Dear _,

Among the 26 English alphabets, the one I like most is the capitalized D because this alphabet, simple as it is, is the most beautiful one. The two strokes, one vertical line and one curve, adumbrate two totally divergent trajectories as if serving as constant indicator of the psyche of the professionals in the advertising industry: to travel from one point to another, there is an infinite number of routes to choose; but ultimately speaking, there are only two routes: one is along a straight line, the other along a curve. While the general public may opt for the first, advertising professionals should decide on the second. A curved trajectory may well enable one to expand his horizon, enrich his experience of life, and cultivate his capability for excellent interpersonal exchange and communication. I maintain the conviction that the longer the journey of life that one travels, the richer the experience one can derive from life and hence the greater the novelty that he can create out of the apparently commonplace.

In , I entered _ University with remarkable performance at the National College Entrance Examination (among the top 10 percent of the participants majoring in Humanities Disciplines). During the first year of my undergraduate studies, I majored in International Law but it immediately dawned on me that I was not meant for studies in this field and my real interest lied in advertising. Therefore, with extra efforts I audited all the major courses in advertising and in the second year, with a solid command of all the theoretical knowledge of the basic courses, I transferred to Advertising Speciality. Once I embarked on studying what really interested me, I made rapid progress and my GPA reached 3.5 (among the top three for 26 students of my class). In addition, I achieved the highest score of the class in four most important courses in the field: History of Chinese and Foreign Advertising, Principles of Advertising, Advertisement Planning, and Mass Communication.

As I delved deeper into my subject, I came to acquire an increasingly profound understanding of the nature of advertising. As a matter of fact, advertising is an art of persuasion, concerned with how the advertiser can influence the behavior and value orientation of the general public with his individually unique mentality and perspective. It is an integral branch of mass communication, inextricably intertwined with both art and economics. At the same time, it requires a framework of scientific management. In the course of my studies, I learned to exploit another form of language, my advertising designs, to conduct dialogues with my audience and to convey through those work my ideas and perceptions in order to achieve the objective of affecting the recipients' psychology and conduct and realizing the value of communication. But I ventured beyond the mere designing of individual advertisements. I also attempted at a series of coordination work that included the planning, execution, solution and effect of advertising. This process helped me to perfect my framework of theoretical conceptions concerning such notions as personal communication, interpersonal communication and mass communication. I immersed myself in a wide variety of advertising courses. By studying advertising, I could feel the joy of thinking and the charm of knowledge.

Advertising is an art more to be practiced than theorized. For my extra-curricular practice, I worked part-time for the WuHan Silver-Horse Advertising Corporation, an advertising agency which enjoys very prestigious reputation in and around WuHan. After being subjected to the most rigorous screening test, I was recruited as one of the five undergraduate students from my university and worked on several projects under the direct leadership of the chief supervisor of the Planning Department. On account of my distinctive notion and original creativity, my design for an advertisement for an automobile maintenance center was adopted, a fact which adequately evinces my professional qualities and tremendous potential. Later, with strong recommendations from my teacher, I worked at a medium-size advertising company in Beijing, responsible for the advertising agent business in the magazine Global Weekly. With the company's support, I participated in a number of designing contests ranging from the 10th Golden Calf Advertising Contest sponsored by the Taiwan's China Times, the 2nd Academy Advertising Competition sponsored by China Advertising Association to the Annual CAC Public Welfare Advertising Competition sponsored by the publishing house of International Advertising Magazine. My participation in those events not only brought me important awards but also enabled me to derive much professional knowledge from the exchange and cooperation with other staff, apart from enhancing my hands-on ability and practical problem-solving skills.

I took part consecutively in two authoritative Competitions for Young Advertisers, which aroused my attention to the discrepancies in the advertising level and the advertising consciousness between Taiwan and mainland China as well as the disparity in the advertising management. In order to call the serious attention of China's advertising industry to those problems, I published a full-length academic paper entitled On the Eve of WTO Accession: A Perspective on the Present Conditions of Advertising Management on Mainland China on the website of China Advertising Communication and Research (this website is launched by XiaMen University, the first university in China to have established an Advertising Department and which enjoys a very high academic prestige).

Historically speaking, China's advertising industry can only be described as underdeveloped compared with that of the advanced Western countries. Although China's advertising industry is achieving remarkable development around the turn of the century, challenges and obstacles are equally serious. For instance, the relationship between the client, the media and the advertising company has not been properly established. The advertising agent system and the relevant legal regulations of advertising are not fully developed. The awareness of self-discipline is weak within this profession and a sound system of social supervision over unlawful advertising practices is lacking.

With China's immediate accession into WTO, China's overall advertising industry will face severe challenges presented by major international advertising agencies. On the other hand, China promises a bright and alluring prospect in advertising industry as China has the largest advertising market among the developing countries. The profit of the advertising industry maintains an annual growth rate of 39.73. Such a growth momentum is sufficient to indicate the tremendous dimension and the exciting prospect of China's future advertising industry. This situation necessarily calls for the emergence of a large number of highly qualified advertising professionals, especially those who can incorporate both their intimate knowledge of China's domestic advertising market and international advertising background.

It is precisely against this backdrop that I, equipped with a solid groundwork (at once theoretical and empirical) in the field of advertising acquired from my undergraduate education, wish to apply for a graduate program. My motivation is fairly simple: only the United States, a country with the most unparalleled development in advertising industry and the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in mass communication of which advertising is a part, can offer the necessary environment in which I can mature toward my professional goals.

