一.几个基本概念1.定语从句的定义:用作定语的从句叫定语从句。
2.先行词:被定语从句所修饰的名词或代词。
3.定语从句的位置:紧跟先行词(名词或代词)之后。
4.引导词:引导定语从句的词(包括关系代词和关系副词)。
(1)关系代词:that/who/whom/which/as
(2)关系副词:when/where/why
5.引导词的位置:位于定语从句之前(先行词之后)。【as除外】
6.引导词的功能(作用):
(1)连接先行词和定语从句。
(2)在定语从句中充当一定的成分(关系代词充当主语或宾语,关系副词充当状语)。
7.定语从句的类型:
(1)限定性定语从句(主句和定语从句之间无逗号)。
① 直接由引导词引导定语从句
The man who you’re talking to is my friend.
② 由介词+关系代词(whom/which)引导
The man to whom you’re talking is my friend.

除why和that不能引导非限定性定语从句外,其余引导词都可以,用法同限定性定语从句一样。但要注意以下区别。
1.在形式上非限定性定语从句与主句有逗号隔开。
2.非限定性定语从句的作用:它只是补充说明先行词的情况,翻译时可译成两个句子。

二.定语从句中关系代词和关系副词的基本用法
1.who/that指人是主格在定语从句中代替先行词,又作定语从句的主语,不能省略。
Do you know the gentleman who/that is sitting there?
2.whom/who/that指人是宾格,在定语从句中代替先行词,又作定语从句的宾语(动宾或介宾)。
① 当作动宾(动词后接宾语)时,关系代词可省略。
Do you know the gentleman (whom/who/that) we met just now?
② 当作介宾(介词后接宾语)时:
介词不提前时,关系代词可省略;
介词提前时,关系代词不可省,即介词+whom(指人时介词后的关系代词只能用whom)。

4.which/that 指物,指代先行词且在定语从句中作主语或宾语(动宾或介宾)。
① 当作动宾时,关系代词可省略。
② 当作介宾时:
介词不提前时,关系代词可省略;
介词提前时,关系代词不可省,即介词+which(指物时介词后的关系代词只能用which)。

2. 定语从句的引导词
1) that, who, whom: 非限制性定语从句, 如果修饰人, 一般用who,有时用that (作主语时用who较多). 如果关系代词在从句中作宾语, 就应当用宾格 whom 或that,但在大多数情况下都可以省略掉, 在口语中可用who代替whom.

2. The desks (which/that) we made last year were very good.

4. I live in the room whose windows face south. (= I live in the room ,the windows of which face south.)
注:
A. 介词如果位于作为其宾语的关系代词之前时,只能用whom、which不能用who或that.
(1). The girl about whom they were talking is our monitor.
(2). The book in which there are many interesting things was written by Li Ming.
B. 部分短语动词中的介词不可与动词拆开,在定语从句中其介词不可前置,只能放在其动词之后。

C. 指物时,下列情况下只能用that ,不宜用which。
(1)先行词为不定代词,如All、much、anything、everything、nothing、something、none、the one等。

I have told them all (that) I know.
All that can be done has been done.
(2)先行词是序数词或被序数词、修饰时。
The first book that I read last night was an English novel.
(3)先行词是形容词最高级或被最高级修饰时。
This is one of the most interesting films that I have ever seen.
This is the best that can be done now.
(4)如果有两个或两个以上分别表示人和物的先行词时(先行词既有人又有物),定语从句的关系代词用which和who都不合适,只能用that。

(5)如果先行词被the only、the very、the last、the same、any、few 、little、no、all 、one of、just修饰时。

先研究下面两个例句:
○1.This elephant is like a snake, as /which everybody can see. =As everybody can see, this elephant is like a snake. 任何人都看得出来,这头象像条蛇。
○2.Tom didn’t pass the physics exam, which made his parents very angry. Tom物理考试不及格,这使得他父亲很生气。
这两个例句中,as和which所代表的都是整个主句所表示的内容。但有两点不同之处:
1. 在形式上as引导的非限制性定语从句可位于主句的后面,也可位于主句的前面;而which引导的非限制性定语从句只能位于主句的后面,不能位于主句的前面。
2. 在意义上,as引导的定语从句和主句的关系一般为一致关系,常译为“正如……”,“就像……”,而which引导的定语从句和主句的关系是因果关系,或which引导的定语从句是对主句的评论。因此,在意思通顺的情况下,which可代替as,而as许多时候不能代替which,如句○2。再如:
1.He was late again, as / which we had expected. =As we had expected, he was late again. 正如我们所料,他又迟到了。/他又迟到了这是我们早就料到的。
2. The street hasn’t been cleared for weeks, which makes it very dirty. 街道好多星期没有打扫了,因此整条街很脏。(不用as)
3.The young man cheated his friend of much money, which was disgraceful. 那年轻人诈骗了他朋友许多钱财,这是不光彩的。(不 用as)
4.He takes exercise everyday, which has done a lot of good to his health. 他每天运动,这对他的身体很有好处。(不用as)
5.As has already been pointed out, English is rather difficult for a foreigner. 正如已经指出的那样,英语对于初学者说,是相当难学的。在such…as…、the same…as…、as…、as many…/much as…等结构中,as不能用which代替。如:

这一结构后面的定语从句的谓语动词通常用复数形式,跟定语从句所*近的那个复数名词在数上保持一致。如:

2. This is one of the most wonderful novels that have been published since 1990.
3. She is one of the few persons who know Spanish .
4. This is one of the most famous plays that were written in the thirties,
如果one of +复数名词这一结构前面带有the only、the very之类的限定语,后面定语从句的谓语动词则要用单数形式,这是因为定语从句在意义上修饰的是而不是那个复数名词。如:
1.He is the only one of the teachers who knows French in our school.( 修饰the only one)
He is one of the teachers who know French in our school.( 修饰the teachers)
2.This is the only one of the rooms that is free now. (修饰the only one)

as与which引导的定语从句
两者均可引导非限制性定语从句,有时可以互换,但下列情况多用as。
1. 关系代词引导的定语从句居句首时。 As we all know, the earth is round.
2. 当与such或the same连用时,一般用as。 Such books as you tell me are interesting. I have the same plan as you.
3. 当从句和主句语义一致时,用as,反之则用which。 She has married again, as was expected. She has married again, which was unexpected.
4. as在从句中作主语时,后面常接行为动词的被动语态,如be known,be said,be reported等,如从句中行为动词是主动语态,一般要用which作主语。
She has been late again, as was expected.

