Dear _,
This document is being submitted in support of my application for admission into your program.
Born in June 19_, I grew up in Lanzhou, a city that boasts of a history of thousands of years and a cultural heritage that is as colorful as it is old. Few cities, either in China or beyond, can match it in the richness of architectural styles. Stradding the upper Yellow River that sired the Chinese civilization, Lanzhou prides itself in both her past glory laden in the ancient structures on the north bank and her new found prosperity oozing out of the dazzling high-rises in the south. Although, as a child, I was not always able to articulate my admiration for such striking contrast, I constantly beheld the city's landscape in awe. I began to understand, at that young age, that architecture can be a powerful symbol of culture, a people and the spirit of an era.
My first intellectual mentor, one of my parents' best friends, was an artist seasoned in oil painting and photography. She often brought me with her when she traveled, and it was on these trips that her creative mind worked in full gear. I thus observed how human hands could work wonders by recreating the beauty of natural scenery in the form of sketches, paintings and photos. What was more important, I got to know that there are professions of creative work that calls for imagination and craftsmanship.
Fervent with creative art and fascinated with architectural design, I entered in 1992 into the Department of Architecture of Tsinghua University, China's top engineering school, on the strength of my outstanding performance in the highly competitive National University Entrance Examinations.
At Tsinghua, I went through five years of vigorous training and thus acquired exquisite skills in drawing and design. Since I understood from early childhood that inspiration often comes from nature, I traveled far and wide throughout China's vast territory, setting my foot even in outlying Tibet and Xingjiang, both in the country's westernmost interior. These travels allowed me to trace modern China's culture to its different sources, and the variety not only deeply impressed me but also fired my imagination. In my graduation project, Cashi Contemporary Art Museum in Xinjiang, I successfully blended a natural environment into my artistic design by using a system of water circulation to support and sustain the building. As the most significant resource in an agricultural enclave surrounded by desert, water represents hope for both the people and their land. With the water circulation system, the building took on added vitality.
In mid-, I graduated with my B. S. and took a job as a designer with the Beijing-based “company.” My career as an architect thus took off.
Once I have settled into the real world of architectural design, I developed my career path quickly, playing substantial roles in a stream of projects. To date, my most significant responsibility has been to work as a main designer in (a key state) project, in which I led a group of my colleagues in meeting a daunting challenge. In addition to gaining a profound understanding of the technical difficulties necessarily attendant to such large-scale projects, I learned to work effectively within a team that also included my clients and colleagues. The teamwork thus not only strengthened my professional competence at conceptual and technical design but also honed my leadership skills that can be put to good use in other situations. As a result, I now feel even more confident of myself than I was before.
My experience in general, and the six years of frequent traveling in particular, has left an indelible mark on my intellectual development. As I can now readily appreciate a society's cultural, historical and socio-political impact on its architectural styles, I now try to reflect my own cultural and social background in my own designs. These days, I view architecture not just as a career but, more importantly, as an expression of my professional progress, and I fell that it is an view more compatible with Western rather than Chinese pedagogy. In any case, I have already been through China's best school for architectural studies, and I am convince that the further development of my professional qualifications requires more advanced training in a school like yours. I believe that advanced studies under your seasoned guidance will endow me with a broader vision and more profound insights, with which I can make still more contribution to my motherland China.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila
1、学历证书;
2、德语证书;
3、录取通知书;
4、缴费单;
5、体检证明;
6、存款收据;
7、APS证书;
8、护照;

Dear _,
I am interested in pursuing a Geography course at University. Studying Geography will provide me with a better understanding of topical issues that affect the world around us, and also improve my presentational skills and independent learning skills. I am currently studying A-Levels Geography and Drama, which has provided me with a keen interest in current affairs; therefore I am interested in areas such as development and environmental issues
I feel that these subject areas will provide me with a sound background to build a degree
My interests in Drama started early in College where I found that I enjoyed many of the techniques used within Drama. This gave me the confidence to take part in college productions, I have also developed my knowledge of Greek Tragedies, Physical Theatre and Monologues, and whilst studying an A-Level in Performing Arts I have developed my leadership skills and confidence to a mature standard
During my work experience I had the opportunity to work with a professional and extremely dedicated armourer. I used these two weeks to great advantage by broadening my knowledge in a diverse trade, which requires skill and extremely good technique. These two weeks helped me develop many skills such as concentration and independent working, work experience has also provided me with experience in a trade which can be used to fall back on, due to the fact that this is a family trade I therefore I have a platform in which to start up
Within college I play an active role within college and also within my tutor group. I was elected student Council Representative, which has not only developed my communications skills but furthered my organisation skills. Within my tutor group I interact as much as possible by taking part in the tutor football team, and helping out my tutor with international dimensions week, which consists of helping younger students to develop skills they can use in the future. I have also worked with the P.E department by refereeing sports day football
