Dear _,

“Women aren’t suited for such hard subjects,” my friend Seung-woo told me with a smug smile. Seung-woo didn’t think that mathematics was a field for women. Although he was my age and wasn’t tied down by most traditional beliefs, he believed that only men could be true mathematicians. The majority of people in my country, South Korea, believe the gender stereotype that women are inherently inferior to men in mathematics. I strongly disagree with this outdated notion. Women are just as capable of outstanding mathematical achievement as men, and I am determined to help disprove gender stereotypes through my example.

Mathematics has always given me a deep sense of satisfaction. Even in elementary school, I was attracted to the precision and logic inherent in mathematical formulas. I devoured as much mathematical information as I could, collecting theorems of mathematicians such as Gauss and Euclid like other students collected stamps. I had the opportunity to test my skills and knowledge in high school, when I competed in several national math competitions, including the Korea Mathematical Olympiad. My strong showing in these venues, along with my top math grades and perfect math score on the Korean SAT, bolstered my confidence in my abilities. I was proud to prove to others that I was capable of performing at the highest levels.

Despite my strong interest and achievement in mathematics, it has been difficult for me to realize my potential due to the Korean educational system, which emphasizes cramming for tests instead of critical understanding. More significantly, Korean social biases against women in the fields of math and science have discouraged me from pursuing my love of mathematics. Thus, I want to study in the United States, where I will be able follow my dream without these constraints. For about a year, I have taken English language courses at a university in Washington, D.C., where I have gained a glimpse of American academic life from the inside. I am very impressed by American students’ devotion to their studies and the system’s ability to support each student’s goals. I am therefore especially interested in attending Boston College, which, in addition to offering outstanding math and science courses, is renowned for its emphasis on cultivating students’ full development, or “cura personalis.” At Boston College, I will be able to focus on my goal of becoming an excellent mathematician.

I am determined to succeed, but I know that I must overcome many challenges. Sometimes, when I feel discouraged by the obstacles I face as a Korean woman in mathematics, I imagine what my life will be like ten years from now. Armed with a Boston College degree, I will visit my old friend Seung-woo. We will have corresponded over the years, so he’ll already know about the many mathematics articles published in my name, and he will be well aware of the international acclaim they received. I will savor the day when Seung-woo admits that I was correct in believing that I could succeed as a mathematician. I will be proud to know that partly due to my achievements, the door to increased opportunities for women in math and science has swung open a little bit wider.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Two scenes stand out in my mind from my visit to Brazil’s Wetland: Forests burning before seed planting and trees as hedgerows. Before the planting season, I could see the leafless remnants of burnt trees still standing. The burning of pristine forests destroys both the habitats and countless species which depend on and thrive in these habitats. The few remaining bare, scarred trees silently convey the cost to our natural resources of pursuing our economic interests. Some forests are preserved by government edict issued in response to international pressure. But most of this preservation occurs alongside major roads — not to protect the ecosystem, but to prevent disturbance to ranches and farms along the highways. The clash between economic and environmental concerns that I witnessed in Brazil fascinates me and attracts me to the Environmental Studies Program.

Two courses in my geography department increased my interest in the connection between the environment and economics: Conservation of Underdeveloped Countries and Environmental Impact Analysis. In the former, we studied the problems of natural resource management in developing countries. The balance is always tilted toward economics growth at the expense of environmental preservation. For example, because the Pantanal Wetland could become a highly productive agricultural system once it’s drained, it is drained regardless of the destruction that drainage causes to the ecosystem. Only portions of the wetland are preserved for tourist purposes.

The other course that piqued my interest is an interdisciplinary course called Environmental Impact Analysis in which we, as a group, created matrix and flow diagrams discussing the economic and environmental impact of logging and preservation of old growth forests. I was able to use tools that I acquired in my economics and environmental studies classes. In general, logging creates economic benefits at the local level. It increases employment in the timber industry and subsequently in related non-timber industries; it also benefits local government. Yet, it has great deleterious environmental effects: soil erosion, watershed destruction, and a decrease in specie diversity due to loss of habitat. The logging industry represents the classic clash between economic and environmental interests.