二、定语从句的类型:根据从属连词的不同可以将定语从句分为三种类型:关系代词引导的定语从句,关系副词引导的定语从句,和as/which引导的非限制性定语从句。
1. 关系代词引导的定语从句
在这一类从句中需要注意的是关系代词在句子中所起的作用。首先,关系代词连接主句和从句;其次关系代词指代所修饰的先行词;最后关系代词往往在从句中做主语或者宾语,且做主语时关系代词不能省略,做宾语时可以省略。
例1:He who laughs last laughs best. (笑到最后的人笑得最美。)
分析:who引导定语从句修饰主句的主语he,且在从句中做主语,不能省略。
例2:He is collecting authentic material which can prove his argument. (他正在收集确凿的证据以证明他的观点。)

(一)定义及相关术语
1.定语从句:修饰某一名词或代词的从句叫定语从句。定语从句一般紧跟在它所修饰的先行词之后。

关系词有关系代词和关系副词。关系代词有that, which, who, whom, whose, as等;关系副词有when, where, why等。
关系词通常有下列三个作用:A、引导定语从句;B、代替先行词;C、在定语从句中担当一个成分。例如:
The man who is shaking hands with my father is a policeman. 该句中,who is shaking hands with my father 是定语从句,修饰先行词the man, “who”是引导定语从句的关系词,代替先行词the man,在定语从句中作主语。
(二)关系代词引导的定语从句
1.who 指人,在定语从句中作主语。
The boys who are playing football are from Class One. 正在踢足球的男孩是一班的。

4.That 指人时,相当于who 或whom;指物时,相当于which.。在定语从句中作主语或宾语,作宾语时常可省略。

5.Whose 通常指人,也可指物,在定语从句中做定语。
I visited a scientist whose name is known all over the country. 我拜访了一个全国知名的科学家。

I once lived in the house whose roof has fallen in. 我曾经住在那幢屋顶已经倒塌了的房子里。
注意:指物时,常用下列结构来代替:

(三)“介词+关系代词”引导的定语从句
关系代词在定语从句中作介词宾语时,从句常常由“介词+关系代词”引出。
The school (which / that) he once studied in is very famous.
The school in which he once studied is very famous. 他曾经就读过的学校很出名。
Tomorrow Ill bring here the magazine (which / that) you asked for.
Tomorrow Ill bring here the magazine for which you asked.明天我将把你要的杂志带来。
This is the boy (whom / who / that) I played tennis with yesterday.
This is the boy with whom I played tennis yesterday. 这是我昨天跟他打台球的男孩。

注意:1. 含有介词的短语动词一般不拆开,介词仍放在短语动词的后面。如:look for, look after, take care of 等。

The babies (whom / who / that) the nurse is looking after are very healthy. (正) 那个保姆照看的小宝宝们都很健康。

2.若介词放在关系代词前,关系代词指人时只可用whom,不可用who, that;关系代词指物时只可用which,不可用that。关系代词是所有格时用whose。
The man with whom you talked just now is my neighbour. (正) 你刚才跟他谈话的那个人是我的邻居。
The man with that / who you talked just now is my neighbour. (误)
The plane in which we flew to Canada was really comfortable. (正)我们去加拿大所乘坐的飞机实在很舒服。

3.“介词+关系代词”前还可有some, any, none, all, both, neither, many, most, each, few等代词或者数词。如:
He loves his parents deeply, both of whom are very kind to him. 他深深地爱着他的父母,他们俩待他都很好。
In the basket there are quite many apples, some of which have gone bad. 篮子里有好些苹果,有些已经坏了。
There are forty students in our class in all, most of whom are from big cities. 我们班总共有40个学生,大多数来自大城市。
Up to now, he has written ten stories, three of which are about country life. 迄今为止,他写了10部小说,其中3部是关于农村生活的。
(四)关系副词引导的定语从句
1. when 指时间,在定语从句中作时间状语。
I still remember the day when I first came to this school. 我仍然记得我第一次来到这所学校的那一天。
The time when we got together finally arrived. 我们团聚的时刻终于到了。
October 1, 1949 was the day when the Peoples Republic of China was founded. 1949年10月1日是中华人民共和国成立的日子。
Do you remember the years when he lived in the countryside with his grandparents. 你还记得在农村和你祖父母一起生活的那些年吗?
2. where 指地点,在定语从句中作地点状语。
Shanghai is the city where I was born. 上海是我出生的城市。
The house where I lived ten years ago has been pulled down. 我十年前住的房子已经被拆掉了。
I visited the farm where a lot of cows were raised . 我参观了那个饲养了许多奶牛的农场。
Is this the place where they fought the enemy? 这是他们当初打敌人的地方吗?
3. why 指原因,在定语从句中作原因状语。
Please tell me the reason why you missed the plane. 请告诉我你误机的原因。
The reason why he was punished is unknown to us. 他受惩罚的原因我们都不知道。
I dont know the reason why he looks unhappy today. 我不知道他今天为什么看上去不愉快。
注意:关系副词引导的定语从句经常可以用“介词+关系代词”引导的定语从句来表示。如:
From the years when / in which he was going to primary school in the country he had known what he wanted to be when he grew up. 自从他在农村读小学时,他就已经知道长大后要做什么。
Great changes are taking place in the city where / in which they live. 他们生活的城市正发生巨大的变化。
The reason why / for which he refused the invitation is quite clear. 他为什么拒绝接受邀请的原因是十分明了的。
(五)限制性定语从句和非限制性定语从句
限制性定语从句 非限制性定语从句
形式上 不用逗号“,”与主句隔开。 用逗号“,”与主句隔开。
意义上 是先行词不可缺少的定语,如删除,主句则失去意义或意思表达不完整。 只是对先行词的补充说明,如删除,主句仍能表达完整的意思。
译法上 译成先行词的定语:“...的” 通常译成主句的并列句。

限制性定语从句举例:
The teacher told me that Tom was the only person that I could depend on. 老师告诉我说汤姆是我唯一的可以依靠的人。

非限制性定语从句举例 :
His mother, who loves him very much, is strict with him. 他妈妈十分地爱他,对他要求很严格。
China, which was founded in 1949, is becoming more and more powerful. 中国是1949年成立的, 现在正变得越来越强大。

注意区分下列几组句子的不同含义:
1. Her brother who is now a soldier always encourages her to go to college.