Now that I have charted my course of action, I am on the verge of proceeding from one point of my life to another point. To return to my metaphor of the alphabet D, I have decided to relinquish the effortless straight line in favor of the beautiful curve, for I believe that whatever the turns and twists alongside it, it will ultimately lead to my prescribed ideal. The profound truth inherent in it has already been given the most poetical pronunciation by the poet Robert Frost at the conclusion of his The Road Not Taken: Two roads diverged in the wood, and I - / I took the one less traveled by / And that has made all the difference.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

I am applying for acceptance into your graduate program for a Doctor’s degree in statistics. I plan to begin my studies in the fall of 1998. Nature is full of mysteries, one of which seems to be its apparent readiness to conform with mathematical principles. Such mysteries have fascinated me since my childhood, prompting me to avidly read scientific writings by Hua Lougeng, China’s most celebrated mathematician in the modern era, even while I was still in primary school. Unable to fully understand Hua’s books as I must have been, I learned that mathematics was itself wrapped with mysteries.

My intense interest, coupled with my hard work, in mathematics paid off. During my third year in senior middle school, I took part in the National Mathematics Contest for students in secondary education, and succeeded in winning the tenth spot in a lineup of some two hundred thousand selected participants. It was at that time that I made up my mind to pursue a career in mathematics. In 1985, I entered into the East China Normal University to major in mathematics. The mandatory courses ware concentrated mainly in two areas: statistics and application technologies. There were also many elective courses. In addition to courses of statistics and mathematics, I spent a lot of time and energy learning such practical skills as computer programming and the application of some new software systems in statistics. After graduation in 1990, I taught statistics for four years at another university until I decided that I had to satisfy my curiosity further and learn more. In 1994, I joined a graduate program at the Beijing Polytechnic University, where I concentrated my studies in the area of artificial intelligence.

Never a bookworm, I presided over a sampling survey of the middle schools in Shanghai, and published my findings in the ECNU journal. The topic for my graduation paper, the problem of slow server, was actually culled from an article published in pursuing more advanced studies in a technologically more advanced country such as the United States. These journals provided me the necessary quality and amount of reference materials t keep me informed of the cutting edge of the field. The new method that I used in my research and my smooth answers at my defense of the paper could all trace their origin back to the journals that I had read. On the basis of my strong defense, the supervising committee decided unanimously t grant me an unequivocal A for my graduation paper. During the period of my graduate studies, I learned more about the realization technology (not sure what you are trying to say) by using computer programming. In image processing, I used the multianalysis and category theory in statistics, and I helped to institute a recognition system for major fingerprint characteristics. I have been working as a lecturer at the Beijing Polytechnic University since I obtained my Master’s degree. Besides teaching, I have been conducting market analysis as part of several research teams.

I have basically two main reasons to wish for further studies abroad. First, the rapid development of the statistical science fascinates me, and I would like to stand firmly on the cutting edge of the field by having myself grounded in more advanced theories. Second, the market research that I am now involved in is pushing me to master newer and better methodologies, I believe that graduate studies with your department is one of the best ways for me to attain both purposes.

I am convinced that the academic foundation I have laid in both theoretical frameworks and practical skills will help me make a competent student in my proposed studies. I am looking forward to the day when I shall return to China with a Doctor’s degree to make more contribution to the development of the science of statistics in this country.

Yours sincerely,

In capacity as Professor of Mathematics at Fudan Universitym writing to recommend Mr. Wangesintosyour PhD program in Computer Science. I have known Mr. Wang since his sophomore year of collegend have acted as his thesis advisormentor. In my experiencee is a gifteddiligent studentnd an admirably hard worker.

Wang is an impressive student because he has been forced to overcome the significant challenge of a serious illness during his freshman year. When I first met Wang in my Discrete Math classe did not appear to be anything special to me. While his exam scores were good hey were not as high as I would now expect of him.

What I didnt know then was that due to his illnessang was attempting to take all of the difficult early mathematics courses at one time ncluding Discrete Mathematics dvanced Mathematics inear Algebr and Possibilities. While most students found preparing for just one set of these exams difficultang was overwhelmed by four of them. But in the end achieved an impressive score on the final exam hich made me conscious of his unusual determination he demonstrates when confronting difficult challenges.

Mr. WangI have often talked about a variety of mathematicscomputer science conceptsproblems. During these discussions always found him to be delightfully intelligent. Not only does he quickly understand the conceptsproblems presented to him e is able to analyze these problemspresent solutions. But perhaps most important is that Wangs thinking is intensely rigorous. When looking at any question carefully scrutinizes itif he finds any uncertain issue

he clears them up immediately. I believe this kind of thought is essential to become an excellent computer programmer.

Serving as his thesis advisor had a first-hand opportunity to observe the way in which Wangs mind works. In his senor thesis . Wang mainly discussed two challenging questions in regards to″ANN″.In our books in China nowledge of ANNits uses are very rare. Few people in China have studied this topicconsequently he materials that are available on ANN are limited. Working on this difficult project ot only did Mr. Wang rise to the challenge ut he went abovebeyond the call of duty to analyze his secondary sourcestest them for accuracy in practice. In this way found mistakes in the book that we use. His diligencehard work made me extremely proud of him.

