I”ll never forget the day I met her and her glowing personality. It was the beginning of my senior year of high school. I had that typical senior attitude - I was anxious, excited, a little on the proud side. Fortunately, my arrogance was overcome the moment I met Sarah in my computer class on the first day of school. There was just something about her. It was only ten minutes of initial small talk that endeared Sarah to my heart. She liked basketball. Basketball was one of the highlights of my childhood, and our slightly weak team was always thrilled to welcome new players.

She was taller than me by a couple of inches, and my five-foot-seven frame was unfortunately the tallest on our team. Each practice, as we worked together toward our common goal, we became closer. She was always so encouraging and positive; it seemed like nothing could get her down.

I remember vividly an early tournament we attended that December. We were playing a team that was tough. They had been our rivals throughout my basketball years. The game went back and forth, and victory was up for grabs. However, it looked like our team would not pull through. Three of our starters had fouled out, and we were falling behind until Sarah entered the game with great enthusiasm. She played well, but it was her attitude that helped us the most. ”We“re going to win this!” I remember her saying. And we did! After that game, I remember admiring Sarah“s determination to succeed and her powerful encouragement. She seemed to be fearless of any obstacle she might have to face.

Unfortunately, in only a matter of weeks, she would have to face a life-changing one. Sarah was involved in a terrible car accident on her way to school. During a bad snowstorm, her family”s van skidded off the road, and Sarah was thrown several feet onto the pavement. Her major injuries included a crushed vertebrae in her neck and a bruised spine. For a day or two, no one knew if she would survive. Then the doctors told her that she would never walk again.

As soon as I heard the tragic news, my heart sank. Why did this happen to someone like Sarah? My spirits were instantly lifted, however, as I watched classmates, friends and teachers earnestly praying for Sarah“s recovery. It wasn”t until a few weeks later when a couple of my friends and I visited Sarah in the hospital that I realized the extent of her positive attitude. She had impacted her family, friends, our basketball team and even the nurses with her faith in God and her strong will to recover completely. Despite the doctor“s negative prognosis, Sarah remained calm and determined. Her faith never wavered, even though those of us who loved her most doubted that walking would ever be in her future. Sarah put herself 100 percent into getting better and walking on her own. When she wasn”t doing painful rehabilitation exercises, she was either spreading her kindness to others or praying.

It wasn“t long before Sarah was indeed walking again. She showed the same strength and devotion toward getting better as she did each time she walked onto the basketball court. She isn”t playing basketball yet, but I don“t doubt that she will be amazing us once again. Sometimes just believing can make anything possible.

[AUTHOR”S NOTE: Sarah now attends a Christian college in southern Florida. The last time I saw her was at a varsity basketball game at our former high school. Why and how I got myself into this situation is still unclear to me. A lady friend, a quite good looking lady friend, (okay, okay, so I do know why and how I got myself into this situation) asked me to check her two cats while she was out of town for several days. Cats like their independence, they never listen to you and they won“t come to you if you call them. They are lazy, enjoy sleeping all day and staying out all night. If they drank beer and watched sports on television then they would be just like most of the men that these women have dated in their lives. Yet they LOVE their cats. Many single women I know have cats. They never seem to have just one cat, they usually have at least two cats. Why? So the cats will have company when the woman is away. I never did understand why a cat, an animal that is very independent, would need or even want company when its owner is away. I would think that most cats are probably happy when their owner is away. They finally have got the entire place to themselves. However many women I know insist on having a second cat to keep the first cat company. All of these women are single. I also know of one woman who owns seven cats. She is also single. I believe it is because she owns seven cats.

Day One Of My Cat-Sitting Adventure

I arrived at my lady friend”s house at 11a.m. and found a note instructing me what to do. “Check food”. The food is A-OK. “Check Water”. Well, the water dish was a little low so I“ll add some water. However the note instructed me to ”ONLY GIVE THEM BOTTLED WATER WHICH IS IN THE REFRIGERATOR“! I thought to myself, ”Bottled water? The cats only drink bottled water?“ When I visit my lady friend and ask for water, she gives me tap water. I may have to re-evaluate my friendship with this lady friend. I filled the cats” water dish with the aforementioned bottled water. I read the rest of the instructions she had left for me. The note went on saying, “poopy bags are in the flowered green fabric holder hanging off the metal rack beside the litter box.” Yes, you read me right, she wrote, “poopy bags.” I REALLY have to re-evaluate my friendship with this woman.

