It warmed my heart today to walk into the Thirsty Camel downtown in the Thanksgiving Day, for a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip. Ihan, a food shop owner, said that he was refusing to take money today because it was Buy Nothing Day. To increase awareness(意识) of the strange’s over-spending nature of our society, Ilan suggested a trade for food today. He simply asked that you offer something of equal personal value for the meal you received.

At first I was really uncomfortable, wondering if it would be fair to exchange a yet to be determined “I Owe You” (IOU) for food What could I give him of equal value After all, his food is the best in the town!

We ended up writing our IOU’s with promises of a book, some paintings and the offer of work in a variety of ways if he needs it.

I think the idea isn’t that the trade is “equal” so much as the importance of the kind of transaction. We put thought into our offer and we had an even greater understanding for the meals we ate.

We don’t buy a lot, especially at this upcoming time of year. We don’t give gifts at all in fact. The holiday time is spent enjoying each other’s company and doing things together with family and friends. This is what seems most sensible.

Ilan is a good person. We are all lucky to have someone like this in our community.

1.Ilan did not take any money that day in order to .

A. have a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip

B. trade for something of equal value in return

C. make people aware of their over spending

D. buy nothing that day to save some money

2.For the meal, the author finally offered Ilan .

A. some promises B. a book

C. some paintings D. work in different ways

3.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “transaction”

A. transport B. trade

C. meal D. giving

4.What is the author’s attitude to Buy Nothing Day

A. Disagreeable B. Meaningless.

C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.

Each year there is an increasing number of cars on roads and streets as millions of new cars and trucks are produced. One out of every six Americans works at putting together the parts of cars, driving trucks, building roads or filling cars and trucks with gas. Americans won’t live without cars!

Most Americans would find it hard to think what life would look like without cars. However, some have realized the serious problems of the air pollution that is caused by the car.

The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health.

One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute. That’s what several of the large car factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.

Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else. Inventors are now working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.

To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle. Bicycling is thought to help keep the air clean.

But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.

Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.

1.How many ways to get rid of air pollution are suggested in this article by the writer

A. Four. B. Three.

C. Two. D. One.

2.If the number of cars is cut down, the most serious problem to American workers is_______.

A. to have no work to do B. to keep the air clean

C. to get a better life D. to go to work by bike

3.What is the conclusion(结论) of the writer

A. Bicycling is the only way out.

B. The number of cars must be cut down.

C. Cars bring us nothing but serious problems.

D. Cars bring us not only a better life but serious problems.

4.To reduce pollution, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live, EXCEPT that ______.

A. Americans have to cut down on the number of their total cars.

B. People are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle.

C. The number of cars on the roads should be limited every day.

D. People should build more roads and fill cars and trucks with gas.

One advantage of the Internet is shopping conveniently online for clothes; one disadvantage of the Internet is also shopping conveniently online for clothes.

“Nothing fits,” said Lam Yuk Wong, a senior in electrical and computer engineering at Rice University.“Everyone says this. They order clothes and they don’t fit.People get very unhappy.”

Wong and her design partner, Xuaner “Cecilia” Zhang, are Team White Mirror, creators of what they call a “virtual (虚拟) fitting room”.Their goal is simple and consumer-friendly: to let online clothing shoppers have a perfect fit and a perfect look when shopping every time.

Both women are from China, Wong from Hong Kong and Zhang from Beijing. They both order most of their clothing online. They got the idea from their own experience as consumers and from listening to the complaints of friends and relatives.“They say, ‘The color is wrong’ or ‘I got the right size but it still does not fit.’ We want to make it like you’re in the store trying on the clothes,” Zhang said.

Using a Kinect developed by Microsoft for use with its Xbox 360 video game player,

Zhang scans Wong and turns her image into, in effect, a virtual model, keeping Wong’s dimensions (尺寸), and even her skin and hair color.“We put the clothes on the shopper’s 3-D body models and show how they look when they are dressed,” Wong said.So far, Wong and Zhang have adapted the software to show dresses and shirts, and they are now working on shorts.

Asked if she thought men as well as women might be interested in using their virtual fitting room, Wong said, “I think their wives will care about this, so it will also be important to men.”

Reader: For six years, I’ve run an office that has two employees: me and my boss.He used to be so appreciative that I didn’t mind doing a little extra, but about two months ago, he started being rude and demanding. Now he even yells when I don’t have time to bring his favorite wine to his home after work.

This change started when we met a wealthy new customer, who is a huge jerk (古怪的人) ― my boss’s new behavior is just like his.

My boss is a good man; he and his family have treated me like a little sister. Is there a good way to discuss this with him

Karla: Sounds like your new customer has set a bad example to your boss. You need to remind your boss that you’re in his corner― but you’re not his slave. My suggestions are as follows.

Start with a simple question in a calm moment: “Is everything okay ”

State the truth: “Until recently, I’ve felt like a valued teammate. But our relationship has become tense.Your expectations of me seem to have changed.Although I used to do occasional personal businesses for you as a favor, now it seems expected.”

Draw your lines: “If you think my job description needs to change or my performance is not good enough, let’s discuss that.Otherwise, I need you to stop yelling at me and to respect my personal time.”

Ideally, you’ll get an apology and a promise to do better. After that, it’s a matter of reinforcement (加强) .If he starts yelling, look at him with a calm expression. After he cools down, restate his request and add, “Is that correct ” For the unreasonable request, such as fetching his favorite wine after work: “I’m afraid I can’t take care of that for you.” If he keeps acting like a jerk, there are bosses out there who will better respect your time and talent.