Dear x,

Graphic Design is always around us, and learning how to communicate in avisual manner has inspired me to learn more about the subject. The words‘create’ and ‘design’ have always sparked a sense of enthusiasm and excitementwithin me. From an early age I have always had a creative characteristic which Ifeel is my most dominant. For many years I have enjoyed designing logos, packaging and coming up with creative campaign concepts. Since learning thatGraphic Design is something that I’m driven towards I have gained an interestand spectrum of knowledge about graphic designers such as Milton Glaser, HerbLubalin and Paul Rand. Their works have inspired me to develop my own skills andhave given me an insight as to how to establish a creative mind-set.

Dear XX,

When asked why I like Mathematics, I realised that it is all down to mypersonality. Being a composed, explicit person, I enjoy the challenge ofquestions with unequivocal answers. My character’s orderly side draws meenthusiastically towards neat solutions, my creativity gives rise to myacceptance of new ideas and my positive mind results in my wish to succeed. Allquestions have definite answers; we just need to construct ways of reachingthem.

Mathematics at AS Level opened my mind to several new areas of algebra, sequences and series, and functions. I keenly welcomed the new techniques andenjoyed all aspects of the course. Some of my favourite areas, however, weretrigonometry and calculus; it was fascinating to see how trigonometric functionscome together in a few simple identities! Being new to the methods ofdifferentiation and integration, I spent extra time going over examples, whichsoon became clear in my mind. I look forward to investigating these topicsfurther in the A2 modules.

In addition to retaining a strong interest in Mathematics, my fascinationfor computers has grown. Nevertheless, I was unsure of whether or not I wantedto pursue a joint honours course of Mathematics with Computer Science, or asingle degree course of Mathematics. My decision to apply for the joint coursewas confirmed after I attended a number of Computer Science Summer Schoolcourses in London.

Joining Dubai College has given me the chance to explore new horizons.Responsibilities, such as being a prefect and Year 7 liaison, have made merealise our importance in the school as sixth formers. I am currently in theprocess of completing my Duke of Edinburgh Gold award, for which I successfullyfinished an 80km expedition through the mountains of Mauritius. I will neverforget the feelings of pure enjoyment and adventure; it was truly a challengingexperience!

Although A Levels take up a great deal of time, I manage to maintainpersonal fitness by horse riding daily. I routinely enter dressage and showjumping competitions throughout the U.A.E., where I frequently achieve a medalplace. Riding horses brings on a sense of freedom and allows me socialise out ofschool.

I have also obtained an understanding of what it is like to work amongst alarge group of people through working in various companies around Dubai. Theseincluded Barclays Bank, Prolab Digital and Palms Nursery. I particularlybenefited from my experience at Barclays, as it introduced me to many fields, such as trading, accountancy and exchange, and taught me to appreciate theevident need for teamwork.

Although I am still unsure of the path I will take after graduating, I knowthat having a Mathematics/Computing degree will give me many transferableskills. I am currently investigating a number of regions that appeal to me,which include actuarial science and further postgraduate study. For now, Iintend to approach the future positively and have many exciting thoughts. I hopeto encounter new opportunities, make new friends and rise to the challenge ofuniversity!

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

A Master’s student of accounting at Xiamen University, the best higher-learning institution in China’s strategically important Province of Fujian, across the Straits from Taiwan, I would like to pursue Ph. D. studies in your distinguished program so that I can be assured a teaching career in my motherland.

My education so far is characterized by indisputable excellence. During the four years of my undergraduate studies, my GPA was consistently the highest in my class of 135 students. As you can see from the transcripts of my academic record, I received straight A’s for all the courses except for first-year Physical Education. My graduation was rated “Outstanding”, the highest rating possible. An in-depth analysis of the ethical standards of Chinese auditors, the paper was later published in a quality professional journal as a seminal study of a rarely studied topic in China. As the unquestionably best student in my year, I was accepted into graduate studies by the university without the normally mandatory entrance examinations.

In recognition of my academic performance and other strengths, I was decorated with many honors and accolades during my undergraduate studies. I was elected the monitor of the class and the Vice President of the university’s Student Union, making me the most important female student leader on campus. Among the financial awards I won was the Jiageng Scholarship, the university’s most prestigious award named after its founder Chen Jiageng, one of the best known patriotic Chinese in the first half of this century. The Jiageng /scholarship is offered to only ten students each year, and the offer is usually presented to the recipients by the university’s president in person in a grand ceremony, as it was in , when I got it.

In my undergraduate studies, I had broad academic interests, although I majored in accounting. I regularly read academic journals, both Chinese and international, to keep me abreast of the latest developments in accounting and other related fields. I devoted considerable time to learning such subjects as law and economics. My extensive knowledge provided me solid grounding as I narrowed down my research interest to professional ethics of accountants. In a country that has only an inchoate legal regime governing professional practice. Enforcing high ethical standards is both difficult and critical. But studies have been scant and haphazard so far. I am glad that I have made quite some contribution to the country’s discourse in this area.

My undergraduate studies were greatly enriched with a most rewarding internship program. As a CPA assistant working for the Accounting Firm affiliated to the university, I took part in the auditing of several major corporations. In the process, I learned not only to put my book knowledge in practice but also acquired first-hand knowledge of how Chinese accountants, operating under inadequate laws and regulations, handled difficult issues. Such knowledge has constituted an important part of the basis for my research on the ethical questions of Chinese accountants and auditors.

In my graduate studies, I have broadened my intellectual horizon and refined my accounting expertise. The courses I took related to both theories and methodologies of accounting and auditing. But the more significant part of my learning is to be found perhaps not in the courses but in the research projects that I have taken part in together with my professors. I have, for example, helped my professors in compiling and editing a major textbook for the continuing education program of the ALL-China Association of Certified Accountants. The book, Cases of Auditing, has just been published and is expected to substantiate the curriculum of the continuing education program.

