Life is A Journey

by Jack London

From the hell to the heaven,

There's no straight way to walk.

Sometimes up, sometimes down.

Hope creates a heaven for us,

Despair makes a hell for us.

Some choices are waiting for me,

Which one on earth is better?

No God in the world can help me,

Choosing is the byname of freedom,

Different choice makes different future.

It's stupid to put eyes on others.

I have to make up my own mind,

Going my way to the destination.

Facing success or failure,

It's no need to care too much.

Only if I've tried my best,

It's enough for my simple life.

How wonderful are islands! Islands in space, like this one I have come to, ringed about by miles of water, linked by on bridges, no cables, no telephones.

An lsland from the world and the world's life. Islands is time, like this short vacation of mine.

The past and the future are cut off: only the present remains.

One lives like a child or a saint in the immediacy of here and now.

Every day, every act, is an island, washed by time and space, and has an island's completion.

People, too, become like islands in such an atmosphere, self-contained, whole and serene; respecting other people's solitude, not intruding on their shores, standing back in revernce before the miracle of another individual.

“No man is an island,” said John Donne. I feel we are all islands--in a common sea.

We are all, in the last analysis, alone.

And this basic state of solitude is not something we have any choice about.

It is , as the poet Rilke says, “not something that one can take or leave”.

We are solitary. We may delude ourselves and act as though this were not so, yes, even to begin by assuming it.“Naturally,” he goes on to say,“we will turn giddy.”

We seem so frightened today of being alone that we never let it happen. Even if family, friends, and movies should fail, there is still the radio or television to fill up the void.

Women, who used to complain of loneliness, need never be alone any more.

We can do our housework with soap-opera heroes at our side. Even day-dreaming was more creative than this; it demanded something of oneself and it fed the inner life.

Now instead of planting our solitude with our dream bolssoms, we choke the space with continuous music, chatter and companionship to which we do not even listen.

It is simply there to fill the vacuum. When the noise stops there is no inner music to take its place. We must relearn to be alone.

Being still, staring at me, he wonders how much longer till I 1)break. My opponent thinks I am weaker now and for good reason, I have shown too much weakness already and I am weary from the battle. Still I continue, but often wonder if I am fighting a war that cannot be won.

I have heard the stories of my opponent over and over, how he is cunning, 2)baffling and powerful. I see the signs as I sit with the other soldiers discussing strategies, the signs that say “Take it slow” and “Don't give up.”

As I watch my opponent, I think about my training with the other soldiers, the 3)pep talks and the heartfelt conversation over endless pots of coffee. The 4)long hours studying our manuals and preparing for battle. I think about the ones that didn't make it, the ones that trained so hard and yet somehow 5)fell prey to the enemy.

The questions start, they seem to have no end. How did this war ever start? Why am I in this battle? Why was I chosen? What are my family and friends on the outside doing? Why are they not here with me? Do they even realize this is war?

My enemy has allies. Sometimes they do not even realize they are allies. Sometimes my enemy 6)turns on his allies and they find themselves right beside me in the 7)trenches. As the battle carries on, I start to understand more and more about my 8)worthy opponent. I learn his many strengths and his few weaknesses.

The battle continues and I finally start to realize how much my enemy has gotten inside my head, how he has 9)infiltrated me and broke through my defenses. Before long I find myself 10)overpowered, weak and scared. I start to question my decisions for choosing the side I am on. I consider 11)defecting and joining my enemy, still knowing he will eventually turn on me just as he always has in the past. I start to look around, getting lost in my own thoughts and 12)delusions.

I turn to my team but quickly realize I am all alone. At first I thought they had turned back and left me, but the truth is I am the one who took the wrong turn. While sinking down into my fears and insecurities I look up to see my enemy standing in front of me, staring me down. This is it, 13)moment of truth! I know he is more powerful than me and I know I cannot beat him on my own.

Do I surrender? Do I call for 14)backup and risk others getting hurt? I hesitate as I have so many times, wondering if I will lose again because of my hesitation.

As I see the sweat rolling down my enemy's neck, I slowly reach to draw my weapons, but I have no defense left for this opponent. In a moment of clarity, I realize what I must do.

With my eyes closed tight and fist 15)clinched I call for my leader and ask for help. I stand there shaking, confused and scared, wondering if he will send rescue one more time.

With uncertainty overwhelming me and fear drowning out all other emotions, I see them out of the corner of my eye. They stand strong beside me and tell me my enemy will not win today. With the strength of the army that stands beside me, I reach for my enemy and in an instant 16)slam him against the wall! Still shaken by fear I watch my 17)shattered opponent 18)pour out onto the floor.