I also took two sequential classes in the economics department that are related to Resource Management — Theories of Growth & Development and Policies for Economic Development. Because the courses were taught by a professor who is concerned chiefly with economic growth, I learned the standard economic rationalizations for development unrestrained by environmental concerns.

In addition to my interest in resource management policies, I have a specific interest in Geographical Information System (GIS), a powerful tool for natural resource management. After taking several related classes in GIS, I began interning for the National Park Service (NPS). After I learn how to use ARC/INFO, a leading GIS package, I will assist the NPS in constructing projects. Some of my duties include spatial and non-spatial data analysis, digitizing themes such as fire locations, vegetation, wildlife habitats, etc., and tabular and graphical presentation of results. I hope to use the tools I acquire during this internship in my continuing study of our environment.

I would like to study the social and economic factors that influence environmental policy formation. For example, because people worry more about pollution than endangered species, laws and regulations concerning environmental pollution are more numerous and stricter than for bio-diversity. Within the School of Environmental Studies, I have a particular interest in the emphasis: Economics, Policy, and Management. This emphasis deals with how economic factors can create negative externalities, such as pollution, and need to be regulated. This emphasis also tries to consider non-economic values, such as aesthetic pleasure and specie diversity. It also discusses tools like GIS and system analysis that apply to environmental management. Because of my interest in GIS, economics, and environmental studies, this emphasis suits me perfectly. Furthermore, the interdisciplinary approach of the School of Environmental Studies attracts me since it combines social science’s strengths with a knowledge of the natural sciences necessary to protect and preserve the environment.

After completing my masters program, I would like to continue my education and obtain a Ph.D. in natural resource management. This degree would enable me to combine a teaching career with advising business and government on natural resource management issues. Teaching college students is more than a one-way channel; I would also learn from their questions like my professors have from mine. In advising business and government, I can help them strike a balance between economic and environmental concerns. GIS will be a useful tool in helping me give them crucial information.

I have enjoyed an interdisciplinary approach in my environmental studies major and become fascinated by the clash between social interests, especially economics, and environmental needs. I pursued an additional major in economics to better understand this conflict. Furthermore, my work for the NPS will train me in the latest techniques in natural resource management. I would like to continue exploring this clash and resource management in the School of Environmental Studies. Ultimately, I would like to teach and work in natural resource management. Ideally, I would like to find ways for allowing development while preventing the burning of beautiful and valuable eco-systems like the Pantanal Wetland.

Yours sincerely,

xuexila

Dear _,

One of my biggest assets is my big mouth. I love to express myself whenever I can, wherever I can, and however I can. I express myself though the strong sweeping from the bow of my violin, brushing the strings fervently as I tell a story of joy or sorrow. The quick dashes of my pen also provide a method of expression, whether it is weaving a tale or writing a piece of verse that is very terse. Always eager for conversation and often finding my hand suspended in the air during class, especially if the question is asking for my opinion on a certain issue, I find myself talking frequently if I am not writing another chapter for my story, gliding along the ice rink in vain attempts to defy gravity, or practicing the techniques for the violin, augmenting my raw emotion with discipline.

English strikes me as a very intriguing language; although it does not possess the grammatical consistency of Latin, nor the dramatic finesse of Greek, people still value the Germanic language highly. English finds itself in many interesting stories, such as Lord of the Rings, plays such as Othello, and speeches such as those given by the inspirational Winston Churchill. I wish to study English not only to improve my rhetoric and my writing, but also help me better understand the world; I hope to improve my analysis and communication skills. Harbouring a passion for literature and poetry, I express a major interest in the opinions of those who have lived in the past. Also, I enjoy reading a story as much as telling one, fascinated by what goes through the mind of an author.

My reasons for studying in the United Kingdom is because the country has a unique history and culture. In addition to being home to great thinkers such as William Shakespeare and Adam Smith, Britain offers a great environment for studying, whether it is the beautiful medieval countryside of St. Andrews, or the diverse urban complex of London. Also housing students from several hundred different countries, the United Kingdom also offers me an opportunity to meet people I have only heard about, and even people I never thought existed.

