Training elephants
Lesson 41 Training elephants
First listen and then answer the following question.
At what point does the training of a captive wild elephant begin?
Two main techniques have been used for training elephants, which we may respectively the tough and the gentle. The former method simply consists of setting an elephant to work and beating him until he does what is expected of him. Apart from moral considerations this is a stupid method of training, for it produces a resentful animal who at a later stage may well turn man-killer. The gentle method requires more patience in the early stages, but produces a cheerful, good-tempered elephant who will give many years of loyal service.
The first essential in elephant training is to assign to the animal a single mahout who will be entirely responsible for the job. Elephants like to have one master just as dogs do, and are capable of a considerable degree of personal affection. There are even stories of half-trained elephant calves who have refused to feed and pined to death when by some unavoidable circumstance they have been deprived of their own trainer. Such extreme cases must probably be taken with a grain of salt, but they do underline the general principle that the relationship between elephant and mahout is the key to successful training.
The most economical age to capture an elephant for training is between fifteen and twenty years, for it is then almost ready to undertake heavy work and can begin to earn its keep straight away. But animals of this age do not easily become subservient to man, and a very time man, and a very firm hand must be employed in the early stages. The captive elephant, still roped to a tree, plunges and screams every time a man approaches, and for several days will probably refuse all food through anger and fear. Sometimes a tame elephant is tethered nearby to give the wild one confidence, and in most cases the captive gradually quietens down and begins to accept its food. The next stage is to get the elephant to the training establishment, a ticklish business which is achieved with the aid of two tame elephants roped to the captive on either side.
When several elephants are being trained at one time, it is customary for the new arrival to be placed between the stalls of two captives whose training is already well advanced. It is then left completely undisturbed with plenty of food and water so that it can absorb the atmosphere of its new home and see that nothing particularly alarming is happening to its companions. When it is eating normally, its own training begins. The trainer stands in front of the elephant holding a long stick with a sharp metal point. Two assistants, mounted on tame elephants, control the captive from either side, while others rub their hands over his skin to the accompaniment of a monotonous and soothing chant. This is supposed to induce pleasurable sensations in the elephant, and its effects are reinforced by the use of endearing epithets. The elephant is not son', or 'ho! my father', or 'my mother', according to the age and sex of the captive. The elephant is not immediately susceptible to such blandishments, however, and usually lashes fiercely with its trunk in all directions. These movements are controlled by the trainer with the metal-pointed stick, and the trunk eventually becomes so sore that the elephant curls it up and seldom afterwards uses it for offensive purposes.

Sakura is the Japanese name for ornamental cherry trees, Prunus serrulata, and their blossoms. Cherry fruit (known as sakuranbo) come from a different species of tree.
Sakura, a well-known and ubiquitous symbol of Japan, are represented on all manner of consumer goods, including kimono, stationery, and dishware. Cherry blossoms are an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life, and as such are frequently depicted in art. There is at least one popular folk song, originally meant for the shakuhachi (bamboo flute), titled ”Sakura“, as well as a number of pop songs. ”Sakura“ is also a common Japanese female name.
Sakura is indigenous to the Himalayas and east Asia. Some trees can be found in China and Korea but the largest number and variety of sakura, more than 305 species, can be seen in Japan. Many of them were artificially hybridized or grafted by the Japanese many centuries ago.
”On the other hand, in China, cherry blossom is the symbol of feminine dominance, female beauty and sexuality. Additionally, the cherry blossom is the Chinese symbol of feminine principle and it also symbolizes love in the language of herbs. Interestingly, cherry blossom is the flower of the April in China, whereas in Japan, it is wisteria.“ Spring flowers of Japan
Japan's most beloved variety is the Somei Yoshino. Its flowers are nearly pure white, tinged with the palest pink, especially near the stem. The flowers bloom, and usually fall within a week, before the leaves come out. Therefore, the trees look nearly white from top to bottom. The variety takes its name from the village of Somei (now part of Toshima in Tokyo). It was developed in the mid- to late-19th century at the end of the Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji period. The Somei Yoshino is so widely associated with cherry blossoms that jidaigeki and other works of fiction often depict the variety in the Edo period or earlier; such depictions are anachronisms.
Other categories include yamazakura, yaezakura, and shidarezakura. The yaezakura have large flowers, thick with rich pink petals. The shidarezakura, or weeping cherry, has branches that fall like those of a weeping willow, bearing cascades of pink flowers.
Annually, the Japanese Meteorological Agency and general public track the sakura zensen, or Cherry-Blossom Front. Nightly forecasts follow the weather segment of news programs. The blossoming begins in Okinawa in January, and typically reaches Kyoto and Tokyo at the end of March or the beginning of April. Then it proceeds north, arriving in Hokkaidō a few weeks later. Japanese pay close attention to these forecasts. They will go to parks, shrines and temples with family and friends and hold a ”flower viewing party“ known as hanami. Hanami festivals celebrate the beauty of sakura, and for many, it is a chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful view. Hanami custom in Japan dates back to many centuries ago. It is witten in Nihon Shoki that the Hanami festival were already held in the 3rd century.
Most Japanese schools and public buildings have sakura trees outside of them. Since the fiscal and school year both begin in April, in many parts of Honshū, the first day of work or school will coincide with the cherry blossom season.

