3. Which do you prefer to spend time with friends or spend time alone?

Well, I would say, someone who has high moral standard as me is likely to be my friend. I suppose, I think of a friend who is trustworthy, honest and loyal, is the right guy. Well, usually, I call them to make contact. I’m tired of using those online devices, which can hardly express my emotions. To be honest, I love to hear their voice, which makes me feel kind and friendly.
6. Do you like face-to-face conversations with people?
Yes, face-to-face communication is the most efficient way to exchange ideas with others, because you can use body languages to express your views. One more thing, people can see the facial expression and vivid hand gestures when you’re talking, so it’s easy for them to know whether you are in good mood or not.

I met my best friend while I was at university. He was in the same class. At first, he scolded(责骂) me for leaning(倾斜) back on my chair but, after a while, we began to become good friends. I used to meet him regularly at an Internet café. He went there regularly. We would spend hours there together. He would always lend a hand to me because I didn’t know much about computers at that time.
He’s a humble(谦逊的) guy, never shows off his knowledge, even though he can. He’s sincere and doesn’t mind mildly(和善地) scolding you or even himself in all the same sentence. . He is usually very sociable, but sometimes he can also be a bit shy. He is good at soccer and volleyball and used to be on the school team. He’s quite muscular(强壮的) and his hair is frizzy(卷曲的). He has very droopy(无精打采的) eyes, like a puppy(小狗) and a very wide mouth.
I think the main reason we are such good friends is because we have a lot in common and we both have the same kind of humour. We also always support each other whenever we need help. I think we are such good friends because we don’t feel we ever have to pretend(伪装) around each other, and we are really helpful to one another.
Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most significant persons in world history and he is often considered as the most diversely talented person ever to have lived in human history. His full name was ‘Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci’ and lived from 1452 – 1519 mainly in Italy. He had an incomparable talent and he excelled as a painter, engineer, mathematician, architect, geologist, writer, cartographer, inventor, botanist, sculptor, anatomist, and musician.
He probably would have been a famous person in history only because of his perfection and talent in art, let along the other talents he had. He was a genus and a second to none figure of Renaissance humanist ideal. The talent, curiosity and logic he presented at his time of living were simply superhuman. His famous painting includes Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, Vitruvian Man, The Creation of Adam and the world now revere these works as the greatest art works of all time. In many art colleges and institutes, his works are considered to be the model works and grammar for fine work on art. His arts, paintings and notebooks compose a contribution to later generations of artists.
He is also esteemed for his ingenuity in technology and many of his ideas inspired some later invention in the field of science and engineering. His contribution in technology includes the conceptualization and experiments in solar power, flying machines, armoured vehicles, calculating machine etc. He was a high class inventor and visionary of science. His other inventions like bobbing winder, optics and hydrodynamics were well ahead of his time. He has great contribution in anatomy, civil engineering and optics as well. It would require a large volume of books to list down his contributions and talents. He would be revered throughout the history and in my opinion he is one of most influential and famous historical figure the world has ever seen.

The United States of America is a land of historical events. Besides, the country is also famous for some of its heroic sons. Abraham Lincoln is one of them. I am really glad that I got the opportunity to talk about him for the next few minutes.
I knew about Lincoln from the history class when I was in high school . Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the USA. During his reign, the situations were unusual. The country went under some serious critical moments and the Civil War was one of them. Besides, there were some political and constitutional crises as well. But Lincoln controlled the situations in an efficient manner. It is Abraham Lincoln who abolished the slavery. Before the abolition of this system, racism was at its peak. Lincoln also did some other notable activities. He is the man who also made the federal government system stronger. The modern economy actually started its journey with the association of this President. In fact, many of the facilities we are enjoying today are the gift of this smart man.
Yes, I like him much. He is a historical figure in the history of the USA. He served the country as a great guardian and wanted to improve the existing norms and rules. Accordingly, a good number of changes took place in the country and we are bearing the legacy in the present days. It is really a matter of courage indeed to rule a nation during a bloody war and provide the right directives, working amid internal crisis and more. He also supervised and set strategies during the war so that the losses are minimal. All of his attempts were humane and he dreamt of a modern America. He emancipated the slavery in the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution for the USA. In fact, this the greatest tasks he has ever done and for this reason, a majority of the US citizens like me hail him.
Ok right then, well I’ve decided to talk about a speech I once heard that left a really deep impression on me, and it was by a guy called Li Kaifu, who I’m not sure if you’ve heard of before, but he’s one of the most accomplished and respected businessmen here in China, which is why I made the effort to listen to what he had to say. And I listened to it at home on my computer, cos I was lucky enough to find an mp3 recording online of a speech he once gave at Beijing University.
But anyway, as for what he talked about, well it was quite a while ago when I heard it, probably about two or 3 years ago, so I can only remember bits of it, but in a nutshell, it was about success and how we can go about achieving it. So for example, one thing he touched upon was how we should all follow our dreams, instead of simply doing what other people expect of us. And hearing this from Li Kaifu really made me believe in the truth of that statement, because he’s speaking from experience.
So I thought it was really informative and I was able to learn a tremendous amount from it, such as, you know, how to be successful in what we do, and also what values we should live our lives by. What else?……um……Oh yeah, and another thing that made his talk especially interesting was the fact that he used a lot of stories. So I mean, even though his talk went on for over an hour or so, I didn’t feel bored at all listening to it. So um yeah, that’s pretty much everything I can remember about it. Thanks for listening!
Notes:
How we can go about achieving it……
Touch upon = 提到
They attribute their success to the fact that ……
Informative = 增进知识的
His talk went on for over an hour =
……or so = 左右
What else?…Oh yeah, =
that’s pretty much everything I can remember about it = 我能记得差不多就这些!

