My initial interest in the petroleum industry and geosciences stemmed from an epiphany I had whilst engaged in conversation with a young, successful Dutchman in Dubai. This man was a friend of my Fathers who was discussing with me the terms of a Shell sponsorship through University, and essentially who I would aspire to become.

I had always known about the attractiveness of the industry which my Father has been involved in for close to forty years and knew that it was where I would be “destined to pursue a career”; the only question was, in which field of work?

I have always been fascinated by and excelled in Geography and Physics. Having achieved the Geography prize in both Higher and Standard Grade, as well as merits in Physics. I have chosen to study Petroleum Geology/ Geosciences as it is a unique combination that will satisfy my interest and ability in both subjects and develop and nurture my skills to further aid my entry into the industry.

My love of the Earth's natural Geography has long affected my ambitions outside of school. Skiing, scuba diving and fell running have taken me to some of the most awe inspiring places on the planet in pursuit of experiencing and seeing new things, as well as excelling my passion for travel. I have visited the Alps, Caucus mountains, Cancun and Dubai pursuing these activities. I also play Volleyball with the Bon Accord men's team and attend weekly training sessions. I have also captained my schools volleyball team. Another of my interests I adopted at an early age was athletics. I was dedicated to my training for five years and won many prized awards, including a Gold medal in high jump at the Scottish East District Championships, and fifteenth place in the Scottish Cross Country Championships. My completion of The Duke of Edinburgh Award to the extent of Gold Award is one of my most prided achievements. It has matured me and taught me many invaluable life skills such as the importance of respect, responsibility, dedication and team work. As part of my award I was nominated after application and interview by Laurencekirk and District Rotary Club to be their representative for the R.Y.L.A young leaders' camp. This involved me spending one week with 60 other nominated “young leaders” at the Abernethy Outdoor centre participating in an abundance of team based activities ranging from kayaking to rock climbing. This greatly improved my abilities in leadership as well as operating as part of a group in stressful situations. Another of my achievements I pride myself upon is my position as senior prefect and my awards as both prefect of the term and year. This position involves me along with my partner leading a team of 18 prefects and helping the senior management team by representing the school in various areas of the school system.

My varied record of work experiences has taught me a lot about myself and the “real world”. Being a silver service waiter and barman at Drumtochty Castle, one of Scotland's most prestigious wedding venues has greatly improved my communication and social skills, and my seasonal job as a potato roager has taught me the ethic of hard work and persistence.

1、本科

(1)申请条件

学历:高三学生、大学在读学生;

语言成绩:无需TOEFL 或IELTS语言, 高考成绩单( 二本录取分数之上)。

(2)申请材料

本科成绩单:中英文的各一份,并须经过原校的认可签注。

英文水平证明:一般应具有托福或ETS的成绩。寄送成绩,有些大学如甚至不一定要托福成绩,大陆的四、六级证书也可接受。不过一个好的英语成绩显然更有竞争力。

GRE成绩:随着竞争的激烈,香港的大学现在又要求GRE成绩,与托福一样,只需复印件即可。这两项可以为我们节省25美元。

申请表格:一般来说,只要发一个电子邮件给招生办公室或者系里,对方便会寄来有关表格。香港的大学会要求你说明自己的研究意向,当然只要一个很宽泛的范围即可,无须非常具体。材料一般是免费的,如果觉得麻烦,甚至可以从网上下载。

研究计划:(RESEARCH PROPOSAL)是纯学术的,无须加入诸如个人经历、感情这些东西。它要求申请者要有一个明确的研究方案并对此有较好的掌握。这个计划必须是非常具体的,不能太宽泛。研究计划一般包括以下几点:

研究对象(IC),即你想要解决的问题;研究此问题的意义;前人的研究状况即遗留的问题;你的研究方法(METHODOLOGY);参考文献(BIBLIOGRAPHY):这一点很重要,但往往会被忽视。