As part of my personal development personal development, I helped in a Year 7 Drama class and used my own skills to help students out with plays, this taught me qualities of leadership such as motivation and patience
My hobbies include a wide range of sports, most notably rugby where I play at club level and county level, I hope to use this sporting background to play in a University team. I also take a great interest in football, golf and occasionally play tennis, I work part time within the College itself working in the Site Team, which has developed my reliability and communications skills
I regard myself to be an extremely friendly and hard working person. I have become very determined and independent as a result of pursuing my A-Levels; and hope this provides a good background for University. I look forward to the challenge of University life and the opportunities that will arise as a result.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
A wise man once said “how dreadful knowledge of the truth can be, when there’s no help in truth.” I think, out of all thoughtful things one can think about, this quotes is unique description of what the depth of Drama and the Performing Arts can do for people. By studying Drama, we can become a variety of people, trapped within one single mind, all trying to be freed and each with their own personality and poison. Humanity has helped Drama so much to produce narrative of such calibre, and characters of such depth and poise – characters, which can be as sweet and innocent, or can take the more disgusting side of what being a human is, being as evil as what thought possible
Performance Art explores the whole range of human emotion and can produce tremendous performances and visual experiences and with Drama, in particular, we can go further than flesh and blood and express ourselves as somebody else and take on this ‘mask’. The most profound thing I have found when studying Drama is that we can become any person in the entire world, and still be us
I have always had a love for the performing arts since I can remember; for there has never really been anything else I have ever wanted to do apart from act. But acting is not just a subject to study people, narratives or social issues – we can discover so many things about ourselves, why we perform a character this way: is it because this person is so much like us? There have been numerous qualities I have discovered about myself while participating in drama. In teaching, I have learn how to really connect with people and help them to explorer what their feelings produce and more notably, how we learn about others, about a single person just by the way they say a monologue
Teaching has been a great experience for me because it has given me the time to evaluate my own performance and teaching skill, learning to become that character just a little but more. This has also been enhanced by the performances I have taken part in, learning to work together in teams to realise the dream of the narration and the vision of the director (for nothing really exists without the vision or image)
While experiencing other aspects of the Performing Arts, I have found that is has increased my performance skill on whole and expended my knowledge on the performance world greatly, Dance, Art and English all focusing on similar issues such as the Commedia dell’arte, Henrik Ibsen, Physical Theatre and Movements and philosophies. These subjects have greatly complemented my time in Drama, and increased my confidence and ability in being a performer. Being involved in 5 consecutive school productions, 2 amateur productions, teaching experience and a student has really influence me concerning the determination I will put into a career in Drama and Acting, and just working with these people and directors have really bettered me in the way I act, see myself and carry on with my life. The Performing Arts is such a brilliant profession to work in, because there is so much opportunity to explore the world
I know that I can offer the performing arts the time, the expense and the spark that it deserves. There is nothing else in world that I would devote more time to than being on the stage or acting in the street, and with the passion and determination to succeed behind me, I will give that spark and flavour that acting and the performing arts is all about. I know I can offer so much, because it is the only profession where, maybe just for one night, I can become someone else and do a damn good job of being that person – and I can easily say that I can offer the world, because performance and acting is my whole world. As well as enjoying Drama, I have also taken a shine to Philosophy and finding the reason for irrationality, and I feel particularly moved in amazement by the work of Bob Fosse and George Orwell for their use of horror, sorrow and murder. And a great interest to the History of Art, because so much of the story of us is portrayed in Art and more so these days it is so unique how Art and Drama work together to produce movement, beauty and conception.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
A senior student at the business school headed by China's tough Prime Minister, I will graduate next year with a diploma to be conferred by the Quebec Association of Certified General Accountants in Canada in the first joint educational program of its kind between China and a foreign country. To build up a great career upon this rare privilege, I am now applying for advanced studies in your quality program, hoping that I can someday become one of China's top accounting experts.
At Tsinghua, the country's most valued cradle of advanced talents that houses my favored School of Business Management, I have been head and shoulders above(远远超出) most of my fellow students in my class of 122. I ranked among the top 2 per cent in macroeconomics, top 3 per cent in microeconomics, top 5 per cent in international finance, and top 2 per cent in international trading. My performance in mathematics has been particularly strong, with my GPA in related courses probably the very best in the class. The CGA diploma requires completion of 12 courses taught in English, of which I have finished eight, with a GPA better than that of most others.