Before we entered Junior Three,we had already heard many stor-ies about it.Someone said life in Junior Three wasn't easy:it was full of hardships. This frightened us a lot.
So far we have been Junior Three students for almost four months and we do experience what others told us before:Junior Three means less sleep and much more work.It is just like a long-distance race. The heavy pressure from teachers and parents makes us hard to breathe.Though I feel tired,I must keep on running.I'm clear that only by work-ing hard can I succeed.”He laughs best who laughs last.“
There is still a long way for me to go,I believe that hard work will bring me a bright future because”the happy sunny days are coming only after all the hardships endured”.

Time is gone like flowing water, and the year has passed. In retrospect, a year's time is very short, but the passage of time is not our sigh, sorrow... You can keep it. But people have not strengthened the idea of cherishing time, and still “go to my own way”! Those “cherish time” and “time never return” have become empty words.
To truly cherish the time must be aware of the importance of time. How important is time to us? Your study, work, sleep... It's all within the range of time. Time includes our life, study, and rest... Time is everywhere, if you do not cherish it, it will slip away from you so that you can not find its figure.
Let us cherish the time, do not let the time from our side to go nowhere without slipping away!

When anyone opens a current account at a bank, he is lending the bank money, repayment of which he may demand at any time, either in cash or by drawing a cheque in favour of another person. Primarily, the banker-customer relationship is that of debtor and creditor -- who is which depending on whether the customer's account is in credit or is overdrawn. But, in addition to that basically simple concept, the bank and its customer owe a large number of obligations to one another. Many of these obligations can give in to problems and complications but a bank customer, unlike, say, a buyer of goods, cannot complain that the law is loaded against him.
The bank must obey its customer's instructions, and not those of anyone else. When, for example, a customer first opens an account, he instructs the bank to debit his account only in respect of cheques draw by himself. He gives the bank specimens of his signature, and there is a very firm rule that the bank has no right or authority to pay out a customer's money on a cheques on which its customer's signature has been forged. It makes no difference that the forgery may have been a very skilful one: the bank must recognize its customer's signature. For this reason there is no risk to the customer in the practice, adopted by banks, of printing the customer's name on his cheques. If this facilitates forgery, it is the bank which will lose, not the customer.

To be or nor to be, that is a question. To succeed or to fail? How to succeed and how to achieve? These problems confuse many teenagers in nowadays.
We all have dreams, and we all work hard to realize them. But there will always be some problems and setbacks to stop the pace of advance. When they appear, what should we do? To stop or to go on? Mrs. Curie told us the answer. We all know that Mrs. Curie discovered radium, but how many people really know how hard she worked? At that time, there were many people disapprove of Mrs. Curie. Although she got over hundreds of difficulties, she still believed in herself and never gave up. Finally, she succeeded to discover radium. She proved that she was right by her continuous hard work and her strong spirit. We should learn from Mrs. Curie. She told us the truth through her own experiences that believe in yourself, you can do it! Never give up, face the difficulties with a smile, someday, you will be proud of yourself.
The key to success is confidence. It makes you brave, helps you get over the troubles, and brings motivation to you. For example, somebody always get nervous when they have an important speech, if they are in a nervous mood, the results are always terrible. But if they are confident to themselves, the results turn out to be better. Therefore, be confident, believe in yourself, keep smile in your face when comes to difficulties, and you will achieve more.

