Describe a piece of old equipment in your home

You should say

what it is;

how often you use it;

how long you have had it;

and explain why it is important in your home.

Well, to tell you the truth that we have thrown away quite a number of old equipments and bought some new ones for our home as we moved 3 times over the past two decades. However, there is still one old piece in our home, and that is an old chair made of wood.

It was my grandpa's favorite furniture while he was alive because he used it quite a lot. I remember it was in when my parents got that chair for him after we moved to a new apartment with a really nice balcony as my parents would like him to sit in the chair at the balcony and enjoy some sunshine after lunch. So far we've had it for almost 15 years.

You know, it is such an important furniture in our home as each time when we see it, it reminds us of our grandpa and those rewarding lectures he gave us. For instance, one of the most meaningful lectures he used to give us is on how to be a good and useful person to society and how to get along well with friends and colleagues.

And personally speaking, it also reminds me of the time when he used to take care of me while my parents went away for business. And what I love the most about that is he would cook some special dishes for me. Besides, he would also take me to a nearby supermarket for some delicious snacks when I asked.

To purchase a digital camera for my younger sister I had to save money for about 6 months. It was a Canon SLR camera that I knew she had a great desire to purchase. Since she is still in her college, it was really difficult for her to buy such a camera.

After I joined in a part time job, I planned to buy it for her. I wanted her to be happy with the camera and that’s the primary reasons I wanted to purchase it. I knew she has a talent in photography and that’s why I wanted her to have a good camera so that she gets inspired. After I went to some branded camera shops, I found that the camera would cost me a bit more that I would be able to effort. As I have joined a part time job at that time, it was not easy for me to instantly purchase the camera for my sister. Then I planned to save money for few months and then purchase it. I had to save money for 6-7 months and then I had been able to actually buy it.

Giving present or surprise gift to someone we care is more exciting and blissful than purchasing for ourselves. As her elder brother I wanted to give her the camera so that she becomes happy. I also wanted her to continue her hobby of photography which was quite tough without a good quality camera. For these reasons it was very important for me to purchase her the camera.

? It has been handed down from generation to generation in my family

? It is a gold necklace with matching earrings

? My mother wears it on special family occasions

? And the design is evergreen.

? Once my mother went to a goldsmith to get a similar set made for my aunt.

Ok right then, well after a bit of thought, the object that I'd like to talk about is my piano, as it's probably the oldest thing we have in our family.

And as for how we first got it, well I'm honestly not that sure, because it's been in the family for as long as I can remember. ButIthink I'm right in saying that my grandparents bought it, although I never actually asked them. And they passed the piano down to me, because I'm the only one of their grandchildren who plays the piano, so I feel very fortunate and grateful to have it.

Anyway, regarding the importance of it, well, simply speaking, I'd say it's extremely important, at least for me personally, the main reason being that it has a very strong sentimental value to me. You know, whenever I play the piano, it reminds me of my grandparents, especially my grandma, who used to always play it and sing to me when I was little.

So it really means a lot to me, and although it doesn't sound as good as a lot of pianos, I wouldn't change it for any other! Because um, how can I put it……um… I guess what I'm trying to say is that, to me, it's more than just a piano, you know, it's kind of a memento and something to remember my grandparents by.

So yeah, that's pretty much it.

Notes:

Sentimental value -

You use anyway or anyhow to indicate that you are missing out some details in a story and are passing on to the next main point or event.

how can I put it – 怎么说呢?

it's more than just a piano – 不仅仅是钢琴

Memento -

So yeah, that's pretty much it.

Other useful phrases:

There are a few scratches on it – 上面有些刮痕划痕

I polish it quite a lot to keep it looking nice –

An old thing that my family has kept for a long time is a vintage television. it’s now sitting on the top of the closet in my parents’ room.

Three times have we moved to a new house since i can remember, yet this tiny and old television always goes with us. Although we hardly use it for TVs with larger screen and more glamorous style is common and cheaper now, my parents still treasure it and dust it once in a while.

“It was the first thing my parents bought when they made quite a fortune by working day and night in their grocery store. In late 1980s, TV was still considered as a luxury, so being able to affort it gave them a sense of fulfillment. As for my sister and I, fighting for the remote controller to watch our favorite show was one of the most memorable things in our childhood.

This TV has witnessed almost every major changes in our family and contained loads of memories. Now with my sister and I always busy with our work, we don’t get much chance to go back home to visit our parents, not to mention sitting together watching TV programs after dinner as we used to. I guess the reason we think it’s so important is that it reminds us of a simpler but happier time.

这个不但可以作为a piece of equipment at your home的答案,还可以作为A gift that you recently gave to others的答案!

I’d like to talk about the decorative fish tank in our living room, which is a gift I gave to my dad on his 50th birthday. And it’s the first thing you see when you step into my place.

He has always been fascinated with fishes, but since my mom bought me a cat, he just had to … you know, give up that interest, ‘cause those two creatures are not designed to live under the same roof.

Anyway, it’s been a long time now, and my cat is getting old, I mean, he won’t jump around and chase moving stuff any more, so I thought it would be a good time for my dad to pick up the old hobby. So I just went ahead and bought him a huge fish tank where he could keep as many fishes as he wants.

