soon as Psyche looked at Cupid, Cupid punished her by leaving her.
Their lovely castle and gardens vanished too. Psyche found herself alone
in an open field with no signs of other beings or Cupid. As she
wandered trying to find her love, she came upon the temple of Venus.
Wishing to destroy her, the goddess of love gave Psyche a series of
tasks, each harder and more dangerous then the last.

For her last task Psyche was given a little box and told to take it
to the underworld. She was told to get some of the beauty of Proserpine,
the wife of Pluto, and put it in the box. During her trip she was given
tips on
avoiding the dangers of the realm of the dead. She was also warned
not to open the box. But Temptation overcame Psyche and she opened the
box. But instead of finding beauty, she found deadly slumber.
Cupid found her lifeless on the ground. He gathered the deadly sleep
from her body and put it back in the box. Cupid forgave her, as did
Venus. The gods, moved by Psyche's love for Cupid made her a goddess.
Today, Cupid and his arrows have become the most popular of love
signs, and love is most frequently depicted by two hearts pierced by an
arrow, Cupid's arrow.

There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentines Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries.
Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailers daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine”.
Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.
Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball.
In the United States, Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial valentines were introduced in the 1800s and now the date is very commercialised.
The town of Loveland, Colorado, does a large post office business around February 14. The spirit of good continues as valentines are sent out with sentimental verses and children exchange valentine cards at school.

St. Valentine's Day is an informal observance of a lover's holiday. Today, the observance has no connection with the many legendary St. Valentines, and holds no religious significance.
The day is observed with exchanges of love notes and cards, and other tokens of affection, called valentines. The symbols of the heart and Cupid are common in cards, decorations of store windows, candies and other paraphernalia.
Traditional valentines were frillysweet, and tender affairs made of red and white paper and lace with cutoutsand cupids. The custom of sending cards, giving candy, and other such tokens has caught a great deal of commercial enthusiasm.

据传说,在行刑的那一天早晨,瓦沦丁给典狱长的女儿写了一封情意绵绵的告别信,落款是:FromyourValentine(寄自你的瓦沦丁)

St Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14 of each year, the reason why it is celebrated on this day is because this was the day that the Patron Saint of Lovers “St Valentine” was supposedly executed on.
On this day lovers all around the world mark this occasion as a day for sending poems, cards, flowers or candy, etc. They might also be a social gathering or ball to mark the occasion.
Many Valentine's Day customs involved ways that single women could learn who their future husbands would be. Sometimes they buy kits that include everything needed to make valentines. Many children send their largest, fanciest cards to their parents and teachers.

Valentine’s Day
Good morning everyone, it’s my honor to stand here to make a speech. And I want to introduce something about Valentine’s Day to you.
It is known to us all, Valentine’s Day is on February 14th and it is a traditional festival in west, but now it is popular with all of us. As far as I know, most of you would like to celebrate the festival, but I want to tell you something in detail about it.
First of all, let me tell you the origin of the festival. In fact, there are many legends about the origination of the Valentine’s Day. For the time is limited, I choose only one of them to tell you in brief. In Britain, birds tend to show their love to their lovers on 14th in February. As the result, people consider the day as the young life’s beginning and the day about love. Therefore, people try to imitate the behavior of the birds. That is the reason why the day is called Valentine’s Day.
What’s more, there is something which has to do with the Valentine’s Day. That is rose.
Firstly, roses are good presents on Valentine’s Day. And different colors of the roses stand for different meanings. Pink roses mean that the person you send the present to be you first love. Red roses mean that you love the one you send present to be the one you love now. Orange roses mean that you say” You are beautiful.” to your lover. And the white roses mean you respect your lover. Secondly, the number of the roses you
decide to send to your lover has different meaning. One rose means “Only you”; two roses mean “There are only two of us in the world.” There roses mean “I love you.” 99 roses mean “Forever”. 100 roses mean “100% love”. And 108 roses mean “Would you marry me?”
In addition, people from different counties may do different things on this day.
In America, people always like to post cards to their lovers. And even some young people may post a piece of message on the newspaper to show his or her love to the one he or she loves.
In England, people tend to celebrate the day with a big romantic dinner. And during the dinner they will send roses to their love.
In Australia, people often send purple shell to their lovers for that they believe it stand for loyal and steadfast.
Nowadays in China, there are more and more people celebrating the festival. Just like people in western counties, we also send roses or chocolates to our lovers. Maybe there will also be a date and a big meal.
Finally, if you are a single noble, try to catch your happiness as soon as possible. And if you already have a soul partner, wish you be together forever. Thank you.
Many stores, for instance, decorateseasonally, or a according to calendar holidays. Valentine's Day is the first excuse for splashy valentine theme dominates stationery stores, candy stores, confectioneries, and quite often drug stores where cards and candy are sold.

