The first time I ran, like really ran, was during middle school gym class. It took me 11 minutes and 47 seconds to finish a mile. I've been running ever since.
Running is the kind of thing where you put in the time and expect to see results, and let me be the first to tell you: It is supremely discouraging when you don't. It's discouraging when you run a five-mile race with your entire family and come in a solid 15 minutes behind everyone else, and it's discouraging when that time is no faster or slower than your five-mile time five years ago.
And yet, my alarm is already set for 6 a.m. tomorrow, even though it's probably going to be rainy and definitely going to be cold and even though most of the time, I really hate running.
Don't ask me why. All I know is this: As much as I hate running, I love being a runner.
There's some kind of camaraderie between people who spend more money each year on running shoes than on all their other shoes combined, and there's some fundamental similarity between people who can cross 10 miles without pausing.
On days that I run, I exert myself purely for exertion's sake. If you run too, you get why.
When you're a runner, your people are the girls with hair elastics on their wrists and the boys with shorts shorter than yours. They might be better, faster or stronger than you, but you belong with them.
It took me almost 10 years of plodding along at an 11-minute mile before I realized that I could call myself a runner, no matter how slow I go or how many races I lose.
I've laced up my shoes at least once a week since the first day I stepped foot on a track in middle school. Some weeks it's every day, some weeks it's not. Some days, I'll barely go more than a mile, and some days, I'll walk more than I jog. I may not have medals, but I have fresh air, time alone, and creaky knees and tight quads.
For me, that's enough. I run, so I am a runner.

A Reason, Season, or Lifetime
People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When you figure out which one it is, you will know what to do for each person.
When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally, or spiritually. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part, or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. Sometimes they die. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. Your need has been answered, and now it is time to move on.
When people come into your life for a SEASON, it is because your turn has come to share, grow, or learn. They bring you an experience of peace, or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season.
LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons; things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person, and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

The Rabbits Who Caused All the Trouble
Within the memory of the youngest child there was a family of rabbits who lived near a pack of wolves. The wolves announced that they did not like the way the rabbits were living. (The wolves were crazy about the way they themselves were living, because it was the only way to live.) One night several wolves were killed in an earthquake and this was blamed on the rabbits, for it is well known that rabbits pound on the ground with their hind legs and cause earthquakes. On another night one of the wolves was killed by a bolt of lightning and this was also blamed on the rabbits, for it is well known that lettuce-eaters cause lightning. The wolves threatened to civilize the rabbits if they didn't behave, and the rabbits decided to run away to a desert island. But the other animals, who lived at a great distance, shamed them, saying, “You must stay where you are and be brave. This is no world for escapists. If the wolves attack you, we will come to your aid, in all probability.” So the rabbits continued to live near the wolves and one day there was a terrible flood which drowned a great many wolves. This was blamed on the rabbits, for it is well known that carrot-nibblers with long ears cause floods. The wolves descended on the rabbits, for their own good, and imprisoned them in a dark cave, for their own protection.
When nothing was heard about the rabbits for some weeks, the other animals demanded to know what had happened to them. The wolves replied that the rabbits had been eaten and since they had been eaten the affair was a purely internal matter. But the other animals warned that they might possibly unite against the wolves unless some reason was given for the destruction of rabbits. So the wolves gave them one. “They were trying to escape,” said the wolves, “and, as you know, this is no world for escapists.”
People need homes: children assume their parents“ place as home; boarders call school home on weekdays; married couples work together to build new homes; and travelers have no place to call home , at least for a few nights.
So how about people who have to travel for extended periods of time? Don t they have the right to a home? Of course they do.
Some regular travelers take their own belongings: like bed sheets, pillowcases and family photos to make them feel like home no matter where they are; some stay for long periods in the same hotel and as a result become very familiar with service and attendants; others may simply put some flowers by the hotel window to make things more homely. Furthermore, driving a camping car during one s travels and sleeping in the vehicle at night is just like home -- only mobile!
And how about maintaining relationships while in transit? Some keep contact with their friends via internet; some send letters and postcards, or even photos; others may just call and say hi, just to let their friends know that they”re still alive and well. People find ways to keep in touch. Making friends on the way helps travelers feel more or less at home. Backpackers in youth hostels may become very good friends, even closer than siblings.
Nowadays, fewer people are working in their local towns, so how do they develop a sense of belonging? Whenever we step out of our local boundaries, there is always another home waiting to be found. Wherever we are, with just a little bit of effort and imagination, we can make the place we stay home .

