I've heard from and talked to many people who described how Mother Nature simplified their lives for them. They'd lost their home and many or all of their possessions through tires, floods, earthquakes, or some other disaster. Losing everything you own under such circumstances can be distressing, but the people I've heard from all saw their loss. ultimately, as a blessing.
“The fire saved us the agony of deciding what to keep and what to get rid of,” one woman wrote. And once all those things were no longer there, she and her husband saw how they had weighed them down and complicated their lives.
“There was to much stuff we never used and that was just taking up space- We vowed when we started over we'd replace only what we needed, and this time we'd do it right. We've kept our promise: we don't have much now, but what we have is exactly what we want.”
Though we've never had a catastrophic loss such as that, Gibbs and I did have a close call shortly before we decided to simplify. AI that time we lived in a fire zone. One night a firestorm raged through and destroyed over six hundred homes in our community. That tragedy gave us the opportunity to look objectively atthe goods we'd accumulated.
We saw that there was so much we could get rid of and not only never miss, but be better off without. Having almost lost it all. we found it much casier to let go of the things we knew we'd never use again.
Obviously, there's a tremendous difference between getting rid of possessions and losing them through a natural disaster without having a say in the matter. And this is not to minimize the tragedy and pain such aloss can generate.
But you might think about how you would approach the acquisition process if you had to do all over again. Look around your home and make a list or what you would replace.
Make another fist of things you wouldn't acquire again no matter what, and in fact would be happy to be rid of.
When you're ready to start unloading some of your stuff, that list will be a good place to start.
l.Many people whose possessions were destroyed in natural disasters eventually considered their loss________________.
2.After all their possessions were last in the fire, the woman and her husband felt that their lives were____________________.
3.What do we know about the author's house from the sentence “Gibbs and I did have a close call...” (Lines 1-2, Para. 4.)?
4.According to the author, getting rid of possessions and losing them through a natural disaster are vastly____________________.
5.What does the author suggest people do with unnecessary things?
答案:
1.[a blessing]
2.[simplified]
[定位]根据her husband和their lives查找到第2段末句。
3.[It narrowly escaped the firestorm.]
Gibbs and I did have a close call...
It narrowly escaped the firestorm。
4.[different]
5.[Be/Get rid of them.]
[定位]根据do with unnecessary things查找到倒数第2段。
Be/Get rid of them.

Anne Whitney, a sophomore (大学二年级学生) at Colorado State University, first had a problem taking tests when she began college. “I was always well prepared for my tests. Sometimes I studied for weeks before a test. Yet I would go in to take the test, only to find I could not answer the questions correctly. I would blank out because of nervousness and fear. I couldn't think of the answer. My low grades on the tests did not show what I knew to the teacher. ” Another student in biology had similar experiences. He said, “My first chemistry test was very difficult. Then, on the second test, I sat down to take it, and I was so nervous that I was shaking. My hands were moving up and down so quickly that it was hard to hold my pencil. I knew the material and I knew the answers. Yet I couldn't even write them down!”
These two young students were experiencing something called test anxiety. Because a student worries and is uneasy about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student cannot write or think clearly because of the extreme tension and nervousness. Although poor grades are often a result of poor study habits, sometimes test anxiety causes the low grades. Recently, test anxiety has been recognized as a real problem, not just an excuse or a false explanation of lazy students.
Special university advising courses try to help students. In these courses, advisors try to help students by teaching them how to manage test anxiety. At some universities, students take tests to measure their anxiety. If the tests show (heir anxiety is high, the students can take short courses to help them deal with (heir tensions. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies. Students are trained to become calm in very tense situations. By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work at ease. Learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test.
An expert at the University of California explains, “ With almost all students, relaxation and less stress are felt after taking our program. Most of them experience better control during their tests. Almost all have some improvement. With some, the improvement is very great. ”
