Mooncakes are Chinese pastries traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The festival is for lunar worship and moon watching; moon cakes are regarded as an indispensable delicacy on this occasion. Mooncakes are offered between friends or on family gatherings while celebrating the festival, one of the three most important Chinese festivals.

Typical mooncakes are round or rectangular pastries, measuring about 10 cm in diameter and 4-5 cm thick. A thick filling usually made from lotus seed paste is surrounded by a relatively thin (2-3 mm) crust and may contain yolks from salted duck eggs. Mooncakes are rich, heavy, and dense compared with most Western cakes and pastries. They are usually eaten in small wedges accompanied by Chinese tea.

Most mooncakes consist of a thin tender skin enveloping a sweet, dense filling. The mooncake may contain one or more whole salted egg yolks in its center to symbolize the full moon. Very rarely, mooncakes are also served steamed or fried.

Traditional mooncakes have an imprint on top consisting of the Chinese characters for “longevity” or “harmony” as well as the name of the bakery and the filling in the moon cake. Imprints of the moon, the Chang'e woman on the moon, flowers, vines, or a rabbit (symbol of the moon) may surround the characters for additional decoration.

Mooncakes are considered a delicacy; production is labor-intensive and few people make them at home. Most mooncakes are bought at Asian markets and bakeries. The price of mooncakes has been said to range from $10 to $50 (in US dollars) although cheaper and more expensive mooncakes can also be found.

Chusok (“fall evening”) is a Korean “Harvest Moon” (Han-gawi) festival set on the 15th day of the eighth lunar moon. Chusok (韩国中秋节), also known as the Korean Thanksgiving or Mid-Autumn Festival, is one of the most celebrated Korean holidays. It occurs during the harvest season. Thus, Korean families take this time to thank their ancestors for providing them with rice and fruits.

The celebration starts on the night before Chusok and ends on the day after the holiday. Thus, many Korean families take three days off from work to get together with family and friends.

The celebration starts with a family get-together at which rice cakes called “Songphyun” (蒸糕) are served. These special rice cakes are made of rice, beans, sesame seeds, and chestnuts. Then the family pays respect to ancestors by visiting their tombs and offering them rice and fruits. The Koreans visit the graves of their ancestors to bow and clean the area for the coming winter. In the evening, children wear their favorite hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) and dance under the bright moon in a large circle. They play games and sing songs. Like the American Thanksgiving, Chusok is the time to celebrate the family and give thanks for their blessings.

Community activities include masked dance, Kanggangsuwollae, an ancient circle dance, tug-of-wars and the tortoise game, kobuk-nori (乌龟游戏), in which two men dress as a tortoise and tour the village dancing and performing for food and drink. Most of all, Chusok is a time to give thanks for the autumn harvest and reaffirm familial and community ties.

Moon Cakes

There is this story about the moon-cake. during the Yuan dynasty(A.D. 1280-1368)China was ruled by the Mongolian people. Leaders from the preceding Sung dynasty(A.D. 960-1280)were unhappy at submitting to the foreign rule, and set how to coordinate the rebellion without being discovered.

I think Mid-Autumn Day is an old traditional festival in China.

Everybody likes it because its a family get-together.

You see it is called”Mid-Autumn Day“,so it often comes in September or October.

It is on the 15th of the 8th of the lunar month.

Now, lets say something about this interesting festival.

Firstly, Id like to say something about the moon.

I like it very much because I want to be an astronaut in the future.

That day the moon is round, big, just like a beautiful plate hanging on the blue cloth.

When I see the moon, I will remember the ancient myths--the godess Chang Er and her little rabbit are playing under the tree which Wu Gang grows.

I will also think about Armstrongs first moonwalk.

I will also miss the friends in Tai-wan island, in Macao and Chinese people who are abroad.

I know they are missing us very much, too.

Secondly, I11 say something about the tradition on Mid-Autumn Day.

Look!Theres a big tree in a garden of a Chinese fami-ly.

All the family members are sitting around a big table under the tree in the open air.

They are eating the mooncakes and admiring the full moon in the sky.

That is a family reunion dinner.

The mooncakes and the moon represent the love from a family.

I think this is one of the most valuable things in the world.

Thirdly,it is a very good opportunity to make three wishes on Mid-Autumn Day.

My wishes are: the first, I, an astronaut in the future, would like to go to the moon one day, and stay with the sky and stars; the second, I hope every person in the world will stay with family, share love from the family forever; the third, I hope everybodys dream will come true.

That is the Mid-Autumn Day in my mind.

I will always re-member: East or West, home is best.