重点疑难
(一)限制性定语从句中只能用that 引导定语从句的情况
1.当先行词是everything, anything, nothing (something 除外), all, none, few, little, some等代词时,或当先行词受every, any, all, some, no, little, few, much等代词修饰时。如:
Have you taken down everything that Mr. Li said? 李老师讲的你都记下来了吗?
There seems to be nothing that is impossible to him in the world. 对他来说似乎世界上没有什么不可能的事。
All that can be done has been done. 所有能做的都做好了。
There is little that I can do for you. 我不能为你干什么。
He stayed in the library and looked up any information that they needed. 他呆在图书馆查找所需的资料。
注意:当先行词指人时,偶尔也可用关系代词who,如:
Any man that / who has a sense of duty wont do such a thing. 任何有责任感的人都不会做这样的事。
All the guests that / who were invited to her wedding were important people. 所有应邀来参加她婚礼的客人都是重要人物。
2.当先行词被序数词修饰时。如:
The first place that they visited in London was the Big Ben. 在伦敦他们参观的第一个地方是大本钟。
3.当先行词被形容词最高级修饰时。如:
This is the best film that I have ever seen. 这是我看过的最好的电影。
4.当先行词被the very, the only修饰时。如:
This is the very dictionary that I want to buy. 这正是我要买的词典。
After the fire in his house, the old car is the only thing that he owns. 家里发生了火灾过后,那辆旧车成了他的唯一拥有。
注意:当先行词指人时,偶尔也可用关系代词who。如:
Wang Hua is the only person in our school who will attend the meeting. 王华是我校唯一出席会议的人。
5.当先行词前面有who, which等疑问代词时。如:
Who is the man that is standing by the gate? 站在门口的那个人是谁?
Which is the T-shirt that fits me most? 哪件T恤衫最合我的身?
6.当先行词为人与动物或人与物时。如:
They talked about the persons and things that they remembered at school 他们谈论着他们所能记起的在校时的人和事。
Look at the man and his donkey that are walking up the street. 瞧瞧那个沿街走来的人和他的 毛驴。
(二)关系代词as和which 引导的定语从句
as 和which 引导非限制性定语从句时, 其用法有相同之处,也有不同之处。具体情况是:
1. as 和which都可以在定语从句中做主语或宾语,代表前面整个句子。如:
He married her, as / which was natural. 他跟她结婚了,这是很自然的事。
He is honest, as / which we can see. 他很诚实, 这一点我们看得出来。
2. as 引导的非限制性定语从句可以放在主句之前、主句之后,甚至还可以分割主句。 which 引导的非限制性定语从句只可放在主句之后。另外,as 常常有“正如、正像”的含义。如:
As is known to all, China is a developing country. 众所周知,中国是发展中国家。
He is from the south, as we can know from his accent. 他是南方人,这一点我们从他的口音可以知道。
John, as you know, is a famous writer. 正如你所知, 约翰是个著名作家。
Zhang Hua has been to Paris more than ten times, which I dont believe. 张华已去过巴黎十多次了,这一点我不相信。
注意:当主句和从句之间存在着逻辑上的因果关系时,关系词往往只用which。如:
Tom was late for school again and again, which made his teacher very angry. 汤姆老是迟到,这使得老师很恼火。
These tables are made of metal, which made them very heavy. 这些桌子是金属的,这使得这些桌子很重。
3.当先行词受such, the same 修饰时,关系词常用as。 如:
Ive never heard such stories as he tells. 我从未听过象他讲的这样的故事。
He is not such a fool as he looks. 他可不象他看上去的那样傻。
This is the same dictionary as I lost last week. 这部词典跟我上星期丢失的一样。
注意:当先行词受the same 修饰时,偶尔也用 that引导定语从句,但与as引导的定语从句意思有区别。如:
She wore the same dress that she wore at Marys wedding. 她穿着她在玛丽婚礼上穿过的同一条连衣裙。
She wore the same dress as her younger sister wore. 她穿着跟她妹妹所穿的一样的连衣裙。
(三) 以the way为先行词的限制性定语从句通常由in which或that引导,而且通常可以省略。如:
The way (that / in which ) he answered the questions was surprising. 他回答这些问题的方式令人惊奇。
I dont like the way (that / in which) you laugh at her. 我不喜欢你冲她的样子。
(四)关系代词与关系副词的选择
用关系代词还是关系副词引导定语从句主要看关系词在定语从句中的作用(即所担当的成分)。试比较:
A.I know a place where we can have a picnic. 我知道一个我们可以野炊的地方。
I know a place which / that is famous for its beautiful natural scenery. 我知道一个以自然景色优美而闻名的地方。
B.I will never forget the days when we spent our holidays together. 我永远忘不了我们一起度假的日子。
I will never forget the days that / which we spent together. 我永远忘不了我们一起度过的日子。
C.This is the reason why he was dismissed. 这就是他被解雇的原因。
This is the reason that / which he explained to me for his not attending the meeting. 这就是他向我解释的他没有参加会议的原因。
(五)but 有时也用作关系词引导定语从句。如:
There are very few but admire his talents. 很少有人不赞赏他的才干的。(but = who dont)
(六)定语从句与同位语从句的区别
1.定语从句修饰限定先行词,它与先行词是修饰关系;同位语从句说明先行词的具体内容,它与先行词是同位关系。
The plane that has just taken off is for Paris. (定语从句) 刚刚起飞的那架飞机是开往巴黎的。
The fact that he has already died is quite clear. (同位语从句) 他已经去世了,这个事实很明了。
2.定语从句由关系代词或关系副词引导,关系词在从句中担当相应的句子成分,关系代词在从句中作宾语时经常可省略。同位语从句主要由连词that 引导,在从句中一般不担当成分;有时也由where, when, how, who, whether, what 等连词引导,这些连词则在从句中担当成分。
The news that he told me is true. (定语从句) 他告诉我的消息是真的。
The news that he has just died is true. (同位语从句) 他刚刚去世了,这个消息是真的。
The problem that we are facing now is how we can collect so much money. (定语从句) 我们现在面临的问题是如何筹集这么多资金。
The problem how we can collect so much money is difficult to solve. (同位语从句) 我们如何筹集这么多资金,这个问题很难解决。
The question that he raised puzzled all of us. (定语从句) 他提出的问题让我们很为难。
The question whether he is sure to win the game is hard to answer. (同位语从句) 他是否一定会赢得那场比赛,这个问题很难回答。
3.同位语从句与先行词一般可以用动词be发展成一个完整的句子, 而定语从句则不能。如:
A.The idea that we could ask the teacher for advice is wonderful.(同位语从句) 我们可以向老师请教,这个主意不错。