Now it is time to give Lucas, the male cat, his medicine. I was instructed to hide the pill inside some veggie cheese. Yes, the cat likes veggie cheese, made from soy. Apparently Lucas is a bottled water drinking, vegetarian cat. I did as instructed and put the pill inside the veggie cheese. The cat not only ate all of the veggie cheese, he also somehow managed to eat around the pill. All of the veggie cheese was gone yet the pill remained. I now must think of a “Plan B.”

I decided to hide the pill in a piece of turkey. What the heck? I could not have any worse luck, could I? Lucas ate the turkey and once again managed to eat around the pill. One thing was certain. Lucas is not a vegetarian. I next attempted to hide the pill in some tuna. Albacore, actually. Again, Lucas ate all of the tuna and left the pill. Another thing was certain. Lucas likes to eat.

I then remembered my lady friend saying that I could hide the pill inside a cat snack treat. Aha! The old hiding the pill in a cat snack treat routine. I proceeded to find the cat treats. There were “Grilled Yellowfin Tuna Flavored Treats” and “Shrimp and Crab Medley Flavored Treats” and “Oven Roasted Breast of Chicken Flavored Treats” and “Hearty Beef Flavored Treats” and “Salmon Flavored Treats.” These cats eat better than most people. I decided to first try the “Whiskas Temptations Salmon Flavored Treats.” Why? Because on the package it read, “What Cats Want”. That was good enough for me. Unfortunately it was not what this cat wanted. I put the pill in each of the treats and Lucas would not go near any of the them. One more thing was certain. Lucas was full. I now must wait until he gets hungry again. I had not thought that this would be an all day event.

While waiting for Lucas to get hungry again I thought I would make an attempt to put the Neosporin on his sore. This went better than expected. I accomplished this task in a mere 45 minutes and I successfully managed not to bleed on any of my friend“s furniture as I ran to the bathroom to cleanse my multiple scratch wounds. Although Lucas may not hold a high regard for Neosporin, I have a new found appreciation for it.

Afterwards I noticed Lucas licking the Neosporin off of his sore. My first thought was, ”Well, that was a complete waste of time and blood!“ Then I got an idea. I”ll put some Neosporin on his pill. He seems to like the taste of Neosporin. And you know what? IT DID NOT WORK EITHER! So much for shouting with glee and becoming rich off of my idea for a “Neosporin Flavored Cat Treat”.

I looked at my watch. It was almost 2 o“clock. This unsuccessful ordeal had taken almost 3 hours! And I am supposed to do this twice a day for the next four days. Yet one more thing was certain. I must come up with a ”PLAN C“.

Knowing that I had made a valid attempt made it easier to implement ”Plan C“. Because of ”Plan C“, day two, three, and four of my cat-sitting adventure went smoothly. My lady friend arrived home late on day four, none the wiser, thanking me again and again for looking after her beloved cats. What was ”Plan C“? Well, ”Plan C“ was a simple plan. I figured that since Lucas was required to take 2 pills a day for 4 days then that would equate to 8 pills. (Thank God for calculators!) I took 8 pills out of the bottle and threw them in the garbage. I used the Neosporin on my own wounds thus making it look like I used it on Lucas. I did not bother going over to her house to check on the cats at ALL on day 2 or 3. I went over just on day 4 to change the water and litter box in order to make it appear like I did everything she wanted me to do. You may be asking yourselves, ”Doesn“t he feel any sense of guilt for his deceitful ways?” The answer is, “No!”. Well, maybe someday I will, after my wounds heal and the scars fade away. I did not want to implement “Plan C” but I had no other choice. I could not afford to waste several hours of my valuable time along with losing a pint of blood each day. Not when there are “Friends” rerurns to watch on television. Besides, that will teach her to give me tap water!

