Early to read the book.The content inside very attract me,but I still feel that the book has some ugly.Because it involves too much hate.You can,I still feel the beauty of this.Although I this is found after to savor.The book,the book is very attract me.Its beauty is Hess Clive is that for love,that is embodied in Katherine vickers vimy love life misfortune with Katherine

Hess Clive though when revenge is so fierce,but he is also because of love.Because he didn't finish listen to the half.He broke his think lover,he won't be so sad.

Even so, WUTHERING HEIGHTS continues to divide readers. It is not a pretty love story; rather, it is swirling tale of largely unlikeable people caught up in obsessive love that turns to dark madness. And yet--it possesses a grandeur of language and design, a sense of tremendous pity and great loss that sets it apart from virtually every other novel written.

My Feelings after reading Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights is a well-written tragedy of love. After reading the whole story, I would like to talk about the main characters of the story—Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff love each other very much, but they do not have the right attitude towards love, which leads to the tragedy.

In Catherine’s life, she made a very foolish decision---marrying to Edgar. In fact, her love for Edgar can never be compared to that for Heathcliff. She did so, because she thought the wealth of Edgar would be useful to Heathcliff. But in reality, it did not work. She did not have a good understanding of love, which is something pure and saint. If anyone add any purpose into love, love itself lost its meaning. Catherine’s wrong decision hurt two people who love her, and even destroyed the happiness of their offspring.

Heathcliff is a man full of retaliation. He loved Catherine very much, but what he did, on the contrary, added to the misery of Catherine. In my opinion, if he really loved Catherine, he should not walk into Catherine’s life again after his disappearance. Further more, after the death of Catherine, what Heathcliff did brought agony to Catherine’s daughter, as well as his own son.

After reading, I have a better understanding of love. If you love really someone, his or her happiness is the thing that most matters.

However it became famous at last, though I don’t know why; I just came across with the book in the bookstore and somehow bought and shelved it on the top of my bookshelf until the book review homework came to me. Consequently the book didn’t give me a splendid fist impression, at least not better than Jane Iyre, which is always talked about and complimented among girls. However, after reading the book, the “never judge a book from its cover”theory was deeply rooted in my heart. The meaning of“cover ”here is not only limited to the coated paper that protects the book and attracts readers, but also the public comments on the book. I seldom hear of comments on Wuthering Heights, so I thought matter-of-factly that the book would be a boring stuff; however I was totally wrong.

Wuthering Heights demonstrates us a life profile in a deformed society, the distorted humanity in this society and various dreading events resulted from it, by the hand of a tragic love story. Actually the whole plot of the story can be divided into four parts which develops gradually: The first part narrates the childhood of Catherine and Heathcliff who lived together all the time, the special feeling in the special environment between an orphan and a miss, and the revolt against the tyranny of Hindley Earnshaw. The second part focuses on Catherine betrayed Heathcliff, married Linton Edgar and became the hostess of Thrushcross Grange. In the third part, the author uses a lot of time emphasizing on how did desperate Heathcliff turn the hostility in his chest into the practical plan and action to revenge. Although there’s nothing else important except the death of Heathcliff in the last part, the revival of humanity of Heathcliff after he saw the love between young Catherine and Hareton was prominently demonstrated, which make readers feel warm and relieved after the breathtaking desperation at last. The love, hatred, revenge and humanity recovery, hence, is the essence as well as an uniting thread of the whole novel.

Emily condensed her painstaking efforts on the image portrayal of Heathcliff, to whom she placed all of her indignation, sympathy and ideal. The orphan who was exploited of all the warmth he deserved cultivated strong emotion of love and hostility in his life; the mistreatment of Hindley taught him about the cruelty of the life, as well as yielding to his miserable fate silently. In my opinion, his death was the last expression of his love for Catherine--at least they were together after they died. What’s more, he abandoned his plan to mistreat the next generation before his death, which showed his good nature distorted by the cruel reality. The revival of humanity illustrates Emily’s noble humanitarian ideals.

Wuthering Heights has been regarded as “the most peculiar novel” on the English literature history due to the subversion of the sentimentalism style which was popular at that time, replacing pale melancholy with strong love and violent hatred and the ruthless revenge occured from them. Different from his sister who created a world for everyone, she created a world for herself. There was a classic remark on her character by Virginia Woolf: “Emily was inspired by some more general conception. Between Love and hatred -----on Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Wuthering Heights told the story happened between two old families, the Earnshawn family living in Wuthering Heights and the Linton family living in Thrushcross Grange. The story began when old Mr. Earnshawn one day took home an orphan who he adopted on his way to Liverpool. He named the boy Heathcliff. From the very beginning, Mr. Earnshawn’s son Hindley hated Heathcliff for he shared Mr. Earnshawn’s love. Hindley often beat Heathcliff. Though Heathcliff never complained, quiet anger grew inside. On the contrary, Mr. Earnshawn’s daughter Catherine became Heathcliff’s close friend soon after his arrival. They played together and grew up together. As time went by, their affection towards each other became increasingly deep. Years later, Old Mr. Earnshawn passed away.