一般来说,建议你先与某位教授联系,确定研究的题目、方法等,取得教授的同意后,在递交正式的计划。当然,如果你能引起教授的注意,请他为你提意见甚至给你修改,那么成功的几率就很大了。

推荐信:香港的大学一般只要两封推荐信,但必须是学术领域中的人,其他人则不被接受。推荐信是一、两份表格,而不是洋洋洒洒的一大篇。其内容是对你学术才能的评价。此外还要求对你的研究计划做出评价和建议,这一点也不应忽视。

此外就剩下申请费(APPLICATTON FEE)了。一般一两百港币,一般人均能承受。

学费方面不算太贵,学费平均年约五万港元!但有一些会贵一点,如医科、工程……但平均五万元该差不多了!至于生活则丰俭由人,住宿舍、食饭堂、少娱乐、多看书、专心学、勤温习……可能月费不到四千元,所以的算是便宜。生活费普通来说,每月约四千多,一年大约连书簿也要五万多……即一年约花费十一万左右。

2、研究生

(1)本科院校背景

拥有一个大家都耳熟能详的院校背景就如虎添翼一般。比如说“211”或者“985“,拥有这样学术背景的学生在商科专业上的优势特别明显。香港科技大学的“经济学”专业,在官网上对往年录取学生的学校背景做了个总结。从中我们可以看出,大多数拿到录取通知单的学生学校背景多为重点大学。

(2)GPA成绩

意愿申请香港硕士留学的专业,一般建议学生的成绩在85分以上,方能具备最基本的竞争能力,特别是针对普通大学的学生。绩点分可谓是越高越好。

(3)雅思成绩

这个是针对商科申请的专业。对于部分专业,如香港中文大学的“金融学”专业和香港浸会大学的“应用会计与金融”,GMAT 是除了语言成绩之外,强制要考的科目。但是对于其他的商科专业虽非强制科目,但是如果在有优异的语言成绩基础上,有好的GMAT成绩对申请也是大有裨益的。

(4)实践经验

港校授课方式多与英联邦的授课方式类似。所以港校比较喜欢有海外交流背景的学生,而天天读死书,死读书的学生就有些不易了。

(5)发表的学术论文

正如同第四点所言,港校授课方式与英联邦授课方式相似,因此,对于有发表过学术论文的学生边角青睐。

港澳通行证收费依据及标准

(一)收费依据

《国家发展和改革委员会、财政部关于电信网码号资源占用费等部分行政事业性收费标准的通知》(发改价格1186号)。

(二)收费标准

往来港澳通行证每证80元,往来港澳一次有效签注每件15元,二次有效签注每件30元,短期(不超过一年)多次有效签注每件80元,一年以上(不含一年)两年以下(含两年)多次有效签注每件120元,两年以上(不含两年)三年以下(不含三年)多次有效签注每件160元,长期(三年以上,含三年)多次有效签注每件240元。

(三)审批机构进行审核,作出批准或者不予批准的决定,不予批准的,审批机构向申请人出具《不予批准决定书》。

(四)申请人领取证件。

港澳通行证办理方式

内地居民申请往来港澳通行证和签注,须由本人向公安机关出入境管理部门提出申请,但有下列情形之一的,按照相应规定提交申请:

(一)未满16周岁人员申请往来港澳通行证的,由监护人或者监护人委托他人陪同申请。监护人应当提交监护证明(如出生证明、户口簿等)、居民身份证等身份证明并留存复印件;监护人委托他人陪同的,还须提交委托书以及陪同人的居民身份证等身份证明并留存复印件。

(二)已持有效往来港澳通行证,在原往来港澳通行证或者原签注申请受理部门申请签注的,可以委托他人代为申请。委托他人代为申请的,委托人须出具委托书,被委托人须交验本人居民身份证原件,并提交复印件。申请人在港澳地区的,不得委托他人代为申请。

(三)已持有效往来港澳通行证,通过劳务经营公司组织赴香港或者澳门就业的,以及在港澳就业期间继续申请逗留签注的,可由劳务经营公司代为申请逗留签注。劳务经营公司须事先将公司印章、负责人签名向劳务经营公司所在地有关公安机关出入境管理部门备案。

(四)内地居民按照有关规定在香港或者澳门向深圳或者珠海签证办提出申请的,可通过香港或者澳门中国旅行社提交有关申请材料。

香港留学办理赴港签证流程

问:获得录取之後,何时开始办理赴港签证手续?需时多久?如何办理?