In my Ph. D. studies, I wish to focus my studies and research on auditing, particularly in relation to audit risk, auditor’s decision-making, ethics of auditing. I am also interested in accounting theories. I heard of Penn State University while I was still an undergraduate student, and I know that its accounting program is marked by selectivity and excellence. I hope that, by studying in your program, I will be able to build on my academic record so far for a promising career as a teacher in China a few years down the road.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

A teacher of “Advertising” and “Marketing”, I’m very pleased to recommend to you a student like Ms Li, who has a strong interest and great potential in marketing management, and her pursuit of further studies in marketing management under your MBA program.

Ms Li impressed me the most for her strong interest in marketing. In both the courses “Fundamentals of Advertising” and “Marketing Communication” I taught, her grades are the highest in her class. After conclusion of the two courses, she has continued to study from me “Marketing Communication”, an emerging branch of study in China. Besides what is taught in class, she often discusses with me various problems in marketing she has met in her internship and practice and tries to find solutions together with me. During her internship at an insurance company, she successfully designed a new marketing model for the company with her knowledge and insightful understanding of the business. I believe her strong interest and ability will be critical for her further achievement in this area.

Ms Li is very imaginative and innovative in her study and work. This is another advantage for her study and career in marketing management. I can still remember her superb performance in the conclusive phase of the course “Advertising”. I placed students into different groups and required each group to design a marketing solution for classroom demonstration and presentation with the aid of multimedia tools. Ms Li gave us a surprisingly informative and innovative solution in her presentation on behalf of the group she led. Her speech-making skills added to the charm of her presentation. Her demonstration and presentation is the most interesting and vivid one as well as the most satisfactory one I have received in my decades of teaching career. Her oral competency is no doubt another important supporting factor for a successful career in marketing in the future.

Based on many years of teaching experience of mine, Ms Li is a marketing management talent with great potential. I fully support her choice to study abroad. Your outstanding MBA education system and rich experience will provide a most beneficial environment for her to bring into full play her potential in marketing management. Frankly speaking, China started late in its study in marketing management. Our theoretical system is still far behind those of developed countries in the world and lacks integrity. The course “Marketing Communication” I spearheaded in the Guangzhou region is the latest effort in China for study and development of modern business theories. However, I’m fully aware at the same time that the course still calls for further improvement, e.g. incorporation of more high-profile and realistic cases that are badly needed in China today. Therefore, I do hope that Ms Li will continue with her study of and research in marketing communication in the future and introduce the latest achievements in the world to China.

(Natural resources)

Dear _,

Graphic Design is always around us, and learning how to communicate in a visual manner has inspired me to learn more about the subject. The words ‘create’ and ‘design’ have always sparked a sense of enthusiasm and excitement within me. From an early age I have always had a creative characteristic which I feel is my most dominant. For many years I have enjoyed designing logos, packaging and coming up with creative campaign concepts. Since learning that Graphic Design is something that I’m driven towards I have gained an interest and spectrum of knowledge about graphic designers such as Milton Glaser, Herb Lubalin and Paul Rand. Their works have inspired me to develop my own skills and have given me an insight as to how to establish a creative mind-set.

Working within the Communications and PR, Film and Graphic Design Departments at Imperial College whilst on work experience, I was able to explore different ways of communicating through social media, film and print design.

Mathematics at AS Level opened my mind to several new areas of algebra, sequences and series, and functions. I keenly welcomed the new techniques and enjoyed all aspects of the course. Some of my favourite areas, however, were trigonometry and calculus; it was fascinating to see how trigonometric functions come together in a few simple identities! Being new to the methods of differentiation and integration, I spent extra time going over examples, which soon became clear in my mind. I look forward to investigating these topics further in the A2 modules.

In addition to retaining a strong interest in Mathematics, my fascination for computers has grown. Nevertheless, I was unsure of whether or not I wanted to pursue a joint honours course of Mathematics with Computer Science, or a single degree course of Mathematics. My decision to apply for the joint course was confirmed after I attended a number of Computer Science Summer School courses in London.

Joining Dubai College has given me the chance to explore new horizons. Responsibilities, such as being a prefect and Year 7 liaison, have made me realise our importance in the school as sixth formers. I am currently in the process of completing my Duke of Edinburgh Gold award, for which I successfully finished an 80km expedition through the mountains of Mauritius. I will never forget the feelings of pure enjoyment and adventure; it was truly a challenging experience!

Although A Levels take up a great deal of time, I manage to maintain personal fitness by horse riding daily. I routinely enter dressage and show jumping competitions throughout the U.A.E., where I frequently achieve a medal place. Riding horses brings on a sense of freedom and allows me socialise out of school.

I have also obtained an understanding of what it is like to work amongst a large group of people through working in various companies around Dubai. These included Barclays Bank, Prolab Digital and Palms Nursery. I particularly benefited from my experience at Barclays, as it introduced me to many fields, such as trading, accountancy and exchange, and taught me to appreciate the evident need for teamwork.

Although I am still unsure of the path I will take after graduating, I know that having a Mathematics/Computing degree will give me many transferable skills. I am currently investigating a number of regions that appeal to me, which include actuarial science and further postgraduate study. For now, I intend to approach the future positively and have many exciting thoughts. I hope to encounter new opportunities, make new friends and rise to the challenge of university!