我的猫保姆经历

到现在我还是不明白我是为什么以及是怎样卷入这件事情的。一个女性朋友、一个长得很好看的女性朋友，(好啦!好啦!不要再嘲笑我啦!我现在知道自己是怎样卷进来的啦!)问我能不能在她不在的时候帮她照看一下她的两只猫。我说：“当然可以。” 我想，“帮她看看猫有什么难的呢?”她走之前对我说有只猫因为皮肤干燥问题在进行涂药治疗。没错，她是说干燥皮肤，我当时想，“饶了我吧!”但是我没说什么，因为她我的朋友，而且我也说过，她长得很漂亮。其中一只猫每天要吃两个药片，并且要给它涂抗生素软膏以止痛。“没问题!”我自作聪明地答应下来。

首先，我从来不明白，也可能永远也无法理解女人，以及女人对她们猫的迷恋。因为猫是喜欢独立的，它们从不听主人的话，主人叫它时它也不会应声跑过来。它们天性懒惰，喜欢成天睡觉，整晚呆在外面。如果它们也喝啤酒、看电视体育赛事，那它们就跟这些女士们一生中所约会的大多数男人没什么两样了。但她们还是喜欢她们的猫。我所认识的许多单身女性都养猫。而且看起来她们从不只养一只猫，她们至少有两只或两只以上。为什么?因为在她们外出时猫才有伴! 我从来都无法理解，为什么一只猫，一个惯于独立的动物，会在它主人不在的时候需要或喜欢一个伴呢?我认为大多数的猫在它们的主人不在时可能都挺高兴。它们终于可以享受所有地方了。但是我认识的许多女士坚持要再养一只猫来给另一只猫作伴。所有这些女士都是单身。我还认识一个养了七只猫的女士，她也单身，我认为她单身正是由于她养了七只猫的缘故。

第一天做猫保姆的经历

我在上午11点时到了我的那位女性朋友家，看到了她留给我的一张纸条，上面写着我该怎么做。“检查食物。”食物没有问题;“检查水”，嗯，水少了点，我得加点水。但是纸条上叫我只能给“放在冰箱里的罐装水”。我想：“罐装水?猫只喝罐装水?” 我到她家向她要水喝时，她只给我自来水喝。看来我得重新考虑一下我与这位朋友的关系。我用上面提到的水加満了猫的水碟。我看了看她给我说明的其他注意事项。上面写着：“猫粪袋放在有花饰的绿色布袋里，绿色布袋挂在垃圾箱旁的铁钩子上。”是的，你也看清楚了，她写的是“猫粪袋”，我真得再衡量一下我与她的友谊了!

现在到了给那只叫卢卡斯的公猫吃药的时候了。她提醒我将药片藏在素食干酪里面。是的，猫喜欢吃由大豆做的素食干酪。看来卢卡斯是只只喝罐装水、只吃素食干酪的.猫。我照章办事，将药片混在素食干酪里面。那猫很快吃光了所有的干酪，它还很有技巧地绕着药片吃。结果所有的干酪都吃光了，药片却还在。看来我必须想出另一个B计划出来。

我决定将药片藏在火鸡肉里面。也不知道是怎么回事，我就是那么倒霉!卢卡斯还是绕着药片吃完了所有的火鸡肉。这只说明了一件事——卢卡斯根本不是个素食主义者。接着我又将药片藏在金枪鱼里，其实是青花鱼。卢卡斯再次吃光了所有的鱼而留下了药片。这说明了另一件事——卢卡斯很贪吃。

这时我想起我的朋友曾经说过可以将药片藏在猫的零食里面，哈哈!又是捉迷藏的老一套!我于是去翻找那些猫零食，果然是五花八门，有烤黄鳍金枪鱼点心、小虾蟹肉味点心、炉烤鸡胸味点心、牛肉味点心和鲑鱼味点心。这些猫比大多数的人吃得还好。我决定先试试“好吃放不下”的鲑鱼味点心。为什么?因为包装上写着“猫真正喜欢的”。那对我来说这就够了。但不幸的是它并不是这里的猫真正喜欢的。我把药片放在每一个点心里，但卢卡斯却碰也没碰它们一下。这又说明了一件事——卢卡斯已经吃饱了!我现在只能等到它想再吃东西的时候再说了。我根本没想到照看猫要花掉我整整一天的时间。

在等着卢卡斯感到饥饿以前，我想我可以试着给它涂些抗生素软膏。这比我想象的容易多啦!我只用了不到45分钟就完成了，卢卡斯也没忘记在我身上留下多处的抓痕，我为此不得不急匆匆地冲向卫生间冲洗伤口，并不让伤口的鲜血掉在我朋友的家具上。尽管卢卡斯不怎么爱用抗生素软膏，我却觉得它很管用。

不久我就发现卢卡斯把涂在它身上的抗生素软膏一点点地舔了下来。我的第一反应就是：“啊?我的时间和鲜血算是全白费了!” 突然我想到了一个新主意，那就是把一些抗生素软膏涂在药片上，看起来它有点喜欢抗生素软膏的味道。结果怎么样呢?还是没戏! 枉我一片苦心才想出这个“抗生素软膏味猫点心”，开始时我还开心得大喊大叫，我真是受够了!