Hindley became the head of the family. He began to abuse Heathcliff, treated him as a servant and forbade Catherine from being together with him. Heathcliff sliently tolerated all these insults, but inside his heart anger turned into extreme hatred, which made his character more twisted. Then, an accident happened. One evening, Catherine and Heathcliff slinked into Thrushcross Grange to have fun. Unfortunately, they were discovered and Catherine was bitten by a dog. The master of Thrushcross Grange Mr. Linton drove away Heathcliff and kept Catherine to recover from the wound for 5 weeks. During her stay at Thrushcross Grange, Catherine became friends with Mr. Linton’s son Edgar and daughter Isabella. The brother and sister not only took good care of Catherine but also taught her good manners which changed her from a vulgar girl into a graceful lady.

However, at the same time Catherine’s affection towards Heathcliff also underwent a subtle change. Although she knew she still loved Heathcliff very much, she came to feel it a shame to marry him, a servant. When Edgar, a handsome wealthy kind but sheepish young man proposed to her, she betrayed her true feelings and accepted the proposal. Hearing the news of Catherine’s engagement by chance, Heathcliff left angrily and sadly. Three years later, Catherine married Edgar and led a peaceful and happy life.

But the happiness ended when Heathcliff suddenly came back. He had made his fortune and acted like a gentleman. Catherine was quite delighted and wanted her husband and Heathcliff to be friends, but Heathcliff came back only to take revenge for the happiness and love he lost. Heathcliff gambled with Hindley who had been lost in alcohol after his wife’s death and tricked him out of money. In this way Heathcliff became the master of Wuthering Heights. Besides, when Heathcliff found Edgar’s sister Isabella was foolishly admiring his appearance and wealth, he deceived the poor girl and persuaded her to run away with him. Angry with a fight between Edgar and Heathcliff, Catherine went on a hunger strike and became ill. At that time she was already pregnant. Although Edgar looked after her extremely carefully, Catherine’s health condition just went from bad to worse. Finally, after she gave birth to a baby girl who was also named Catherine, she died in Heathcliff’s arms, wearing a smile.

During the following 16 years, Hindley, Isabella and Edgar died in succession. Nevertheless, although he was for long soaked in the misery of losing Catherine, Heathcliff’s hatred did not fade. He turned to take revenge on the next generation. He taught Hindley’s son Hareton to be rude. At that time he would be able to do whatever he wanted and took revenge on anybody. But when the time came, he suddenly realized that revenge didn’t make him happier but more miserable. He lost the interest of destroying the next generation and approved of little Catherine remarrying Hareton. The two later lived a happy life together. In the end, on a cold and rainy night, Heathcliff ended his own life tragically.

But it was said that after his death, people often saw two spirits haunting near Wuthering Heights. And the two spirits looked just like Heathcliff and Catherine. From my point of view, the theme of Wuthering Heights is stormy love and hatred, just as the book title suggests. It is beyond doubt displayed most thoroughly by the hero Heathcliff. On the one hand, He loved Catherine so much that she was the whole world to him. Losing Catherine equaled losing everything. He couldn’t free himself from misery for even a single minute after Catherine’s death. On the other hand, he hated Hindley and Edgar so much that seeing them suffering was not enough. He even felt like torturing the next generation. Another character with strong love and hatred was Hindley. Heathcliff once remarked that Hindley’s wife was the only person who loved Hindley. Apparently Hindley thought so and returned all his love to his wife. Thus, when his wife died in childbirth, he had nobody to love but everybody to hate, including himself.

Unlike Heathcliff who expressed his hatred by taking revenge on others, Hindley poured the hatred on himself by indulging in alcohol. He even didn’t bother to continue hating Heathcliff and destroying him, he chose to bring himself to distruction. Both Heathcliff and Hindley were eventually devoured by their own strong love and hatred. As far as I am concerned, I do not appreciate the stormy love and hatred. The one I appreciate is Edgar, the man who also had deep love but expressed it like running stream. His love for Catherine was not necessarily less than Heathcliff’s and he was more sensible. He loved Catherine so he proposed to her, took good care of her, had a great fear of upsetting her and suffered greatly seeing his dear wife troubled. His love was like the gentle breeze that makes people feel comfortable and never smothered. Though he met the similar fate as Hindley, he never abandoned himself. He gave his love to their daughter, while never forgetting Catherine. Of course, Edgar also had hatred.

