可以让我们就近选择，提高了上课的便利性。同人广场校区离我们学校非常近，所以当时选择了这里。事实上这里的老师们对我也非常的有帮助。他们不单单上课幽默风趣，讲得非常吸引人，下课了也不吝于和我们分享他们整理的独家资料。

我觉得新东方对我最大的帮助就是“拯救了我的单词”，以前我和很多同学一样，不乐意背单词。到了新东方之后由于助教非常!非常!非常!负责任，会经常督促大家背单词，并且组织词测，所以在新东方学习的2个月时间，我的单词量可以说是突飞猛进，单词量的提高对考试成绩有决定性的影响。

另外就是学会了非常多的应试技巧，其实技巧很重要，并不是说你的英语基础好就可以忽略它。以前我有很多很坏的应试习惯，比方说阅读喜欢先看完整篇文章再去看题目，这样在考试中其实非常浪费时间。参加了强化班之后，纠正了我很多不好的习惯。

对其他“托友”的建议

写作想拿高分，要从套路中超脱出来

首先托福的官方指南中有许多需要解读的东西，不是光凭英语能力就能应付得了的。可以寻求有经验的机构帮忙指导，提供专业的意见。这样能让我们少走很多弯路，事半功倍，非常值得。

其次，虽然托福充满了很多“套路”，但在很多题目中想拿到高分，还是需要从套路中超脱出来，比如写作部分，特别是独立写作。我在写作中拿到了29分，其中我认为最重要的是问到了一题我有切身体会的题目，我就写了很多自己亲身经历和感悟，我相信这才是打动改卷老师给我更多分数的原因。所以如果在相同的英语水平下，而你可以展现出水平之外打动人的东西，这样可以帮助你获得更高的分数。

TOEFL强化班

基于互联网的托福考试也称“新托福”，将于今年9月至10月在美国、加拿大、法国、德国和意大利陆续实施。，基于互联网的托福考试将在中国和其他国家、地区推出, 具体实施时间将于今年11月最终确定。

据介绍，考生将可以通过登录新托福在线练习网（www.ets.org/toeflpractice）浏览新托福模拟考试。此外，新托福在线练习网站的注册用户可以查阅口语部分的样题和答案、听力部分和阅读部分的练习题，进入讨论区，与托福学习者交流每日学习心得。

一.备考材料介绍

口语的素材主要用了四个：OG、巴朗、DELTA、机经。下面我们来详细说说。

备考首先要看的是OG。OG相当于托福入门必备，也是整个托福的指路明灯，所以OG是一定要看的，它能告诉我们考试的重点、范围和ETS的评分标准。OG一直在更新，变化的内容不是很多，但还是建议看最新版的OG。

巴郎和DALTA选择一个即可。本人建议选择巴朗。因为对比后发现还是巴朗更贴近考试。不过就口语来说，两者参考价值不相上下，建议选择巴朗是因为它的听力比DELTA好一些。DELTA听力部分语速过慢，和真实考试有一定差距。

最后来说机经，机经是考前冲刺时候看的，对口语的帮助尤其大，建议大家在考前有选择地看机经。

二.有针对性备考

口语的一、二题准备模板还是很有用的。答题时候要举例论证，这时可以用自己事先准备好的例子套用。考前准备例子的时候一定要多背一些通用性的例子，一个例子好几个话题都能用。口语3-6题要考察听力和阅读，这几道题用模板例子作用已经不大了，主要还是靠基本功。平时好好练习听力和阅读对这几道题的帮助很大，考试时候一定要记下听力内容中的要点，尽量一点都不要落下。综合口语的机经没有独立口语那么有用，不过考前可以作为参考看一下，构思一下答题套路。

三. 语音是否会影响成绩

个人感觉语音对成绩的影响很小，主要还是看表达的流利度和语句表达是否正确。不过，如果发音非常标准的话肯定会增加考官的好感，如果你的备考时间充足的话，不妨练一练语音。具体的练习方法就不做过多赘述了，挑一个自己喜欢的美剧角色，不断模仿他的发音。不要挑那些大反派发音非常怪异的角色去模仿。

另外，考试的时候注意要适当放慢语速，但不要太快。一是因为语速缓慢会让人听起来非常舒服，二是因为你的口音可能会影响考官的理解，如果语速过快可能会导致考官听不清楚你的讲话内容。

托福口语考高分并没有想象中的那么难，只要认真备考，你也可以的!考试时候心态放平，不要紧张，把口语考试当成是普通交流。最后，预祝大家口语都能取得高分。

我们知道，英语中具有句子(clause)之间连接功能的词按照我们中国英语学习者的习惯分为三类：

1. 表示并列或平行关系的连接词。这类只有三个词：

表示共存关系的 “and”，实际上”and”前后的逻辑关系很复杂;