I plan on graduating from University an enlightened scholar, whose mind is free from the chains of ignorance. My ultimate wish is to work with the United Nations, hoping to close the unnecessary divide that has caused humankind to fight, cheat, and destroy itself. By studying the works of the past, I will attempt to learn the mistakes of the past, and help the world avert the repetition of history that humans often fall into. My brief time in the El Camino Youth Symphony, my participation in the U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships, or my time as a Freshman Transition leader will not amount to anything if I grow up to become a hedonistic individual and become part of the greed and hatred that is plaguing our world today.

Studying in the United Kingdom is not only an excuse to tour another country, but it is an enlightening adventure that will help me find my purpose in this world and become the best I can be. There is so much that my so- called “open mind” has yet to know, and I will seek out that hidden, untapped knowledge that my voracious brain has been hungering for.

Yours sincerely,

xuexila

高中教育体制能和北美大学更好地对接:因为加拿大的高中是学分制的,每个年级的选课方向和学习重心有所不同;

Dear _,

Having thoroughly enjoyed the study of English Language at A Level, I believe I have a secure academic foundation with which to approach a degree course in this subject with confidence and enthusiasm. The English Language takes a fundamental and crucial role in enhanced communication between different social groups, and to read English would, therefore, be extremely beneficial to both the development of my communication skills and my ability to express ideas and opinions

Additionally, a course in English at this level would provide me with an opportunity to further my knowledge of the theory and historical basis of the language - each of these being aspects of the course that particularly interest me. I also look forward to studying the practical application of English in various social contexts, and the ways in which language has evolved and developed over time. I hope that successful completion of an English degree will be advantageous to me when pursuing a career in marketing and advertising - a field I aspire to enter upon leaving university

In addition to my A Level courses, I have pursued various interests, both in and out of school - including the study of both theoretical and instrumental music to Grade V standard, by means of school lessons. Playing the 'cello has allowed me many opportunities to participate in numerous orchestral concerts and solo performances, which I feel have increased my confidence and improved my ability to communicate with others - by performing and interacting as part of an ensemble. This experience has also allowed me to enhance my awareness of music in general - especially of composers originating from the Baroque period

My part time job as a waitress has also made me more able to co-operate with others (through both colleague and customer interaction), and has improved my ability to take initiative and be independent. I have found the work to be a rewarding and invaluable experience - as both a source of finance, and as a gateway through which to enter the field of employment

Over the past three years, I have become extremely interested in graphic design and html programming. These skills have provided me with paid work in the form of website design for local businesses - through which I have improved my capability to meet deadlines and work to a schedule, and encouraged myself to set personal challenges, learn new skills and meet new people. My self-motivation, creativity and self-expression have also benefited from this experience - all valuable qualities, which I believe are particularly relevant when regarding the nature of course I have chosen

On the whole, I believe myself to be a generally sociable, dedicated and self-disciplined student, although I can be overly competitive at times. I have enjoyed my A Level studies so far, have gained a great deal from them, and believe that I have the determination and ability to enjoy a successful university career.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Having a flair for Economics and accounting I have decided that I want a degree in Accounting and Finance or Management. The many brilliant representatives of the management community around the world have strengthened that resolve.

When I worked in my school as a tutor of English as a Second Language for students from a community school in Muscat, I realized the importance of a strong leader who could organize, command respect, and be able to work well with others. These ideas were further enforced by my month long internship at Novartis Pharmaceutical (Accounts and Finance Department and Human Resources Department).

I attended the Harvard Model Congress in Paris and won the Award of Distinction. One skill in particular that contributed to this award was my confident public speaking.

The last 4 months have been crucial in my learning of real world business and economics. For my IB Extended Essay, titled “To What Extent Does Subway in Oman Operate as an Oligopoly”, I set out to prove the oligpolistic structure of the fast food market in Oman. In this effort, I have come across many real life complexities in pricing behaviour, profit making and other aspects of the Theory of the Firm. While attempting to explain these alternate theories of firms I have developed a keen interest in analyzing and understanding how the world of business works.

