The police officer who escorted me home after you reported the Chevy stolen late one evening was too young to understand father-daughter politics and too old to have much tolerance for a snotty 16 year old. You were so decent about it, Dad, and I think that was probably what made it the worst night of my life.

I was at a stop sign and I watched as you turned the corner in your car. It didn’t immediately occur to me that it was you because the man driving looked so elderly and fragile behind the wheel of that huge car. It was rather like a slap in the face delivered from out of nowhere. Perhaps I saw your age for the first time that day. Or maybe I saw my own.

Fifty years ago this spring we planted kohlrabi together in a garden in Charles City, Iowa.

I didn’t know then that I would remember that day for the rest of my life. This week, we’ll plant kohlrabi together again, perhaps for the last time but I hope not. I don’t understand why planting kohlrabi with you is so important to me but it is. And the funny thing about it is, well, I don’t know quite how to tell you this, Dad...I don’t even like kohlrabi...but I like planting it with you.

I guess what I’m trying to say, Dad, is what every son and daughter wants to say to their Dad today. Honoring a Father on Father’s Day is about more than a Dad who brings home a paycheck, shares a dinner table, and attends school functions, graduations, and weddings. It isn’t even so much about kohlrabi, ’54 Chevrolets, and fly-fishing. It’s more about unconditionally loving children who are snotty and stubborn, who know everything and won’t listen to anyone. It’s about respect and sharing and acceptance and tolerance and giving and taking. It’s about loving someone more than words can say，and it’s wishing that it never had to end.

I could hardly believe my ears. Tears streamed down my face. He wanted me - me! This man had no obligation to me, but he was reaching out from his heart, and I accepted. During the adoption proceedings, the judge commented on all the undesirable duties of his profession and then with a tear in his eye, thanked us for brightening his day as he pronounced us father and daughter. I was twenty-five, but I was his little girl.

Three short years later, Bob, too, was diagnosed with cancer and was gone within the year. At first I was hurt and angry at God for taking this father away too. But eventually the love and acceptance that I felt from Dad came through again, and I became, once more, grateful for the years we had.

On Father's Day I always reflect on what I've learned about fatherhood. I've learned that it is not dependent on biology or even on raising a child. Fatherhood is a matter of the heart. Bob's gift from the heart will warm my soul for eternity.

我小心翼翼地拿起一片面包，往上面均匀地涂了一层沙拉酱，放上满满的肉松，肉松上面又加了一片面包，再往上面放了几根小薯条，又覆盖了一层面包，然后在面包上涂抹一层黄油，半成品三明治就大功告成了。叔叔把制作好的半成品放进了烤箱，告诉我们需要等待十分钟。利用等待的时间，一位阿姨带着我们一起跳舞，时间很快就到了，香喷喷的三明治新鲜出炉了。活动结束后，我轻轻地把三明治和扇子装进事先准备好的袋子，带回家送给爸爸。希望下次还能参加这种有趣的活动，不但可以丰富我的课外生活，还可以送给爸爸礼物，一举两得，多开心呀！

爸爸是个特别好的爸爸，特别的聪明，特别的能侃，特别的前卫，特别的幽默，特别的帅气。。。总之我无法不崇拜他。我的朋友们也喜欢和他聊天，陪他喝酒。这里面最典型的要数Future了。记得她有次一听我爸回北京了，就蹦蹦跳跳的带着一瓶儿看上去像是特意存了好几百年的白酒来了我家，一边和我爸拼酒一边神侃。从政治到经商，感情问题，谈话内容一直漂浮到瑜伽，普拉提。。。我这个双子座的人也佩服他们的跳跃。爸爸很喜欢我那些像Future一样二百五性格的朋友，让喝就喝，让吃就吃，让侃就侃，让住就住，字典里永远没有推辞和拒绝二字。我的每一个朋友爸爸都记得，我的朋友们谁夸了爸爸我都要第一时间汇报，因为爸爸特别开心我的朋友们都那麽喜欢他。他总是很自豪的说他和年轻人没有代沟。

长大之后我也常常陪爸爸喝酒，每次陪他喝酒时我就想起小的时候爸爸常常带我去公园玩儿，从公园出来之后就会带我去对面的小餐馆儿。爸爸会喝瓶冰镇啤酒，然后要一个腐竹花生，爸爸吃花生我吃腐竹。直到现在当腐竹和花生同时出现时，我还是只吃腐竹。那时妈妈工作特别忙，所以每次都是爸爸带我出去玩儿，带我到处去吃。记忆中那时爸爸还常常带我去吃西餐，看电影，看话剧。每次去看电影之前爸爸都会买一包栗子给我，电影开始后我就抱着那包栗子一边吃一边溜达，等到电影结束时我的那包栗子也就刚好吃完了。那时我常常缠着爸爸去看电影，爸爸觉得自己很成功，把他的.爱女从小就培养成了有文化修养的人，其实我只是想吃栗子。几年前我和爸爸又在北京看了场电影，爸爸特意去找了很多地方给我买了包栗子，我抱着那包暖暖的栗子好像又回到了小时候。但那一次我没有再抱着栗子满场溜达，而是真的和爸爸一起分享栗子，看了场完完整整的电影。