Nearly 19 percent of teachers of color(有色人种教师) left their jobs after the 20xx- school year. Some left for personal reasons like taking care of their families. But 50 percent said they left because they were dissatisfied with their employment situation, such as poor working conditions, student discipline problems and large class sizes. Thus, taking immediate measures to improve it is our top priority.

For years, researchers have proved the benefits of increasing the share of minority teachers in schools, especially as our public school system has turned to one that is made up mostly of minority students.Teachers of color, who are more likely than their white counterparts to choose to work in racially diverse( 多 种 多 样 的 ) schools, offer particular benefits to their students.Graduation rates increase among minority students when they are taught by racially similar educators, research shows. They can also serve as positive role models, and their presence reduces the chance of racial discrimination at school.

The Shanker Institute report suggests that the rate of minority teacher hiring is not the whole problem. The problem is what happens after these teachers enter the classroom. These teachers often work in high-poverty rural schools. They are more likely to have less-desirable working conditions.

Diversity is a key component to equality and opportunity.Where there’s a diverse teaching workforce, all kids thrive. So solutions must be found at once to turn this trend around.Firstly, schools should develop mentorship programs that support minority teachers once they are in the classroom.Secondly, more money should be spent in improving working conditions in these schools.Of course, school headmasters should also be evaluated on their ability to retain teachers of color.

1.Among teachers of color leaving their jobs, half of them quit because .

A.they had to move to other places

B.they had to take care of their children

C.they eventually found better-paid jobs

D.their employment situation was unsatisfactory

2.Which of the following is the main idea of the second paragraph

A.The benefits of increasing the share of minority teachers in schools.

B.The reasons for teachers of color leaving their jobs in many schools.

C.The ways to decrease the possibility of racial discrimination at school.

D.The solutions to increasing graduation rates among minority students.

3.Which of the following components is vital to equality and opportunity

A.Honesty B.Variety

C.Ability D.Safety

4.How did the author feel when writing the passage

A.He felt angry about the government.

B.He felt it urgent to solve the problem.

C.He was satisfied with the present situation.

D.He didn’t care about diverse teaching workforce.

If you want to get the most out of the study of a language, you must also read for pleasure: novels, plays, travel books, and so on. And in reading books of this kind the important thing is to get on with reading; to try to grasp what the writer is going to tell you in the book as a whole. This is impossible if you stop and think over the meaning of every single word which happens to be unfamiliar. You can not enjoy a story if you stop half a dozen times on every page in order to look up words in the dictionary. You may even prevent yourself from understanding the story as a whole by doing this.

When you are reading books of this kind, therefore, you will usually have to rely mainly on the context to help you. If you meet an unfamiliar word, do not let it take too much of your attention from the main thread(主线) of the story. In all probability you will meet the same word again a few pages later on in a slightly different context, and each time you see it that your understanding of it will become more exact.

When many people in the west think of China, the animal that they think of is the dragon. For them, the dragon is an aggressive monster that breathes fire. Many popular legends tell how dragons have killed brave knights and eaten beautiful young girls.

For Chinese people, however, the dragon is not an evil monster. It’s a cultural and spiritual symbol for prosperity and good luck. The dragon’s main task is to create harmony and bring rain. Dragons are celebrated in art and architecture, and of course the dragon dance is a very popular ritual (仪式).

China isn’t the only country to have the dragon as its symbol. Wales in the UK, has a red dragon proudly displayed on its flag. Another country in the world with a dragon on its flag is Bhutan, a tiny country between China and India.

Almost all countries in the world have an animal symbol representing their countries. This is particularly obvious during sports. The English think lions to be brave and proud animal and the English football teams have three lions on their football shirts.

Australia is famous for kangaroos, of course. The national rugby team is more commonly known as the Wallabies, a type of small kangaroo. The South African team is known as the Springboks, a type of African antelope. Likewise the New Zealanders, whether playing sports or not, are commonly known as kiwis. A kiwi is a native New Zealand bird that can’t fly.

All countries are proud of their symbols, which they feel reflect national characteristics or the beauty and variety of their natural environments. Recently, a Shanghai professor claimed that using the dragon as a national symbol could make western countries have a negative view of China. But in an Internet survey 90% of Chinese people wanted to keep the dragon.

33. In the opinion of the west, the dragon is ______.

A. a terrible animal that is not popular

B. a cultural and spiritual symbol of good luck

C. a reflection of China’s national characteristics

D. an animal that can create harmony and bring rain

34. Which of the following does NOT use the dragon as its national symbol?

A. China. B. Wales. C. Bhutan. D. India.

35. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. The national rugby team from the South Africa is well known as the Wallabies.

B. The Australian team is known as Springboks, a type of kangaroo.

C. The New Zealanders are commonly known as kiwis only when playing sports.

D. The dragon is mentioned to have been used on the flag in two countries.

I love my mother because my mother broke my heart for me.

I remember that that night, my mother was so tired in the class that she went home and was busy with the housework. I knew my mother had a sore stomach that day and washed my dirty laundry. Looking at my mother's busy waist-back pain, but still sticking to it. I see pain in my eyes. But I can't help my mother because my homework hasn't been finished yet.

My mother went to work and did the housework. I wrote my homework every night. Sometimes the words won't be written, the text can't be memorized, my mother taught me over and over again and again and again. The wrong word, the wrong word, my mother will ask me to back, rewrite. Sometimes my mother was very worried and angry. But I know my mother is good for me. I think that's a tough love.

My mother gave me an English cram school, and my mother would go to class with me whenever I was free. My mother mainly wants to understand my performance in class, know my progress of study, go home to help me, mother's heart is so bitter!

I thank my mother and my mother for my love!