After an undergraduate degree in accounting and finance or management I plan to go onto post graduate studies and work on an MBA. A strong performance in a BA will allow me to move onto an MBA and only then shall I be satisfied.

For the last four years I have been part of our schools volleyball team ICE. We have retained our ISAC (Inter Schools Activities Conference, Middle East) title for four years. Playing in the power hitters (spiker) position requires immense physical fitness and to accomplish that I regularly go to the gym for fitness training. I am also part of my school track and field team. Being the fastest sprinter in the school since 11th grade the 100m, 200m and 400m races are my specialty even though I still pursue long distance running. In my spare time I explore and master the computer as I am conversant with a Visual Basic Programming course. It is imperative for me to have the latest hardware and software and I make it a point to install everything myself. I also learn Urdu as it is my native tongue and a link to my culture, to maintain that is crucial.

Living in a diverse international community of over 52 nationalities has allowed to me recognize and appreciate different cultures. With the experience I have and the strong motivation to craft a bright future I feel I can justify my decision to pursue a career in Accounting and Finance or Management.

Yours sincerely,

Dear xx,

“Women aren’t suited for such hard subjects.” my friend Seung-woo told mewith a smug smile. Seung-woo didn’t think that mathematics was a field forwomen. Although he was my age and wasn’t tied down by most traditional beliefs,he believed that only men could be true mathematicians. The majority of peoplein my country, South Korea, believe the gender stereotype that women areinherently inferior to men in mathematics. I strongly disagree with thisoutdated notion. Women are just as capable of outstanding mathematicalachievement as men, and I am determined to help disprove gender stereotypesthrough my example.

Mathematics has always given me a deep sense of satisfaction. Even inelementary school, I was attracted to the precision and logic inherent inmathematical formulas. I devoured as much mathematical information as I could, collecting theorems of mathematicians such as Gauss and Euclid like otherstudents collected stamps. I had the opportunity to test my skills and knowledgein high school, when I competed in several national math competitions, includingthe Korea Mathematical Olympiad. My strong showing in these venues, along withmy top math grades and perfect math score on the Korean SAT, bolstered myconfidence in my abilities. I was proud to prove to others that I was capable ofperforming at the highest levels.

Despite my strong interest and achievement in mathematics, it has beendifficult for me to realize my potential due to the Korean educational system, which emphasizes cramming for tests instead of critical understanding. Moresignificantly, Korean social biases against women in the fields of math andscience have discouraged me from pursuing my love of mathematics. Thus, I wantto study in the United States, where I will be able follow my dream withoutthese constraints. For about a year, I have taken English language courses at auniversity in Washington, D.C., where I have gained a glimpse of Americanacademic life from the inside. I am very impressed by American students’devotion to their studies and the system’s ability to support each student’sgoals. I am therefore especially interested in attending Boston College, which,in addition to offering outstanding math and science courses, is renowned forits emphasis on cultivating students’ full development, or “cura personalis.” AtBoston College, I will be able to focus on my goal of becoming an excellentmathematician.

I am determined to succeed, but I know that I must overcome manychallenges. Sometimes, when I feel discouraged by the obstacles I face as aKorean woman in mathematics, I imagine what my life will be like ten years fromnow. Armed with a Boston College degree, I will visit my old friend Seung-woo.We will have corresponded over the years, so he’ll already know about the manymathematics articles published in my name, and he will be well aware of theinternational acclaim they received. I will savor the day when Seung-woo admitsthat I was correct in believing that I could succeed as a mathematician. I willbe proud to know that partly due to my achievements, the door to increasedopportunities for women in math and science has swung open a little bitwider.

Yours sincerely.

Dear ___:

Marketing experts like to classify people into different generation groups, believing that people of the same age share similar value and attitudes. I agreewith those experts'' theory in that it emphasizes the connection between thecircumstances of one's upbringing and one's later outlook on life. Mypersonality, talents, values, even career choice have been profoundly influencedby my family life and upbringing in Taiwan.