答:按照香港特区政府入境条例,凡没有香港特区居留权,而欲来港接受教育的非本地人士,都必须申请学生签证。在一般的情况下,通常只有修读全日制课程的非本地人士,才会获得签发学生签证。所有内地学生来港就学,都必须由香港的校方提供入境签证担保。故此,香港的大学会为获得录取入学并修读全日制本科学士或研究学位课程的内地学生作签证担保,并协助安排将申请送交香港入境事务处审批。在一般情况下,申请签证的时间大概需时6-8周。内地同学获学校录取後,应立即着手办理申请香港特区入境签证手续。学校会在发出录取通知书的同时,把香港特区入境签证申请表格一同寄给考生。同学若接受有关的课程录取,应在限定的时间内,把填好的签证申请表格及证明文件寄回本校招生处。

步骤如下:

2.填好学校文件《入学申请人要求签证担保书》,以书面委托本校提供特区签证担保。

3.下列文件之复印本,连同已填好的《入境签证申请表格》及《要求担保书》寄回本校招生处:

内地居民身份证;

户籍证明文件或常住人口登记卡;

学历证明文件;

本校发出的录取通知书;

经济证明;

特区入境签证费用及专递签证邮费之缴费证明。

4.待收集所需文件后,学校会将申请送交入境事务处审批。香港入境许可证批出后,学校会将证件以专递邮件寄给同学。

1. 不要讲故事

如果可以选择的话,你是更喜欢读小说还是读报纸?显而易见是小说。为什么呢?因为报纸给你的仅仅是新闻和一些夺人眼球的标题,而小说则是在讲述一个故事。一段优美的文字可以让你和文字间产生共鸣。它可以让你感受丰满的人物,带你进入故事情节中。你会想象你是故事中的人物,理解他在故事中做的事与决定。相比起陈述我们更容易记住故事,因为故事可以连接你我,而陈述不行。

2. 不要写太多长难句

很多同学喜欢写长难句,恨不得一段话就写一个句子,而且特别喜欢用一些很高级的词汇和语法。这并不是很科学的方式。语言最重要的功能是让对方了解你的意思,而且文书也不是秀语言能力的地方,文书最重要的功能是让教授了解你的学术能力和科研能力。所以,文书的语言不需要太过复杂,最要的是逻辑清晰,符合外国人的语言习惯。很多学生写的长难句,也就只有中国人能看懂,看似没有语法错误,但是完全不符合外国人的语言习惯,教授根本看不懂在写什么。

3. 最重要的是逻辑

如果你问我,文书书写的时候最需要注意什么,我会毫不犹豫的说:逻辑!用什么样的逻辑去写文书,这取决于你的背景是怎么样的。如果你的学术能力很强,通篇的逻辑就是要着重强调你都做过哪些项目,发表过哪些文章,经过前面的摆事实,给教授得出的结论就是,你的学术能力完全能胜任。

如果你没怎么发表过文章,但是有好几年的工作经验,文书的逻辑重点就是你的工作能容,在工作期间解决的问题,得到的训练,最终通过前面的描述告诉教授,虽然你没有什么文章,但是经过这几年的工作,你已经做了足够的项目,掌握了足够的知识,完全满足职位的要求。