Sample answer:
I have heard numerous speeches, lectures, commentaries on various topics and issues throughout different stages of my life and among them the speech that was given by our primary school teacher on occasion of our fare-well is the most influential one and I still vividly recall it. The teacher who gave the speech was Mr. Mark Augustine and he was at his late forties at that time. As fifth grade school going kids we did not comprehend quite clearly what was the school fare-well all about. We knew that this is going to be our last day at our primary school and we would start our new school soon. Mr. Mark was already a revered teacher for his teaching style, good manor, humour and honesty.
Rumour had that, he was much more qualified to be a college professor rather than being a primary school teacher.
On the day, we had our parents present in school and we had been enjoying everything. As part of the farewell speech Mr. Mark approached to the stage and started mentioning what funny things we had done in the last 5 years. We as well as our parents started laughing on the things he mentioned. He mentioned how a kid started screaming in the sight of a cockroach, how a kid of class two expressed his friendship to a girl, how we tried to play amid of the class and many more interesting and funny events.
He then moved on topics that I still hear in my mind. He told how study is our primary responsibility, how we should listen to our parents, how have we achieved our liberation as a nation, how to respect the Mother Nature and all the honestly and bravery we should possess in our heart. The topics and his way of presenting them vibrated us heavily. I can still remember how the advises came back to my life time to time. As a kid those advises and moralities were probably way to heavy to grasp but I still believe that the speech had a great impact in my life as well as the lives of the other kids who were present there.

You should say:
Who he/she is
what he/she did
When you first knew him or her
and why you are interested in him/her
I have a sort of crush on Sima Guang, a prime minister from the Song dynasty,about 1000 years ago, and I find this crush rather queer, hard to explain, as he was a diehard conservative, while I embrace libertarian ideas. On most issues, I agree more with his political opponent Wang Anshi.
Sima Guang was held as a model Confucian politician and scholar by his contemporaries and later generations for his honesty, self discipline and sense of morality. He was strict with others and stricter with himself, too tough to be charismatic. In politics, he was irrationally uncompromising, which to a certain extent damaged the prospects of the nation and his own career. Su Shi, one of his proteges, irritated at his obstinacy, nicknamed him ‘Sima Bull’.
I’m sure he isn’t the social, easy-going type, definitely unromantic. We wouldn’t get along well even if we met. But ever since the first time i heard of him in a primary history class, about a story that him cleverly saved a play pal from drowning in a water tank when he was just a little boy,I do find him cute in many aspects.
He was a faithful husband. ancient China was a polygamous society. Men were allowed to marry a wife and take concubines. Although rigorous prerequisites were imposed, only men upholding high moral standards followed the laws to the word. And Sima Guang was one of the few. He refused to take a concubine even when his wife was found infertile and his conditions fulfilled the prerequisites. He got ruffled up whenever his wife pressed the issue.
It might sound a little hypocritical. Only those who know him truly are sure of his sincerity. In ancient China, people believed children (especially male ones) to be a testment of one’s integrity and God would punish those who commit moral or other despicable crimes with a childless curse. And a man has the obligation to continue his family line. Sima Guang must have been exceptionally courageous to face the possible moral pressure.
Sima Guang wasn’t a born saint. He used to hang out with courtesans and wrote some amorous poetry in his youth. On a few occasions, his opponents playfully confronted him with those poems. Imagine his embarrassment!
He was a neat freak. He was the editor-in-chief in compiling China’s first chronological history book, 'Comprehensive Mirror to Aid in Government' (资治通鉴), which covers the entire Chinese history from the Warring States period to the foundation of the Song dynasty. The project took 19 years, and the piles of drafts filled two rooms. People were awed by his team’s serious attitude when reading those drafts. Every page was neatly written, with only a minimum of corrections.
He was indifferent to wealth. When his wife died, he had to sell his only three acres of farmland to cover up the funeral cost.
Sometimes self-denying could be sexy.

