如果单从纯粹的文理分科来说，大部分与金融投资有关的专业都应列入文科(财经类专业)。在很多高校里，其他财经专业的数学课程开设的是相对简单的经济数学，而金融类专业开设的则是高等数学。由此可见，金融类专业对同学们数学的要求大都非常高，尤其是证券、保险类，其中保险专业会涉及到一个保险精算师的职业资格考试，数学科目之难让很多数学专业的同学都为之咋舌。

投资学：与股市最相关的专业显然是投资学，在我国，投资学专业是最近几年才从金融学专业中脱离出来的。应届毕业生的头份工作一般都是一线的操作员，因为没有任何单位会让一个没有工作经验的员工进入管理层，即使是基层管理岗位。同投资学一样，金融工程、保险学、证券投资管理等专业也都是先后脱胎于金融学专业。上述专业的毕业生在面对金融行业单位招聘时，机会几乎是均等的。所以，我们经常能见到在银行上班的投资学专业毕业生，在证券公司上班的金融学专业毕业生。

金融工程、金融学与国际金融：大部分金融类专业都是从金融学专业衍生而来，金融工程和国际金融也不例外。三者的最大区别在于，金融工程更偏微观一些，主要教授金融行业内的技术、操作和原理;金融学则更偏向宏观，管理的成分更多一些。从课程上看，最直观的便是对数学的要求不一样，金融工程一般要多出线性代数和高等数学的内容，其专业课程也更多地以数学工具作为基础。国际金融因其涉及到对外金融业务，故对英语的要求会更高。

金融工程与证券投资管理：很多高校的金融工程专业就包含证券投资管理方向，比如东北财经大学。但如果没有特别说明，证券投资管理就只属于金融工程专业同学学习课程中的部分内容。

证券投资管理专业是由于股市热闹而选择金融类专业考生的“正选”。其实普通高校的该专业毕业生中只有极少数才会谋求到预期的高薪高职，也并不能很快凭借专业知识通过炒股而获得收益，只能进入证券公司从普通的职员做起――这种工作机会使毕业生会面临很多竞争。但是，科班出身毕竟比其他人机会要多，而且更容易上手和获得认可。毕业生要想获得跨国投资银行和咨询公司的青睐，一般只有通过考研或出国留学才有一定的成功率。

保险学：保险学专业的就业和大形势一致，行业内充满机会，高薪人群日渐增多，但初级人才，也就是毕业生的待遇一般，工作压力大而且相对比较辛苦。他们需要积累一定的工作经验和业绩以后，才能分享到保险业高速发展的成果。在可以预见的将来，中国保险市场还将会有非常广阔的发展空间。保监会对于保险专业的教学模式分为“西南模式”、“武汉模式”和“南开模式”，其对应的大学分别是西南财经大学、中南财经政法大学和南开大学。保险业的“黄埔军校”是位于湖南长沙的保险职业学院。