1.定语从句在句中作定语用,修饰句中的某一名词(或代词),被定语从句所修饰的词叫先行词。定语从句必须放在先行词之后。引导定语从句关联词有:
关系代词:who,whom,whose,which,that
关系副词:when,where,why, that等。
⒈定语从句试题,主要考查使用关系词的能力。
○1找出被修饰的先行词,分析关系词在从句中的语法作用,确定关系代词:
This is the hospital(that)we visited yesterday.
此句的先行词为hospital,可用which/that,但不可用who,whom。关系词在从句中作visit的宾语,不可用where。
又如:We visited a factory_which or that_makes toys for children.
We visited the factory __where__ Li Ming’s father once worked.
○2掌握 which和that使用上的区别。
a. 只能用which的情况:
(l)先行词是物时,介词后的关系代词应用which,不用that。
This is the home in which(=where)Lu Xun once lived.
若介词不前置,用that也可。
如:The room which/that we live in is clean.
(2)在非限制性定语从句中,关系代词用which.
Last night I saw a very good film, which was about the Anti-Japanese War.
(3)先行词为物,且被that或those修饰时,通常用which。如:

b.在下列情况下,一般用that。
(1)先行词为all, everything, nothing,something,anything,little,no,much,the only,the same,the very,the first,the last,any,every时。如:

c. 当从句的谓语动词是否定形式或从句谓语带有一个复合宾语结构时,一般用which而不用as。

d. as 作关系代词常与the same, such配合使用。

I had the same things as you.

(1) 根据与先行词的习惯搭配。

(2) 根据和从句中动词的固定搭配。

○6使用定语从句应注意的几个问题:
(1)关系代词在从句中作主语时,从句的谓语动词用单数还是复数应由先行词决定。

(2)定语从句有时不直接紧靠着先行词,中间由一个定语、状语或谓语隔开。

现略谈一谈关系代词和关系副词的作用和用法,引导定语从句的关系代词和关系副词在先行词和定语从句之间起联系作用,它们可以作定语从句的一个成分:
一、关系代词可以作定语从句的主语、宾语或定语。
1.who指人,是主格,在定语从句中作主语;whom是宾格,在定语从句中作宾语;whose是所有格,在定语从句中作定语。例如:
(1)This is Uncle Li who mended computers for us.这就是为我们修电脑的李叔叔。
The student who(that)is playing with a yoyo is only seven.正在玩溜溜球的那个学生仅仅七岁。
(2) This is the man(whom)I met in Australian last month.这就是我上个月在澳大利亚遇见的那个人。
The soldier whom you want to see has already come.你要见的那名士兵已经来了。
(3)There is nobody here whose name is Gu Jianfei.这儿没有名叫顾剑飞的人。
My aunt whose photo I showed you yesterday will come to see us this evening.我姨妈今晚要来看我们,她的照片昨天我给你看过。
2.which指物,在定语从句中作主语或宾语。例如:
(1)Take the pencil which is lying on the desk.把课桌上的那支铅笔拿去。
We visited the Jade Buddha Temple, which is in the northwestern part of Shanghai.我们参观了玉佛寺,它在上海西北边。
(2)The factory which we visited yesterday is very famous in the world.我们昨天参观的那家工厂是全球闻名的。
The money which they found in the street is mine.他们在街上找到的钱是我的。
3.that指物,有时也指人,在定语从句中作主语或宾语。指物时,它的'用法和which大致相同。例如:
(1)The comrade that you saw is a combat hero.你见到的那个同志是个战斗英雄。(that作宾语,指人)
Is this the pen that you were looking for?你要找的钢笔是这一支吗?(that作宾语,指物)
(2)The man that called me last night was killed this morning.昨夜给我打电话的那个人今早给人杀了。(that作主语,指人)
There is no difficulty that cannot be overcome.没有不能克服的困难。(that作主语,指物)
[注1]that和which都指事物时,一般可以通用。但在下列情况下必须用that,而不能用which:
1先行词为all,everything, nothing, something, anything, much little, few, none, the one等时。例如:
Say all(that)you know.把你知道的全部讲出来。
Is there anything(that)I can do for you now?现在需要我为你做点什么吗?
This book contains much little that is useful.这本书中有很多(没有多少)有用的东西。
I mean the one that was bought yesterday.我指的是昨天买的那个。
2先行词为数词或被序数词(含last)修饰时。例如:
This is the first film(that)I have seen since I came here.这是我到这里以来所看的第一部电影。
The last place they visited was the Summer Palace.他们最后参观的地方是颐和园。
Look at those presents. You can see the two that you gave me.看那些礼物,你能看见你送我的那两个吗?
3先行词被形容词的最高级或the very, the only等所修饰时。例如:
This is the biggest apple(that)I have ever eaten.这是我所吃到的苹果中最大的一个。
She is the very thief(that)the policeman is looking for.她就是警察正在寻找的那个小偷。
Mary is the only friend(that)I have in Australia.玛丽是我在澳大利亚唯一的朋友。
4先行词中既有人又有物时。例如:Peter and his car that disappeared mysteriously in London in 1987 appeared mysteriously in New York in 1993.彼得和他的小轿车1987年在伦敦神秘地失踪,后来于1993年又神秘地出现在纽约。
We were deeply impressed by the teachers and schools that we had visited.我们访问过的老师和参观过的学校给我们留下了深刻的印象。
5先行词在主句中作表语,或关系代词在从句中作表语时。例如:
This is a dictionary that will help you a lot.这是本对你很有帮助的字典。
Don’t cheat me. I’m no longer the boy that I was three years ago.别骗我了,我再也不是三年前的我了。
[注2]在下列情况下不宜用that:
1.关系代词前有介词时。例如:
This is the house in which I lived ten years ago.这就是我十年前住过的房子。
2.先行词本身是that时。例如:
What was that which he said?他说了些什么?
[注3]whom,which和that在定语从句中作宾语时,特别是在口语中,往往可以省略。例如:
The man(that)you got the news from is a friend of mine.告诉你这个消息的人是我的朋友。
Is that the car(which)you want to buy?那就是你所要买的汽车吗?
This is the little boy(whom)Comrade Li saved yesterday.这就是李同志昨天救的那个小男孩。
二、关系代词whom, which在定语从句里作介词的宾语时,介词一般放在先行词与关系代词之间。例如:
I want to make some friends from whom I can learn a lot.我想交几个朋友,从他们那儿我可以学许多东西。
但是,有时介词也可以放在宾语从句的后面,特别是在省略了关系代词时,介词必须放在定语从句的后面。例如:
The room which(that)we live in is very bright.
The room we live in is very bright.我们住的那间房间很明亮。
三、关系代词which有时指整个前面一句话。这时关系代词前面有逗号,定语从句是附加的说明;which的意思相当于and this。例如:
Tom said he didn’t know anything about Kate, which was a lie.汤姆说他对凯特的情况一无所知,这是撒谎。
The worker didn’t do any work,which made his boss very angry.那个工人什么活也没干,这令老板非常生气。
四、关系副词where, when和why在定语从句中分别作地点状语、时间状语和原因状语。
1.where指地点,在定语从句中作状语,相当于in等+which。例如:
This is the workshop where(=in which)I work.这是我工作的车间。
A booking office is a place where(=in which)tickets are sold.售票处就是卖票的地方。
2.when指时间,在定语从句中作状语。例如:
He came at a time when we needed help.他在我们需要人帮忙的时候来到了。
3.why指原因、理由,在定语从句中作原因状语。例如:
The reason(why)he changed his mind is not clear.他改变主意的原因尚不清楚。下面再略谈一谈限制性定语从句和非限制性定语从句。限制性定语从句是先行词不可缺少的定语,如果省去,主语的意思就会不完整或不明确。这种从句和主句之间不能用逗号分开。非限制性定语从句,只是对先行词的附加说明,如果省去,主句的意思仍然很清楚,它和主句之间常用逗号分开。试比较下列句子:
(1)I have a brother who is a doctor.我有一个当医生的兄弟。(意思是我还有其他兄弟)(限制性定语从句)
(2)I have a brother, who is a doctor.我有一个兄弟,是个医生。(意思是我只有一个兄弟)(非限制定语从句)
[注1]在非限制性定语从句里不宜用关系代词that。因此,凡是that所引导的定语从句,一般都是限制性定语从句。例如:
误:She gave me some flowers, that were very beautiful.
正:She gave me some flowers, which were very beautiful.(非限制性定语从句)
正:She gave me some flowers that(which)were very beautiful.(限制性定语从句)
[注2]非限制性定语从句在口语里很少用,尤其是在对话里,经常是采用简单句或并列句。例如:“I have a brother, who is a doctor.”这句话,在口语里总是说:“I have a brother; he is a doctor.”或说:“I have a brother, and he is a doctor.”