My dad was thrilled when he saw the gift. We placed it in our living room, and the best thing about it is that it’s not only a fish tank, but can also serve as a coffee table. It’s about this long (body language这个时候派上用场了,拿手比划), and it’s adorned with precious stones. This tank has become my father’s favorite item in our home and he bought quite a few expensive tropical fish.

There are light bulbs on top of the tank, and when it’s getting dark, my dad likes to turn them on, and the whole living room would be lit up with the warm, soft light. So I have to say, it’s a great decoration.

And the fish tank is an advanced one. I mean, it’s equipped with a self-cleaning system that could filter the waste automatically. So the water is always crystal clear.

And the “view” (body language又出场了,请拿手指打引号) in the tank is gorgeous, I mean, if you look closer, it’s just like a real underwater world. It has seaweed, coral reefs, shells, everything you are supposed to see in the ocean.

So both of my dad and my mom are pretty satisfied with this gift.

1. decorative

(Of an object or a building) decorated in a way that makes it attractive; intended to look attractive or pretty. 例如:

The mirror is functional yet decorative.

The decorative touches have made this house a warm and welcoming home.

2. place

A house or flat / apartment; a person’s home. 例如:

What about dinner at my place?

I’m fed up with living with my parents, so I’m looking for a place of my own.

3. thrilled

Very excited and pleased.

I was thrilled to be invited.

The kids are really psyched about the vacation.

4. adorn

To make something/ somebody look more attractive by decorating it or them with something.

The walls were adorned with paintings.

I bought an exquisite Murano glass figurine of Pegasus(穆拉诺人马座玻璃小雕像) when I traveled in Venice.

It is about twelve inches high, really heavy and gorgeously-wrought sculpted (错彩镂金雕刻)glass with real gold spun through the wings, mane and tail. I fell in love with it when I saw it at the glass factory. It was said to be 50 years old and thus hideously(可怕地) expensive, but I rationalized (使合理化)that it would be my one souvenir from that first European trip. So I put it on my credit card and had it shipped to China.

My precious(珍贵的) artwork arrived a few weeks after I returned home. I unwrapped(打开)it and placed it carefully on a bookshelf in my new apartment. I stood and admired it, then went to open the blinds(百叶窗)so the sun could hit it, miscalculated(算错) my reach and knocked Pegasus right onto my newly waxed hardwood floor.

Of course it broke, but not completely. That was the worst part. Both wings broke off and one front leg was shattered. But my mother thought it might be salvageable(可挽救的). She found a glass artist in Shanghai who did his best to repair it. And he did a fair job. But I could never see it the same way again. When I looked at it, I only saw how lovely it had been before my clumsiness(笨拙的)ruined it. It hurt to have broken Pegasus in my living room. So I packed it away.

I still have it. Five years later. I have never re-opened the box, but I can't bring myself to throw it away.

Some of the books which once owned and used by my grandfather are still kept with care in our house. My grandfather was a doctor and he kept his medical books and reference books with him. When he died, I was a 5 years old kid and can hardly remember things about him. But I heard that he was a great person and a first-class(一流的) doctor. Everyone in our locality revered (尊敬)him and respected him very much. After his death, my father took one of his used tables, an arm chair, and a big portrait(肖像) of my grand grand-father and some of my grandfather’s books as the remembrance of his memory. Among those things my grandfather’s medical books survived and are still reserved in our book-shelf.

These books would be more than 70-80 years old and we have those books in our shelf for the last 20 years. The caretakers sometimes bring out those books and clean those and finally put them in the shelf again. I once opened some of the books when I was a school boy and found almost everything very obscure(难以理解). Basically they are medical related terms and that's why seemed jargon to me.

My family has kept these books as the souvenir of my grandfather's memory. My father was very beloved by my grandfather and I am sure he esteemed(尊敬) my grandfather very much. These books are the only tangible(有形的) belongings my father has which were used by my grandfather and conveys my grandfather's reminiscences(回忆). Though these books do not have their material values but they are priceless(无价的) to our family and remind us the precious memory of our grandfather.

Describe your job in detail.

I am an Engineer. Allow me to explain myself by shortly mentioning the following points: Firstly, I work for a large construction company. To be more precise, we specialize in the building of railway bridges. Secondly, I would like to mention that I am in the designing department. We have to look at the site for a new bridge, and then decide what type of bridge will be suitable. Lastly, we have to make recommendations to the railway company of all the alternatives, and give them some idea of the costs.

Is your job important to you?

That’s a broad question. Allow me to explain by shortly mentioning the following points: First of all, my job is important to me because by doing it I can serve my community and my country. For example, when my company builds a new road, many people benefit from our work. Secondly, it makes me feel good about myself. For instance, I am earning enough money to be able to rent my own apartment.

Topic Sentence

Supporting Ideas

Examples

For example,First , secondly, last but not the least来讲分论点,但这样给考官的感觉是在背作文,而不是真正的口语。 最好用well , also , actually ,as a matter of fact , you know 等等词。