表示矛盾或取舍关系的 “but”，但当连接两个句子时，“but”的作用更倾向于作关联词;

表示选择关系的“or”，但在连接句子的时候，“or “更多的是作关联词，表示一种假设关系：“否则的话”。

2.表示偏正关系，构成主句与副词性从句——即状语从句——之间关系的关联词。这类词相对较多，有几十个。如： ”when“、“because”、“if”等。

3.表示偏正关系，构成主句与名词性或形容词性从句——包括主语从句、宾语从句或表语从句、同位语从句、定语从句——之间关系的关系代词。这类词比连

接词多，但比关联词要少。如：“that “、“who”、“which”等。

为了表述上方便，我们口诀中的“连词”实际上指的是“关联词”和“关系代词”，因为这两类词的变化相对要复杂一些，而且常是托福考试的“出题点”或“题眼”所在。至于三个连接词，“and”连接的句子无论有多少个，只须考虑中间的一个;“but ”和“or“在连接句子时，按“关联词”处理即可。

除了上面的这些“正常”情况外，还有一些特殊情况，而上面的这个“口诀”在一定程度上反映了托福结构(语法)题中“连词”的几种特殊变化规律。而且，这样特殊情况是考试的一个非常重要的“出题点”。

一.省略

解这一道题时，就涉及到连词的省略问题。常规解题方法是：首先，根据“一个逗号看对面”的口诀，我们知道逗号后是主句，进而知道逗号之前要么是从句，要么是短语。所以第一个被排除掉的是“D”项——因为 ”that“所能引导的必须是名词性或形容词性从句(只有”so that“、“so/such…that”和“in that”例外;本来还应包括“now that’’，但迄今为止这一结构在托福语法考题中还没有作为“题眼”出现过)，在这里不可能。继而被排除的是“C”项，因为”native“在这儿只能是形容词——这里”native“绝不可能是名词，具体原因后面“口诀七”将要讨论。随后要剔除的是“B”项，因为”if it were“显然是虚拟语气，而主句是直陈语气。但“A”项可以吗?选项中既没有主语又没有谓语动词。回答是肯定的，因为”Although”所引导的从句属可“省略”的范围，而且这里又符合“省略”的条件。

究竟什么是“省略”呢?我们这里的“省略”指的一些状语从句在一定的条件下可以省略句中的某些成分。那么，都有哪一些从句可以“省略”?省略的“条件”是什么?可以省略哪些“句子成分”呢?

首先，由下列几个关联词引导的从句在托福语法考题中属于可以省略的范围： “as”“if”、“unless”(条件)，“when”、“while“(时间)，“though(although)”(转折)，“even if(though)”(让步)，“once”(假设)。

省略的条件有： —

1.主句的主语与从句的主语逻辑上相一致;

2.从句是以 “be”的适当形式作谓语的“主---系---表”结构或“类主---系----表”结构.后者指的是进行体(时)“be V-ing”或被动语态“be V-ed”.

被省略的部分包括:主语, “be”的人称,时态形式及其前面的情态动词,助动词等.上面例句中实际上相当于省略了“it(the daisy) is”.

二.双重

本题在“去掉独立成分”后只剩了—is the gallantry “。很显然缺少了主语.但四个选项几乎都有一个代词加一个谓语动词。这就意味着作为正确答案的那个选项中的代词必须一词二用——一个词充当两个成分;这样再加上”touching”(这里“touching”不是作后置定语，所以不“独立’’)和“the gallantry“分别充当两个“is’’的主语和表语。最终答案是”D“.为什么呢?因为四个选项中只有”what“具有“双重”的功能.

形容词

形容词修饰名词或代词，说明事物或人的性质或特征。通常，可将形容词分成性质形容词和叙述形容词两类，其位置不一定都放在名词前面。形容词是修饰回答像“what kind of”或“which?”或“whose?”这类的问题。不要混淆形容词和副词，副词通常是以—ly结尾的，而极少形容词以—ly结尾。

1)以—ly结尾的形容词:friendly，deadly，lovely，lonely，likely，lively，ugly，brotherly.

2)以-ly 结尾既为形容词，也为副词:daily，weekly，monthly，yearly，early.

副词

副词通常修饰动词，形容词，副词或其他结构。(它也可以修饰另一个副词或一个形容词，但是这种情况征托福考试里是比较少见的。)副词经常回答“how?”

1、正确的位置：

1) 在动词之前;在be动词、助动词之后。

2) 有多个助动词时，副词一般放在第一个助动词后。

3) 方式副词well，badly，hard等只放在句尾。He speaks English well.