1 关系代词引导的定语从句
关系代词所代替的先行词是人或物的名词或代词,并在句中充当主语、宾语、定语等成分。关系代词在定语从句中作主语时,从句谓语动词的人称和数要和先行词保持一致。
1)who, whom, that
这些词代替的先行词是人的名词或代词,在从句中所起作用如下:
Is he the man who/that wants to see you?
他就是你想见的人吗?(who/that在从句中作主语)
He is the man whom/ that I saw yesterday.
他就是我昨天见的那个人。(whom/that在从句中作宾语)
2) Whose 用来指人或物,(只用作定语, 若指物,它还可以同of which互换), 例如:
They rushed over to help the man whose car had broken down. 那人车坏了,大家都跑过去帮忙。
Please pass me the book whose (of which) cover is green. 请递给我那本绿皮的书。
3)which, that
它们所代替的先行词是事物的名词或代词,在从句中可作主语、宾语等,例如:
A prosperity which / that had never been seen before appears in the countryside. 农村出现了前所未有的繁荣。(which / that在句中作宾语)
The package (which / that) you are carrying is about to come unwrapped. 你拿的包快散了。(which / that在句中作宾语)
☆ 当关系代词在定语从句中充当宾语时,可把关系代词省掉
2 关系副词引导的定语从句
关系副词可代替的先行词是时间、地点或理由的名词,在从句中作状语。
1)when, where, why
关系副词when, where, why的含义相当于“介词+ which”结构,因此常常和“介词+ which”结构交替使用,例如:
There are occasions when (on which) one must yield. 任何人都有不得不屈服的时候。
Beijing is the place where (in which) I was born. 北京是我的出生地。
Is this the reason why (for which) he refused our offer? 这就是他拒绝我们帮助他的理由吗?
2)that代替关系副词
that可以用于表示时间、地点、方式、理由的名词后取代when, where, why和“介词+ which”引导的定语从句,在口语中that常被省略,例如:
His father died the year (that / when / in which) he was born. 他父亲在他出生那年逝世了。
He is unlikely to find the place (that / where / in which) he lived forty years ago. 他不大可能找到他四十年前居住过的地方。
3 判断关系代词与关系副词
方法一: 用关系代词,还是关系副词完全取决于从句中的谓语动词。及物动词后面无宾语,就必须要求用关系代词;而不及物动词则要求用关系副词。例如:
This is the mountain village where I stayed last year.
I'll never forget the days when I worked together with you.
判断改错
This is the mountain village where I visited last year.
I will never forget the days when I spent in the countryside.
This is the mountain village (which) I visited last year.
I'll never forget the days (which) I spent in the countryside.
方法二: 准确判断先行词在定语从句中的成分(主、谓、宾、定、状),也能正确选择出关系代词/关系副词。

例2. Is this the museum ____ the exhibition was held.

