No living creature can laugh except man. Trees may bleed when they are wounded, and beasts in the field will cry in pain and hunger, yet only I have the gift of laughter and it is mine to use whenever I choose. Henceforth I will cultivate the habit of laughter. I will smile and my digestion will improve; I will chuckle and my burdens will be lightened; I will laugh and my life will be lengthened for this is the great secret of long life and now it is mine.
I will paint this day with laughter; I will frame this night in song. Never will I labor to be happy; rather will I remain too busy to be sad. I will enjoy today's happiness today. It is not grain to be stored in a box. It is not wine to be saved in a jar. It cannot be saved for the morrow. It must be sown and reaped on the same day and this I will do, henceforth.
And with my laughter all things will be reduced to their proper size. I will laugh at my failures and they will vanish in clouds of new dreams; I will laugh at my successes and they will shrink to their true value. I will laugh at evil and it will die untasted; I will laugh at goodness and it will thrive and abound. Each day will be triumphant only when my smiles bring forth smiles from others and this l do in selfishness, for those on whom l flown are those who purchase not my goods.

The Real Self
The only problem unconsciously assumed by all Chinese philosophers to be of any importance is: How shall we enjoy life, and who can best enjoy life? No perfectionism, no straining after the unattainable, no postulating of he unknowable; but taking poor, modal human nature as it is, how shall we organize our life so that we can woke peacefully, endure nobly and live happily?
Who are we? That is first question. It is a question almost impossible to answer. But we all agree with the busy self occupied in our daily activities is not quite the real self. We are quite sure we have lost something in the mere pursuit of living. When we watch a person running about looking for something in a field, the wise man can set a puzzle for all the spectator to solve: what has that person lost? Some one thinks is a watch; another thinks it is a diamond brooch; and others will essay other guesses. After all the guesses have failed, the wise man who really doesn't know what the person is seeking after, tells the company:“ I'll tell you. He has lost some breath.” And no one can deny that he is right. So we often forget our true self in the pursuit of living, like a bird forgetting its own danger in pursuit of a mantis which again forgets its own danger in pursuit of another.
Let Us Smile
The thing that goes the farthest toward making life worthwhile,
That costs the least and does the most, is just a pleasant smile.
The smile that bubbles from the heart that loves its fellow men,
Will drive away the clouds of gloom and coax the Sun again.
It'sfull of worth and goodness, too, with manly kindness blent;
It’s worth a million dollars, and it doesn’t cost a cent.
There is no room for sadness when we see a cheery smile;
It always has the same good look; it’s never out of style;
It nerves us on to try again when failure makes us blue;
The dimples of encouragement are good for me and you.
It pays the highest interest — for it is merely lent;
It’s worth a million dollars, and it doesn’t cost a cent.
A smile comes very easy — you can wrinkle up with cheer,
A hundred times before you can squeeze out a salty tear;
It ripples out, moreover, to the heartstrings that will tug,
And always leaves an echo that is very like a hug.
So, smile away! Folks understand what by a smile is meant;
It’s worth a million dollars, and it doesn’t cost a cent.
它充满价值和美好,混合着坚毅的仁爱之心;
当我们看到喜悦的微笑,忧伤就会一扫而光;
它始终面容姣好,永不落伍;
失败令我们沮丧之时,它鼓励我们再次尝试;
它支付的利息高昂无比──只因它是种借贷形式;
你能百次微笑,可难得挤出一滴泪;
继续微笑吧!谁都懂得它意味着什么;
Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young. An individual human existence should be like a river—small at first, narrowly contained within its banks, and rushing passionately past boulders and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being. Years may wrinkle the skin,but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
If the Dream is Big Enough
I used to watch her from my kitchen window, she seemed so small as she muscled her way through the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would often watch the kids as they play edduring recess. A sea of children, and yet to me, she stood out from them all.
I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could. I began to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone.She would practice dribbling and shooting over and over again, sometimes until dark.
One day I asked her why she practiced so much. She looked directly in my eyes and without a moment of hesitation she said, “I want to go to college. The only way I can go is if I get a scholarship. I like basketball. I decided that if I were good enough, I would get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball.I want to be the best. My Daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the factsdon't count.”
Then she smiled and ran towards the court to recap the routine I had seen over and over again. Well, I had to give it to her―she was determined.I watched her through those junior high years and into high school. Every week,she led her varsity team to victory.
dribbling ['dr?bl]n.
One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head cradled in her arms. I walked across the street and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong. “Oh,nothing,” came a soft reply. “I am just too short.” The coach told her that at 5’5” she would probably never get to play for a top ranked team― much less offered a scholarship―so she should stop dreaming about college. She was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed her disappointment. I asked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet.
She lifted her head from her hands and told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just did not understand the power of adream. He told her that if she really wanted to play for a good college, if she truly wanted a scholarship, that nothing could stop her except one thing ― her own attitude. He told her again, “If the dream is big enough, the factsdon't count.”
The next year, as she and her team went to the Northern CaliforniaChampionship game, she was seen by a college recruiter. She was indeed offered a scholarship, a full ride, to a Division 1, NCAA women's basketball team. She was going to get the college education that she had dreamed of and worked toward for all those years.
It's true: If the dream is big enough, the facts don't count.