I felt a chill as I 19)savor the sweet taste of victory, yet I also feel humbled when my more experienced teammates remind me that the war is not over, nor will it ever be. As I meet with my leader to discuss my mistakes and his plan to help me avoid making them again, he reminds me not to 20)stray from the team, the enemy will always find me.

With my hurt pride, tired soul and scattered mind, I thank him for his guidance and I vow to try harder. As I am reminded by one of the senior soldier that the battle will resume tomorrow and my enemy is now inside me, I realize once again I have found my 21)serenity, just for today.

Chopsticks. Right now, millions of people are digging into their food with two sticks that have stood the test of time as a utensil for humans, even when countless thousands of other tools, gadgets and products haven't. But what's so special about them?

What can we learn from mere chopsticks?

Personally, I have used them all my life, but it was only recently I realised the depth of influence they had in many people's way of life. They teach us the importance of:

Simplicity. They can come in all kinds of colours and sizes but essentially they are just two long sticks. There's hardly anything more simple than two bits of wood being pushed together. With new technology being released everyday and adverts bombarding us with the need to be able to do more with less, multi-tasking and multiple-use devices, it is sort of refreshing to still have something which has just one use—simply to eat. Chopsticks are a living example that simplicity simply works, and we don't need to keep developing, improving and fixing things all the time.

Versatility. Chopsticks can be used for picking up all kinds of food; meat, veg, rice, even the bones from fish, because by nature, their simplicity means that they are adaptable. Instead of aiming for a niche in an attempt to find a “gap in the market”, or to fill a hole that probably doesn't need filling, they cater to a wide range purposes. Imagine being like chopsticks in this way, able to appeal to many people because you are useful, without worrying about being “more innovative” or “better” in anyway. They just do what they are made to do; they just are.

Aim. If you've ever tried using them, you know that you can't get what you want by just haphazardly stabbing at the plate. To be able to get what you want, you have to aim for it. There's no way you can pick up everything in one go. Know what you want, and just do it. Sometimes, a little bit of focus makes the difference between failure and success.

Practice. Using chopsticks doesn't come naturally. You have to learn to use them and practice it. But how will you learn? Should you just read about it? Most would agree that there's no better way to practice than to look at the delicious food in front of you and tell yourself that you can't have any until you can use the chopsticks to get it. In real life, you can read as much as you like about all the things you want to do, but it will just amount to dreams and theory if you don't try actually doing it. Don't just watch others eating, put yourself out there and give the chopsticks a go.

Slowing Down. A common health tip is to try to eat with chopsticks when you can. Why? Because it slows you down and allows your stomach to tell your brain you're full before you overeat. Eating with chopsticks is a slower process, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes we need to slow down and take things one step at a time, break it down at each stage so that we have time to think, to realise that we're actually full and that we don't have to keep charging full speed through life.

Sometimes it's nice to enjoy each morsel of life as it comes.

Life comes in a package. This package includes happiness and sorrow, failure and success, hope and despair. Life is a learning process. Experiences in life teach us new lessons and make us a better person. With each passing day we learn to handle various situations.

Love爱

Love plays a pivotal role in our life. Love makes you feel wanted. Without love a person could go haywire and also become cruel and ferocious. In the early stage of our life, our parents are the ones who showed us with unconditional love and care, they teach us about what is right and wrong, good and bad. But we always tend to take this for granted. It is only after marriage and having kids that a person understands and becomes sensitive to others feelings. Kids make a person responsible and mature and help us to understand life better.

Happiness and Sorrow

Materialistic happiness is short-lived, but happiness achieved by bringing a smile on others face gives a certain level of fulfillment. Peace of mind is the main link to happiness. No mind is happy without peace. We realize the true worth of happiness when we are in sorrow. Sorrow is basically due to death of a loved one, failure and despair. But these things are temporary and pass away.

Failure and Success

Failure is the path to success. It helps us to touch the sky, teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way. Success brings in money, fame, pride and self-respect. Here it becomes very important to keep our head on our shoulder. The only way to show our gratitude to God for bestowing success on us is by being humble, modest, courteous and respectful to the less fortunate ones.

Hope and Despair

Hope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope builds in patience. Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there is a day. Nothing remains the same we have only one choice - keep moving on in life and be hopeful.

Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday, for it has passed and is beyond our control. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dull. So the only alternative is work hard today, so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow.