4 限制性和非限制性定语从句
1) 定语从句有限制性和非限制性两种。限制性定语从句是先行词不可缺少的部分,去掉它主句意思往往不明确;非限制性定语从句是先行词的附加说明,去掉了也不会影响主句的意思,它与主句之间通常用逗号分开,例如:
This is the house which we bought last month. 这是我们上个月买的那幢房子。(限制性)
The house, which we bought last month, is very nice.这幢房子很漂亮,是我们上个月买的。(非限制性)
2) 当先行词是专有名词或物主代词和指示代词所修饰时,其后的定语从句通常是非限制性的,例如:
Charles Smith, who was my former teacher, retired last year. 查理史密斯去年退休了,他曾经是我的老师。
My house, which I bought last year, has got a lovely garden. 我去年买的的那幢房子带着个漂亮的花园。
This novel, which I have read three times, is very touching. 这本小说很动人,我已经读了三遍。
3) 非限制性定语从句还能将整个主句作为先行词, 对其进行修饰, 这时as和which代替的是整个主句,相当于and this或and that。As一般放在句首,which在句中。并且从句谓语动词要用第三人称单数,例如:
He seems not to have grasped what I meant, (=and that)which greatly upsets me. 他似乎没抓住我的意思,这使我心烦。
Liquid water changes to vapor, which (=and that) is called evaporation. 液态水变为蒸汽,这就叫做蒸发。
☆ As还在以下几种结构中作关系代词引导定语从句
① the same as : He is just the same as he use to be.他还是和过去一样
② such…as : Such passengers as survived the explosing were drowned.象那些在爆炸中幸免遇难的乘客都被淹死了
③ as…as : As many as we found were taken to the hospital.我们找到多少就送到医院
☆关系代词that和关系副词why不能引导非限制性定语从句。
5 介词+关系词 (介词前置:关系代词如果在定语从句中充当介词的宾语,可把介词前置到关系代词的前面,形成介词+关系代词的结构)
1)介词后面的关系代词不能省略。
2)that前不能有介词。
3)如果关系代词是动词短语的宾语,动词短语的介词不能前置
错误用法:This is the girl of whom he will take care.
正确用法:This is the gril whom he will take care of
4)某些在从句中充当时间,地点或原因状语的“介词+关系词”结构可以同关系副词when 和where 互换。
This is the house in which I lived two years ago.
This is the house where I lived two years ago.
Do you remember the day on which you joined our club?
Do you remember the day when you joined our club?
☆另外还应注意的是:
①way后常用that代替in which,也可省略that
I really don't like the way (that) he talks.
That was the way in which the old lady looked after us.
②of which起形容词的作用,相当于whose(用来指物)
They live in a house whose door (the door of which) opens to the south.
③相同的先行词在表示不同的含义时,要根据其含义用不同的介词。

age在前句中意为“年岁”,与at搭配,在后句中意为“时期”,与in搭配。

8定语从句和同位语从句的区别
1)同位语从句与前面的名词是同位关系,即说明它前面名词的内容;而定语从句与前面的名词是修饰与被修饰关系,即限定它前面的名词范围,或补充一些情况。
The news that l hove passed the exam is true.我通过了考试这一消息是真的。(同位语从句,即从句所表达的意思就是前面名词的内容。)
The news that he told me just now is true.他刚才告诉我的消息是真的。 (定语从句,从句对前面名词起修饰限制作用,即“他告诉我的”那个消息,而不是别的消息。)
2) 引导同位语从句的that是连词,在从句中不充当任何成份,而引导定语从句的that是关系代词,除起连接作用外,还在从句中充当主语、宾语或表语等。如:
The idea that computers can recognize human voices surprises many people. 计算机能够识别人的声音的想法使许多人感到惊奇。(that在从句中不充当任何成份。)

篇12:语法重点之四:定语从句
用来说明主句中某一名词或代词(有时也可说明整个主句或主句中一部分)而起定语作用的句子叫作定语从句。
一.词引导的定语从句
1. 关系代词用来指代先行词是人或物的名词或代词
句子成分 用于限制从句或非限制性从句 只用于限制性从句
代替人 代替物 代替人或物
主语 who which that
主语 whom which that
宾语 whose(=of whom) whose(=of which)
例1:this is the detective who came from london.
例2:the book which i am reading is written by tomas hardy.
例3:the desk whose leg is broken is very old.
例4:this is the room that shakespeare was born in.
2.关系代词的用法
(1) 如果先行词是all, much, anything, something, nothing, everything, little, none等不定代词,关系代词一般只用that,不用which。例如:
all the people that are present burst into tears.
(2) 如果先等词被形容词最高级以及first, last, any, only, few, mush, no, some, very等词修饰,关系代词常用that,不用which, who,或whom。
(3) 非限制性定语从句中,不能用关系代词that,作宾语用的关系代词也不能省略。例如:
there are about seven million people taking part in the election, most of whom、are well educated.
(4) which还有一种特殊用法,它可以引导从句修饰前面的整个主句,代替主句所表示的整体概念或部分概念。在这种从句中,which可以作主语,也可以作宾语或表语,多数情况下意思是与and this 相似,并可以指人。例如:
he succeeded in the competition, which made his parents very happy.
(5) that可指人或物,在从句中作表语,(指人作主语时多用who)仅用于限制性定语从句中。
(6) which可作表语,既可指人,以可指物。指人时,一般指从事某种职业或是有种特征.品性或才能的人。which引导的定语从句可以限制性的,也可以是非限制性的。
(7) 如果作先作词的集体名词着眼于集体的整体,关系代词用which;若是指集体中的各个成员,则用who。
(8) 先行词有两个,一个指人,一个指物,关系代词应该用that。例如:
the boy and the dog that are in the picture are very lovely.
(9) 如果先行词是anyone, anybody, everyone, everybody, someone, somebody,关系代词应该用 who 或whom,不用 which。例如:
is there anyone here who will go with you?
3.“介词+关系代词“是一个普遍使用的结构
(1) “介词+关系代词“可以引导限制性定语从句,也可以引导非限制性定语从句。“介词+关系代词“结构中的介词可以是 in, on, about, from, for, with, to at, of, without 等,关系代词只可用whom或 which,不可用 that 。
(2) from where为“介词+关系副词“结构,但也可以引导定语从句。例如:
we stood at the top of the hill, from where we can see the town..
(3) 像listen to, look at, depend on, pay attention to, take care of等固定短语动词,在定语从句中一般不宜将介词与动词分开。例如:
this is the boy whom she has taken care of.
二.关系副词引导的定语从句
1.关系副词也可以引导定语从句
关系副词在从句中分别表示时间.地点或原因。关系副词when在从句中充当时间状语,where 充当地点状语,why充当原因状语。
2. that可引导定语从句表示时间.地点或原因
that有时可以代替关系副词 when, where 或者why引导定语从句表示时间.地点或原因,在 that引导的这种定语从句中,that也可以省去。
三.限制性定语从句与非限制性定语从句
1.二者差异比较
限制定语从句紧跟先行词,同先行词这间一般不加逗号,仅修饰先行词,可以由关系代词.关系副词或that来引导。非限制性定语从句仅作补充或说明,用逗号与主句隔开,既可修饰先行词,又可修饰整个主句,不可用that引导。
2.关系代词和关系副词的选择依据
(1) 弄清代替先行词的关系词在从句中作什么成分,作状语的应选用关系副词,作主语.宾语或表语的可选用关系代词。
3. 先行词与定语从句隔离
定语从句一般紧跟在先行词之后,但定语从句与先行词之间有时也会插入别的成分,构成先行词与定语从句的隔离。例如:
1) this is the article written by him that is poke to you about..
2) he was the only person in this country who was invited
四.as在定语从句中的用法
1. 引导限制性定语从句和非限制性定语从句
(1)as多与such 或the same连用,可以代替先行词是人或物的名词。
(2)as 也可单独使用,引导非限制性定语从句,作用相当于which。例如:
the elephant’s nose is like a snake, as anybody can see.
3)the same… that与 the same …as在意思上是不同的。
2.as引导的非限制性定语从句的位置
as引导的非限制性定语从句位置较灵活,可以位于主句前面.中间或后面,一般用逗号与主句隔开,但which所引导的非限制性定语从句只能放在主句之后。例如:
(1) as is expected, the england team won the football match.
(2) the earth runs around the sun, as is known by everyone.