My distinguished academic performance won me the privilege of being chosen as the only Special-Training Student in my class of 122 to join the university's Program for the Gifted. Through this elite program, I participated in a challenging research project headed Professor Chun Xiyang, head of the school's accounting department. The project was aimed at finding the best way to control cost at the North China Petrochemical Corporation, one of the country's best known companies. As part of my research, I studied the corporate management systems in the United States, Japan, Britain and Germany, and analyzed the structure of Chinese companies. By the time I finished my part of the project to Professor Chun's satisfaction, I had not only broadened my knowledge but also acquired the ability, unique among China's undergraduate students, to conduct research independently.
Taking advantage of the university's emphasis on cultivating independent thinking and practical research abilities, I have actively engaged in a variety of research activities. I teamed up with several students to investigate into China's township enterprises and wrote a research paper under the guidance of our professors. With the help of my professor in public finance, I studied the country's taxation system that is designed to divide revenues between central and provincial governments, and I did this in comparison with the taxation regimes of America and France. My article, China's Taxation Reform, analyzed the possible approaches of improving that system. In my third academic year, I wrote The Accounting Structure in Share-holding Enterprises, an article that dealt with the solutions to the problems in the accounting system of the said companies. In my second year, I worked as an intern at China Industrial and Commercial Bank and acquainted myself thereby with the prevalent accounting practices of the country's financial institutions. Such involvement in practical research has added both depth and breadth to my learning of accounting.
Much of my academic achievements can be credited to my solid command of the English, which has allowed me to read international accounting journals with ease. Among my regular readings are Accounting Review, Accountancy, Public Finance Review, and others. I have translated Proposed Statement of Financial Accounting Concepts. My English proficiency is also reflected in the scores I obtained in various English tests such as TOEFL (633, 10/97), GRE general (total 2220, verbal 660, 93%; quantitative 790, 98%; analytical 770, 96%), and GMAT (740, 99%; verbal 40, 92%; quantitative 50, 99%). I am sure that, with such language skills, I can pursue advanced studies in an English-speaking environment.
In recognition of my outstanding academic record, the university has selected me to enter into graduate studies without the usually mandatory admission exams, a privilege given to only a few of the very best students each year. I have, however, decided to turn down the offer. I believe I will be able to lear

Dear _,
I always believe that the opportunities only dawned on those with full preparations. On Nov. 17 this year, I participated in the selective trial of the registered accountants held by China Registered Accountant Association, in which I ranked to the top in the examinations and will be sent to practise in the big international accounting company in foreign country. It is a very competitive trial with over 150 excellent students majoring in accounting as the participators, including those in _ University and _ University. When my friend asked me how I prepared for this contest and got such a good score, I told them that the only thing I did was to keep a smooth heart and full confidence towards the precipitate contest. Actually, for years, I have never stopped making preparations by learning carefully and diligently for the coming of the contest.
Two years ago when I first entered our university, I was selected into the best class in our school for my outstanding score. This class consists of 150 excellent students out of 3000 freshmen that year with the best professors (Including the president of the school, department dean and the doyen professors on every subject) teaching us. Therefore, my view was largely broadened in the nutritious studying atmosphere, where I was deeply influenced by their researching experience and personal charms as well as learning abundant professional knowledge and cultivating my unique ideas. Besides, many of my learning habits and thinking styles came from the study there. Meanwhile however, I also shouldered heavy pressure because we must be the best in such a class under the attention of all the teachers and students in the school. Therefore, I tried to do everything perfectly without missing any small problem. At the end of last year, I happened to find the suggestion collection paper for the “Asset Decrease Accounting Standard” on the website, which was quite different from what I learnt in books. Cherishing the aroused interest, I spent over one month in learning this standard carefully by reading large amount of files and discussing with my teacher for the cognition of the developing process, problems and influence to the registered companies of the Asset Decrease Calculation. Finally, I published my article on the core magazine of “Finance and Accounting”. Besides, I am a girl who liked challenges. On completing my study in the three years, I accepted many challenges without any hesitation. I could get much pleasure when racing with time because I believe that the valuable use of every minute means the success. Therefore, I was very excited to be able to enter the graduate school one year earlier than other students in class taking advantage of my insistent efforts to learn twice as much knowledge as them. Meanwhile, I am very proud that I got the first scholarship in my sophomore year for my excellent score.
