传说屈原，是春秋时期楚怀王的大臣，他倡导举贤授能，合纵联横，富国强兵。楚王后悔疏忠臣、亲奸党，不该听信谗言迁怒于屈原这样的忠良。他不甘心楚国就此衰败，立志收回失地，复国兴邦。当楚怀王找到屈原商议救国大计时，由于内奸告密，秦军还是追到了楚怀王躲避的地方，楚怀王不愿被俘，准备自缢而亡。在这危急关头，屈原与楚怀王换了衣服，一口气跑到了汨罗江边的一座桥上，抱石投江而死。获救的楚怀王为报答屈原的救命、救国之恩，告慰忠魂，密令沿江渔民划着船都去打捞屈原的遗体，用苇叶包了米饭投到江里，不让鱼虾把屈原吃掉。从此，楚国各地年年端午节吃粽子、划龙舟纪念屈原。
以后，为了纪念爱国诗人屈原，我国劳动人民在每年农历的五月初五，就有了龙舟竞渡、吃粽子、喝雄黄酒的风俗。端午节还被列了入世界非物质文化遗产名录。
