哲学理论的创新，是从突破旧观念、解放思想开始的。蒙田的怀疑论作为中世纪哲学和近代经验论、唯理论哲学之间的一个逻辑环节，所起的正是这种作用。分析蒙田怀疑论的个性特征，对于我们正确把握西方哲学的发展模式具有重要价值。
蒙田(1533-1592年)是文艺复兴晚期的法国人文主义哲学家。在文艺复兴这个特定的时期，一切进步的思想家都有这样或那样形式的怀疑思想，蒙田只是人文主义怀疑思想的代表人物。蒙田没有专门的哲学着作，他的哲学思想和其政治、宗教等思想一样，均出现在他以文学的方式写成的三卷本《尝试集》中。他不是一位有系统理论的哲学家，也没有创建新的哲学体系，他的怀疑论思想只是对古代怀疑论思想的“恢复”或“复兴”。
哲学概念的怀疑论是指以克服独断论为目的，以人类在一定时期所得到的认识为反思对象，以人类特有的思辩为基础而形成的怀疑客观存在和获得客观真理的可能性的学说。这一学说在古代哲学家皮浪和塞克斯都·恩披里可那里能够找到依据。日耳曼的“蛮族”人侵，摧毁了古希腊罗马的一切文化，包括古希腊罗马的哲学。接着是宗教神学长达10的精神独裁。在文艺复兴运动中，资产阶级的思想家在各个领域里对宗教神学、经院哲学和各种旧的传统观念开展了无情的批判和斗争，他们特别重视继承和利用在中世纪遭到摧残的古希腊罗马的“世俗文化”，作为反对封建神学的思想武器。蒙田也就成了近代最先全面恢复古代怀疑论观念的哲学家。
蒙田怀疑论的基本依据是：人本身的不确定性。在他看来，“人是一个异常不足道的、变化无常和动摇不定的创造物，关于人找到确定不变的判断是困难的”。这样，人就不可能得到关于自己和关于事物的绝对确定的、永恒不变的知识;感觉会是虚假的，感觉会欺骗我们。由于感觉不是绝对可靠的，在这种感觉基础上形成的理性认识也不是绝对可靠的。因此，就感性知识和理性知识的性质来说，对任何事情予以确定，是愚蠢的表现。这样，人并没有绝对可靠的知识;一切事物都处在不断的运动变化之中。他说:“就是没有永恒的存在，我们的存在是如此，万物的存在亦是如此。我们，及我们的判断和所有其他生灵，都在不断的滚动、转变中逝去。因此没有任何东西是屹立不变的，而我们和存在之间并没有任何联系”。既然事物是变化的，我们人关于事物的知识就是相对的，而不是绝对的，任何自诩为达到绝对不变的知识的人，是一种无知的傲慢;知识同认识者是相联系着的，因而人们的知识也是多种多样的。对于同一个事物，在不同的时间里，可以有不同的`认识。这样，知识不但是不确定的，而且也不能以一种认识作为人必须接受的统一的知识。“我们试图从事件的相似引出推论是不确定的，因为事件总是不相似的”，“对于同一事物两个人不能作出一样的判断;不但在不同的人那里，而且同一个人在不同的时间里，找到两个完全一致的观点是不可能的”。在关于人们认识的差别性和一致性问题上，蒙田强调差别性，却否定了共同性。在他那里，认识完全个人化了，认识的差别性成了人们彼此之间的共同认识的障碍。
实际上，蒙田的怀疑论在古代怀疑论的基础上，并没有提出更多的、更有说服力的新论据，他的怀疑论的个性特征不在于此，而在于它与众不同的历史作用上。如果说其他的怀疑论破坏了人们的信念，使人不相信其理性有依据科学发展、认识客观世界的能力，对科学发展构成了威胁，那么蒙田的怀疑主义则具有另一种性质:它是摧毁中世纪经院哲学精神统治的有力武器，导致了近代以经验论和唯理论为标志的哲学革命，对人和人的认识能力的批判同其他人文主义者对人及其理性的颂扬一起完善了人类对自身的自我认识。因此，蒙田怀疑论的结论是有局限性的，但在文艺复兴那个特定的年代，它的实际意义却是非常积极的。