In spite of the limited spare time with 5-6 hours on my daily courses, I actively found many opportunities to do the extracurricular work. For example, I asked my teacher for assisting him with his subject and helping him to summarize the files because I am always trying to form my own points by summarizing the knowledge I learnt. I think that study is an active action, which required me to find some opportunities to improve myself independently. Taking advantage of my excellent behavior, I was finally admitted by the professors and participated in the _ Social and Scientific Layout Project: “Research on the Accounting Information Transmission Mechanism based on the Company Management” by Professor _, in which I was mainly responsible for the Comparison of the Statistics Information Transmission Mechanism among the main countries in the world as the assistant of Professor x_ Through the collection and summarization of the hundreds of files, I further improved reading ability from over ten pages of the Chinese files per hour at the beginning to large amount of English files as well as picking up some useful information per hour. Therefore, my abilities in the information seeking and estimation were largely improved.
My campus life is rich and colorful. As the vice president of the Students’Union, who was mainly responsible for the work of Science and Technology Association, I must organize some meaningful extracurricular activities for students with the other members of the Students’ Union like the debates and speech contests etc. In this process, my leadership, organizing and team managing abilities were largely improved. In addition, I was also involved in the work of External Relations Department, which was very difficult and complicated because this department is just similar to the Public Relation Department in the company. It was established mainly to connect with the leaders of the corporations for the fund to our campus activities. It was just the particular work in this department that presented me with a strong communicating ability. Generally, I think that my participation and organization of these extracurricular activities has improved my comprehensive ability, which is very helpful for my future study.

Dear _,
Making an option for an undergraduate specialty is just like making an option for the course of life. It is the greatest joy in life to indulge in the study of the specialty that best suits one‘s taste. The specialty of Economic Information Management specialty is an interdisciplinary faculty that combines the knowledge of computer science, economics and management. It covers three major areas that gallop at the fastest speed and throb synchronically with the pulses of the present-day society. As an interdisciplinary subject, it endeavors to investigate the efficacy of computer application in both economy and management. This perfectly fitted in with my innate quickness of thought and my close concern for reality. For several years in the past, I have experienced many setbacks and frustrations in the process of studying this subject, but I have also experienced the joy, the illumination and the stimulation that it brought me with its rapid development and practical values. Anyway, I will continue to be fascinated by this subject with its endless secrets.
Years of study and research, as well as practical work, have enabled me to develop a superb command of computer technology and its application in management. To me, the subjects on data structure, computer network, target-oriented methods and C++, information systems analysis and designing, trade information and EDI, information economics, industrial enterprise information management, and commercial enterprise information management are the most beautiful flowers in this infinitely beautiful garden of knowledge. They exposed to me a brand-new academic sphere featuring interdependence and common advancement, leaving me completely enamored with the enormous practical value of the computer technology. At present, I have become well versed in many professional skills, including Java Delphi, C / C ++, VB, HTML and JavaScript. In terms of operational system and databanks, I am very skilled in Windows NT, UNIX, MSSQL Server, Sybase and DB2. Due to the nature of the specialty, I must closely follow the latest academic developments, especially in the latest progress of computer technology. I often take an active part in academic meetings and technical training. For example, I was involved in a number of academic events sponsored by CCF Young Computer Scientists & Engineers Forum, which covered the development of Linux technology in China, network safety and multimedia technologies. Recently, I have conducted a comparative study of several popularly-employed servers and my research findings will soon be published in the China Computer Technology Journal. In addition to this research, my graduation thesis is another fruition of my devoted academic endeavors. It deals with IC card technology and its application. It aims to resolve the safety and the encryption technology of IC card as well as the concrete design of IC card machine room controls. In this project, we studied the working principles of IC card that can be read repetitively as well as an IC card reader capable of repeated reading to realize the functions of online fee calculation through IC card reading technologies. The research findings were subsequently employed in the management of our university‘s own computer center. The judges of my thesis unanimously rated the thesis as thoroughgoing and exhaustive, replete with original concepts, and with very rich values both in theory and in practice.
My interest and industry were well rewarded with outstanding scholastic results. My fellow students were all very brilliant and I was far behind them when I first entered the university. But my dauntless character drove me upward. I later caught up with them and ranked fourth in a class of 46 students. My GPA was 3.4 in the four years of study and was 3.5 in the latter two, showing an upward progress. I scored for four times the highest-grade scholarships and was rated as an outstanding graduate, something very rare in a class. My thesis was also graded “outstanding.”