He had a thousand reasons to hate Heathcliff, the person who got the true love of his wife, who deceived his naive sister, who indirectly led to his wife’s death. However, Edgar vented his hatred not even once. He did as he said: punishment of the wicked belongs to God, we should learn to forgive. We all have love and hatred in our heart, more or less, weak or strong. However, we should never turn them into devastating storm which will not only hurt others but ourselves. We may find the best way out by learning from Edgar to properly love, to forget hatred and to forgive.

Many people in the world are trying to find a perfect companion.Some of these may marry and not know what their new husband or wife is like.This kind of situation often leads to separation or hostility. Other situations may develop between two friends that stem from jealousy, desire for revenge, uncaring parents, etc. Emily Bront's Wuthering Heights displays several characteristics of destructive relationships. Three of these are uncaring parents, marriage without knowing the person, and jealousy.

Uncaring or unsympathizing parents are shown throughout this story to be an element of destructive relationships. Because Heathcliff gained all the attention from Mr. Earnshaw, Hindley became disassociated from his father. This separation continued until after Mr. Earnshaw had died.Another example is between Hindley and Hareton. Hindley became such a drunk and a gambler that he could not properly care for young Hareton. This led to a separation between Hareton and his father as well. One primary example of an uncaring parent is shown between Heathcliff and his son Linton.Heathcliff did not even want his son for anything except enacting a part of his revenge. This is shown by Linton's fear of Heathcliff and Heathcliff's enmity toward his son. Linton even says “... my father threatened me, and I dread him - I dread him!”(244) to express his feeling about Heathcliff.The hostility and separation between father and son in this book shows that uncaring parents can cause serious damage in relationships with their children.

This element of destructive behavior may stem from an unhappy marriage in which the husbands or wives don't know each other. This had happened between Isabella and Heathcliff. Isabella did not really know Heathcliff when she married him, but after she had married him she saw that Heathcliff was not a gentleman at all. To declare her feelings she wrote “Is Heathcliff a man? If so, is he mad? And if not, is he a devil? I shan't tell my reasons for making this inquiry; but I beseech you to explain, if you can, what I have married ...”(125). Another example of this is when Catherine married Edgar Linton. Although she had been happy at the beginning of the marriage, she thought having parties all the time was going to be fun. Yet, after a while, she became bored. She also realized that she loved Heathcliff more than Edgar and would always love Heathcliff.This enlightenment created separation between Edgar and Catherine during the final hours of Cathy's life. An additional marriage which was made that was doomed was the one between Catherine and Linton. Because this was a forced marriage, Cathy had not yet learned all she could about Linton.Because she did not know until after the marriage that Linton was selfish and inconsiderate, she became distressed and grew isolated in the house.These three failed marriages described in this novel show that knowing the person you will marry is very important.While these marriages took place, jealousy also took a hold in some relationships. One example of this is when Mr. Earnshaw starts to favor Heathcliff over his own son, Hindley. Because of this, Hindley becomes jealous of young Heathcliff and sets out to make Heathcliff's life a nightmare. Hindley's jealousy becomes evident when he says ,“... be damned you beggarly interloper! and wheedle my father out of all he has; only afterwards show him what you are, imp of Satan.”(35). Jealousy was also found very notably in the relationship between Heathcliff and Edgar Linton.

The jealousy between them is expressed when Heathcliff and Edgar start a hostile conversation after Cathy's homecoming at Christmas near the beginning of the book. As the story progresses these two become bitter enemies who will not speak to one another. Another relationship which jealousy ruined is the one between Hareton and Linton. These two become jealous of each other over Cathy's affections. This relationship ends as Hareton and Linton hating each other. These relationships show that jealousy can ruin a relationship very quickly.

The jealousy, neglect, and unprepared nature of the many relationships in this book indicates that many of the relationships in this book have gone “sour”. In spite of all these destructive elements one relationship may succeed. This is the one between Cathy and Hareton.

The book is structured around two parallel love stories, the first half of the novel centering on the love between Catherine and Heathcliff, while the less dramatic second half features the developing love between young Catherine and Hareton. In contrast to the first, the latter tale ends happily, restoring peace and order to Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. In the story, the two houses, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, represent opposing worlds and values.

After reading Wuthering Heights, the love and the hatred between Catherine and Heathcliff still linger in my head. Wuthering Heights gives me a cold, withering, and lonely feeling;however,at the end the book the author shows us that the human kindness is not diminished at Wuthering heights, even though the wind can break off a tree that doesn’t mean it can break off the whole forest. Even though hatred destroyed Heathcliff , Catherine, Edgar and Elizabeth’s happiness, that doesn’t mean Cathy and Hareton’s happiness.