My name is Peter Huang and I’ve grown up in Ten-Mou, a multiculturalneighborhood in suburban Taipei. During the early years of my childhood, myparents exerted a profound influence over my development. Though neither of themwas involved in business, by watching their integrity and hard work, I learnedmore about the true meaning of success than I would ever have in anyclassroom.

My father is an Air Force colonel. He joined the R.O.C Air Force at the ageof 14, struggling to achieve his personal best as the supply division chief ofthe R.O.C. Air Force Academy. Unlike some officers in the military, who dependedon family relationship and privilege to get promoted, my father gained hisposition by hard work and assiduity. He thus emphasized the importance ofindustriousness when it came to my education. When I was 10, I attended a speechcontest. During the week before the contest, my father and I spent two hours aday together, organizing the lecture content, adjust my rhythm, and rehearsing.I was a shy, soft-spoken child, and found speaking in public difficult at first. But through my father's patient efforts and his believe in the rewards of hardwork, I gradually became an excellent public speaker and won many of thecontests that followed. As a result of the experiences such as this, I learned avery strong work ethic and emulated some of my father's best characteristics -perseverance and dedication.

These qualities served me well as I entered mandatory military service inTaiwan and faced many difficult situations. I once led a squad to enact thetyphoon disaster relief action in Nan-tou. We had one week in which to salvage afactory that was half-buried in mud. As the squad commander, I not onlysupervised, but also participated in the demanding and seemly endless diggingwork. And each night, after an exhausting work when all other soldiers wereasleep, I spent extra hours checking if there were sufficient supplies andmaking plans for the next day's relief action. When I finally laid down tosleep, I could not help but reflect on how much I had developed, as both aperson and a leader, since that first speech contest.

My mother has a warm and kind personality, and has always reached out tothe expatriates in our neighborhood. She organized a language exchange club withthe American students in local colleges, hoping to increase understanding ofTaiwanese and American cultures through the exchange of language. I took part inthe club when I was still in elementary school. This childhood multi-culturalexperience instilled in me an active personality and willingness to interactwith people of different cultures. In particularly, it strengthened my interestin American and my desire to work and live there one day.

My mother’s emphasis on international exchange and cooperation has led meto work for the Fulbright Foundation in Taipei as a research assistant. Thisposition allows me to interact with educational associations in the UnitedStates and to take part in international conferences. I once participated in aventure capital seminar in Hsin-Chu, working on the issue of graduate leveltechnology management education with representatives of major high-techcompanies and academic institutions. Last November, I represented the Foundationin an international Tele-conference in Taipei. The conference was conducted bothin English and in Chinese and was hosted by the Prime of Ministry of Education. My work has also given me the opportunity to know and become friends withexceptional Fulbright scholars from the United States.

While my childhood years shaped my character, it was my high school andcollege years which led to my interest in business. 1988 was both a determiningyear to my career choices and a turning point in Taiwan's economy. As peoplefamiliar with Taiwan's modern economic history know, the exchange rate of theNew Taiwan Dollar to U.S. Dollars moved from 40:1 to 25:1 in that year under theoverwhelming pressure of American government. Thus meant that the traditionaladvantage of Taiwan's economy, low labor costs, was no longer our strength.People everywhere were talking about the future of Taiwan's economy. Out of ayoung man's passion, I wanted to contribute my talent and effort to my country. That was the time at which I made up my mind that someday, I will makeTaiwan-made products famous world-widely, like those produced by IBM, Intel, orMicrosoft.

This teenage naive patriotic dream transformed into an interest in businessadministration and economics after I graduated from Taipei First Senior HighSchool. I focused my college study on manufacturing administration andeconomics. From four years of lectures, seminars, and in-factory study in thedepartment of Industrial Engineering at National Formosa University, I acquiredskills in quality insurance, manufacturing planning and control, and factoryimprovement and diagnostic methods. In my economic class, I learned how prices, preferences, and incomes affect people's demand of goods from the microeconomic.I also acquired knowledge of how various factors - government policies, currencyexchange rate, and balance of international trade - affect a country's economicsgrowth. My interest in business, however, is not limited to industrialengineering and economics. In my junior year, I also took 6 credits ofaccounting courses and learned the knowledge of basic accounting principles, financial statements, and managerial accounting. To acquire a more thoroughunderstand of management information systems, I chose “Alumni AssociationDatabase Management System for Department of Industrial Engineering” as mygraduate activity project. From each step of developing the database system, Ilearned solid skills in FoxPro programming and enterprise demand analysis.