The mind is a powerful thing, and in a nanosecond, it can elevate or crush our mood. There’s a real problem when we start buying into the negative thoughts we have about ourselves。
Many of us have problems with negative thoughts playing on the channel of our minds, but if you’re engaging in it consistently, and you believe it, it could be eroding your sense of self-esteem. Here are a few beliefs that indicate you may need to switch the station:
I’m a loser.
I’m not good enough.
I don’t deserve…. .
No one likes me.
I suck at relationships.
I’m a failure.
Negative thoughts conjures up bad feelings and hooks you into believing that what those old tapes in your head are playing is actually true. In short, it brings your focus to your failures, and that gets you nowhere。
What can you do? Here are some suggestions:
1. Live in the moment
Self-talk is so subtle that we often don’t notice its effect on our mood and belief systems. Key things to notice are “if only or “what if” statements: the former keep you stuck in the past with regret, while the latter keep you fearful of the future. There is nothing you can do about the past, and the future isn’t here yet, so stay in the present moment。
2. Visualize the good things
If we want to change the negative tapes playing in our heads, we have to visualize ourselves positively—that means seeing yourself non-judgmentally. Picture accepting yourself. How would that look? Draw a picture in your mind and expand on it。
3. Recognize that actions always follow beliefs
Whatever you believe, you’ll experience more of, and you’ll also find yourself behaving in ways that are congruent with your beliefs. So, start believing the best about yourself: act as if you believe that you’re a valuable and worthy person。
4. Pay attention to triggers
Triggers are anything that can start the old tapes playing. If a certain person is a trigger for you, set boundaries with them。
5. Develop positive counterstatements to refute negative self-talk
Instead of always putting yourself down in your head, think of some things you actually like about yourself. What are your strengths, what are you good at? Keep your counterstatements in the here-and-now, instead of saying “I’m not good enough” try saying, “I am capable. I’m good at ______. I accept myself the way I am。”
Thinking poorly about ourselves gets us nowhere and is extremely self-limiting. Decide today to turn off the negative self-talk channel in your mind and develop your true potential。
Have you ever been around someone who immediately put you at ease? Perhaps you may be one of those people who others feel safe around.
What is the common thread in people who emanate warmth? Some may think it is related to personality or physical appearance. But this does little to explain why bright beacons of light can be found anywhere. Essence has nothing to do with our exterior.
I like to believe the common thread is a universal trait we are all able to tap into. When we see the truth of who we are and wholeheartedly love every part of that truth, we automatically shine. When we embrace our essence and live in congruence with who we are, we radiate peace.
Every day we can choose to wake up and see the gift of getting to be who we are. When we decide to live from this way of “being,” it becomes easy to see this same light and gift in everyone — even those who may not yet see it in themselves.
The benefits of self-love are many. What I know to be true without a doubt in my heart, is that we are all capable of giving this gift to ourselves.
These words help me remember why embracing my essence is always the best thing to do. Perhaps this may resonate with where you are.
When you love who you are,
you become a conduit of light.
Just drop into your heart space,
and live life from this view.
For all of this doing
is not who you are.
Listen to your heart’s soft whisper,
this voice will show you the way.
Live life from your essence
is what she will say.
See the light in yourself,
and your world will be bright.
There is no need to worry,
you are exactly as you should be;
你正是自己本来的模样;
remember to love who you are,
and love you will see.
i am nature's greatest miracle.
since the beginning of time never has there been another with my mind, my heart, my eyes, my ears, my hands, my hair, my mouth. none that came before, none that live today, and none that come tomorrow can walk and talk and move and think exactly like me. all men are my brothers yet i am different from each. i am a unique creature.
i am nature's greatest miracle.
although i am of the animal kingdom, animal rewards alone will not satisfy me. within me burns a flame, which has been passed from generations uncounted and its heat is a constant irritation to my spirit to become better than i am, and i will. i will fan this flame of dissatisfaction and proclaim my uniqueness to the world.
none can duplicate my brush strokes, none can make my chisel marks, none can duplicate my handwriting, none can produce my child, and, in truth, none has the ability to sell exactly as i. henceforth, i will capitalize on this difference for it is an asset to be promoted to the fullest.
i am nature's greatest miracle.
vain attempts to imitate others no longer will i make. instead will i place my uniqueness on display in the market place. i will proclaim it, yea, i will sell it. i will begin now to accent my differences; hide my similarities. so too will i apply this principle to the goods i sell. salesman and goods, different from all others, and proud of the difference.
i am a unique creature of nature.
i am rare, and there is value in all rarity; therefore, i am valuable. i am the end product of thousands of years of evolution; therefore, i am better equipped in both mind and body than all the emperors and wise men who preceded me.
but my skills, my mind, my heart, and my body will stagnate, rot, and die lest i put them to good use. i have unlimited potential. only a small portion of my brain do i employ; only a paltry amount of my muscles do i flex. a hundredfold or more can i increase my accomplishments of yesterday and this i will do, beginning today.
nevermore will i be satisfied with yesterday's accomplishments nor will i indulge, anymore, in self-praise for deeds which in reality are too small to even acknowledge. i can accomplish far more than i have, and i will, for why should the miracle which produced me end with my birth? why can i not extend that miracle to my deeds of today?

