①不知从什么时候开始，数字中最普通的“4”竟然成了人们最忌讳的符号。车牌号忌讳有“4”；结婚绝对不选带“4”的日子。有些人对“4”的忌讳甚至到了迷信的程度：遇“4”“14”“24”日时谨慎出门；就餐时“4”号桌绝对不坐；四层带“4”号的楼绝对不买，生怕“4”带来晦气和不吉利。有的人为了得到一个所谓的吉利号“6”和“8”，而不惜花重金。连续号为888的车号被某富商花巨资购买；连续号为6666的手机号，同样有人愿意出高价，而“444”号绝少有人问津。于是南方的某个城市干脆将车号尾数的“4”取消了；一些开发商给楼层编号时，也取消4层和14层的顺序编号，影剧院里也莫名地没有了4排，“4”成为人们最避讳的数字。笔者仔细查阅了中国古代“谈凶论吉”的权威典籍《周易》，并没有给“4”贴上“凶煞”的标签。

②在《周易》中，先天八卦中的“四”与震卦对应，蕴含着积极向上、奋进、茂盛等意向；后天八卦中“四”与巽卦对应时，蕴含着自由、活泼、昌盛等意向，根本没有晦气、倒霉、不吉利之意。

③现代人忌讳“四”的'主要原因是其与“死”谐音，特别是在东南沿海地区一些方言中，“四”有时直接念成“死”，于是就被视为晦气、倒霉、不吉利的数字，避而远之。这种避讳没有任何科学道理，可以说是一种愚昧与无知。

④其实，作为数字应当说无所谓好与不好，它只是一种量的表示符号。过去人们在生活中从来没有谁给“四”打上吉利与晦气、顺利与倒霉的烙印。

⑤纵观中国历史与文化，“四”还是一个非常重要而被人们仰慕的数字，许多事物多以“四”为组合。

⑥天有“四时”(春、夏、秋、冬)：地有“四方”(东、西、南、北)；社会分工有“四民”(士、农、工、商)；教育有“四科”(德行、言语、政事、文学)；书籍分类有“四部”(经、史、子、集)；国有“四维”(礼、义、廉、耻)；人有“四端”(仁、义、礼、智)；中医有“四诊”(望、闻、问、切)；饮食有“四大菜系”(川、鲁、苏、粤)；戏曲有“四行当”(生、旦、净、丑)；“四功”(唱、念、做、打)；“四大名旦”(梅、尚、程、荀)；古人心目中有“四美”(良辰、美景、赏心、乐事)；民俗有“四大节日”(春节、清明、端午、中秋)；“四喜”(福、禄、寿、禧)；吉祥物有“四灵”(龙、风、麒麟、龟)；人生“四喜”(久旱逢甘霖、他乡遇故知、洞房花烛夜、金榜题名时)，而汉语最其表现力的是四字成语。