Actually, there is no such a character I really like in Wuthering Heights, every character seems teemed with agony and animosity, especially Heathcliff. Heathcliff is an orphan before Mr.Earnshaw adopt him, and in the novel, it says that Mr.Earnshaw treats Heathcliff even better than his own son, Hindley Earnshaw. It’s quite amazing that in spite of Earnshaw’s nice treatment, Heathcliff has no gratitude at all, he revenged Hindley and Catherine, even their heirs. After reading Heathcliff’story, my feeling is complicated, although he is the avenger who dominate the whole story by using his vengeful machinations, he is also the most pitiful guy in Wuthering Heights; he doesn’t know what is love and don’t know how to love. Heathcliff has lived with the Earnshaws for more than 10 years, but there is no attachment between him and the whole family except Catherine, but even Catherine who was died because of Heathcliff’s tournament. When he is torturing others, he is also giving himself a suffering.

Catherine, who is the heroine in the book, is described by Nelly as capricious and selfish. She is just like Heathcliff, doesn’t know how to love at all.

Anyways, Wuthering Heights gave me a torment, you can’t see any warm scene in the book, all you see is the fierce wind howled, and wild moor. However, at the end, the combination between Hareton and Cathy seems a hopeful light in the darkness, and the break of the day finally coming!

The book Wuthering Heights told us a story about love and revenge: the abandoned boy Heathdiff was adopted by Mr Eamshaw and lived with Mr Earnshaw’s son Hindley and daughter Cathiner. Hindley disliked Heathdiff. He insulted and maltreated Heathdiff in every possible way after Mr Earnshaw’s death. At the same time, peculiar emotion occurred between Cathiners and Heathdiff. Because of vanity and ignorance, Cathiner decided to mary Linton. Heathdiff left with anger. Three years later, Heathdiff returned to revenge. He succeeded in annexing all the property of Hindley’s and the Linton’s. However, Cathiner’s ghost pestered him all the time, and he died in mental disorder.

To understand Wuthering Heights, you must know the auther Amily well. She had been abnormal in inentality ever since her childhood. Her sister Charlotte had once said that Amily was even stronger than a man in character, and more simple than a child. He name Heathdiff was compounded by the words Heath and Cliff, itself gave the readers a feeling of unfeelingness, which well annotated Amily’s abnormal mentality.

Abnormal mentality did good for inducing and enriching the imagination of the auther in some way. Sometimes, Amily’s imagination was beyond human nature but urueasenable. That was why she could with the thrilling scene in Mr lockwood’s dream, the behainour of Cathiner when she fell ill, and the words full of strong enthusiasm but unimaginable like. They were locked in an embrace from which I thought my mistress would never be released alive.

Amily’s abnormal quality decided the thinking way during her creating, but her work was far from abnormal. After all this term’s learning on English literature , Wuthering height may be the most impressive novel to me . So I will discuss something special in this book , the gothic setting.

What is gothic setting ?

Gothic setting is one of the fiction genres which first begin at the middle of 19 century in England . Sa一vage , mystery , terror , backward , dark , family curse , supernatural and suspense are the signal features of this kind of fiction genre . It mainly talks something about the dark side of society such as family hatred and succession race . The story in this style usually happens in remote place that far away from city .

What do we know about gothic setting in Wuthering heights ?

In fact , what impresses me most in this novel is the description of the environment . It is full of gothic setting . We can find that there is no sunshine in Wuthering heights all the year around , the haze and atmosphere there make people feel mystery and depressive . The weather is always changing according to the plot . When there is something badly happen , the environment will be influenced . For example, rain comes at once after Catherine’s betray . When it comes to Catherine’s death , it changes quickly and suddenly to hea一vy rain and strong wind . All in all , I think all this gothic setting is to show the feeling of writer .

The gothic setting in the book not only shows us the mystery of the environment , but also tells us the society stage and the different life style between different classes in that period . To Catherine , Heathcriff who belongs to the lower class represents spiritual love while Linton in the upper class represents material . She is in a dilemma to make a decision . On one hand , all of us know Catherine loves Heathcriff deeply . On the other hand , Linton can give her the life she expects , a rich and comfortable life and be respected by people . Material wins in the end .

What do we learn from this novel ?

True love or material , this is a question . In the novel , Catherine sacrifice her love to pursue a comfortable live . Actually material is usually the first choice I think when most of the women come to this decision . This was one of the hotest topic at 2010 after a women said on TV she would rather to cry in a BMW than to laugh on a bicycle . What she said liked a big stone thrown into a peaceful lake . Can money really replace love ? A lot of people argue on this question whether it is worthy of sacrificing on the Internet .

As far as I’am concerned , nothing can take the place of our love . Though material is necessary , too much money can not make people happier . It is ordinary for us to persue a better life . But do we really ha一ve to sacrifice our love ? Why can’t we make our life comfortable through our hands or with our lover . Maybe we will come to some trouble . But all these obstacles are just to make us stronger . Though the process is difficult , it maybe the most precious memory and our treasures after overcoming all this difficulties .