如果你学术的能力一般,也没发表过什么文章,文书的逻辑重点就应该是你在校期间修过的课程,跟申请的项目相关的课程,需要在文书里重点描述。主要讲一下,你在课程中学到了哪些项目相关的知识,课程设计中锻炼了哪些能力等等。如果参加过专业相关的比赛,而也可以详细的描述一下。总之,整篇文章的逻辑就是要告诉教授,虽然你没发表过什么文章,但是你受过的专业训练,让你有能力胜任博士职位。

Acclaimed as a prodigy, I entered into one of China’s Ivy League universities at 14 and joined the country’s topmost scientific research institution as a graduate student at 19. Now an experienced engineer at 26, I would like to scale still higher intellectual heights by undertaking advanced studies that I hope would put me firmly on the cutting edge of scientific development.

I have demonstrated a keen mind since my early childhood. For years, I consistently outperformed all of my classmates in such challenging subjects as mathematics, physics and chemistry. I was thus chosen to represent either my school or my city in a variety of provincial and national contests of academic skills, in which I won numerous prizes. This impressive academic record put me on academic acceleration several times. That not only enabled me to finish my primary and secondary education in eight instead of the usual twelve years but also sent me at 14 to a privileged class for the gifted at the Chinese University of Science and Technology, a major cradle of the country’s scientific and technological talents.

After two years of basic training in the gifted class, I chose electrical engineering as my major and computer software programming as my minor, convinced that expertise in these fields would stand me in good stead in an era of China’s rapid economic expansion and technological modernization. As you can see from the transcripts of my undergraduate grades, I excelled in both of these areas.

Upon graduation in 1991, I won easy acceptance into the Institute of Electronics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and became a graduate student at 19, when most Chinese students would be just starting their university education. After I obtained my Master’s Degree in Engineering in 1994, I first took up a job with a telecommunication company, where I managed a trunk communication system that resembled the cellular wireless system. A year later, I joined a software company to develop CMIS program for China’s Post and Telecommunications Ministry. It was a large project, and I made crucial contribution to it by independently developing and finalizing one subsystem, which proved to be a significant success and won me profuse appreciation from users. After the completion of that project, I have been working for the Japan Brother Ltd. in the area of software development.

The relative smooth path of my career notwithstanding, I have not had a chance to lead a major project, although I have always finished my part of every project immaculately. In spite of all my achievements, I feel that I have not taken the full advantages of my intellectual capabilities. I now wish to pursue still more advanced studies and thereby obtain an advanced degree so that I can open more doors and shoulder greater responsibilities.

For many years I have enjoyed designing logos, packaging and coming up with creative campaign concepts. Since learning that Graphic Design is something that I’m driven towards I have gained an interest and spectrum of knowledge about graphic designers such as Milton Glaser, Herb Lubalin and Paul Rand. Their works have inspired me to develop my own skills and have given me an insight as to how to establish a creative mind-set.

Working within the Communications and PR, Film and Graphic Design Departments at Imperial College whilst on work experience, I was able to explore different ways of communicating through social media, film and print design. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Graphic Design team where I was able to see how various software’s were used to develop banners for the university fair.

During my placement I learnt how fundamental research is and how it is conducted during the whole design process. After the placement I was more decisive about wanting to delve into the world of Graphic Design, hence I set about finding a work placement that solely focused on Graphic Design. My second placement was at Virgin Media, where I worked with graphic designers and UX designers and was introduced to the field of digital design. I attended meetings where briefs were being discussed and was able to follow the journey of the graphic designers to witness how they went about delivering the brief; and helping design assets for the website. The placement allowed me to comprehend what digital design consisted of and learn about the works of alternative designers such as UX designers. My enthusiasm for Graphic Design made me want to expand my knowledge, hence I took a Graphic Design course at Central Saint Martins. The course was completely different to my professional work placements. The course prohibited the use of computers and all artefacts were formulated from research trips and materials; making me realise the extent of graphic design. The manner in which I worked was refreshing from constantly collaborating with software. After the course I was able to understand that there are various methods of communicating which do not involve software. In my free time I self-teach myself Photoshop and Illustrator through tutorials. I also enjoy self-initiating briefs for myself, as well as briefs set by agencies such as D&AD, RSA and YCN which provide me with a creative challenge. For example I have ‘restyled street style’ for ASOS, which was a brief set by D&AD. I also voluntarily design logos for businesses, go to contemporary galleries, the Barbican Centre, research trips for my creative briefs and work on my briefs.