26. To “blank out” is probably______.
A. to be like a blanket B. to be sure of an answer
C. to be unable to think clearly D. to show knowledge to the teacher
27. Poor grades are usually the result of______.
A. poor sleeping habit B. laziness
C. lack of sleep D. inability to form good study habits
28. Test anxiety has been recognized as______.
A. an excuse for laziness B. the result of poor study habits
C. a real problem D. something that cannot be changed
29. To deal with this problem, students say they want to______.
A. take a short course on anxiety
B. read about anxiety
C. be able to manage or understand their anxiety
D. take tests to prove they are not anxious
30. A University of California advisor said______.
A. all students could overcome the anxiety after taking a special test anxiety program
B. almost all students felt less stress after taking a University of California advising course
C. students found it difficult to improve even though they had taken a special test anxiety course
D. students found it easy to relax as soon as they entered a University of California advising course

It is all very well to blame traffic jams, the cost of petrol and the quick pace of modern life, but mannerson the roads are becoming horrible.Everybody knows that the nicest men become monsters behind the wheel.Itis all very well, again,to have a tiger in the tank, but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter altogether. You might tolerate the odd road-hog(莽撞驾车者),the rude and inconsiderate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule.Perhaps the situation calls for a “Be Kind to Other Drivers”campaign, otherwise it may get completely out of hand.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too.It takes the most cool-headed and good-tempered of drivers to resist the temptation to revenge when subjected to uncivilized behavior. On the other hand,a little politeness goes a long way towards relieving the tensions of motoring.A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgement in response to an act of politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous.Typical examples are the driver who brakes violently toallow a car to emerge from a side street at some hazard to following traffic, when a few seconds later the road would be clear anyway;or the man who waves a child across a zebra crossing into the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they care to.It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodiesof these grannies.
A veteran driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if motorists learnt to filter correctlyinto traffic streams one at a time without causing the total blockages that give rise to bad temper.Unfortunately, modern motorists can't even learn to drive, let alone master the subtler aspects of roadsmanship.Years age the experts warned us that the car-ownership explosion would demand a lot more give-and-take from all road users. It is high fime for all of us to take this message to heart.
1.According to the passage, people's behaviors on the roads are becoming_____________________.
2.What does the author suggest in order to get control of the situation?
3.Drivers who can manage to control their impulse to revenge when they experience impolite behavior are considered as_________________by the author.
4.Encouraging old ladies to cross the road at the wrong moment is referred as______________by the author.
5.Experts have long pointed out that all road users should be ready to yield to each other due to______________________.
答案:
1.[horrible]
2.[A“Be Kind to Other Drivers”campaign.]
解析:原文中的get out of hand意为“失控”,与题干中的get control of“控制”刚好相反。
3.[the most cool-headed and good-tempered.]
解析:题干中的control their impulse to相当于原文的resist the temptation to,experience impolite behavior也是原文subjected to uncivilized behavior的同义替换。
4.[misplaced politeness]
[定位]根据题干中的encouraging old ladies to cross the road定位到第3段。
原文该段倒数第二句中的The same goes for指的就是这种行为。
5.[the car-ownership explosion]
Years ago the experts warned对应题干中的Experts have long pointed out,而be ready to yield toeach other是原文中demand a lot more give-and-take的同义替换,故原文该句that从句中的主语the car-ownership explosion部分即为答案。

Part III Reading Comprehension
Section A
26. [C] driven
27. [O] vulnerable
28. [E] malignant
29. [G] premises
30. [H] random
31. [K] temptation
32. [N] unique
33. [D] engaged
34. [J] spiritually
35. [B] closer
解析:
26题空格前的has been和后面的by fear,判断此处要填入一个动词的完成时,CD容易混淆,一般engaged会和in搭配,driven和by搭配,后面的题再经排除,可以锁定为C;
N unique.
Section B
36. [E] It seems some people today dream that a cutting-edge new technology ...
37. [I] According to one great thinker, It is most unfortunate if we lose the ability to think differently.
38. [C] urgent attention should be paid to…
39. [K] Even in the fast-food nation America, the number of vegetarians is on the rise.
40. [D] The deterioration of ecological system is accelerating…
41. [H] It is obvious that solutions must be….
42. [A] Many people believe changing in the world is possible…
43. [F] It might be wrong to expect that our world would be saved at one stroke…
44. [G] It is human nature to cheris hopes for a better world.
45. [B] Technology has given us humans the power to change the natural world
解析:
37题干中的绝对词the most unfortunate可以帮助定位I段的the most tragic form, 以及该段出现的哲学家对应题干的great thinker
38题干的关键信息是ecological problems和comfortable life,定位C段中出现in search for comfort,段尾出现的各种环境生态问题。
Section C
Passage One
46. [B] People’s reluctance to be compelled to eat plant-based food.