I am thankful that my parents provided me with an environment thatencouraged me to develop my personality and an intellect for which I amremembered. With a deeply-instilled work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, anda high level of motivation, I believe I will enrich the professional and socialenvironment at your esteemed Buchman School and continue to grow as a expert inhigh-tech industry.

Yours sincerely,

Dear x,

Having thoroughly enjoyed the study of English Language at A Level, Ibelieve I have a secure academic foundation with which to approach a degreecourse in this subject with confidence and enthusiasm. The English Languagetakes a fundamental and crucial role in enhanced communication between differentsocial groups, and to read English would, therefore, be extremely beneficial toboth the development of my communication skills and my ability to express ideasand opinions

Additionally, a course in English at this level would provide me with anopportunity to further my knowledge of the theory and historical basis of thelanguage - each of these being aspects of the course that particularly interestme. I also look forward to studying the practical application of English invarious social contexts, and the ways in which language has evolved anddeveloped over time. I hope that successful completion of an English degree willbe advantageous to me when pursuing a career in marketing and advertising - afield I aspire to enter upon leaving university

In addition to my A Level courses, I have pursued various interests, bothin and out of school - including the study of both theoretical and instrumentalmusic to Grade V standard, by means of school lessons. Playing the 'cello hasallowed me many opportunities to participate in numerous orchestral concerts andsolo performances, which I feel have increased my confidence and improved myability to communicate with others - by performing and interacting as part of anensemble. This experience has also allowed me to enhance my awareness of musicin general - especially of composers originating from the Baroque period

My part time job as a waitress has also made me more able to co-operatewith others (through both colleague and customer interaction), and has improvedmy ability to take initiative and be independent. I have found the work to be arewarding and invaluable experience - as both a source of finance, and as agateway through which to enter the field of employment

Over the past three years, I have become extremely interested in graphicdesign and html programming. These skills have provided me with paid work in theform of website design for local businesses - through which I have improved mycapability to meet deadlines and work to a schedule, and encouraged myself toset personal challenges, learn new skills and meet new people. Myself-motivation, creativity and self-expression have also benefited from thisexperience - all valuable qualities, which I believe are particularly relevantwhen regarding the nature of course I have chosen

On the whole, I believe myself to be a generally sociable, dedicated andself-disciplined student, although I can be overly competitive at times. I haveenjoyed my A Level studies so far, have gained a great deal from them, andbelieve that I have the determination and ability to enjoy a successfuluniversity career.

Yours sincerely,

Dear x,

In the summer of 20x, on a bright afternoon, I stepped into the high schoolgate as the first place in the city's high school entrance examination. In ablink of an eye, hundreds of days passed, and the days of exploring the OlympicGames seemed to have not gone far, and the curtain of studying abroad had openedagain, beckoning me to interpret the splendor of life again.

Regarding the years before high school, my most vivid memory is that fromelementary school to junior high school, at the end of each semester, I had togo home with a certificate of “three good students” and a stack of books asprizes. In the meantime, although I have experienced several changes of schooltransfers and class teachers, this “honorable tradition” of mine has never beeninterrupted. After entering the high school and being selected for the scienceexperiment class, I cherish my time even more. Diligence, study, and progresshave become my motto, and my academic performance has always been among the bestin the school.