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

I was born and grew up in a country energetically developed, which is China, and my childhood and teenage years coincided with the highly developmental periods of China economy. Enlightened by what I witnessed, I had developed a keen interest in economics by the time I took the university entrance exams and thus when the time came to choose a major, I picked economics. I was accepted to the Economics department of __ University, and spent the next three years fulfilling the required core classes: Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Financial Management, and Economics Law etc. Through the studies of those courses, I had the solid foundations of economics theories.

However, the more I learned about my subject of study, the more unsatisfied I felt with the curriculum's lack of innovative economics classes based on the current market model. Therefore I actively participated in many practice activities such as investigation of peasant workers into city instructed by Development Economics Group of Economics College of __ University, the economy investigation of _x, _x province, research on the data of China _ and China _ and study on restriction factors of tertiary industry development with the information acquired from State Statistics Bureau, from which I benefited a lot.

Spring of , I participated in the project of investigation about peasant workers into city organized by Development Economics Group of School of Economics in __ University, which was to investigate the life of peasant workers and the reasons for their moving into the city, analyze the effects on urban economy brought by this special group of people with economic analysis, and then put forward rational suggestions. As the leader of the investigation group in _ District, _, I had to deal with a lot of things—organized and participated in the design of questionnaires, led the group to instruct the survey and composed the final report. In _ District, I led my group to communicate with peasant workers to know their life, income and occupation, and the reasons for their movement into city. According to our survey, we composed the report “Dynamic Reason Analysis on the Migration of Rural Labor to Urban Areas”. In this report, we analyzed the reasons for peasants’ movement into city, their rural economic situation, their income in city and we also discussed the position of this special group in the development of urban economy. Then we analyzed the effects on urban economy that this special group brought and proposed policy and suggestions.

Peasant workers are regarded as an especial principal part of economy, because they give up their rural life and come to city to work. As their income and life are in still in lowest class, they can’t get rid of peasants’ status and merge themselves into city. Under such terrible condition, what drives them into city and what kind of influence they have brought to urban economy and even the national economy. In order to get the answers, we collected __ pieces of information from our survey. Because I know if we do not contact the reality by ourselves and study the real cases, we never experience hardships and never get first-hand precious information. In the whole process, I learned a lot. I learned how to deal with some economic problems, study and analyze economic phenomenon with my knowledge. What’s more, this experience strengthened my enthusiasm on economics. Also, the challenges and difficulties involved in this project made me firmer, more persistent and daring to challenge any limit, which guaranteed the successes of my future graduate studies.

I also liked communicating with others, especially with the teachers, about the knowledge both in my major as well as in other fields. One my economics teacher, _x, Economics PHD from USA, had always told us his studies there, and from the way he spoke and from what he said, I could be greatly enlightened by his plentiful experiences in USA and the highlights of his thoughts. More importantly, he made me deeply understand the advanced Economics education and perfect economics systems at abroad and made me more determined to further study Economics abroad as well. Survey on economy of _x, _x, mainly focused on the economic status, advantages and inferior resources as well as proposed suggestions and made development plans. In this project, I was the assistant of the professor. During this time, I assisted the Professor to collect and sort information, communicate with local authorities and enterprises and compose survey paper. Due to my diligence, aborative plan and honesty, I acquired the archives kept in government as well as relative data from government officials, enterprises and the places rich in resources.

_x is rich in forest. However, as economy is rapidly developing and people’s environment consciousness is strengthened in modern society, aboriginal forest, which can’t support people’s life nor agree to sustainable development, is not applicable. Therefore, local government and enterprise representatives invited professors of Economics College, _ University to take investigation and help them to make plans for their future development. I was lucky to go with professors and worked as a research assistant. When facing such an important and tough task in _x, I realized shortage of my knowledge. In terms of development plan, I didn’t know where I should go first. In the next one month, I eagerly learned knowledge at work with instruction of Professors. I earnestly completed fussy work, including collecting each piece of information, recording each talk and taking investigation, which was the essential to final strategy. With persistent hard work, we got all the essential information and professor proposed the general foreground and would make out accurate scheme based on further analysis after going back to university. At the same time, I finished my study here and completed my paper—Research Report on self-supporting economic model of _x, which was published in Future Economists, economic magazine published by Economics College of _ University. I benefited a lot from the experience in _. I learned how to analyze complicated economic problems. Most importantly, it generated my strong interests in Applied Economics, particularly in the respect of Public Economics,Labour Economics,Urban Economics and case analysis. I hope to solve actual problems with my efforts, not just to rest on theoretical research.

With the globalization of the world’s economy and the opening of China’s capital markets after its entry into the WTO, China now has a desperate need for people who know about economics in China, who have the best education in economics in the world, and who have an international economics perspective. With this in mind, I decided to visit USA - a country with advanced Economics education. Top School academic experience can build on my western economics knowledge, my multi-cultural and multi-lingual background to prepare me well for working in the large multi – national company as an outstanding economist in ten years.

I am applying to your esteem university because its rigorous program, outstanding faculty, and excellence in Economics will allow me to develop the skills I have acquired so far. As a student born and raised abroad, I will bring a new perspective to your program. It takes courage and optimism to move to another country, and to study and work in a culture radically different from one's own. I have made the best of a unique opportunity, and I will continue to take calculated risks as they come along. Moreover, I appreciate diversity and enjoy the process of learning itself, and believe I have much to contribute to the dynamic student body in your esteem university.