It's pretty safe to say that we'd all like to come across as well-informed, knowledgeable, and smart. Society values experts and rewards them, so we benefit when we're seen as having a certain level of command in what we do and what we speak about. While it's certainly positive to better ourselves in this regard, it can be a dangerous path to go down if we're focused too much on perceived expertise and intelligence during our interactions with others.
As we seek to better ourselves in our fields of work, we may notice our vocabulary shifting to defend our newfound status. We don't admit our shortcomings for fear of becoming vulnerable to criticism, and we stop acknowledging others to preserve our own ranking. However, what this behavior turns one into is not an expert but a know-it-all. To avoid becoming the latter, make a conscious effort to continue to implement the following three phrases into your daily interactions. True experts who know their value and don't question their own intelligence use these phrases regularly. It doesn't make them sound unsure or unreliable, it makes them sound smart.
1. “What do you think?” Taking the time to consider multiple ideas―especially those of others―shows you're smart enough to do your research. Know-it-alls resist input from others and put themselves in situations where they make more mistakes (and also turn off everyone around them). If you're smart, you'll want to seek out the ideas and opinions of others to better inform your own.
2. “I was wrong.” Know-it-alls let their pride get the best of them and aren't able to admit failure. Recognizing when you've erred, learning from it, and then quickly moving forward is the sign of a truly mature, well-functioning adult. Everyone makes mistakes, and they're necessary to grow and improve.“
3. Say nothing at all. While this isn't a phrase, choosing when to refrain from speaking is just as important as deciding what to say. Even if you're well-versed in the subject, don't dominate the conversation. Let others speak. You'll learn more from hearing what others have to say and become even smarter.

Is It Smart to Marry for Money
(1) 0ver at our fellow WSJ blog, The Wallet, there's a provocative Q & A with the authors of a new book called smart Girl Marry Money, a satirical self-help book which has a serious mission: to get women and men to talk more about marriage and finances.
The book came into being when the two working-mom authors, Ford and Drake, M.D., met while picking up their young children from preschool. (2)They noticed that the moms who were able to spend the most time with their kids were the ”moms who hadn't necessarily taken their careers seriously and married someone with money,“ said Dr. Drake in the interview. ”It became a joke that if we were smart, we would have married for money.“
The authors aren't saying that every woman should aspire to marry a rich guy. But they argue that marriage shouldn't just be about love---it should also be an economic partnership (as marriage traditionally was for centuries.) Women and men should be more upfront about marriage and money, instead of entering marriage starry-eyed without considering the financial future.
Dr. Drake, in the interview, also asserted that women shouldn't abandon their careers, in case of a spouse's illness or divorce. ”It's an important asset,“ she said. (The full Q & A can be found here.)
The interview struck a chord for me: I happen to know quite a few women, especially back in New York, for whom the net worth of their potential spouses or at least their earning potential-was an important factor in determining suitability for marriage. I'm not saying these women married solely for money, but it was a key consideration. Now, after having children---or in some cases, after marriage none of these women work.
Readers, do you know women or men who have married for money? How important, honestly, were financial considerations when evaluating your partner?
1. Over at our fellow WSJ blog, The Wallet, there's a provocative Q & A with the authors of a new book called ”Smart Girls Marry Money,“ a satirical self-help book which has a serious mission: to get women and men to talk more about marriage and finances.
Over at...there's a provocative Q & A..., 其中The Wallet是前面WSJ blog的同位语。
2. They noticed that the moms who were able to spend the most time with their kids were the ”moms who hadn't necessarily taken their careers seriously and married someone with money,“ said Dr. Drake in the interview.
said Dr. Drake in the interview前的内容是said的宾语。