怀疑主义成为蒙田哲学的重要内容，并不像有人所说的那样，他一头钻进了那座塔楼，在与世隔绝的背景下经历了他的所谓“怀疑危机”。他的怀疑思想的产生以及他敢于把他的怀疑主义的矛头指向经院哲学，有其深刻的社会根源和自然科学基础。
封建教会内部日益激化的矛盾和长达30年的法国宗教战争，是蒙田经历“怀疑危机”的重要原因。1378年继任教皇乌尔班六世是意大利人，而驻罗马的法国红衣主教们却另选克利门特七世为“对立教皇”，天主教会便陷人分裂。这两个教皇互相争夺管辖地区，互相开除教籍。由于异端势力逐步强大起来，教会感到内外交困，因而于14在意大利的比萨召开了宗教会议。这个会议开除了两个教皇的教籍，选出第三个教皇，即亚历山大五世。至此，天主教会成了三个教皇鼎立的局面，天主教会的丑态完全暴露了出来。教会内部的矛盾激化使教会及其所宣扬的宗教神学的权威受到了严重挑战，长达30年的法国宗教战争则动摇了人们的信仰。所谓“宗教战争”，是天主教徒与加尔文教徒(新教徒)这两种势力的厮杀。16世纪30年代蒙田这一代人面临着一个尖锐的问题:对于基督教的两派—天主教与新教何去何从?新教徒怀疑传统的权威，而天主教徒则怀疑《圣经》的权威。蒙田在《尝试集》第二卷中指出:“就民众而言，一旦他们胆敢批判和谴责他们以前奉为神圣的那些观念，一旦他们看到自己的某些宗教条文受到怀疑，就会很快怀疑到其他信念的可靠性并且抛弃一切权威。”蒙田是一个天主教徒，但天主教的虚伪性、性和残酷性已将自身的“神圣”外衣剥得精光;对思想的严厉禁锢，对异教徒的毫不宽容，绵延30余年之弥.的宗教战争，使法国人民长期处于苦难之中。蒙田亲身经历了这样的社会时代，这些刀砍不掉的事实使这位天主教徒过去那种宗教信仰不能不为之动摇。
蒙田敢于怀疑经院哲学，另一个非常重要的原因是近代自然科学的革命动摇了神学世界观的根基。首先向天主教宣战的是哥白尼的太阳中心说。它提出了地球并不是神意安排的宇宙中心，而是和其他天体一样都按力学规律运动的一个普通天体。科学革命中，与哥白尼齐名、被誉为这一革命的两大代表人物之一的就是比利时的解剖学家维萨里。他以自己的医学成就给了天主教致命的一击。维萨里通过解剖观察出:男人身上的肋骨与女人一样多;人体中没有永不毁坏的“复活骨”。这些见解否认了上帝用男人肋骨创造出女人的说法，驳斥了耶酥可以通过复活骨使死人复活的无稽之谈。近代自然科学的革命也是世界观的深刻革命，它在观念上导致了对正统神学宇宙观的怀疑。
封建社会内部孕育了它的对立物一资本主义。然而，封建教会却成了资本主义发展的严重障碍。鼎盛时期的封建教会，在经济上，拥有大量的土地，从事各种工商业、运输业和放债活动，征收“什一税”，教皇收人高于欧洲各国国王收人的总和政治上，教会拥有自己的法庭、监狱和武装力量，肆意镇压“异端”。在组织上，罗马教会建立了以教皇为首的高度集权的国际组织和严格的教阶制度，成为西欧封建制度的国际中心和最强大的支柱。在思想上，基督教神学具有至高无上的权威，一切按照神学中通行的原则来处理，教会教条成为政治信条，圣经词句在各法庭中都有法律效力，教会垄断了文化教育，垄断了整个精神生活，实行了严酷的思想统治。教会这种万流归宗的特殊社会地位决定了它必然成为资产阶级反封建斗争的众矢之的。与此同时，为基督教会的统治服务的经院哲学也就必然成为资产阶级思想家反封建斗争的切人口。蒙田和其他人文主义思想家一道，向经院哲学开战。与哥白尼和布鲁诺那种仗义直言、大义凛然的战斗方式不同，蒙田的作战方式是用他那富于弹性的怀疑主义武器来动摇经院哲学和教会存在的根基。