At the stage of undergraduate studies, I was engaged in specific software development related to my specialty. I realized some financial modules with Visual Foxpro in the E-commerce modular education software. Upon graduation from university, I worked at the Product R&D Department of a very famous computer company mainly involved in the research and development of net banks and online payment. The projects in which I participated at this company include: the R&D of online banking projects of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and the Agricultural Bank of China, and the R&D of intermediate payment products bys Globalset, QSI and Trintech. In the ISO9000 software quality confirmation work, I was responsible for managing and researching the software quality system standards. In the annual China International Financial Exhibition, I was responsible for organizing and planning. During this period of my work, I have become acquainted with many leading techniques, including the demand analysis, systems designing, software designing and project management for ISO90000 standardized techniques related to the Java Enterprise grade and to Network Safety. My performance has received highly positive comments from my superior.
Nevertheless, in the actual working experience, I have become increasingly aware of the weaknesses of the relevant computer technology in China. In the field of E-commerce, China‘s footsteps of development have been withheld mainly because China has neither E-commerce solutions suitable for its particular conditions nor advanced software and network technologies. There is a big gap between China and advanced western countries in software quality because China has not paid adequate attention to this issue. China has not yet developed relevant intellectual technology or established a complete set of reliable mechanisms with regard to the implementation of software designing, testing and maintenance. I have developed an adequate command of the relevant skills in those aspects and I have always maintained an intense interest in them. I hope that by seeking advanced studies abroad, I will succeed in finding a suitable E-commerce solution for China‘s emerging industry in this field. On the other hand, I will be equipped to make contributions to the development of China‘s software sector, especially to help improve its software quality.
A careful investigation has informed me that your university is a leading university featuring an educational system and research atmosphere far more advanced than those in China and boasting a number of accomplished professors whose academic attainments are also far beyond the reach of their Chinese counterparts. It is my belief that I will acquire the most advanced knowledge in the field of E-commerce and software quality, the kind of knowledge that I exploit to promote the development of China‘s own expertise. I am soberly aware that no one can accomplish tremendous achievements in all fields, but as long as I orientate myself to one field for which I have accumulated considerable expertise and constructed a solid groundwork, I am sure that I will attain a fulfilling career out of it.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
“Women aren’t suited for such hard subjects,” my friend Seung-woo told me with a smug smile. Seung-woo didn’t think that mathematics was a field for women. Although he was my age and wasn’t tied down by most traditional beliefs, he believed that only men could be true mathematicians. The majority of people in my country, South Korea, believe the gender stereotype that women are inherently inferior to men in mathematics. I strongly disagree with this outdated notion. Women are just as capable of outstanding mathematical achievement as men, and I am determined to help disprove gender stereotypes through my example.
Mathematics has always given me a deep sense of satisfaction. Even in elementary school, I was attracted to the precision and logic inherent in mathematical formulas. I devoured as much mathematical information as I could, collecting theorems of mathematicians such as Gauss and Euclid like other students collected stamps. I had the opportunity to test my skills and knowledge in high school, when I competed in several national math competitions, including the Korea Mathematical Olympiad. My strong showing in these venues, along with my top math grades and perfect math score on the Korean SAT, bolstered my confidence in my abilities. I was proud to prove to others that I was capable of performing at the highest levels.
Despite my strong interest and achievement in mathematics, it has been difficult for me to realize my potential due to the Korean educational system, which emphasizes cramming for tests instead of critical understanding. More significantly, Korean social biases against women in the fields of math and science have discouraged me from pursuing my love of mathematics. Thus, I want to study in the United States, where I will be able follow my dream without these constraints. For about a year, I have taken English language courses at a university in Washington, D.C., where I have gained a glimpse of American academic life from the inside. I am very impressed by American students’ devotion to their studies and the system’s ability to support each student’s goals. I am therefore especially interested in attending Boston College, which, in addition to offering outstanding math and science courses, is renowned for its emphasis on cultivating students’ full development, or “cura personalis.” At Boston College, I will be able to focus on my goal of becoming an excellent mathematician.
I am determined to succeed, but I know that I must overcome many challenges. Sometimes, when I feel discouraged by the obstacles I face as a Korean woman in mathematics, I imagine what my life will be like ten years from now. Armed with a Boston College degree, I will visit my old friend Seung-woo. We will have corresponded over the years, so he’ll already know about the many mathematics articles published in my name, and he will be well aware of the international acclaim they received. I will savor the day when Seung-woo admits that I was correct in believing that I could succeed as a mathematician. I will be proud to know that partly due to my achievements, the door to increased opportunities for women in math and science has swung open a little bit wider.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
As a double major in Anthropology and Psychology at the University of Rhode Island, I have gained a strong background in both fields. My background is especially strong in physical anthropology, my primary field of interest. Physical anthropology consumes my life; I do not study it because I find it somewhat interesting but because I am devoted to it; I want to make it my life. In addition to maintaining a high GPA throughout my college career, and making the Dean's list several times, I have also worked hard as a supervisor at Brooks Pharmacy for the past five years. Working my own way through college not only demonstrates my determination to gaining a high quality education and the seriousness with which I treat academics, but also attests to my leadership ability, maturity, and responsibility, both as a supervisor and as a student at the University of Rhode Island.