Yours sincerely,

奥地利公立大学包括国立音乐大学,不收取中国学生的学费。大学德语班每学期一般收取人民币2000-3000元,当学生通过德语考试进入大学后则享受免费教育;

私立音乐学院一般每学期学费折合人民币也不到1万元;

德语学校的费用则高低不同,每学期一般在人民币2000-1万元不等;

Dear _,

A senior student at the business school headed by China's tough Prime Minister, I will graduate next year with a diploma to be conferred by the Quebec Association of Certified General Accountants in Canada in the first joint educational program of its kind between China and a foreign country. To build up a great career upon this rare privilege, I am now applying for advanced studies in your quality program, hoping that I can someday become one of China's top accounting experts.

At Tsinghua, the country's most valued cradle of advanced talents that houses my favored School of Business Management, I have been head and shoulders above most of my fellow students in my class of 122. I ranked among the top 2 per cent in macroeconomics, top 3 per cent in macroeconomics, top 5 per cent in international finance, and top 2 per cent in international trading. My performance in mathematics has been particularly strong, with my GPA in related courses probably the very best in the class. The CGA diploma requires completion of 12 courses taught in English, of which I have finished eight, with a GPA better than that of most others.

My distinguished academic performance won me the privilege of being chosen as the only Special-Training Student in my class of 122 to join the university's Program for the Gifted. Through this elite program, I participated in a challenging research project headed Professor Chun Xiyang, head of the school's accounting department. The project was aimed at finding the best way to control cost at the North China Petrochemical Corporation, one of the country's best known companies. As part of my research, I studied the corporate management systems in the United States, Japan, Britain and Germany, and analyzed the structure of Chinese companies. By the time I finished my part of the project to professor Chun's satisfaction, I had not only broadened my knowledge but also acquired the ability, unique among China's undergraduate students, to conduct research independently.

Taking advantage of the university's emphasis on cultivating independent thinking and practical research abilities, I have actively engaged in a variety of research activities. I teamed up with several students to investigate into China's township enterprises and wrote a research paper under the guidance of our professors. With the help of my professor in public finance, I studied the country's taxation system that is designed to divide revenues between central and provincial governments, and I did this in comparison with the taxation regimes of America and France. My article, China's Taxation Reform, analyzed the possible approaches of improving that system. In my third academic year, I wrote The Accounting Structure in Share-holding Enterprises, an article that dealt with the solutions to the problems in the accounting system of the said companies. In my second year, I worked as an intern at China Industrial and Commercial Bank and acquainted myself thereby with the prevalent accounting practices of the country's financial institutions. Such involvement in practical research has added both depth and breadth to my learning of accounting.

Much of my academic achievements can be credited to my solid command of the English, which has allowed me to read international accounting journals with ease. Among my regular readings are Accounting Review, Accountancy, Public Finance Review, and others. I have translated Proposed Statement of Financial Accounting Concepts. My English proficiency is also reflected in the scores I obtained in various English tests such as TOEFL (633,10/97),GRE general (total 2220, verbal 660, 93%; quantitative 790, 98%; analytical 770, 96%), and GMAT (740, 99%; verbal 40, 92%;quantitative 50, 99%). I am sure that, with such language skills, I can pursue advanced studies in an English-speaking environment.

In recognition of my outstanding academic record, the university has selected me to enter into graduate studies without the usually mandatory admission exams, a privilege given to only a few of the very best students each year. I have, however, decided to turn down the offer. I believe I will be able to learn more on the accounting/finance program by pursuing graduate studies in your university. Your program of graduate research and studies is known to be holding a leading position in the field. Under the guidance of your distinguished faculty and with the benefit of your remarkable research facilities, I am sure I will be able to ground myself solidly in my chosen career. After my Ph. D. studies, I plan to return to Tsinghua, where I shall devote myself to a lifetime of teaching and research.

Yours sincerely,

Dearxx,

I believe that university offers an excellent opportunity to further mylearning in a more challenging environment and to deepen my understanding of theknowledge and skills I already have.

I am keen on all aspects of business, but am particularly interested inaccountancy/finance and management.

Through my current study I have learned to be more computer literate andhow to effectively manage my time. I became interested in accountancy whenstudying the finance unit in business studies and I am now completing an Aslevel in this subject as I felt this would give me a sound footing when startingmy university course

I gained an As level in sociology which has sharpened my ability to analyseinformation in depth, which is vital for management. Sociology has also helpedme appreciate people’s different needs in society, which I see as an importantfeature in business

One responsibility that I held for a year was the role of the middle schoolprefect. This helped me to gain an insight into typical basic managementresponsibilities. In Year 13 I then became a senior prefect and our role withinthe school is to help out with such activities as fund raising and the schoolfate

Taking part in the Young Enterprise scheme taught me many skills; how towork independently and with a team which was one of the keys to our company’ssuccess as “best company.”

I attended a young enterprise presentation day where we were privileged tolisten to guests speaking about becoming an entrepreneur. This brief courseinspired me with a wish to one day own my own business. I feel that anaccountancy/finance and management course will help me to place myself in thesector in which I am most interested and give me the aspiration to eventuallyachieve this

In the sixth form work experience is optional but I believed I would gaingreat benefit from such a placement. I was fortunate to get a two-week placementin Lloyds TSB bank in Nottingham. I was given a great deal of responsibility; mytime was divided into various departments such as the customer servicedepartment, finance department, balancing accounts with the cashiers. As aresult of my success with Lloyds TSB the manager offered me full time employmentwith training should I decide to take that route

I held a part time job for 2 1/2 years in which I worked as a counterassistant in a busy restaurant in my local town. From this I learned many skillssuch as working in a fast busy environment, handling money and a great deal ofcustomer service and teamwork

In my spare time I enjoy socialising with my friends and family. I enjoyreading and one of my favourite authors is Terry Pratchet. I enjoy music and Ilisten to many different styles. I am particularly interested in IT and much ofmy time is spent researching on the web

From my experiences and personal ambition I am confident that I have thenecessary self-motivation and commitment to succeed in accountancy finance andmanagement and I look forward to taking advantage of all the opportunities thatuniversity life has to offer.

