一、推荐人的数量

由于大部分美国学校要求三封推荐信,所以建议申请者联系5个左右的推荐人,有两个推荐人作为备用,以备不时之需。

二、推荐人选择的原则

1、推荐人与申请者的关系是直接可信赖的。

所谓直接,是指推荐人与申请者有过较长时间的直接的接触,教过申请者相关课程,指导过申请者项目、研究、论文,是申请者实习期间的直接上司等都属于直接的关系。

这一原则主要是为保证推荐人对申请者的学术背景、个人潜质等拥有一定程度的了解,保证推荐人具备推荐资格,能够对申请者某方面的能力和素质进行评价,增加推荐信的可信度。

所谓可信赖,是指两者的关系可以保证推荐信的公正、客观,是指对于学校来说,推荐人的推荐值不值得信赖。

直接与可信赖必须同时满足,比如申请者的父母,虽然跟申请者的关系是直接的,对申请者也很了解,但是在校方看来,他们对申请者所做出的推荐可能会有所偏袒,也就是无法信赖的。

2、推荐人与申请者的关系与所申请专业相关。

推荐信的目的在于从第三者的角度对学生的专业背景、专业潜质等做出评价,是为校方筛选、录取学生服务的。所以,推荐人与申请者的关系应该与所申请专业相关。

比如,如果选择教过申请者相关课程的老师来写推荐信,那么,选择相对应的专业课的老师就比较好。如果选择指导老师作为推荐人,那么选择指导其进行过与所申专业相对应的专业领域的研究的老师就比较好。

当然,如果跨专业申请,确实找不到那么多所申专业领域的推荐人,也可以选择原专业领域的推荐人,推荐信则应着重体现你的`能力和潜质。

3、在前两者都满足的基础上,推荐人的职位越高越好,影响力越大越好。因为这无疑会增加推荐信的含金量。

比如,如果推荐人是专业领域内权威的专家、在国际上有一定声望,甚至可能与申请学校的教授有着业务来往、私交,那这封推荐信在申请中能起到的作用就是普通的推荐信远不能比的了。

注意:只有在前两者都满足的基础上,第三条才适用,如果只是职位高,比如学校的校长,但是对申请者在校期间的表现并不十分了解,也不建议采用其作为推荐人。

因为推荐人对申请者的评价需要通过具体的事例和细节来展现,美国学校并不会只看推荐人的名誉、声望。唯一的例外情况是,申请者的资源能够强大到,无论你怎么写推荐信的内容,对方都能够签字,这种情况下,也可以考虑选择其做为推荐人。

三、推荐人分类

推荐人大致可以分为两类,即学术推荐人和工作推荐人。

学术推荐人主要包括授课老师、论文指导老师、负责项目(研究、实验等)的老师等。对于专业经历很丰富的申请者来说,建议选取后两者作为推荐人,主要对申请者的学术研究能力,研究潜质等作出评价。

对于专业经历不太丰富的申请者来说,也可以选择其本科阶段的授课老师作为其推荐人。建议选择核心专业课程的授课老师,跨专业的申请者,也可以选择核心基础课程的授课老师作为推荐人。

一般情况下,选择大学后两年的授课老师来写推荐信会更好一些,毕竟在前两年,申请者接触到的课程难度通常不会太高。

也有一部分申请者会选择自己有过接触的一些领域内的一些权威教授来帮自己写推荐信,比如曾经有申请者通过参加某教授的讲座,争取到与教授面对面交流的机会,并在会后主动与教授保持密切联系,向教授请教专业领域内的一些问题,并成功争取到其作为自己的推荐人。

总之,推荐人的选择,也有很大的灵活性,只要有利于向学校展示自身的专业能力和水平,对申请有利,都可以尝试。

工作推荐人主要指申请者实习、工作期间的领导、同事等熟悉申请者实习、工作期间的表现的人。

如果申请者曾经有过在相关行业的大型公司的实践经历,申请项目也比较看重实践运用、就业导向比较强的话,三封推荐信中提交一封工作推荐信对于申请也是很有帮助的。

一般情况下,对于大部分在读申请者来说,可以选择三封学术推荐信,有的学校网站也会明确写明只接受学术推荐信。部分就业为导向的专业或者申请者有特别出彩的实践经历的除外。

对于在职申请者,提交工作推荐信是必要的,因为毕竟你离开学校已经有一段时间了,学校更希望了解你最近的表现。

但是工作推荐信的数量不宜太多,除非申请者有很多很多年的工作经验,可以选择两封工作推荐信以外,都建议申请者选择两封学术推荐信加一封工作推荐信或者三封学术推荐信的组合。尤其是对于PhD申请者,除非你所作的工作是在企业的研发部门从事研究性的工作,否则不宜提交超过一封的工作推荐信。

四、特别提示

1、学术推荐人一般至少要有教授、副教授或者博士学位。一般情况下,不建议选择讲师作为推荐人,特殊情况除外。

2、推荐人的选择应保持一定程度的多元化,争取达到一个从多角度向校方展示申请者的目的。比如,可以选择授课老师、论文指导老师、项目研究负责老师、院系领导、实习(工作)期间的上司等进行合理搭配。

搭配的意义在于:一方面避免推荐信内容无意义的重复,比如如果两封推荐信都是对你的研究能力做评价,这就不可避免地会造成内容的雷同。

另一方面,不同的推荐人能够从不同的角度针对申请者的不同方面的能力和素质进行评价,进行合理地推荐信搭配能够使学校更全面地了解申请者,也能够更好地把申请者的优点和特点都展现出来,这也符合美国学校对diversity 的要求。

3、一般意义上来说,外国教授的推荐信要比本土教授的推荐信含金量高,但是,同时也要考虑外国教授一般情况下都会实话实说,并且不会让申请者看到推荐信内容等因素。

在选择外国人作为推荐人时,一方面要确认他与自己确实有一定程度的了解,并能够对自己某方面的能力和素质做出评价,另一方面,可以从其他渠道了解一下,往年这个推荐人对待推荐信的态度是怎样的,内容是否会乱写,网推是否及时等。