47. [C] Make them even more undernourished.
48. [B] Many people simply do not have access to foods they prefer.
49. [D] It may worsen the nourishment problem in low-income countries.
50. [A] It accepts them at the expense of the long-term interests of its people.
EAT-Lancet claimed its intention was to spark conversations among all Indian stakeholders”, 选项A中的“at the expense of ”, 译为“以…
Passage Two
51. C They constantly dismiss other’s proposals while taking no responsibility…
52. D A distinction should be drawn between responsibilty and fault.
53. A Stop them from going further by agreeing with them.
54. B They are prompted to come up with ideas for making possible changes.as
55. C Assuming responsibility to free oneself.
53 题是关于其他人如何跟习惯抱怨的人相处,一种应对策略,定位到第三段there’s an ingenious way to shut it down.

Some of the old worries about artificial intelligence were closely linked to the question of whether computers could think. The first massive electronic computers, capable of rapid calculation and little or no creative activity, were soon dubbed(取绰号)“electronic brains”.A reaction to this terminology quickly followed, computers were called“high speed idiots”,an effort to protect human vanity. But not everyone realized theimplications of the high-speed idiot tag.It has not been pointed out enough that even the human idiot is one of the most intelligent life forms on earth. If the early computers were even that intelligent,it was already a remarkable state of affairs.
One consequence of speculation about the possibility of computer thought was that we were forced to examine with new care the idea of thought in general. It soon became clear that we were not sure what we meant bysuch terms as thought and thinking. We tend to assume that human beings think, some more than others, though we often call people thoughtless or unthinking.Dreams cause a problem, partly because they usually happen outside our control. They are obviously some type of mental experience, but are they a type of thinking? And the question of nonhuman life forms adds further problems. Many of us would maintain that some of the higheranimals-dogs,cats,apes,and so on-are capable of at least basic thought, but what about fish and insects? If thinking is demonstrated by evident electrical activity in the brain, then many species are capable of thought.Once we have formulated clear ideas on what thought is in biological creatures,it will be easier to discuss the question of thought in artifacts(人工制品).And what is true of thought is also true of the many other mental processes. One of the immense benefits of a research is that we are being forced to scrutinize, with new rigor, the working of the human mind.
It is already clear that machines have superior mental abilities to many life forms. No fern or oak tree can play chess as well as even the simplest digital computer, nor can frogs weld car bodies as well as robots. It seems that, viewed in terms of intellect ,the computer should be set well above plants and most animals.Only the higher animals can compete with computers with regard to intellect and even then with diminishing success.
1.What did people think of the early computers?
2.According to the author, the early computers is__________________than human idiots.
3.As a result of speculating whether computer could think,we had to research more carefully to get_____________________.
4.Why do dreams cause the problem whether they are a type of thinking, according to the author?
5.What does the author want to illustrate by mentioning the fern and the oak tree?
答案:
1.[They were called“high speed idiots”/They can calculate rapidly but are idiots.]
2.[less intelligent]
3.[the idea of thought in general]
4.[Because they usually happen outside our control./Because they are usually beyond our control.
解析:原文提到Dreams cause a problem后即明确解释原因:partly because they usually happen outside our control,答案可以照搬原文,也可以用介词beyond进行同义改写。
5.[Machines have superior mental abilities to many life forms./Computers are more intelligent than plants and most animals.]

Taijiquan is precious wealth...and an important part...,系动词“是”(is)只需译出一个。
2.第2句中的“其主要功能是”可直译为its main functionsare to...,但稍显生硬,宜转述为“它通常用于”(it is usuallyused for...)。
处理为which引导的非限制性定语从句which,however, candefeat。
4.最后一句中的“在中国乃至世界受到越来越多人欢迎”,除译文外,还可以有多种译法,如is welcomed bymore and more people both in China and overseas;is accepted by more and more people inChina and the world as well。
Tajiquan is precious wealth of Chinese nation andan important part of the eastern culture. As one ofthe ancient martial arts in China, it is usually usedfor attacking and defending, body building and self-cultivation. When Tajiquan is being practiced, themovements are gentle and slow, which, however, can defeat the opponent with sudden strength. Through centuries of development, Taijiquanhas developed into several branches, and everyone has its features. Now Tajiquan has becomeincreasingly popular both in China and abroad.