I also look forward to the annual London Design Week, where I have become educated about designers and new design processes and am able to draw inspiration upon. I have volunteered helping teach 6-9 year olds at my community art club, which I attended for 3 years. I have achieved the Bronze D of E, had a part time job for one year at a high end retail store and was part of my local netball club where I trained and competed. Completing these activities has enabled me develop a strong sense of co-operation, teamwork, good social skills and commitment which would greatly benefit me whilst studying a degree. Graphic Design is always around us, and learning how to communicate in avisual manner has inspired me to learn more about the subject. The words‘create’ and ‘design’ have always sparked a sense of enthusiasm and excitementwithin me. From an early age I have always had a creative characteristic which Ifeel is my most dominant. For many years I have enjoyed designing logos,packaging and coming up with creative campaign concepts. Since learning thatGraphic Design is something that I’m driven towards I have gained an interestand spectrum of knowledge about graphic designers such as Milton Glaser, HerbLubalin and Paul Rand. Their works have inspired me to develop my own skills andhave given me an insight as to how to establish a creative mind-set.

Working within the Communications and PR, Film and Graphic DesignDepartments at Imperial College whilst on work experience, I was able to exploredifferent ways of communicating through social media, film and print design. Ithoroughly enjoyed my time with the Graphic Design team where I was able to seehow various software’s were used to develop banners for the university fair.

During my placement I learnt how fundamental research is and how it isconducted during the whole design process. After the placement I was moredecisive about wanting to delve into the world of Graphic Design, hence I setabout finding a work placement that solely focused on Graphic Design. My secondplacement was at Virgin Media, where I worked with graphic designers and UXdesigners and was introduced to the field of digital design. I attended meetingswhere briefs were being discussed and was able to follow the journey of thegraphic designers to witness how they went about delivering the brief; andhelping design assets for the website. The placement allowed me to comprehendwhat digital design consisted of and learn about the works of alternativedesigners such as UX designers. My enthusiasm for Graphic Design made me want toexpand my knowledge, hence I took a Graphic Design course at Central SaintMartins. The course was completely different to my professional work placements.The course prohibited the use of computers and all artefacts were formulatedfrom research trips and materials; making me realise the extent of graphicdesign. The manner in which I worked was refreshing from constantlycollaborating with software. After the course I was able to understand thatthere are various methods of communicating which do not involve software. In myfree time I self-teach myself Photoshop and Illustrator through tutorials. Ialso enjoy self-initiating briefs for myself, as well as briefs set by agenciessuch as D&AD, RSA and YCN which provide me with a creative challenge. Forexample I have ‘restyled street style’ for ASOS, which was a brief set byD&AD. I also voluntarily design logos for businesses, go to contemporarygalleries, the Barbican Centre, research trips for my creative briefs and workon my briefs.

I also look forward to the annual London Design Week, where I have becomeeducated about designers and new design processes and am able to drawinspiration upon. I have volunteered helping teach 6-9 year olds at my communityart club, which I attended for 3 years. I have achieved the Bronze D of E, had apart time job for one year at a high end retail store and was part of my localnetball club where I trained and competed. Completing these activities hasenabled me develop a strong sense of co-operation, teamwork, good social skillsand commitment which would greatly benefit me whilst studying a degree. I try toseek all possible opportunities to help me advance my skills in Graphic Design,and feel that having the opportunity to take my admiration of design to degreelevel would be extremely rewarding. I’m self-motivated and eager to startdevoting my time and attention to Graphic Design, and am positive universitywill help me excel in what I like doing best.