There are many legends about the Mid-Autumn festival, but I think the most beautiful and touching legend is the legend of the moon.

The Mid-Autumn festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. It is a traditional festival in China. The Mid-Autumn festival originates from the story of the moon and the moon. The moon is a beautiful myth in ancient China. Chang e houyi was a pair, and because chang e stole the xiandan, flew to the sky. Fly slowly to the sky. And it was August 15th when she rose. So we made the Mid-Autumn festival on August 15th, when chang e was thinking about houyi, and he sprinkled many many round flat cakes in the sky. In the future, the person can commemorate chang e to do the shape of the pie that she throws down. So I always eat moon cakes and pomelo when Im Mid-Autumn festival.

The Mid-Autumn festival is very happy now, because it can take three days off. Im really excited. Planning to how to play in the last three days, a day on the first day of the nets, playing games, the second day with friends together to eat moon cakes and enjoy the moon, on the third day, simply is the last day so I want to and play one day, the first to get to the Internet, chat again with the village children, shopping, eating moon cakes and watch and enjoy the three days, that is, this three days is happy and excited, but who thought of hou yi and changs sad story, this day is the day of both of them respectively, regardless of how many years did not see, if they are, still thinking of each other, this problem has been in my mind, I think.

On the occasion of arrival of the Mid-Autumn festival, many people are too busy to go home, far from home is called relatives back to spend the Mid-Autumn festival, is a full moon, is also a beautiful myth, the Mid-Autumn festival, is a far in homesick for people of his hometown, home is a confused people find a home outside the compass.

I remember when I was very young, the people of our hometown were making mooncakes themselves. Our old family now seems to have that kind of wooden mooncake mold. Therefore, in my hometown, apart from the custom of appreciating the moon, I also have the tradition of making mooncakes.

The Mid-Autumn festival falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. Most people call it the Mid-Autumn festival. The Mid-Autumn festival is called Mid-Autumn festival in the middle of the autumn. I think the most brilliant thing for the ancients was to choose the most round moon of the year, as a national holiday for the appreciation of the moon.

The mid autumn festival “that night, people look up to the sky like jade such as dish bright moon, nature would look forward to a family reunion., that consigns the also take this feeling of hometown and relatives thoughts of love. So, the Mid-Autumn festival is also called” the mid autumn festival. The Mid-Autumn festival, peoples main activity is the moon and eat moon cakes.

In the Mid-Autumn festival, our country has the custom of appreciating the moon since ancient times, every autumn night will be held to greet the cold and the moon. In the case of the big incense, the fruit of the moon cakes, watermelons, apples, plums, grapes and so on, the family in turn worshiped.

The Mid-Autumn festival has the custom of eating moon cakes. As the saying goes, “August, October is full circle, the Mid-Autumn moon cakes are fragrant and sweet”. With month reunion in the round of the one million people, with the bread circle tsuneo of one million people, with the moon cake is missing hometown, the feeling of missing loved ones and pray for a bumper harvest, happiness, have become the wishes of people all over the world, the moon cake was used as the gift of seeing the bridegroom off with friends, contact feelings.

The legend of the Mid-Autumn festival is very rich, such as the moon and the moon, wu gang, the jade rabbit, and so on.

The autumn air is cool, the sky is sky high, is the annual Mid-Autumn festival. The “moon to the Mid-Autumn festival”, which makes sense.

Watching the moon with a ring of gold rings has finally arrived, it first golden golden, slowly through the plumes of smoke clouds, to rise, rise, and in a flash, moon yan palladium becomes shallow, shallow, white! It rose proudly. It was so cute and funny, like a silver dish that reflected a white light.

The whole world seemed to be immersed in the silver sea of light, the warm and quiet night. I also put it in the sea of moonlight. The moonlight was full of my clothes and warmed my heart - I felt the warmth of the sun too warm and unrestrained. The stars were lonely and cold. Only this gentle and tranquil moonlight can bring about the best of it.

I am curious to ask mother why the moon in the Mid-Autumn festival big double circle? Mother touched my head and said with a smile, “Mid-Autumn festival is a time for family reunion, so the moon of Mid-Autumn festival is big and round.” Oh, I see that the moon in the Mid-Autumn festival on the wandering in a foreign land to relatives and wishing, no wonder the great poet li bai out: “look at the bright moon, bowed their heads and remembering home”. Su shi, the great man, expressed his best wishes for a long and long life.

I like the mood of the Mid-Autumn festival, the round moon, the adults taste the food of the festival, talk about the joy of harvest, the blessing of the family who cant go home. And I feel loved in this mood. Happy Mid-Autumn festival to all people!