Dear _,

The personal data enclosed in this application file will demonstrate my profile as a child prodigy who entered into Jilin University at 16 and joined the country's topmost scientific research institution as a graduate student at 20. Now with an engineering experience of 4 years at the age of 24, I would like to scale still higher intellectual heights by pursuing advanced studies, an education process that I hope will gain me the competitive edge for personal growth and push me to the forefront of scientific progress.

Immersed in the academic atmosphere of an intellectual family, I was encouraged in my early childhood by my parents to read books in a wide range of disciplines. With this privileged background, I attended primary school at 6, at least one year earlier than the normal admission age of 7 or older. I felt so lucky-God blessed me with so many natural gifts. At an early age I showed a natural talent in mathematics and a strong memory, the attributes that enabled me to excel my classmates, especially in such challenging subjects as mathematics, physics and chemistry. I took part in a variety of provincial and national contests, demonstrating my excellent academic skills and wining many prizes.

Blessed with my academic potence, I was able to finish my primary and secondary education in 10 years, two years ahead of the usual twelve years. At 16, I entered a privileged class specially designed for the gifted students at Jilin University, a cradle of scientific and technological talents in China. The class selects only 90 students out of more than 1000 child prodigies across China each year. (Jilin University is a prestigious university of general education with 20 departments and a regular annual enrollment of 1,500 students) I studied at Electrical Engineering (E. E) Department, a highly selective department with a gathering of smart students who are hard to compete with.

Four years of undergraduate studies had me well trained in a wide range of disciplines, and my outstanding academic performance encouraged me to pursue an advanced degree. With a concentration on mathematics, communication and computer, I studied a variety of courses in my undergraduate years, among which were Higher Mathematics, Probability Statistics and Stochastic Process, Theories of Signal and Information, High Frequency Circuits and Principles of Modern Communications Systems, Computer Principle and other courses in the Electronic Technology field. I also studied Western culture, History and Economics in order to build up a good base for my education. With a wish to build a solid foundation for my future research and study, I was fully devoted to my academic training at college. My hard work proved to be successful. My overall GPA of 3.57/4.0 ranked in the top one percent of my class. Upon graduation in 1994, I won easy acceptance into Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications as a graduate student at 20, an age when most Chinese students would be just starting their university education. At this university, I narrowed my academic interest down to the area of mobile communications and digital communications.

My MA education proved to be another period of fruitful and successful academic pursuits. Among the courses I selected were Probability Theory, ISDN & ATM, SPC, Digital Signal Processing, Personal Communications, C++ language. These disciplinary training prepared me to delve deeper in the study of electrical engineering and communications. To keep me informed of the latest developments in my field and to brush up my English language skills, I also read the latest professional journals and periodicals of the telecommunications on a regular basis. Burning the course of my MA program, my outstanding academic records won me various scholarships in seven consecutive years, among which, to name a few, were Excellent Students, Excellent Person, Excellent fellowship.

To garnish this writing with other personal activities other than academic achievements, I need to mention my perfect performance in a dancing contest at Jilin University, which won me the first prize.

Anyway, looking back at my campus life, I feel confident to say that I have fulfilled the education goal to my satisfaction.

Teaching Experience

I worked as a teaching assistant at the Electronics Circuit Group in Personal Communications in my third semester at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. I taught product applications and the telecommunications development in China. I trained the students by theoretical approach and also taught them how to solve real problems by practical means. I found the teaching position so much enjoyable. The daily academic exchanges between the students and myself were beneficial to both parties. I believe that my students enjoyed my teaching too because my classes were well attended.

Starting from April , I worked as a part-time teacher at HP corporation. Later I was also employed by Software Center Motorola, China. I taught Motorola customers the principle of CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and the usage of the HP instruments for testing CDMA Base station and CDMA Handset. Motorola customers were all satisfied with my teaching. I not only grasped advanced knowledge but also, more importantly, learned how to be a good teacher.

Research Experience

In the second year of my graduate studies, I began to work as research assistant of Professor Dacheng Yang, a renowned expert in digital and mobile communication Research and Design Center of Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. After learning the background, application, principle, and advantage of CDMA, I selected the signaling design of the CDMA Base Station Interface as my research topic. I evaluated and studied the protocols IS-95, IS-634 and the ULTRA interface protocols of Lucent. Applying software engineering method and Oriented-Object approach, I designed the internal interface of Base Station System between BSC and BTS-Abis interface, which is one of the most important parts of such a large and sophisticated project. Then referring to protocols LAPD/LAPF, integrating the latest knowledge and using one step. By working on this project, I learned more about CDMA, GSM and other mobile communications systems. Later I felt so proud to hear what I had done was downloaded to the board and the design ran flawlessly.