2、其他注意：

1) 副词very 可修饰形容词，但不能修饰动词。

(错) I very like English.

(对) I like English very much.

2) 副词enough要放在形容词的后面，形容词enough放在名词前后都可。

比较

当比较两个事物时，用-er形式(bigger)或者用修饰词less和more。当比较多于两个以上的事物时，用-est形式(biggest)或者做most(most amazing)和least这样的词。

措辞错误

措辞错误讲的是常常被用错的词、这些词包括its/it's，affect/effect，lie/lay等其它词。措辞错误尤其会令读者困饶。如果你在作文里犯了—个这样的错误，评分员会马上注意到。如果你不能确定如问用这些的词的话,就不用它们。可是如果你知道如何用它们，那我就鼓励你放心地用——托福考试的作文评分员将会对你有深刻的印象。

双重否定

在很多语言里.双重否定是正确的(如汉语)。而在英语里，双重否定是错误的。留意像“not none”，“hardly none”和“not never”这样的双重否定;

不完整句子

一个不完整的句子是不能够单独使用的。在托福考试里.改正这种错误的

最佳办法就是要去掉从句的连接词，例如“While I wasmming and relaxing yesterday”是一个不完整的句子，去掉while后，句子就变得完整了：“I wasmming and relaxing yesterday”.其它从句连接词还有although，because，despite。

并列结构

并列在一起的一系列的词或词组必须使用同样的形式。例如，你不能说：

“I was smiling，laughingand flirted.”而应该说：“I was smiling，laughingand flirting.”这种结构里的一系列的词或词组可以是名涧、动词、形容词或者副词。

介词和介词短语

记忆并学会识别像of,by,to,with,from这些常用介问。某些介词总是能够和某些词共同构成词组。例如，可以说：you have a percentage of something，而不能说：a percentage with something.介词引导介词短语,(像of the mountains或down the street)。必须要会辨认介词短语,这样你可以在辨别主谓是否一致时不受介词短语的干扰。还有，介词后面经常跟着以ng结尾的词(这些词叫做动名词——gerunds)，例如：He won by running faster. 代词指代代词是代替名词的词，I，you,she,he.it，we和they这样的代词作主语。(它们经常做一个动作。)me，you，him，her,it,us和them这样的代词作宾语。(它们经常接受一个动作。)物主代词说明所有关系，这些代词包括my(mine)，your(yours)，his,hers,its,our(ours)和their(s)。代替单数名词的代词必须是一个单数形式的代词;代替复数名词的代词必须是一个复数形式的代词. 主谓一致主谓一致是托福考试最经常考的语法内容之一。要认清句子里的主语和谓语。复数主语后面一定要跟复数谓语;单数主语后面要跟单数谓语。介词短语不影响主谓一致(一些特殊情况除外)。注意：像each和every这样的“特殊词”，它们表明主语和谓语是单数;而像few，both，several和many 这样的“特殊词”则表明主语和谓语是复数。

大家都知道，我们中国人其实在英语的听说读写四个环节上最薄弱的就是输出的两个能力：说和写；而最强的就是输入的两个能力：读和听。

下面我就分别以新TOFEL的.综合部分和GRE/GMAT作文的“阿狗”部分为例分别给大家分享一下我个人对于满分的一些理解。

TOEFL iBT

其实新托福加了综合部分以后，我个人认为是降低了难度。因为原来老托福的作文作为新托福作文的独立部分并没有什么太大的改变，而且大家都知道作文水平的提高不是一朝一夕的事情，那么我刚才说的不能盲目就是指大家不能在这个需要体现真正写作水平的部分去背段落，因为这个是会被认为是舞弊行为的。那么在综合、独立各占15分的时候，我们如果能把握住任何一个部分的高分实际上平均下来的分数就不会低。而综合部分由于是先读一篇文章，再听一段录音，然后让我们谈文章与录音的相互关系，而不用发表自己的观点这一题目本身的客观要求就决定了它是可以背由固定标准语句组成的“魔板”的。这正如研究生入学考试英语写作的小作文和雅思写作的小作文一样是有固定套路的。比如录音讲座要么就是质疑或者反驳了阅读段落；要么就是支持或者加强了阅读段落，所以只需要把相关描述质疑或者反驳与描述支持或者加强的固定语句背下来就可以得到一个相对较高的分数，如果考生同时又把相关要点表达准确和清楚了的话，那么满分是完全可能的。当综合部分有15分在手的时候，独立部分只要及格那么就能至少获得24分的作文高分！

Who are the best teachers in our life? In my opinion, the first teachers we have in our lives in most cases are our parents. They teach us to walk, to speak, and to have good manners before we reach “the real world. ” More than even the professional teachers that we have in school, parents are generally the most involved in the development and education of children.