Do You Have to Be a Workaholic to Rise High in Your Job
(1) It's clear, from Supreme Court nominee Sotomayor's Senate confirmation hearings, that she has a warm relationship with her family and friends, including her beloved mother and brother.
But in her rise through the legal profession, she has made a number of personal sacrifices, most notably marriage and children.
Ms. Sotomayor's marriage to her high-school sweetheart ended after just a few years,in part, she has said, because of an excessive work schedule. ”I cannot attribute that divorce to work,“ she told a panel on judicial life. (2) ”But certainly the fact that I was leaving my home at 7:00am and getting back at 10:00pm was not of assistance in the problems developing in my marriage.“
”I have found it difficult to maintain a relationship while I've pursued my career,“ Ms. Sotomayor also said in a television interview.
Ms. Sotomayor was subsequently engaged, but that 8-year relationship ended, too before they went to the altar. She has no children. These days, her life is ”frantically busy, fulfilling and often aloof,“ according to the New York Times. ”You make play dates with her months and months in advance because of her schedule,“ a friend of hers told the New York Times.
Earlier this week, we discussed Jack Welch's views on work-life balance. He argued that for women to rise to the top, ”they've got to make tough choices and know the consequences of each one.“
But such choices aren't just necessary for women, as Juggle readers have pointed out. Men, too, often make hard sacrifices (failed marriages, missing their children grow up) to reach the pinnacles of their careers, especially in our increasingly workaholic and wired culture.
As the New York Times columnist Brooks put it: ”This is the story of pressures that affect men as well as women (men are just more likely to make fools of themselves in response, as the news of the last few years indicates). (3) It's the story of people in a meritocracy that gets more Purified and competitive by the years with the time demands growing more and more insistent.“
He adds that Ms. Sotomayor's life ”overlaps with a broader class of high achievers. You don't succeed at that level without developing a single-minded focus, and struggling against its consequences.“
(4)I find this all a bit depressing and reductive because it seems like those who make it to the top must be, by necessity, workaholic automatons. I wonder, Juggle readers, is it ever possible to rise high in a profession without being an unceasing, laser-focused workaholic? Are there examples in your own workplaces of people who have managed that feat?

When the Kids' Favorite Toy Is Daddy's iPhone
Yesterday, my toddler broke another toy. But this wasn't an inexpensive, plastic doo-dad. It was my husband's iPhone.
Like many parents these days, my husband and I sometimes band over our smartphones to our son to soothe him or keep him entertained. It's partly laziness on our party---no other toy, it seems, can captivate him like the iPhone or BlackBerry. He's fascinated by the buttons and touchscreen, the sounds and lights. He hold it up to his ear and pretends he's making an important business call (or arranging a playdate with his best friend.) He somehow even managed to reprogram my BlackBerry to autotype in the Catalan language.
(1) When we take away the BlackBerry or iPhone he wails; no other plaything even a pretty realistic toy cellphone satisfies him as much. (The marketing copy for the toy phone says “This authentic looking play phone will surely distract your child from getting a hold of your cell phone!” Ha! I wish.)
We often hide our phones-we don't want him to ruin them or grow too dependent on them but be almost always tracks them down once he hears the ring or the buzz of an incoming message. (Hiding a phone is tough, however, for those parents who need to have phones handy in case they're on call or the office beckons.) (2) And when we pick up the phone or check messages, that only makes our son want the phone more, since he always wants whatever is in our hands.
Invariably, my son sticks the phone in his mouth and it ends up slobbery and pocked with bitemarks. Or when be eventually tires of the phone, he'll toss it aside, which is how my husband's iPhone met its recent doom.
We're not alone in using our cellphones as high-tech rattles. (3) The AP recently ran a story on how more parents are downloading kid-friendly apps, such as white noise and rattle sounds and easy video games, to their cellphones. And according to a recent NPR report, one parent to encourage his 11-month-old baby to crawl, waves his Blackberry so the baby will crawl toward the gadget.
Readers, do you ever resort to handing over your smartphones to your kids? Any horror stories? Any good kid-friendly apps to recommend?