我看了看表，已近下午2点。这个失败的试验居然耗掉我3个小时!而这些事情在接下来的4天里我却要每天重复两次。看来我必须制订出一个“C计划”出来不可了!

有了第一次的实践经验实施“C计划”就容易多了。由于“C计划”的缘故，我第二、第三和第四天照看猫的工作进行得非常顺利。我朋友在第四天很晚时才回来，不用说，一遍又一遍地感谢我对她的心爱的猫的照顾。我的“C计划”到底是怎么回事呢?唔，“C计划”其实很简单。卢卡斯每天吃两片药，连吃四天那一共是8片。(感谢上帝!计算器帮了我很大的忙!)我从瓶子里拿出了8片药片并把它们扔进了垃圾箱里，我还把抗生素软膏涂在自己被抓伤的手上，这样看起来就好象用在了卢卡斯身上一样。第二天和第三天我根本就没去她家看她的那些猫，我只是第四天去查了查水和那小碟子，这样看起来就好象我每天都按她的吩咐做了的样子。你可能会问：“他难道不为自己的欺骗行为感到愧疚吗?”答案是：“不!”嗯，或许某天我会觉得愧疚，那要等到我的伤痊愈及疤痕消除后。我本不想执行所谓的“C计划”，但实在没有办法。我不能每天浪费好几个小时的宝贵时间，并且每天流下那么些血。起码在电视还在播放《六人行》的时候是不行的。另外，这也算是她让我喝自来水的报应! Isn't it amazing how one person, sharing one idea, at the right time and place can change the course of your life's history? This is certainly what happened in my life. When I was 14, I was hitchhiking from Houston, Texas, through El Paso on my way to California. I was following my dream, journeying with the sun. I was a high school dropout with learning disabilities and was set on surfing the biggest waves in the world, first in California and then in Hawaii, where I would later live.

Upon reaching downtown El Paso, I met an old man, a bum, on the street corner. He saw me walking, stopped me and questioned me as I passed by. He asked me if I was running away from home, I suppose because I looked so young. I told him, “Not exactly, sir,” since my father had given me a ride to the freeway in Houston and given me his blessings while saying, “It is important to follow your dream and what is in your heart. Son. ”

The bum then asked me if he could buy me a cup of coffee. I told him, “No, sir, but a soda would be great.” We walked to a corner malt shop and sat down on a couple of swiveling stools while we enjoyed our drinks.

After conversing for a few minutes, the friendly bum told me to follow him. He told me that he had something grand to show me and share with me. We walked a couple of blocks until we came upon the downtown El Paso Public Library.

We walked up its front steps and stopped at a small information stand. Here the bum spoke to a smiling old lady, and asked her if she would be kind enough to watch my things for a moment while he and I entered the library. I left my belongings with this grandmotherly figure and entered into this magnificent hall of learning.

The bum first led me to a table and asked me to sit down and wait for a moment while he looked for something special amongst the shelves. A few moments later, he returned with a couple of old books under his arms and set them on the table. He then sat down beside me and spoke. He started with a few statements that were very special and that changed my life. He said, “There are two things that I want to teach you, young man, and they are these:

”Number one is to never judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you. “He followed with, ”I ll bet you think I m a bum, don t you, young man?“

I said, ”Well, uh, yes, I guess so, sir. “

”Well, young man, I've got a little surprise for you. I am one of the wealthiest men in the world. I have probably everything any man could ever want. I originally come from the Northeast and have all the things that money can buy. But a year ago, my wife passed away, bless her soul, and since then I have been deeply reflecting upon life. I realized there were certain things I had not yet experienced in life, one of which was what it would be like to live like a bum on the streets. I made a commitment to myself to do exactly that for one year. For the past year I have been going from city to city doing just that. So, you see, don't ever judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you.

“Number two is to learn how to read, my boy. For there is only one thing that people can't take away from you, and that is your wisdom. ” At that moment, he reached forward, grabbed my right hand in his and put them upon the books he'd pulled from the shelves. They were the writings of Plato and Aristotle-immortal classics from ancient times.

The bum then led me back past the smiling old woman near the entrance, down the steps and back on the streets near where we first met. His parting request was for me to never forget what he taught me.