1.A greeting card sent to arrive on Saint Valentine's Day (Feb. 14) declaring one's love for someone, but usually without giving the name of the sender
2. The person to whom a Valentine is sent
valentine [lentain]
Several stories are told about the origin of Saint Valentine's Day. One legend dates as far as the days of the Roman Empire. According to the story, Claudius, the Emperor of Rome, wanted to increase the size of his army. He knew that it would be easier to get young men who were not married to join. Therefore he made a rule that no young man could marry until he had served a certain number of years in the army.
A priest named Valentine broke the rule and secretly married a great many young people. Finally, Claudius found out about Valentine and put the priest in prison, where he remained until his death on Feb.14.
After his death, Valentine was made a saint, and the day of his death was named Saint Valentine's Day. It became the custom for lovers to send each other messages on this day. Now Saint Valentine's Day is a time for people to send one another greetings of many kinds.
February 14, Valentine's Day, is sweet hearts' day, on which people in love with each other express their tender emotions. People sometimes put their love messages in a heart-shaped box of chocalates, or a bunch of flowers tied with red ribbons. Words or letters may be written on the flower-covered cards, or something else. Whatever the form may be, the message is almost the same:“Will you be my valentine?”
Another story has it that while Valentine was in prison waiting for his fate, he came in contact with his jailor, Asterius. The jailor had a blind daughter. Asterius requested him to heal his daughter. Through his faith he miraculously restored the sight of Asterius' daughter and fell in love with her. Just before he was put to death, he asked for a pen and paper from his jailor, and signed a farewell message to her “From Your Valentine”, a phrase that lived ever after.
Another valentine gentleman you may be wondering about is Cupid (Latin,“desire”). In Roman mythology Cupid is the son of Venus, goddess of love. His counterpart in Greek mythology is Eros, god of love. Cupid is often said to be a mischievous boy who goes around wounding both gods and humans with his arrows, causing them to fall in love.
It is an old English custom to send a message or card to the person you love on St. Valentine's Day. Here are some samples:

One day, I woke early in the morning to watch the sunrise.
Ah the beauty of God's creation is beyond description.
As I watched, I praised God for His beautiful work.
As I sat there, I felt the Lord's presence with me.
He asked me, “Do you love me?” I answered, “Of course, God!
You are my Lord and Savior!”
Then He asked, “If you were physically handicapped, would you still love me?”
I was perplexed. I looked down upon my arms, legs and the rest of my body and wondered how many things I wouldn't; be able to do, the things that I took for granted. And I answered, “It would be tough Lord, but I would still love You.”
Then the Lord said, “If you were blind, would you still love my creation?”
How could I love something without being able to see it? Then I thought of all the blind people in the world and how many of them still loved God and His creation. So I answered, “It's hard to think of it, but I would still love you.”
The Lord then asked me, “If you were deaf, would you still listen to my word?”
How could I listen to anything being deaf? Then I understood. Listening to God's Word is not merely using our ears, but our hearts. I answered, “It would be tough, but I would still listen to Your word.” The Lord then asked,
“If you were mute, would you still praise My Name?” How could I praise without a voice?
Then it occurred to me: God wants us to sing from our very heart and soul.
It never matters what we sound like. And praising God is not always with a song, but when we are persecuted, we give God praise with our words of thanks. So I answered, “Though I could not physically sing, I would still praise Your Name.”
And the Lord asked, “Do you really love Me?” With courage and a strong conviction, I answered boldly, “Yes Lord! I love You ause You are the one and true God!” I thought I had answered well, but...
God asked,
“THEN WHY DO YOU SIN?”
I answered, “ause I am only human. I am not perfect.”
“THEN WHY IN TIMES OF PEACE DO YOU STRAY THE FURTHEST?
WHY ONLY IN TIMES OF TROUBLE DO YOU PRAY THE EARNEST?”
No answers. Only tears.
The Lord continued: “Why only sing at fellowships and retreats? Why seek Me only in times of worship?
Why ask things so selfishly? Why ask things so unfaithfully?”
The tears continued to roll down my cheeks.
“Why are you ashamed of Me? Why are you not spreading the good news? Why in times of persecution, you cry to others when offer My shoulder to cry on? Why make excuses when I give you opportunities to serve in My Name?”
I tried to answer, but there was no answer to give.
“You are blessed with life. I made you not to throw this gift away. I have blessed you with talents to serve Me, but you continue to turn away. I have revealed My Word to you, but you do not gain in knowledge.
I have spoken to you but your ears were closed. I have shown My blessings to you, but your eyes were turned away. I have sent you servants, but you sat idly by as they were pushed away. I have heard your prayers and I have answered them all.”
“DO YOU TRULY LOVE ME?”
I could not answer. How could I? I was embarrassed beyond belief.
I had no excuse. What could I say to this? When my heart had cried out and the tears had flowed, I said, “Please forgive me Lord. I am unworthy to be Your child.” The Lord answered, “That is My Grace, My Child.” I asked, “Then why do you continue to forgive me? Why do You love me so?”
The Lord answered, “ ause you are My Creation. You are my Child. I will never abandon you.
When you cry, I will have compassion and cry ! with you.
When you shout with joy, I will laugh with you! When you are down, I will encourage you.
When you fall, I will raise you up. When you are tired, I will carry you. I will be with you till the end of days, and I will love you forever.”
Never had I cried so hard before. How could I have been so cold?
How could I have hurt God as I had done? I asked God, “How much do You love me?”
The Lord stretched out His arms, and I saw His nail-pierced hands. I bowed down at the feet of Christ, my Savior. And for the first time, I truly prayed.
There are varying opinions as to
the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts state that it originated from St.
Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity.
died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love
lotteries.
Legend also says that St. Valentine
signed it From Your Valentine .
Other aspects of the story say that
Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor
Claudius.
Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope

Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine”.