With a long history, Jingdezhen is...,表达简洁紧凑。
In the Ming Dynasty, lots of Jingdezhen's chinaware was exported to foreign countries, greatly promoting...and extending... 。
Jingdezhen has earned the title of...,则会由于原因状语过长而使句子显得头重脚轻。 Jingdezhen has earned the title of..., thanks to...。
Jingdezhen, formerly named Changnan, is located inJiangxi Province. With a long history, Jingdezhen isone of the four famous towns in Chinese history.Jingdezhen is famous for its production of chinaware. It is recorded that Jingdezhen's production ofchinaware can date back to the Han Dynasty. In theMing Dynasty, lots of Jingdezhen's chinaware was exported to foreign countries, greatlypromoting the foreign trade of chinaware in Jingdezhen and extending the influence of Chinesechinaware. Jingdezhen has earned the title of “capital of chinaware”, thanks to its long history ofchinaware production, the excellent quality and large amount of export of its chinaware.
1.第1句由3个短句构成,第1个短句译成介词短语Withthesocial development或连词as引出的从句As the societydeveloped;第2个短句可处理为主句,当中的定语“需要计算的”可译为分词短语 needed to calculate,作后置定语;第3个短句则处理成用which引导的非限制性定语从句,套用make it impossible for sb./sth. to do sth.的结构,译成which made it impossible for the rods to fulfill the task,为了避免重复,把“完成计算”转译成了“完成任务”。
It is+ a. + to do sth.,译为Since it wasconvenient to use and easy to learn。
是对“珠心算”的补充说明,可用介词短语 with the image of an abacus in mind to calculate the figures 来表达。
The abacus is a great invention in ancient China. Inthe old times, people used small rods to count, Withthe social development, numbers needed tocalculate were increasingly greater, which made itimpossible for the rods to fulfill the task. Thus, people invented a more advanced calculating devicethe abacus. Since it was convenient to use and easy to learn, the abacus was widely used inChina.
It issaid that Jasmine flower is the first...,但不如译文说的Jasmine Flower is said to be the first...
“不少外国人学唱中文歌时首选这首歌”可逐字对译为 many foreigners who would like to learn to sing Chinese songs would first choose thissong,但译文繁冗拗口。根据“汉语多用动词,英语多用名词”的表达差异,考虑将“首选这首歌”译为the firstchoice,用结构 it is the first choice for sb.译出。
可套用句型sth brings sb. both... and...,故译为This songbrings us both great artistic enjoyment and pride。
Jasmine Flower is said to be the first Chinese folksong introduced to foreign countries. A lot ofscholars abroad have mentioned Jasmine Flowerwhen they study the history of Chinese music. It isthe first choice for many foreigners who would like tolearn to sing Chinese songs. In closing ceremony ofthe Athens Olympics, a Chinese girl sang this song, which greatly impressed all theaudiences. In Beijing Olympics, it was chosen as the music played in awarding ceremony. This song brings us both great artistic enjoyment and pride.
公里”可表达为is... kilometers long,也可表达为has a length of..., kilometers。 “仅次于”可以表达为only second to或second to,如“他举世无双”,译为 He is second to none。
The Yellow River has itsorigin in...,flows through..., and finally pours itself into...,但此种译法稍显生硬、平淡。 处理为状语,用介词短语With its origin in... “流经”、“流入渤海”,这里的“流”可译为flow,但为了避免用词重复、译文表达丰富,“流人渤海”可更换表达为 enter the sea, reach the sea 或 pours itself into the sea。
3.第3句中的原因状语“由于夹带了大量的泥沙”表达为because it carries a lot of silt。“呈黄色”表达为inyellow 或 in the color of yellow,介词 in 表示“处于某种状态”。
可直译为the Yellow River basin brings significant influenceto...”
The Yellow River is about 5,000 kilometers long. It isthe second longest river in China, only second to theYangtze River. With its origin in Qinghai Province, theYellow River flows through nine provinces of Chinasuch as Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu, Ningxia, andShanxi, and finally pours itself into the Bohai Sea.Because it carries a lot of silt, the water of the River is in yellow. In Chinese history, the YellowRiver basin influences Chinese civilization significantly and is also the major birthplace of Chinesenation. Therefore, the Yellow River is called “the Cradle of Chinese Civilization” and “MotherRiver” of China.