《The Crow and The Pitcher》
A crow felt very thirsty. He looked for water everywhere. Finally, he found a pitcher.
But there was not a lot of water in the pitcher. His beak could not reach it. He tried again and again, but still could not touch the water.
When he was about to give up, an idea came to him. He took a pebble and dropped it into the pitcher. Then he took another and dropped it in.
Gradually, the water rose, and the crow was able to drink the water.

One cold night the king called Nasreddin to him and said, “If you're able to spend this night in the courtyard with only your shirt on, I will give you one hundred gold coins!”
In the courtyard Nasreddin saw a stone mill. He began to push it around, faster and faster. When dawn came, he was sweating all over himself.
The king got up and was surprised to see Nasreddin in high sprits. The king hated to lose one hundred gold coins, so he asked, “Was there a moon last night?”
“Yes.”
“Then our bargain is off,” said the king. “If there was a moon, it was warm. In that case even I could have spent the night outside!”
A few months later, the king and his men went hunting. It was hot summer and at the edge of the desert it was like a furnace. The king and his men were dying of thirst.
They turned toward Nasreddin's house in the hope of getting some water. Nasreddin was sitting in the edge of his well when he heard the voice of the king, “Nasreddin, bring some fresh water! Be quick and serve us!”
“Please make yourself at home,” said Nasreddin.
“Where is the water?” cried the king.
“Right here, Your Majesty, you see?” Nasreddin pointed to the well.
“You only show me the water but don't give me a drink!” fumed the king.
“Your Majesty, if the rays of the moon can warm a person, the sight of water can satisfy his thirst.”

Father’s Things
When Peter is 17, he is as tall as his father. So he begins to borrow his father’s clothes when he wants to go out with his father’s clothes when he wants to go out with his friends in the evening. Father doesn’t like this. And he always gets very angry when he finds his son wearing any of his things.
One evening when Peter is about to go out; his father stops him in the living room. He looks at Peter’s clothes very carefully. Then he says angrily, “Isn’t that one of my ties, Peter?”
“Yes, Father, it is,” answers Peter.
“And that shirt is mine, too.”
“Yes, that’s your, too.” answers Peter.
“And you’re wearing my belt!”
“Yes, I am, Father,” answers Peter, “You don’t want to your trousers to fall down, do you?”

After winning several archery contests,the young and rather boastful champion challenged a Zen master who was renowned for his skill as an archer.
The young man demonstrated remarkable technical proficiency when he hit a distant bull’s eye on his first try,and then split that arrow with his second shot.
“There,”he said to the old man, “see if you can match that!”
Undisturbed ,the master did not draw his bow,but rather motioned for the young archer to follow him up the mountain.
Curious about the old fellow’s `intentions,the champion followed him high into the mountain until they reached a deep chasm spanned by a rather flimsy and shaky log.
Calmly stepping out onto the middle of the unsteady and certainly perilous bridge ,the old maser picked a far away tree as a target,drew his bow,and fired a clean,direct hit.
“Now it is your turn,”he said as he gracefully stepped back onto the safe ground.Staring with terror into the seemingly bottomless and beckoning abyss,the young man could not force himself to step out onto the log,no less shoot at a target. “You have much skill with your bow,” the master said ,sensing his challenger’s predicament, “but you have little skill with the mind that lets loose the shot.”

It was a classic night. The noisy Mexico City gradually calmed down. The main stadium of Olympic track and field competition was enveloped in the darkness.
After he finished making the scenes the marathon winners received the trophies and marked the victory, Greenspan, the world famous newsreel producer, found the stadium empty. It was time for him to return to the hotel for a rest. He was about to leave when he suddenly saw a bandaged man with his right leg stained with the blood ran into the stadium. This man ran lamely out of breath, but he didn’t stop. After he ran along the runway for a circle and got to the goal, he collapsed on the ground...
Greenspan guessed this was a marathon athlete. Out of curiosity, he went over to ask why the athlete wanted to run to the goal with such a difficulty.
The young man called Kowari from Tanzania replied gently, “That my country sent me here from more than 20,000 kilometers is not let me get off the mark in the competition, but makes me complete the game. I want to run to the goal, though I have fallen behind all other runners, but I have a sacred goal like them: I will run to the goal. Though the audience won’t cheer me any more, my motherland is watching me intently from behind...”
Tears welled up in Greenspan's eyes. Soon, he spread the most touching scene in the history of the Olympic Games to every corner of the world.
Life should have a dream of reaching the peak, yet we should understand not everybody has the ability to do it.The most important is not whether we can reach the peak but whether we have made the greatest efforts-to reach the goal in the mind is a success.