限制性定语从句
限制性定语从句是对先行词的内容进行严格、明确限定的定语从句,与先行词的意思关系非常紧密。
此时如果把限制性从句移除,先行词的意思就会受影响,意思不完整、不清楚或者有很大的变化。
所以,限制性定语从句是不能移除的。
例如:
Give me the article that tells our company.
把讲述我们公司的文章给我。
(限定的是“讲述我们公司的那篇文章”,而不是别的文章)
Which is the motorb ike that you fixed on the 12th?
哪辆是你12号修理的摩托车?
(限定的是“你12号修的那辆摩托车”,不是别的或者其他日子修的摩托车)

篇14:考研英语定语从句语法讲解
1.结构识别:名词+连接词+句子
从本质上讲句子在很多时候也是一个名词,因此这个结构也可以是这样的:句子+连接词+句子。在这种结构中连接词前面一定要出现逗号,这种结构在传统的语法书中也被称为非限定性定语从句。
【例】Kevin gave us a wonderful training course, which left us a deep impression.
【解析】这个句子的前身应该是这样的:Kevin gave us a wonderful training course. It left us a deep impression. it就是指代前面这个句子,这样两个句子就有了共有的名词,连接两个具有共同名词的句子是定语从句的作用,就可以用which代替it,这样就有了示例中的非限定性定语从句。
定语从句的连接词:
关系代词:who, whom, which, that, as, whose
关系连词:when, where, why, how
介词+关系代词:as和that以及who一般不能接到介词后引导句子
2.定语从句的处理方法
A.按照定语的处理方法将定语从句前置,这种处理方式适用于比较短的和起修饰限定作用的定语从句。
B.在考研中大多数的定语从句起的作用是连接句子,因此我们通常把定语从句从整个句子中独立拆分出来单独成为一个句子,这种处理方法的关键是找到连接词,拆分点就是连接词。对于“介词+连接词”引导的定语从句,拆分点就在介词处。
【例】There is something by virtue of which man is man.
【解析】这句话其实是由以下两句话变来的:
1)There is something.
2)Man is man by virtue of this thing.
这两句话中有共有的名词something和this thing,用which替换掉this thing再把of which提前,得到:There is something of which man is man by virtue.
by virtue of是一个相对固定的短语:by为介词,virtue为名词,构成一个介词短语,of短语修饰virtue。为了保持结构的相对完整性,写作的时候最好把by virtue一并提前,得到:There is something by virtue of which man is man.在翻译的时候可以提前,也可以分译。
【译文】存在一种特性,人之所以为人就是由于这种特性。(或:存在一种使人成为人的特性)
3.定语从句的作用
1.连接两个具有共同名词的句子。
【例】I have three books of which the red is my favorite.
【解析】这是一个很简单的句子,定语从句由of which引导,但是这个句子并不是在修饰和限定前面的单词books。这个句子其实是由两个句子合并而成的:
1)I have three books.
2)The red of those books is my favorite.
这两个句子中有共同的名词books,这样就可以合写成一个句子,此时就用到了定语从句的第二个作用:连接两个具有共同名词的句子。把第二个句子中的those books替换成能连接两个句子的关系代词which,这样就能产生了如下这个句子:I have three books, the red of which is my favorite.为了让整个句子更加紧凑就把of which提到books后面,进而形成了刚才的那个句子。
表示因果逻辑关系
【例】America and Americans were prosperous beyond the dreams of the Europeans and Asians whose economies the war had destroyed.
【解析】这句话中有一个定语从句是由whose来引导的,在翻译的时候也有两种处理方法:
1)美国和美国人的繁荣程度超越了欧洲和亚洲人的梦想,他们的经济被战争摧毁了。
2)美国和美国人的繁荣程度超越了欧洲和亚洲人的梦想,因为他们的经济被战争摧毁了。
而后面就有对应这个句子的考题:The U.S. achieved its predominance after World War II because .
答案:the war had destroyed the economies of most potential competitions.
题干对应刚才句子的主句America and Americans were prosperous beyond the dreams of the Europeans and Asians,在表述上进行了同义替换,而正确选项就是对应whose所引导的定语从句。