Working Experience

After I obtained my MA degree in engineering in , I was employed by a telecommunication branch company of Posts & Telecommunications Industry Company. I participated in the JSU18 switching System Project, which is planned to produce the sixth largest switching system in China's own switching systems. I was in charge of the No.7 signaling section and developed the trunk communication system. Referring to protocol Q. 764, etc, I designed the TUP (Telephone User Part) & ISUP (ISDN User Part) - the most important part of a switching system-with C++ Language. By now, I have finished the software flow of CPC (call process) of these two parts. Through programming, downloading the procedure into the real switching system, debugging and testing, I came to deeply understand the call process of the large switching system and the relationship between all the modules of a large switching system. The procedure that I completed is so good that we can call successfully through it.

In working on these two projects, I cultivated diligent work habits, independent research ability and team spirit. I feel I have the potential for further further academic growth and am ready to take up the challenge of advanced studies in my chosen field.

From August 1998, I joined Software center Motorola, China and got involved in the CDMA project. We must communicate with international customers on a frequent basis in English environment. So I not only learned about the excellent software development process and various branches of advanced knowledge, but also improved my English ability. Here, we often exchange our findings at presentations given by others and myself in English. I get a lot of technical and non - technical training, in such subjects as Software Product Process, CDMA ( Code Division Multiple Access), GSM, GPRS ( General Packet Radio Service - the third generation system of GSM), TTCN ( Tree and Tabular Combined Notation - a test language), ITEX ( Interactive TTCN Editor and executor - a test tool for the TTCN language), and even English language.

Purpose of Study

I learn greedily, but the more I am trained, the more deeply I realize what I learned earlier is not enough. I have not got a chance to lead a major project, although I have been moving on a smooth career path and always finished my part of every project immaculately. As a female engineer, I must learn more to compete with most male engineers to lead a major project. And in spite of all my achievements, I feel that I have not brought my intellectual capabilities into full play. So I desire to enter your esteemed university to pursue advanced studies so that I can lay a solid foundation for my future research work. In the meantime, I will be able to improve my English, and I hope that someday I can speak English as well as Chinese.

I believe I have acquired the necessary theoretical framework and practical experience for advanced studies. Equipped with the ability to teach myself and conduct independent research, I will be able to attain competence quickly in areas that I may at first know very little about. I never work just to finish an assignment, but instead I always try conscientiously to learn as much as possible and sharpen my expertise through the work I do. Keeping this work style, I have become highly skilled in such fields as switching system's trunking system (communications and software), Code Division Multiple Access system (mobile communications and software), SDT & TTCN (CASE and test tools), and pSOS+ system (real-time operation system). These achievements would be a great help in my pursuit of advanced education, especially when I can work under the seasoned guidance of your strong faculty. My previous experience will qualify me for the TA and RA positions of your university as well.

I would like to apply to do graduate studies in the United States where the research and education in global telecommunications are leading the world. I have long admired your esteemed university known for its demanding work ethics and nurturing academic atmosphere. I am confident that I can receive a high quality education on your PhD program. If I am accepted, I am also confident that I can make quick progress in the E. E field, especially in the areas of wireless communication, communication, digital signal processing, the disciplines that share many common characteristics and important principles. Given the broad applications of these technologies, I believe the progress we make in these areas will help shape the future of the mankind. I would like to be at the forefront of such progress. As I am well trained and broadly experienced in EE and computer science, you may find me more than qualified for advanced studies in areas other than those I have mentioned. If so, I would be grateful to your appreciation and would like to hear any advice that you may have for me. Upon completion of the program, I will return to my homeland and strive to make scientific contributions that both your university and I can be proud of.

Yours sincerely,

每年学费8000新西兰元到16000新西兰元之间;工程学课程每年学费大约在10000到20000新西兰元之间;

Dear _,

When I was young, my friends always wanted to come round to my house after school because my mum would let us paint. We had a big easel, a large supply of powder paints, felt tip pens and pencil crayons. I was given the freedom to express myself through these means from a very young age and I still find art the best way to express myself now.

At A-level my photography developed to a high standard and I was offered a place to do fashion photography at the London College of the Arts. However I decided not to accept, as I did not wish to commit to photography alone. I decided to take a place at Doncaster College doing a performing arts national diploma. I was a committed and able student fully engaging with all aspects of the course and thoroughly enjoying it also. However as the course was so time consuming I had little time to continue painting and drawing and I missed it terribly.

In September 2007 just as I was about to start my second year one of my best friends committed suicide. I became depressed and felt unable to continue attending. Throughout the following year I used art as a way to express my emotions. It helped me come to terms with what had happened much more than anything else did. Although I had been offered a place to continue my Performing Arts National Diploma the following year I decided to apply for a foundation art and design course.

Doing an art foundation course has given me the freedom and facilities to begin pursuing what I really enjoy. As a student and an artist I become totally absorbed in the piece of work or project I am involved in. I am dedicated and enthusiastic about all of the arts, which I have explored and am eager to continue my studies and better myself not only as an artist but also as a person.

There have been many artists who have inspired me in my own creative path. These include Guy Bourdin, Tracey Emin, and Joesph Cornell, as well as many others. Viewing other artists work helps me to better understand Art itself, as well as helping me to discover which pathway would be best for me. I enjoy regularly attending exhibitions of my favourite artists and also of artists I have not previously known.

Installation art is something I would like to explore further as I progress. I love the idea of being given a space to make my own.

Seeing other friends go off to University in previous years has been strange but I am glad I have waited until this time to apply as I have gained maturity and take a more serious attitude towards my work. I am willing to put more time and effort in because of this.

After completing my degree I would like to pursue a career in art therapy. I feel art gave me a way to express what I was feeling when I could not truly understand it myself. It gave me a release and I would like to help other people to be able to use art in the same way.

Yours sincerely,
