Dear Colleagues:
In capacity as Professor of Mathematics at Fudan University,I'm writing to recommend Mr. Wang Gesintosyour PhD program in Computer Science. I have known Mr. Wang since his sophomore year of collegeand have acted as his thesis advisor and mentor. In my experience he is a gifted and diligent student and an admirably hard worker.
Wang is an impressive student because he has been forced to overcome the significant challenge of a serious illness during his freshman year. When I first met Wang in my Discrete Math class he did not appear to be anything special to me. While his exam scores were goodthey were not as high as I would now expect of him. What I didn't know then was that due to his illness Wang was attempting to take all of the difficult early mathematics courses at one timeincluding Discrete Mathematics Advanced Mathematics Linear Algebra and Possibilities. While most students found preparing for just one set of these exams difficult Wang was overwhelmed by four of them. But in the end he achieved an impressive score on the final exam which made me conscious of his unusual determination he demonstrates when confronting difficult challenges.
Mr. Wang and I have often talked about a variety of mathematics and computer science concepts and problems. During these discussions I always found him to be delightfully intelligent. Not only does he quickly understand the concepts and problems presented to him he is able to analyze these problems and present solutions. But perhaps most important is that Wang's thinking is intensely rigorous. When looking at any question he carefully scrutinizes it and if he finds any uncertain issues he clears them up immediately. I believe this kind of thought is essential to become an excellent computer programmer.
Serving as his thesis advisorI had a first-hand opportunity to observe the way in which Wang's mind works. In his senor thesis Mr. Wang mainly discussed two challenging questions in regards to″ANN″. In our books in China knowledge of ANN and its uses are very rare. Few people in China have studied this topic and consequently the materials that are available on ANN are limited. Working on this difficult project not only did Mr. Wang rise to the challenge but he went above and beyond the call of duty to analyze his secondary sources and test them for accuracy in practice. In this wayhe found mistakes in the book that we use. His diligence and hard work made me extremely proud of him.
Mr. Wang is an intelligent motivated and industrious individual. Teaching and advising him has been a delightful pleasure. I know that if given the chance to study abroad in America he will arm himself to become a great programmer he dreams of being. He has the intelligence and background to achieve these goals – now all he needs is the opportunity. I ask that you look upon his application favorably and grant him a chance to study in your university.
I got to know XXX in September XXXX when I was her mathematics teacher. Six years later when I had becom#e the director of grade 11, she applied for the internship in my school, working as an assistant grade director under my supervision.
It was amazing to find that the girl who once was introvert and silent turned to be lively and skilled at com#municating with people.
From the respective of two matters made by her, I realized that Ms X has the great talent in the field of teaching management. The first thing was her caring attitude to students in Arts Specially Class who felt inferior because of poor grades on regular courses.
To stimulate their aspiration of learning, she organized to hold a performance half a month after receiving counselors’ and my support, in which all arts student participated.
In this case, those students were more confident after making them feel they were important. Meanwhile, counselors reflected that students were more willing to coordinate their work and more vigorous in classes.
The other thing was her action in dealing with “dumb English” by the means of establishing English Corner.
She would raise a topic in advance, to allow students make some preparations, and in six p.m. of every Friday, she appealed students to speak out freely, by which students’ oral English were improved and learning interest was triggered.
Therefore, I was delighted for her flexible thought and appreciated for her contribution to the teaching career in this school.
Maybe because young people have com#mon words, Ms X developed a favorable relationship with students and received heartening feedbacks. Uncom#monly, she also got along with teachers who were dozens years older her.
The reason was that she was responsible and positive like volunteering to pick out some articles inspiring motivation or interesting stories for teachers.
A particular pleasure is the fact that she has evolved from being an exemplary student into a gifted teaching manager. Through her devotion to students and the school, she became a valued member of the team.
Given her talent, responsibility, and com#munication skills, she would becom#e an outstanding member in your facility.
In a word, during the one year of her internship, Ms X performed excellently, so I thoroughly support her application for admittance into your graduate program of Teaching Management.
Sincerely,
XXX, X, Director of Grade 11

Dear Professor:
I understand that XXX is applying for admission to your Postgraduate Master’s Program, and has requested that I write this letter of recommendation for her.