My primary goal in applying to your graduate program is to prepare myself for a career in forensic anthropology. Interested in furthering the current body of research and in improving techniques used in the identification of human remains, I am very committed to pursuing forensic anthropology and believe your graduate program in anthropology will provide me with an excellent foundation in the area of physical and forensic anthropology. With a Master's degree and Ph.D., I will be well prepared to lead a very promising career. While I have no doubt that the program will push me to my limits, I am confident that I can face the rigorous challenges posed by graduate study and thrive under the demanding environment that advanced studies entail.
From my transcripts, you will see that not only am I a well-balanced student, I actually thrive in rigorous, upper level courses, courses akin to graduate-level courses. Armed with the confidence that I can excel at difficult courses, I believe I can achieve the highest level of success and satisfaction by taking the most demanding graduate program available.
In addition to my ability to excel in the classroom, I have demonstrated a proficiency in all aspects of conducting research. Research has become a fundamental part of my college career, and I hope it will become the primary component of my future. As a sophomore at the University of Rhode Island, I designed a research project entitled “Grooming and Affiliative Behavior in Three Species of Non-Human Primates” under the guidance of Dr. Su Boatright Horowitz in the Psychology Department at URI. My research proposal gained approval from the Institutional Care and Use Committee at URI and at the Roger William Park and Zoo where the three species of non-human primates (Gibbons, Sakis, and Lemurs) included in my study are kept. In addition to writing a successful research proposal, I also wrote and received a small funds grant from the University of Rhode Island in order to conduct my research. By being intimately involved in every aspect of research, from proposal and grant writing to data collection and analysis, I have learned what it takes to be a researcher, but more than that, I have learned how fulfilling and interesting research can be.
In the spring of , I will be presenting my results at a poster presentation at the University of Rhode Island, and am planning to eventually publish my findings. Not only has this experience shown me that I am capable of excelling in conducting research, but it has also allowed me to develop a love for the hands on learning that is so crucial to successful research. In my final semester at URI, I will be participating in an ongoing research project concerning brain function and attention span under the direction of Dr. Dominic Valentino, a professor in the psychology department at URI. This project will undoubtedly further advance my academic skills and reinforce my passion for research.
Physical anthropology is more than just my primary area of education; it has also become my hobby and lifestyle. The questions posed and answered via the study of physical anthropology have fascinated me for a very long time and have stimulated me to ask and seek to answer further questions. With my mind set on the very specific goal of preparing myself as excellently as possible for a future in the field of forensic anthropology, I am fully confident that, with the ability to pursue my education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I will not only be able to fulfill my dream, but to contribute substantially to the university as well.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
I have chosen the courses listed because I feel that these will benefit me most in my goal to become a primary school teacher.
After experiencing the BA (Hons.) Performance: Theatre at Saint Johns College, York, I decided it was not the course I wanted to do, and that a Primary Education degree would be a better preparation for teaching rather than a one year PGCE course. I have always held aspirations to become a teacher, specifically in the primary sector. Since , I have held voluntary work experience placements at Holbrook Primary School, amounting to two and a half terms work in total.
After withdrawing from York, I decided to take the opportunity to extend my experience in schools on a voluntary basis at a local Special School (Beacon Hill Special School, Ipswich). This resulted in my being offered a full-time paid position as a Special Support Assistant. I have found myself inspired by the challenge of encouraging these young people to realise their potential and this has further cemented my decision to become a teacher. I have a particular interest in drama. During High School I was a member of the Wolsey Youth Theatre in Ipswich. This involved me in various productions; The Railway Children, Watership Down, A Christmas Carol, and Roald Dahls Boy. I also participated in High School productions. I think that these skills are very important, because I have already found that drama can be a useful educational tool, especially in the early stages of learning.
I have completed my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, which I found a great challenge, but very rewarding. I also hold Grade 5 in Trombone, Grade 1 cornet, and Award 6 in trampolining.

Dear _,
As long ago as I can remember I have always been fascinated by the natural world. That childish fascination has not left me but deepened over the years. This interest has led me to my love of biology, ecology, animal behavior and evolution.
