一、鼓励性

“好笔力。好见地。读史有眼。立论有识。小子可造。其竭力用功，勉成大器。”这是小学教师给后来成为伟大文学家的茅盾的作文评语。其时“小子”才十二三岁，无论他如何天资聪颖，教师的评语还是有点言过其实的。但是，谁又敢否认，正是教师那鼓励得激奋人心的评语，很大程度上促使了少年茅盾成为后来的一代文豪呢？

所谓商榷性，就是指给学生习作指出缺点时，要求老师用启发的方式和商量探讨的口吻。这是一种民主的作风，也是对学生民主意识的培养和熏陶。而且使用商确性的'语气，学生容易接受。那位老先生给少年茅盾的作文评语，就极为重视这一点：“此句似与前有重复意”。（《茅盾全集·武候治蜀王猛治秦论》）“豪则豪矣少年人不宜有此悲凉语。”（《茅盾全集·学堂卫生策》）

三、针对性

“语句通顺，层次分明，但语言欠生动。中心欠突出……”这样空洞的程式化的评语屡见不鲜，但都是无助于提高学生作文能力的。评语应该根据写作训练目标，有所侧重地写出，不宜面面俱到。如老先生给少年茅盾《文不爱钱武不惜死论》一文的评语，就是主要针对文字功夫来讲的：“慷慨而谈。旁若无人。气势雄伟。笔锋锐利。正有王郎拔剑斫地之概。”