I have known XXX as a resourceful and goal-oriented individual ever since she attended my Instrumental Analysis course(score:84) in her fourth academic semester. She often raised thought-provoking questions during the course lectures. Thus,it is natural that I like discussing with this young girl and enjoy becoming more familiar with her and her aspirations. In her sixth academic semester, she took my course of Electrochemical Analysis(score:89).The more I get to know her, the more I find she is talented at chemistry. With her outstanding talent and solid background in chemistry, she also did quite well in most of her other courses during her undergraduate study. I feel strongly that XXX’s unusual talents and abilities will stand her in good stead for a quality chemistry education, and your university will provide the best opportunities for her.
While at XXX University, XXX had excellent performances in all subjects of her studies and demonstrated great potential, but she is more than a knowledgable bookworm;she is an outstanding leader. She is not only the President of the Student Union in the College of Chemistry, but also the Minister of Commonweal Department of Students’ Association Union of XXX University. She is adept in speech and debate, which give her great capabilities for expression, abstract reasoning, and cooperation. She also took part in and organised many extracurricular activities, such as “Dream Fly” Party of College of Chemistry and Chemical Knowledge Contest of XXX University.
We at XXX University see an optimistic, highly independent, and easy-going character in XXX, with highly unusual determination. She is not to be defeated by any difficulties. She believes that , with hard work, she can achieve anything she wants. I think her confidence in herself is well grounded in her track record.
Judging by what I know of her, I think XXX is fully qualified to pursue a Master’s degree in your program. Therefore,I recommend her with much enthusiasm and I shall greatly appreciate your favorably consideration for her application for admission.
Sincerely.

国外政府或官方机构不具备人事档案管理的职能,我国的国有机构都有人事处之类的.机构,管理你的档案,我国的私营企业的人也要到国家办的人才交流中心交钱,国家来管理保持你的档案;西方国家的政府没有这方面的功能,任何一个个人他(她)所有的履历、历程,都是由几个私人写的推荐信来构成的;
因此,国外的人在写推荐信的这个人知道自己在写信时是把自己的名声、信用抵押上去的;所以,国外人写推荐信的文风跟我过同学自己写的很不一样;
很遗憾我国中学老师基本上没有亲自执笔写推荐信的,都是学生自己写,以老师的名义发出;我国的学生、家长以老师的名义写的推荐信有时过于吹嘘,讲很多不切实际的话,几乎把自己包装成一个“不需要学习的人”,效果是适得其反;
有的老师的推荐信,实际上是同学写的,经过我修改英语本身没有问题了;但是有的是学生自己写,然后就发了,这样的话国外录取委员会就发现一个奇特的现象:来自这个学校的,比如说一个张老师,他的推荐信有时英文还可以,但是有的时候写得一塌糊涂,还有时更糟糕的是,有50位同学以他的名义发出了推荐信,这50位同学都声称自己的成绩名列班级前三名,结果这个张老师的信用荡然无存;
这样对申请者伤害非常大,中国有一部分老师觉得以这类方式“欺骗”一下老外,学生上了好大学,不算犯规;他们可能不会欺骗国内的大学、家长、教育部门官员,但是他们认为外国人远在天边,实际上这类方式多了以后,严重影响我国中学教育、我国学生的信誉,严重影响我国学生申请的结果;
首先,如果是我们自己起草以老师名义的推荐信时要注意就事论事,不要过分吹嘘,这个没有用,国外的录取委员会都不是傻的,他们很有判断能力,我们很多同学总是低估国外教授的智商,这是错误的,他们对我们其实很了解;
第一个原则,推荐者必须有能力来判断、衡量这个被推荐者;
第二个原则,推荐人必须有机会对被推荐人进行了解;这样我们的很多名人、高管就不起到这个作用;
以国外一般要求你的任课老师和班主任提供推荐信,如果有额外的推荐信的话,我建议大家不要找高级官员,因为社会制度不一样,教育体制不一样,在国外的教育部门、高级官员对大学尚且没有影响力,更不用说找一个中国的高级官员写个推荐信,历史经验证明这些都没有用,再加上国外找很多研究生参与录取初选,这些年轻人都很有反叛精神,一看你有这样的推荐信,经常会发生他就把你拒了;
