二、文化背景及注意事项

1. 如果你想要知道对方是否会做某事可这样问: Can you ...? 若对方会做此事可回答:Yes, I can. (It's easy.) 若不会做此事,可以回答:No, I can't.( It's too hard.)

2. 有时我们想知道对方能、会做什么?也常用What can you do? 对方可根据实际情况作相应的回答。

II.知识“延长线”

1.一般来说,英美人大多有三个名,即名(given/first name),中间名(middle name)和姓(family/last name),middle name 一般不常用。

2. 英美人一般把Mr,Mrs,Miss,Ms,Professor,President等称谓词放在last name 前,而不是放在first name前。

3. 和我们中国人一样,英美人的姓名也都包含着一定的含义。女孩取名一般都与美丽、优雅、幸福有关,男孩则与勇敢、富有、胜利、诚实等有关。如:Alan(艾伦)意为“英俊的人”,而Alice (爱丽斯)则意为“美丽;真理”。

II. 知识“延长线”

西方人举办party时,总要邀请亲朋好友参加。如果他们邀请那些不是很熟悉的朋友,往往在举办party前的一两个星期前提出,以便对方能调整他们的时间表。参加party时,既不可去得太早,也不能迟到。另外,party结束后,要向举办者表示感谢,感谢他们的盛情款待。当然,也可以等回家后给举办者打个电话以示感谢。

外出旅行时,由于种种原因,询问时间和日期是常有的事。如询问车船时刻表、飞机什么时间起飞、降落等。不过,在向他人询问时间、日期时,有几个注意事项还需牢记:一是注意在适当的时机寻找适当的人作为询问对象。尽管西方人比较讲礼貌,但你在他们忙着或心情不好的时候去打扰他们,也可能得不到满意的答复。二是问话时要表达清楚,开门见山提出问题,千万不要为了显示自己懂礼貌,客套话说了很多,弄得别人不知道你想干什么。三是记住在问话前说Excuse me,在得到自己需要的信息后要说Thank you.