Following my graduation from High School I studied Biological Sciences for two years at the Catholic University of Chile in Santiago. From March to November I was obliged to take a break from my studies at university as my father was moving from the city to a more remote rural area. While helping my father I was able to work closely with birds of prey among others and I was successful in breeding the endangered chinchillas. During my time away from university I continued to deepen my knowledge of my subject and studied evolutionary thinking and the biological basis of behavior. I also worked for a brief time as a translator which made me think that perhaps my English was good enough o complete my studies in an English speaking country.
Since coming to Oxford and studying at OLT I have improved my written English a great deal. I am a member of The Natural History Museum (London) and recently attended a course called “The History of Evolution.” The course was organized by Birkbeck Collegeand took place at the Natural History Museum in London each Wednesday. The course has been fascinating and has served to confirm my suspicion that the more I learn of this subject the more I want to know.
I am hopeful that my previous studies in Santiago, my maturity and my experience in this field will allow me to enter the second year of an undergraduate programme in the UK. After completing my undergraduate it is my wish to continue studying at postgraduate level and ultimately conduct my own research in this area.
My other academic interests include Paleoanthropology, and the history and development of science. I am most interested in the writings of Darwin and Thomas and Henry Huxley.
I am keen on fitness training, horse riding, trekking and diving. I am most interested in all outdoor pursuits. I am also keen to develop my newly found skills in classical singing and dance.
I realize that as a non-native student I will be required to work harder than my contemporaries and I am prepared to do that. I have a cheerful and open-minded disposition and look forward to sharing and exploring new ideas.
I hope my application will be considered favorably.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
I wish to study Biology because of my enthusiasm for the environment and my fascination with how living organisms work, particularly animals. I enjoy studying creatures at a cellular level as well as on a large scale, such as their ecosystem. It is this variation of perspective that makes Biology an appealing subject to further my knowledge at University.
I recently attended lectures on biodiversity and conservation at the University Museum of Natural History in Oxford. This aided my understanding of different topics, including why our rainforests are so important and the role of specific invertebrates in our global environment.
I currently own a shared website on which my AS Biology notes can be viewed. This was set up in order to improve my skills in computer and data handling, as well as share information with other students who are studying Biology at A-level. I am hoping it will also make the subject more interactive and exciting for people who visit the site.
I keep up to date with new developments and ideas by reading around my school subjects in books and in journals such as New Scientist. Leisure activities, including visits to Cotswold Wildlife Park, the Natural History Museum and the Body World Exhibition, have proved valuable in expanding my biological knowledge, as has watching wildlife documentaries on television.
I have a part time job at Summertown Library, which has been an important experience for me. It has not only made me more independent, but has taught me the importance of decision-making, how to work as a team and how to handle responsibility. I take pleasure in reading novels, spending time with friends, drawing, painting and walking in the countryside.
Yours sincerely,

Dear xxx,
Brought up in a shabby and cramped small apartment, I was fascinated in mychildhood by the exquisite houses and condominiums I watched on TV in imagesthat had been shot in the developed countries. It has since been my dream tobuild up in China the same kind of quality human habitat. I believe that thisdream can come true if I get to undertake advanced studies in architecture atyour university.
I am now erecting fundamental building blocks towards the realization of mydream at the Harbin Institute of Technology (known as HIT), from which I amscheduled to graduate next year. This elite institution accepted me in 1995 inrecognition of my strong performance in the National University EntranceExaminations, held once every year nationwide to screen high school graduatesfor higher education. Here, I have received vigorous training in structureengineering, an area of study that is essential to the country's frenziedconstruction industry.
Deeply in love with my chosen area of studies, I have turned my mind intoan engine of creativity during three years of disciplined learning. Courses ofmy major, particularly structure mechanics, architecture material, and survey ofengineering, fascinate me so much that I am sometimes completely enthralled instudying them. Looking now at the reinforced concrete structures around me, Inot only detect the configuration inside easily but also arrive at somepreliminary assessment of its strengths and weaknesses quickly. Everything thatcomes into my sight presents itself in the framework of some form of structure.Carefully groomed as the only child in my family, I cannot stand being thesecond best in any group and situation, especially when it comes to a contest ofintellectual caliber. At HIT, I beat the odds and excelled all most of my fellowstudents in academic studies, making myself the undisputed academic leader ofthe class. Students and faculty alike are so accustomed to my academicexcellence that everybody would be surprised in class if I happen not to be ableto answer a question better than others even once. My motto is : one eithercomes out the first, or he is a failure. The university has awarded me a stringof scholarships and other accolades in praise of my academic achievements.