In studying, my greatest hobby and pleasure is thinking. I rarely accept acertain knowledge without thinking, but always try to explore the connection andentanglement between knowledge points and knowledge points, the relationship andmutual proof between existing knowledge and new knowledge. I remember the firsttime I learned the content of electric field. I groped for several days betweenelectric charges, electric field lines, spherical shells and plates. I finallyunderstood the inner connection between electric potential, field strength andcapacitance. It felt like a night in the middle of winter. The superheated bathis generally invigorating. This kind of study habit not only made my learningeasier, but also cleared the obstacles for my road of competition. Sinceelementary school, I have actively participated in competitions. In junior highschool, I won two provincial first prizes in mathematics and physics. The richcontent of high school competitions, the depth and breadth of the level, made mefeel like seeing each other late. God rewards hard work. In 20xx, I won thesecond prize in the provincial division of the Physics Olympiad; in 20x, Icontinued to work hard and won the first prize in the provincial division of thePhysics Olympiad and the second prize in the provincial division of thechemistry Olympiad.

Thinking is not only a booster for learning, but also a spice to enrichlife and an incubator for wisdom. Thanks to the habit of reading books since Iwas a child, literary masterpieces, celebrity biographies, encyclopedicknowledge, news essays... are often captured by the eyes that I like to explore, stuffed into the grinding wheel of thinking, and from time to time will produceshort and long Learned.

Although it is often said that thought makes people silent, I am aconclusive counterexample. Whenever I have free time, talking and laughing withmy classmates is one of my hobbies. Not only did I relax my nerves whilelaughing, but also enhanced the friendship between my classmates. A group ofpeople often gather around, and occasionally witty words burst out, and everyonelaughs forward and backward. Because of this, I have a good relationship amongclassmates and many friends. No, less than a month after I entered the highschool gate, I became acquainted with my new classmates every day.

I remember a philosopher said: “Ideal refers to the beacon. Without ideals, there is no firm direction, and without direction, there is no life.” Thirteenyears ago, our family moved from our home in Anhui thousands of miles away tothe reform and opening Zhangjiagang City, the frontier zone, may be the call ofideals. Today, I have grown from a ignorant child to a high school student, anddreaming of Tsinghua has always been my persistent pursuit. I remember when Iwas five or six years old, every time an adult asked me what university I wantedto go to in the future, the answer was almost always “Sunshine University”.Sunshine University, like a green dream across a vast expanse of clear water, once haunted every student's heart on the vast land. However, as the age growsand the state of learning changes, many people gradually hide this unattainabledream back in their hearts. And my dream, instead of being wiped out by theyears, has increased day by day, speeding up jointing.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

The more extensively one studies any subject, the more common ground one will find it shares with all the others. This can be taken to its furthest extent when applied to literature - because there is nothing that is not, or cannot be, explored in literature. Of course, this is only half of the appeal of reading and writing. For an example of the second, look to Nabokov - what does, for instance, Lolita, teach us? Only how the English language can be manipulated into something new and exhilarating, wonderfully poetic, wickedly ironic. I have a bad reading habit: I am too easily seduced by a fancy prose style.

There is nothing a true bookworm loves more than rifling through a bookshop, be it the charmingly musty atmosphere of a second-hand store, or the print-fresh fragrance of Waterstones. American literature is my current infatuation: My favourite book right now is Catch-22, an insanely hilarious (yet often extremely thought-provoking) satire set in the Second World War. I have also recently discovered that contemporary of Joseph Heller, Kurt Vonnegut, and am absolutely taken with his novels. They are all strikingly original, all of them terribly sad and terribly funny. A-Level English Literature has helped me to become a better reader; I am able to dissect texts and see the underlying meanings that may be present, and analyse the choices the author has made in language, form and structure. It has also taught me to improve my writing: it is more flowing, my expression is clearer, I have been able to curb my tendency to digress (just a little). I love exploring the possibilities of language and discovering new writers and books to feed an old obsession. Last year, a friend and I set up and now run a small book club; we have recently found ourselves (to no complaint!) in an accidentally Russian rut. We have read Dostoevsky, we have read Pasternak, we have read Turgenev, we have (appropriately, given how Nabokovian this repetition sounds) read Nabokov. Last summer, I organised for the book group to attend a reading of Chuck Palahniuk's - an author of whom I am a huge fan, perhaps best known for his novel Fight Club (later somewhat mutated into the cult film) whose excessively quotable, delightfully cynical social commentary is characterised by its repetetive patterns, unexpected metaphors, and sometimes disturbing themes. The reading was an incredible experience! I love concerts and have been attending the theatre since I was a child, but there is still something about live performances that will always remain a wonderful surprise to me. That folkish storytelling tradition is such a necessary part of literature.