1.语音、的语调是否正确,口齿是否清楚;
2.流利程度;
3.语法是否正确,用词是否恰当,是否符合英语表达习惯;
The best speech I’ve ever heard was back in my highschool days. It must have been 2 years already, but I swear I remember everymoment of it… even till now. I liked the speech not so much for its content,but more for the way the speaker delivered his speech.
This particular speech took place in the school’s lecturehall and it was packed with students and teachers. Luckily for me, I got inearly and sat right in the front – 5 meters from the stage. The speech was tobe about “Healthy Living”…not exactly very interesting I thought.
But when the speech started, it brought the housedown. The speaker entered the hall wearing a huge hamburger suit holding a hugeplate of McDonald burgers and fries! And he shouted “I’m lovin’ it …..And.... I’mdying from it!” Everyone was on thefloor. What an awesome way to kick off!
The whole point of the speech, as you might haveguessed, was about the harm of fast food. That part in itself wasn’t thatinteresting because he was throwing all kinds of numbers about calories, bodyfat, at us. I guessed no one really paid attention to that. But the impact hadalready been made. Fast food equals a fast death. Maybe I’m exaggerating a bithere.
But the speech was truly effective in that I had stayed off fast foodsince then. Anyway, the speech then ended with a standing ovation.
Describe an interesting talk or speech you heard recently.
You should say:
when and where you heard it;
what the talk or speech was about;
who gave the talk or speech;
and explain why you think it was interesting.
I recently heard an interesting talk from an APP of learning English. Last Thursday, I clicked the learning English APP on my phone, and it gave me a daily push notification of a talk. The topic of the talk is fart facts, which is given by a doctor. It raised my interest to listen to it. The talk said fart is a gas coming from our intestines. As long as you eat, there is fart. It comes from your blood and chemical reactions in your body.
But actually only 1% of our fart is stinky. Everyone produce about half a liter of farts every day. Yes, the elegant and young girls also fart, too. It said usually farts aren’t dangerous even if they are flammable ones. We won’t suffocate in a room full of farts and a continuous fart for 7 years will produce equivalent energy of an atomic bomb. And there is a term of “brain fart”, but it refers to doing something dumb. Fart is even regarded as a sort of greeting in an Indian tribe in South Africa.
I think it was interesting because people are often unwilling to mention about farts, most of us think they are disgusting. But it is a kind of normal physical need and we have many misunderstanding about fart. The doctor explained the fart facts in a humorous and elegant way. It made me laugh out.
Describe an unusual building you’ve visited
You should say:
where it is
what it is used for
what it looks like
and explain why you think it is unusual
Describe a modern building
Describe a historic building
TV tower
2.小蛮腰:slender waist
3.观光:sightseeing
4.地点:venue
Here I would like to talk about the Canton Tower in Guangzhou, which is oneof the local landmarks and famous for its unique design and architecture. I’vebeen there for several times and I will recommend it to every visitor to thiscity.
The Canton Tower is actually an astronomical and sightseeing tower designedby Dutch architects, located on Haixinsha Island, which was originally the venuefor the 2010 Asian Games. It made its name and be known of the whole Asiabecause of its unusual and special structure shown in the opening and closingceremony of the Asian Games on TV. Locals give it a nickname as “the slenderwaist” because of its twisted structure. Its exterior form is generated by twoellipses, one at foundation level and the other one at top. These two ellipsesare rotated relative to another, and the tightening caused by the rotationbetween the two ellipses forms a “waist”; so I think that’s the reason why ithas such a vivid local name.
I’ve visited the interior of the tower, which is pretty amazing as well.Inside, it is subdivided into different zones with various functions, includingTV and radio transmission facilities, you know, as it is supposed to be, andobservatory decks for you to admire the view of the whole city, the revolvingrestaurant, which I heard is pretty classy but I failed to try last time,horizontal ferris wheel, recommended as the best venue for proposal in the city,exhibition spaces, shops, and 4D cinemas etc.
So you can say, it is amulti-functional place for our local people. And the most important thing is,you could enjoy wonderful landscape there! Therefore, I really think thisunusual architecture is a good way for you to hang out with friends andappreciate the great beauty of the city.