But I am no bookworm. In fact, I am constantly engaged in a host ofextracurricular activities, for which I have been conferred a SpecialCommendation for Participation in Social Activities. I have run and won theposition of monitor in my class during my first semester, which made me anatural student leader. Active on campus, I was then appointed the recreationofficer of the Student Association, in charge of organizing entertainment andother recreational events for the benefit of the students. I now also serve asthe president of the Society of Student Architects and Engineers. Suchinvolvement in the student affairs has tempered my skills in leadership, organization and communication. But more importantly, it has broadened myhorizon and deepened my insights in terms of what constitutes beauty, grace andstrength, which I believe will always help me in my engineering designs.
I would like to mention here my passion for a uniquely oriental sportcalled weiqi, known as the go in the English parlance. An intricate chess game,it is challenging to even the best and brightest minds. One usually has to be afull-time player to play it well. Not to be daunted, I not only joined the WeiqiClub on campus but also taken part in a national contest, in which I won the12th place and the HIT team I led won the 3rd place. My achievement in the weiqisport testifies to my superior mental power and intellectualresourcefulness.
To tap fully into my intellectual resources, I would like to take up thegreater challenges of helping to design my country's skylines in the 21stcentury. For that, I need better training that what I have received. An Americaneducation will expose mw to new perspectives and endow me with new inspirations. When I get to combine my Chinese perspectives with those of the West, I shouldhave no trouble fulfilling my ambition of cutting one of the best structureengineers in the world. With that, I want to design and build the most beautifulstructures in China.
To ensure both my future and that of my country's construction industry, Isincerely hope that I could be admitted into your university. I am confidentthat, if I can be lucky enough to study under your seasoned guidance and withyour kind financial assistance, many people in China will never have to endurethe kind of shabby and inconvenient apartments that I endured as a child.
Yours sincerely,
The most important element of my classroom, my office, or my home is apersonal relationship. I have figured this out on examination of my activitiesin high school (youth group regional president), college (telephone crisiscounselor, resident advisor), or profession (teacher). As a teacher I made apoint of getting to know every student in my classes personally. It quicklybecame my experience that students were more willing to learn, work, and excelwhen they were appreciated as individuals and when they knew that the adult inthe classroom genuinely liked them.
After a few years' experience teaching seniors, I accepted a teaching job atthe middle school with the freshman class that had just learned they would notphysically be moving to the high school. How would I motivate and get to knowthese kids? Everything that I had ever heard about or remembered about 9th grademade me want to turn and run. But what convinced me to take this job wastechnology. In my interview I learned that instead of the library, I was to usethe Internet (the what?). I was told that I would receive a laptop computer(aren't those the things that people with “real” jobs used?) and that the kidscould teach me anything I needed to know.
Computers became my thing. Immediately I began to learn how to surf theInternet from 8th and 9th graders (Sanj and Judy said I was teachers' pet). Mykids opened up and set aside their raging adolescence to use technology to helpme and help each other. As the year with the freshmen continued, I wasoverjoyed. First, my kids and I had the best rapport in years (gosh Miss Glazer, are all of your PowerPoint slides gonna look the same?). Second, my creativityin teaching increased as new doors were opened to me and in turn to my students(conspiracy takes on a whole new meaning when the Internet is your primarysource). Third, I was learning new and exciting things. I had finally found acombination of skills that affected my students in such a positive way that Iknew I had to share my findings.
I have since taken my computer knowledge, instructional design ideas, plus myemphasis on personal relationships and applied it to teachers and students in mydistrict and other districts in the North Texas area.
Through the Learning, Design, and Technology program at Stanford University Ihope to continue on the route that started for me at the middle school. I knowthat I will learn new things and have an opportunity to apply them toeducational settings. I also know that I will be able to establish relationshipswith colleagues, professors, and other students. Although a master's degree isthe short term goal, I believe that my long term goal remains the same as when Ibegan using technology in my classroom three years ago: to see students bettereducated through a curriculum infused with technology by teachers who do notlose sight of the personal relationships that benefit all kids.
This long-term goal may be achieved by working in a single school, a schooldistrict, or an educational center. It may be reached by teaching new teacherson the university level, by instructing at-risk students in a countyafter-school program, or by designing a terrific new classroom model andimplementing it through a regional education lab with a grant from the U.S.Department of Education.
Whatever the job, my aim remains the same and as it did years ago with myfreshmen, I feel certain that I will use any situation to fulfill my goal tobenefit students.