nowadays more and more college graduates decide to pursue postgraduate study on the eve of their graduation. from the table, we can see that in 20xx , there were only 3,900,000 million applicants participating in the exam. the recent statistics show that the applicants have increased greatly with a total number of 7,970,000last year and 9,450,00 this year.
the great change which has taken place is chiefly due to the following reasons. first, college graduates have to face a tight job market, which is increasingly competitive because a huge number of them will go job-hunting. confronted with the tough job-seeking, more and nore graduates turn to further education for a better future. in addition, there also a number of students who really want to continue their studies at graduate schools to deepen their knowledge in a particular field.
what’s the next stop of those college graduates? in my opinion, receiving further education is a good solution for the college graduates. but it’s still up to those graduates who have a good knowledge of themselves to make the final choice.
It is curious that our own offenses should seem so much less heinous than the offenses of others. I suppose the reason is that we know all the circumstances that have occasioned them and so manage to excuse in ourselves what we cannot excuse in others. We turn our attention away from our own defects, and when we are forced by untoward events to consider them, find it easy to condone them. For all I know we are right to do this; they are part of us and we must accept the good and bad in ourselves together.

(Common as it is, the above picture has deep implication). As is vividly shown in the cartoon, at least five patients are staying in one hospital who are injured because of jay-walking, driving after drinking and disregarding of the laws. If we take a closer watch, it is of little difficulty to find that one police is patiently explicating the traffic laws to one injured person, sitting at a wheel chair which is pushed by one nurse.
There is no doubt that it describes a common phenomenon in our society that traffic problems are increasingly severe. What might trigger this affair(For my part, the following two are of utmost importance.) For one part, the general public have failed to realize the importance of abiding by the traffic regulations and laws(and a big deal of the attention have been distracted by the so-called“great affair”). Once some drivers easily disregard the traffic signals, so do other drivers who intend to obey the laws. Moreover, the current state of affairs depicted in the drawing, may have been encouraged, though not justified, by the lack of severe legal penalty. If someone does disorderly parking or drive under the influence of alcohol, the punishment is not so harsh that the drivers could afford to learn a heavy lesson from the fine. (If we let this situation continue as it is, ultimately, our society will suffer a great destruction.)
It is advisable for us to take steps to reverse this current evil trend. On one hand, we should cultivate the awareness of people that everyone needs to reflect on his or her uncivilized conducts and strengthen his self-discipline. On the other hand, it is high time that more severe and sound laws and regulations should be introduced to harness and curb this matter. Only in this way, can we crack the hard nut and embrace a bright future.

My summer plan is to read more books, do sports, and the most exciting plan is going to Australia.
I am always a little “bookworm”. I read as many books as I can. My favorite books Percy Jackson and Olympians, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Dork Diaries. I read in the car, on the bench outside and even in the dark with a flashlight! Reading in these wrong places has “granted” my poor eyes a pair of big glasses. I think I will be even crazier about reading books in the summer. I imagine myself in the house with the cold air conditioner blowing cool air at me. The hot sun outside only gives me the sunlight and not its heat any more. My eyes and whole body are literally swimming in the wonderful words and beautiful pictures. This is not a dream. I am sure that I will read a lot of books in the summer.
Don’t think I am an inside person, reading books all day. I love doing sports. My favorite sports are badminton and swimming. In the summer, I can do many kinds of sports, especially swimming. Swimming doesn’t give you all stinky and nasty sweat. I started swimming when I was five. I can do breast stroke, free-style, and more. Swimming will be my daily activity in the summer.
The most exciting plan in the summer is going to Australia. I have read from many books that Australia is a very beautiful country. I have heard that when it is summer here it is winter there, so I have to bring extra winter clothes with me to the trip. There are kangaroos in Australia. They have a big pocket in front of their stomach to carry babies. They can jump very high with their short but strong legs. I can almost see myself petting a kangaroo’s soft fun and even sitting inside of a female kangaroo’s pocket! Australia is a big country in Oceania. People there speak English. Mother says that Australian have a very peculiar accent that I have to get used to. I don’t care what accent they have. I just want to travel in this new and special country in the summer.
This is my summer plan. Do you like it?