I haven't.

In the first place it is a perennial—if not in actual fact, at least in the greengrocer's shop. On the days when dessert is a name given to a handful of chocolates and a little preserved ginger, when macedoine de fruits is the title bestowed on two prunes and a piece of rhubarbs, then the orange, however sour, comes nobly to the rescue; and on those other days of plenty when cherries and strawberries and raspberries, and gooseberries riot together upon the table, the orange, sweeter than ever, is still there to hold its own. Bread and butter, beef and mutton, eggs and bacon, are not more necessary to an order existence than the orange.

Wisdom of the Birds

After raising three children to adulthood, my husband and I were sharing more time together, and we believed that we would have ”money in the bank“ some day in the not too distant future. ”Won“t it be great when we”re retired?“ became a frequent sentence in our conversations. Then, an unforgettable year arrived and changed everything.

It was one of those years, the kind when I found my inner voice whispering, ”What else can go wrong?“ My mom”s health was rapidly failing and our unwed daughter had moved back in with us after delivering a baby girl. During the previous winter, my husband“s mother died a slow, cruel death from Alzheimer”s disease and his father had been hospitalized following emergency surgery. My husband“s mental and physical health began deteriorating with the weight of life”s troubles. Our friends and relatives seemed to be experiencing their unfair share of hardships too. Then September 11th happened. Suddenly, my husband“s seemingly secure job became very insecure as the economy wavered. Life became a topsy-turvy struggle and our marriage was faltering under the strain.

Our daughter”s weakened emotional condition, created by the sudden out-of-state move by her baby“s father (he was to be the baby”s caregiver) created the need for me to request an emergency leave of absence from my job as a special education aide. I would care for her baby while my daughter was student-teaching - student-teaching was the only portion of her schooling left to earn the elementary education degree she needed to secure her future. Though I had been a dedicated district employee for eleven years, the unpaid, short-term leave I requested was denied. Unfortunately, I was caught up in the poor timing of a new superintendent and new special education supervisor; neither knew me. They didn“t realize that I had spent the last eleven years totally devoted to my special education students. Leaving a rewarding, stable job to care for my granddaughter would be a financial burden and a difficult choice, but my heart knew it was the only right choice.

From the time I was a young girl, my parents had instilled in me a love of nature, of all the best, beautiful, free things that life had to offer. Now, more than ever, I would need to draw on that love of nature; it would provide me with the strength needed to pull through the rough times. I began to take long walks with my granddaughter and I found that I would return home physically and spiritually renewed. Autumn was upon us; Alyssa would giggle with delight whenever I placed a leaf or a dried dandelion on the tray of her stroller.

As the trees became bare, I became aware of bird”s nests that had been hidden in the dense summer foliage. “Alyssa, look - a little bird”s nest,“ I would say. One of the most beautiful nests we found was a tiny, circular one created from bits of dried grasses. The weaving was tight, strong, and yet soft to the touch. Surely it would have rivaled one of Frank Lloyd Wright”s creations. Some were crafted from feathers, dryer lint and bits of pet fur. Still other nests were masterpieces of corn silks, twine, strands of Easter grass and cellophane. How resourceful those little birds were! Each day, my eyes were drawn upward as I discovered more nests. Some were reinforced with mud, forming super strong foundations. Through wind, rain, thunder and lightning, they held together. I began to think about the birds - how simple, yet how hard their lives were. It occurred to me that no matter what obstacles were placed in their path, they managed to overcome, to survive. And faithfully, they started each new day with a song.

Those walks helped transform an extremely difficult, desperate time in my life to a more peaceful one. Through my observations of nature, I had faith that everything would work out and we would prevail. Like the birds and their nests, our family had a strong foundation. We were now living a more simple life, spending only what we needed to spend, and all the time becoming more resourceful. Courageously, the little birds of the air huddle close during stormy times, and the current turbulence seemed to be drawing our family closer together. And in the same way that the little birds started each day with a song, we began to listen to beautiful music more often. A sense of tranquility was settling over our home.

Time has a way of healing, of smoothing over the bumpy parts of our lives. Gradually we see things from a different perspective. One afternoon, while out walking with my granddaughter, I witnessed the most exceptional message of all from the birds. “Look at the geese, Alyssa,” I said, as a flock of geese flew overhead in a perfect V formation. For some odd reason, one goose left the group and started to fly in an entirely different direction. The main flock completely changed its course and gradually picked up their wayward member. Our character, basically, is a composite of our habits. “Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny,” the maxim goes.