一 名词性定语从句
1. 主要包括主语从句,宾语从句,表语从句和同位语从句. 一般由that引起,也可由who, what, when, why,which, whom, whether, how 引起.
2. 主语从句很多情况下都可以放到句子后面,而用代词it作形式上的主语.
3. 形式宾语
4. 由名词性关系代词whatever, whoever,whichever 等引起的宾语从句
5. whether and if 都能引导从句, 但用法有所不同. 当主语从句直接位于句首时,应用whether,而不用if. Whether 后能直接or not, 但if 不能.
Whether he will come or not is not known.
6. 在名词reason后的表语从句必须用that引导, 不可误用because.
The reason why he is often late for class is that hehas the bad habit of getting up late in the morning.
二、定语从句
1. 引导定语从句的关系词有who, whom, whose,that, when, where, why and which. 在非限制定语从句中, 只可用which, who, whose, where , when., 如果指代前面整个句子,多用which.
2. 当引导定语从句的先行词前有all, any, no,little, much, very first 等词, 或先行词前为形容词最高级所修饰时,或先行词为all, anything, nothing, something,everything 时,从句的引导词只能用that.
3. as 可做引导词引导定语从句, 多和such, the same 连用. As 引导的定语从句也可修饰整个句子, 既可放在先行词后,也可放在句子开头.
4. 介词+which/whom/whose从句
5. 代/名+介词+which 从句
6. 同位语从句和定语从句
三、定语从句的关系词
引导定语从句的关系词有关系代词和关系副词,常见的关系代词包括that, which, who(宾格whom,所有格whose)等,关系副词包括where,when, why等。关系代词和关系副词放在先行词及定语从句之间起连接作用,同时又作定语从句的重要成分。
四、定语从句的分类
根据定语从句与先行词的关系,定语从句可分为限制性定语从句及非限制性定语从句。限制性定语从句紧跟先行词,主句与从句不用逗号分开,从句不可省去,非限制性定语从句主句与从句之间有逗号分开,起补充说明作用,如省去,意思仍完整。
五、关系代词的用法
1. that 既可以用于指人,也可以用于指物。在从句中作主语或宾语,作主语时不可省略,作宾语可省略。例如:
Mary likes music that is quiet and gentle.玛丽喜欢轻柔的音乐。(that作主语)
The coat (that) I put on the desk is blue.我放在桌子上的那件外套是蓝色的。(that作宾语)
2.which用于指物,在句中作主语或宾语,作主语不可省略,作宾语可省略。例如:
The building which stands near the train station is asupermarket.位于火车站附近的'那座大楼是一家超市。(作主语)
The film (which) we saw last night was wonderful. 我们昨天晚上看的那部电影很好看。(作宾语)
3.who, whom用于指人,who 用作主语,whom用作宾语。在口语中,有时可用who代替whom, 也可省略。例如:
The girl who often helps me with my English is fromEngland.经常在英语方面帮助我的那个女孩是英国人。(作主语)
Who is the teacher (whom) Li Ming is talking to? 正在与李明谈话的老师是谁?(作宾语)
六、关系副词的用法
(1)when指时间,其先行词表示时间,在句中作时间状语。例如:
This was the time when he arrived.这是他到达的时间。
(2)where指地点,其先行词表示地点,在句中作地点状语。例如:
This is place where he works.这是他工作的地点。
(3)why 指原因,其先行词是原因,起原因状语作用。例如:
Nobody knows the reason why he is often late forschool. 没人知道他为什么上学总迟到。

在考研英语要求大家掌握的各类从句中,定语从句的出现频率是所有从句中最高的,所以老师在这里为大家讲解一下定语从句的用法及相关的注意事项。
定语从句:用来修饰名词或代词的句子,通常放在被修饰的.词(即先行词)或句子之后,由引导词引出。
一、引导词包括:
1、关系代词――which,that,who,whom,whose,as(关系代词有词义,在从句中做主语、表语、定语)
2、关系副词――when,why,where(代替表示时间、地点或理由的先行词,关系副词在从句中做状语)
二、种类包括:
1、限定性定语从句――对先行词修饰限制,通常不能省略,因为去掉限定性定语从句,主句意思可能会不完整。在限定性定语从句中,关系代词充当动词宾语时,关系代词可以省略。
e.g.At first glance this might seem like a strength that grants the ability to make judgments which are unbiased by external factors.乍一看,这似乎是一种优势,因为它可以是人们不受外界因素的影响而做出决定。(2013年考研英语(一)真题)
2、非限定性定语从句――对先行词补充说明,省略之后不会影响主语意思的完整性,往往用逗号把先行词与非限定性定语从句分隔开。
e.g.If it is trying to upset Google,which relies almost wholly on advertising,it has chosen an indirect method:there is no guarantee that DNT by default will become the norm.如果它要激怒谷歌(谷歌主要依赖于广告盈利),就要选择迂回作战了:因为默认安装DNT并不一定会成为主流。(2013年考研英语(一)真题)
三、注意事项:
1、限定性定语从句不能修饰整个主句,而非限定性定语从句可以修饰整个主句,修饰整个主句时,定语从句谓语用第三人称单数。
e.g.He seems to be unaware of the terrible situation,which really worries me.他似乎还不了解这糟糕的状况,让我很担心。
2、定语从句有时用as作关系代词引导,as在从句中作主语或宾语。
e.g.Britain‘s Labor Party,as its name implies,has long been associated with trade unionism.正如其名,英国工党和工会组织的关系由来已久。
3、非限定性定语从句如果用as引导,并且as在从句中作主语,则该从句可以放在句首,也可以放在句中。
e.g.As is well known,practice makes perfect.众所周知,熟能生巧。
4、在下列情况中只能用that做引导词,不能用which:
a.先行词是不定代词(如something,anything,nothing,all,none等)或被不定代词修饰;
b.先行词中即有人又有物;
c.先行词是序数词,或被序数词、形容词最高级修饰;
d.主句中已经有who或which,要避免重复;
e.关系代词在从句中作表语且有类比关系。(e.g.He is no longer the star that he was.)
5、在下列情况中,只能用which做引导词,不能用that:
a.在非限定性定语从句中;
b.“介词+关系代词”的结构中;
c.先行词本身是that,则从句中用which.
6、在下列情况中,只能用who做引导词,不能用that:
a.先行词是泛指人称时,如one,anyone,people等;
b.先行词指人且定语从句与先行词被分隔的情况下。
四、定语从句与宾语从句的区别
1、定语从句是用来修饰限制名词的从句,其在本质上相当于形容词,定语从句有相应的先行词;宾语从句时在句中做宾语的句子,本质上相当于名词,宾语从句没有先行词。
2、定语从句往往在被修饰的词或句子之后,宾语从句在动词、介词和形容词之后。