The main reason for my view is that our parents are the best teachers at the beginning of our lives, which actually corresponds to the parents' role in nature. So in such matters, parents should be much more flexible and be rather the partners with their children. So we can see that being a teacher of growing child become more and more complicated case as the time passes and many parents are simply not able to meet the increased demands.

On the other hand, I would say that parents are not professional teachers and they tend to be very biased by their love of their children. So wishing good things and an easy life may prevent children from maturation. In any case, parents usually can present only one viewpoint of the world, while good teaching should be based on different attitudes. Thus, when children go to school and have a great diversity of teachers, they learn much more than their parents could probably give them. Furthermore, once our parents get older, they become more conservative and cannot always be objective in regard to modern trends and fashions. Thus we need to take their advice with caution during that period. However, some kind of intuition which I believe shared between relatives about what everybody needs and great love which exists in a families still makes our parents very good teachers and advisers at any time.

In short, while parents are not the ideal teachers, and well-rounded children will generally need a

great diversity of teachers in their lives in order to have a more accurate view of the world,

parents are generally the most committed of all teachers and have the greatest emotional investment in their children and their future.

They're easy to prepare, so many of us eat more of those nutritious items daily. A hundred years ago, you couldn't imagine the process of taking some frozen fruit and ice from the freezer, adding some low-fat yogurt from a plastic cup and some juice from a can in the refrigerator, and whipping up a low-fat smoothie in the blender!

It is actually making our lives not simpler but more complicated. We have lost many of the simpler things in our lives, like the simple acts of selecting our evening meal, preparing it, and enjoying it with our loved ones, and we are worse off for it.

Granted, people are busier nowadays and do not have as much time as they did in the past, but I believe that people have forgotten the importance of healthy, fresh food and of the time a family spends together preparing the food. So, I would say that having food that is easy to prepare has had many disadvantages.

Today more and more people attend college or university. But why? As a student of a key university, I want to give my opinion.

Of course, we attend university to increase knowledge. University provides some basic knowledge for our research or our career in the following years. It provides basic information about the major we chose, such as what it research in. If you find that you are not interested in that major, u can change it, till u find one u are interested in. It also provides knowledge for all majors, such as advanced mathematic, English, physics, basic chemistry. Teacher there can help you to decide what you do in the future, to enter a graduate school or to take a job. We must do a lot of experiment during the school years, that makes us quite capable. We visit a factory in the second year to get a general idea about the work our major do. And we have a internship in the third year to do the real work.

Then, you can get new experience from university. You can join the student union or join a club. You can learn a lot from it. First, you can learn how to communicate with the different people. And u can learn how to organize a meeting or a party.

And also you can prepare for your career. There are lots of programs to let the students be trained for a job. University runs the program by cooperating with some very large company, some manager from the company will give us some courses which teach us how to run a company, how to lead your group to finish the work, how to cope with some problem, and how to be more confident. And they also tell us which kind of employee they want in the company. These things are quite useful for us, especially for those who want to get a job after graduation.

Now you know that university is quite useful, but the most important thing it teaches us is not the knowledge nor the experience, it is how to think and how to learn.

College is a place that the students can learn more and new knowledge and experience in it. Of course, different people have different reason to study in college. For example, some people want to be to go on a further study after they graduate from the college; some people hope to find a good job after their studying in the college and also some people wish to exchange their present situation through studying in the college. In my opinion, no matter what reason people study in the college for, studying in the college is just a preparation for their future life.

First of all, students can learn new knowledge and experiences from the studying in the college. There are many teachers, professors with abundant teaching experience who teach students lots of new knowledge and help them to solve the problems in their study. With their help, student can learn a lot of useful basic and professional knowledge which is very helpful for their future work. and study. After they finish their study in the college, students go to work in the society and contribute to the different fields. Secondly, students can learn how to arrange their own time reasonably. Before their studying in

college, their life often arranged by their parents and their study often arranged by their teachers. It is very different for them to live and study in college, because students studying in college have to arrange their life and study by themselves. They have right to arrange their part time, such as when to get up, when is the sport-time, when to finish the assignment etc. This is very important experience for students' work and life in the future.

Secondly, studying in the college make students having opportunity to live with other student and learn how to cooperate with other people. Usually, people often have uncomfortable feeling to live with a stranger, because they do not know each other and perhaps their habit and personality are different. But for the long run, it is good for them. They have to cooperate with each other and solve a lot of problems they will face together. Gradually, they can learn how to care and understand other people. It is a preparation for students to go to cooperate with other people in the society.

All in all, students not only can learn lots of new knowledge from the books but also can learn much more necessary experience such as how to arrange time and how to cooperate with other people. It is ver important for their future work and life.