初中之前我都是被爸爸扛着上4楼的，每次一到楼梯口我就会绕着圈儿的耍赖。六年级毕业前我的体重直线上行，爸爸把腰闪了，从此这个习惯才被我懂事的改掉。

我曾经因为不会写作文而没出息的大哭，爸爸没有骂我，而是先给我做了两条黄花儿鱼和油焖大虾把我喂饱，并帮我写了我人生中第一篇正正式式的作文，叫做“我爱我的家乡”。后来这片作文被老师送去参赛还得了北京市的二等奖。我的奖品是一张奖状和一匹陶瓷制的昂头奔跑的骏马，爸爸也属马。从那片作文之后我再也没有怕过作文，而且突飞猛进的成为作文高分学生。在后来留学的日子里要写英文的Project我也能毫无畏惧的一通儿乱拽。这些都受益于爸爸帮我写的第一篇作文。

奶奶和姑姑常常在一旁煽风，非要我学习吃苦，要艰苦朴素（恨不得衣服要穿旧的，最好带补丁）。但爸爸的观念却完全相反，他不要我学习吃苦，不要我艰苦朴素。他认为吃苦是不用学的，当你到了一定要吃苦的环境，那麽吃苦就变成了人性的本能。后来证实了爸爸的话是对的，在瑞士有一段时间我把自己弄得特别辛苦，凌晨5点到家后只能睡2个多小时就要去上早上的课。一次煮出三天的意大利面，只为了节省些时间来睡觉。明明困得想哭，但还是每天过得很快乐，周末会买开得红红的幸福花奖励自己，我那时领悟了爸爸所说的本能。爸爸从不理别人的看法，在奶奶和姑姑连串的臭骂声中送了我第一双Prada的鞋子，第一双LV的鞋子，第一双Gucci的鞋子，（此处省略一部分，不然很有臭显摆的嫌疑。）。但最轰动奶奶和姑姑的是爸爸有次买了同一个品牌但不同款式的包包给我。这样的行为当然不能被想在我衣服上打补丁的奶奶认同，但其实我还是觉得奶奶看着爸爸这样宠我心里是特别美的。爸爸买的所有东西都是年轻人会喜欢的，我幸运的拥有一个喜欢漂亮东西并思想前卫的爸爸。家人都对爸爸的举动有很大成见，担心把我惯成一个崇尚名牌的虚荣孩子。但爸爸说他不能让自己的女儿有一天因为一个Chanel的包包就被一个男人骗走（虽然听起来夸张得像句玩笑）。

爸爸是对的，工作后我也没有像家人担心的那样跪拜在名牌脚下，我选择用自己的一些积蓄买了中国银行的股票做为给自己的生日礼物。（虽然回报和存款年息没什麽差别，虽然我还是有更多的钱不知花去了哪里）但爸爸一如既往的鼓励着我。爸爸常常告诉我钱是赚出来的，并不是攒出来的。所以我谨记着这句话。

爸爸让我没有一点压力的成长，从没有要求我一定要做什麽或不可以做什麽，所有的事情他都交给我自己去选择。但在我迷茫的时候他总会赶到我的身边牵着我的手给我最大的支持，给我指引大的方向。最难忘的是在找不到心仪工作之前的那段日子，我不是很抢手的毕业生，加上9’11的缘故一份满意的工作变得是那样遥不可及。我心急自己的前途，那时我觉得特别的迷茫，我找不到自己的起点。在回到Saipan的三个月里，我边等消息边在爸爸的公司帮忙，和他一起下班，一起吃晚饭。每天晚饭后爸爸都带我出去散步，和我谈心，其实爸爸是不忍心看着我给自己太大压力。爸爸告诉我让我好好享受那段时间，也许那段时间之后我都不会再有那麽长的假期陪在他的身边，陪他吃饭，陪他散步。如爸爸所讲，现在我要算着少得可怜的年假回北京或和家人旅游，三年里我也只回过Saipan一次。我特别怀念那段日子，每天在爸爸身边转悠，吃饭，散步，可那时我却傻乎乎的只知道着急。

最近几年爸爸很注重形体美，每天快走和塑造肌肉。和家人还有朋友一起吃饭时无论天气多冷他都不情愿穿上衣，为的是让别人赞美他的胸肌，另外的目的就是以此形成对比好让别人觉得无地自容。爸爸一直鼓励我让我寻找适合自己并容易坚持下去的运动。他很高兴听到我参加瑜伽课程，他很鼓励我这样做。我答应爸爸两个月后就可以让他看出我的改变，所以我很用心的练习着。

很多年都没有机会在父亲节这天陪爸爸吃饭，今天我随着记忆写下了一些让我难忘的事情。其实美好的记忆有太多太多，还有更美好的将来。在感谢爸爸的同时我还要感谢妈妈，因为这麽可爱，这麽聪明，这麽帅气，这麽好的爸爸是妈妈给我找到的！