蒙田的怀疑论怀疑任何知识的可靠性，而经院哲学是当时占统治地位的意识形态，被教会说成是绝对的、终极的真理，它们不仅是人类智慧的最高标准，而且是人类行为的最高准则。所以，蒙田怀疑论的矛头直接指向就是经院哲学。蒙田宜布人类有权怀疑和不相信宗教权威。他认为经院哲学家们所说的话彼此抄来抄去，尽是些胡言乱语，这些东西的可靠性是非常值得怀疑的。盲目追随别人的人，追随不了什么，他得不到什么。此外，蒙田依据他的怀疑主义原则，否定灵魂不朽、神造奇迹等天主教的传统观念。他认为，灵魂不朽找不到经验的或理性的根据，证明它的不朽是徒劳无益的。传统的天主教观念认为，奇迹是上帝首肯而超越自然法则之上的。蒙田则认为奇迹在认识论上也是没有根据的，“奇迹建立在我们对大自然的无知这一基础上，而不是大自然本身所固有的”。把奇怪的事称为奇迹以及那种奇怪的观念都含有某种群体的优越感。“我们看到野蛮人觉得奇怪，他们看到我们也同样觉得奇怪。”蒙田和其他人文主义者对经院哲学的批判，第一次冲破了宗教的、封建的藩篱，沉重地打击了宗教神学的精神独裁，唤醒了人们的理性，解放了人们的思想。
同任何事物的发展一样，人类哲学思想的发展也要遵循着辩证法的这一规律:由于内外矛盾的作用，必然要经过由量变到质变再到新的量变的辩证过程，这样必然使整个哲学史的发展呈现为若干不同质的阶段。黑格尔曾把新旧两个阶段比喻为两种安定的状态，而把夹在中间的怀疑论哲学比喻为不安定的因素和环节。正是由于有这种因素，旧的平衡、稳定才能被打破，量的积累、渐进的过程才会中断，因而才会有新的发展阶段的出现。蒙田的怀疑论哲学在中世纪的经院哲学与近代的经验论、唯理论哲学之间，正是作为中间环节而起作用的。

蒙田的怀疑论摧毁了中世纪经院哲学的精神统治，中世纪大一统的思想控制已不复存在，越来越多的人开始厌恶神学领域的无谓争论而转人了对现实世界本身的研究。如何才能正确地认识现实世界的问题，即认识论问题，便成为近代英国经验论和欧洲大陆唯理论哲学研究的重要问题，甚至是最主要的问题。弗兰西斯·培根把自己的主要哲学着作称作(新工具》，在他看来，哲学的主要任务就是要为人类认识自然、解释自然提供可靠的方法和工具。笛卡尔发表的第一部重要哲学着作叫作《方法谈》，他和培根一样，也把认识方法和思维方法看作哲学研究的首要问题，以为确定科学的方法论原则，乃是世界上最重要的事。洛克更是明确地把哲学宣布为认识论，他的《人类理智论》对人的认识能力、知识的起源、确实性、范围等一系列问题进行了全面的探讨。近代其他的经验论和唯理论哲学家也无不如是。近代的经验论和唯理论哲学为了解决认识论问题进行了长达200年的艰苦又有成效的探索，这种探索正是由蒙田破除中世纪经院哲学的独断引发的。
蒙田认识论观点在理论形式上具有怀疑主义的特点，但同皮浪式的怀疑论有着根本的区别。、他的怀疑论思想，不是抽象地否定一切知识，不是鼓吹蒙昧主义，而是以怀疑论思想作为立足点，以促使人们破除对绝对真理的迷信，清除经院哲学留在认识道路上的迷信的垃圾，使人无止境地去探索新知。他说，当“怀疑思想家”说“我怀疑”或“我不知道”的时候，至少相信他自己的怀疑是确定的，因为他们知道他们不知道，他们是想用问题的形式陈述“我知道什么?”所以怀疑思想家并不怀疑自己的力量和自己的认识活动，“我相信我的一切力量”。这一观点对笛卡尔产生了很大的影响，从中可见笛卡尔“我思故我在”的影子。蒙田的怀疑论对后世哲学的影响不仅在于宣布了一种新的需要，而且还为新哲学的产生直接莫定了基础。