Sometimes our biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Take，for example，the story t of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study judo despite the fact that the had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident.

The boy began lesson with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was dong well，so he couldn‘t understand why，after three months of training，the master had taught him only one move.

“Mister，”the boy finally said，“shouldn‘t I be learning more moves?”

Not quite understanding，but believing in his teacher，the boy kept training.

Several months later，the master took the boy to his first tournament.

To his surprise，，the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult，but after some time，his opponent became impatient and charged;the boy deftly used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success，the boy was now in the finals.

This time，his opponent was bigger，stronger，and more experienced. For a while，the boy appeared to be overmatched.

Concerned that the boy might get hurt，the referee called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the master intervened.“No，”his master insisted，“let him continue.”

Soon after the match resumed，his opponent made a critical mistake：he dropped his guard. Instantly，the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the champion.

On the way home，the boy and his master reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really in his min.

“Mister，how did I win the tournament with only one move?”

“You won for two reasons，”the master answered.“First，you‘ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second，the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”

The boy‘s biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.

But by studying rocks, which allow scientists to peer back in time, he discovered water hidden inside ringwoodite, which lies in the Earths mantle, and which suggests that the oceans gradually made its way out of the planets interior many centuries ago.

What sort of material could best withstand the types of pressure you would encounter thousands of miles below the ocean surface It could be steel, it could be titanium, it could be some sort of ceramic, or some kind of aluminium system, says Earle. But glass is the ultimate material. By her estimates, a glass sphere about four-to-six inches (10-15cm) thick should be able safely explore the ocean depths she dreams of exploring.

Without ever losing sight of Beniah and the too many other deserted children, the author, Sharon Emecz, tells the story of the two homes for abandoned children, Happy Life Kasarani and Happy Life Juja Farm, organized in the area of Nairobi, Kenya. Developed more than a decade ago by two indomitable couples, Sharon and Jim Powell from Delaware in the USA, and Faith and Peter Kamau from Nairobi, the two settings provide the physical and emotional comforts that would otherwise have been denied the 102 abandoned children now living there, as well as having nurtured the many more who have found adoptive homes. More than that even, the two homes have literally saved the lives of all those children. The book provides detail of the structure and functioning of The Happy Life homes allowing for an appreciation of their organization (as well as a pattern for their replication), and provides as well brief portraits of some of the children saved, of those adults who have opted to share a part of their lives with them whether through work or volunteering, and the adoptive parents who have pledged to share their homes and their love with the children who have become their own. Ms. Emecz gives the reader a real sense of the spiritual journey she has undergone in traveling from London to Nairobi, a journey she and her husband, Steve, now make at least annually.

All of us have read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live. Sometimes it was as long as a year, sometimes as short as 24 hours. But always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed hero chose to spend his last days or his last hours. I speak, of course, of free men who have a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictly delimited.

Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What events, what experiences, what associations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings, what regrets?

Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each day with gentleness, vigor and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come. There are those, of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of “Eat, drink, and be merry”. But most people would be chastened by the certainty of impending death.

In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by some stroke of fortune, but almost always his sense of values is changed. He becomes more appreciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values. It has often been noted that those who live, or have lived, in the shadow of death bring a mellow sweetness to everything they do.

Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life.

The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little appreciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we have until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill.

I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.

But to dwell on my personal circumstances would be to fall into a trap that this book manages, effortlessly, to avoid.

This is how we get to know Burkeman -- as a curious journalist rooting around for an argument, not as a born-again guru who uses his own story of suffering and healing to prove the validity of his personal brand of self-improvement. He punctuates each interview with clear prose about human traits that make a negative path to happiness difficult to adopt. For example, in a chapter on methods for embracing failure, he writes bluntly that ”perfectionism, at bottom, is fear-driven striving … [at] its extremes, it is an exhausting and permanently stressful way to live.“

He found this calling at a time when his obsession with career advancement had ruined his marriage. He argues that once you abandon the five-year-plan approach to life and business, you immediately have more focus and energy for the present moment. Pretty soon you are spending more time with your family and performing better at work.

Labor vanquishes all---not inconstant, spasmodic, or ill-directed labor; but faithful, unremitting, daily effort toward a well-directed purpose. Just as truly as eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, so is eternal industry the price of noble and enduring success.