Either symbiotic or parasitic is the relationship between this love and the other one; philosophy. Anyone who has devoted their time to thinking about what we could perhaps call the fundamental questions of philosophy - those concerning God, and death, and that word so often thrown around (it sounds a little common now) 'purpose', good and evil, right and wrong - will agree it is a rather consuming preoccupation. When this is the case, us readers can always return to that old escapists retreat of literature - but then, can it not be said that some of the best books ask more questions than they answer? Books are in fact to blame for my interest in philosophy, as they are for many other things: in this instance, it was a combination of a love of the Greek Classics and Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World, a summary of a good two thousand-odd years of philosophers and philosophies. In the years since, I have read a number of other books on philosophy, most recently returning to my fascination with the ancient Greeks to read Plato's Republic; a mind-blowing excersise in the early days of Greek philosophy. The techniques used and the questions asked are certainly still very applicable today. My father is also something of a philosopher, and he has developed my interest, teaching me about and debating with me on various complex philosophical issues. In spite of, or more correctly because of my constant (allow me a colloquialism) philosophizing, I have become a christian - if a bit of an unorthodox one. I regularly attend church, and for me the main value of this is the educational one. Religion has also probably been the spur to the eleven hours of voluntary work I do at the British Red Cross bookshop (which has unexpectedly and brilliantly paid off since the manager asked me to take home any books i'd like!). This year my sixth form started a twilight A2 in Religious Education: Philosophy and Ethics, and a month into the course, I absolutely love it. It has given me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge in the subject, suggested to me new reading material, and provided an arena for philosophical debate.

An element of philosophy that seems to have gone out of fashion is that of political and economic philosophy. Stubborn and questioning from the first, I took my earliest political stance at three when I became aware of animal cruelty; although this is still an important issue for me, at the moment I excersize more concern over the state of our democracy. I am a member of a party and various pressure groups - and we are advised, when writing the personal statement, to avoid expressing a political bias either way! I shall try not to, but hope that you concur when I say that I believe in democracy, equality, freedom of speech, and as little government involvement in our lives as can be possible without risking anybody's safety, freedom and prosperity. My concern over current affairs is, however, steeped in my interest in political theory. As far as that goes, my Sociology A-Level course is of great interest. Sociology covers almost every aspect of our lives, and so informs political theory and debate no end; learning about the various perspectives on how society works pushes you to further question our culture and the prevailing normals and values, and to identify not ontly the problems in society but the possible solutions.

Now, then, for the 'outside interests' - for me, this is mainly in the arts. All too often I hear art galleries described as 'boring', but London's wide variety of galleries and exhibitions are regular haunts for me. As well as being a lover of fine art, I am very into illustration, and am a big fan of the 'Graphic Novel' - or more basically, comics! My favourite art medium, either this or sculpture - there is something that is much more real and intense in sculpture than in two-dimensional art. Juan Munoz puts this across perhaps better than any other recent artist. I have been drawing and painting for a long time, guided by my artist grandfather, and am taking a Photography A-Level. I have learned how to compose a good photograph, create an absorbing film sequence, and develop my own photos - as far as I am concerned, the most exciting part. Music and drama are also loves of mine - I was raised on Bob Dylan, establishing in me particularly an appreciation of lyrics, and I suspect that I have been writing music myself practically as long as I have known how to write! I can play very simple guitar, but someday would like to develop my abilities, as well as learn other instruments. The theatre is something else I was brought up with, but only in the past year or so have discovered the possibilities of the musical - my favourite being the fairly recent Wicked.

To conclude, very simply: the word 'philosophy' is derived from the greek for 'love' and 'knowledge' - a philosopher, a lover of knowledge. This describes me perfectly. The depth of my interest is proof that I would be able to develop my own skills and contribute to the course that I choose. I hope I have managed to convey just how much I would value the opportunity to attend a university where i could fully immerse myself in learning.

Yours sincerely,

xuexila
