When all things are considered, young adults of today live more satisfying lives than those of their parents,in my opinion.

这句话当中的“when all things are considered”和“in my opinion“都显得多余。

Young adults of today live more satisfying lives than their parents.

Due to the fact that our grandparents were under an obligation to help their parents, they did not have the options that young people have at this point in time.

Because our grandparents were obligated to help their parents, they did not have the options that young people have now.

The farm my grandfather grew up on was large in size.

The farm my grandfather grew up on was large.

My grandfather grew up on a large farm.

My grandfather has said over and over again that he had to work on his parents’ farm.

这里的over and over again就可以改为repeatedly,显得更为简洁:

My grandfather has said repeatedly that he had to work on his parents’ farm.

集中注意力:concentrate/focus on; 容易分散注意力:get easily distracted

营养:nutrient, 特定的维生素:certain vitamins;

Greasy junk food lacks certain vitamins for the healthy development of the children, and students without sufficient healthy food might suffer from lack of concentration on their study and they get easily distracted, thus school should encourage healthy eating habit.

垃圾食品:junk food, French fries, hamburgers;

高热量:with high carbs, 油腻:greasy;

儿童肥胖:child obesity;

It is really important for the school to encourage healthy eating habits, and junk food like French fries and hamburgers alike should be banned in schools. Too much junk food with high carbs leads to childhood obesity.

水果类:fruits such as berries, apples, cherries, pineapple, oranges, frozen grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe,

Vegetables - broccoli, carrots, cherry tomatoes, potatoes and sweet potatoes

高蛋白质低热量:high in protein low carbs

School should offer students a variety of healthy food and snack ranging from vegetables to different kinds of fruit. Like broccoli, carrots, cherry tomatoes, and apples, cherries, pineapple are also good choices. They are low in carbs, and vitamin rich.

Hopefully, with proper education, students can make appropriate eating choices.

Since students are getting the proper nutrients, they will concentrate better on their study and also they will be more fit.

【A phenomenon as Reason 1】

First, rarely do neighbors 【语法:表否定的副词置于句首时的倒装现象,是一个很好模仿的语法现象,这里是在主语前助动词,单复数和主语一致;注意:这种语法现象其实也是在强调句子表达的否定意义】exchange pleasantries nowadays, whereas people in the same neighborhood used to greet each other. This phenomenon happens in my apartment building. I have to confess that I am unfamiliar with the person who lives next door, and I am almost sure that he knows nothing about me but my apartment number, although we often bump into each other in the elevator. We may make eye contact a few times, but never ask the other’s name, probably because we are uninterested. Also, I do not think that my neighborhood is an exception to the overall situation.

【Reason 2 stated and illustrated by examples】

In the past, when the financial gap between people was small, people were friendlier. The minor advantage a person had could barely provoke another’s jealousy. Nor could 【语法:nor置于句首时的倒装现象,这里是把情态动词提前到主语前】it be the richer person’s asset be contemptuous of another. As a matter of fact, people used to be generous in offering care or giving a hand. At present, a person can be far wealthier than another, and the richer one may have an annoying sense of superiority, and meanwhile the less privileged may display hostility. China is an example. When my grandfather was my age, he would spare 50 cents from his only dollar to help a neighbor who needed it. Today, a person who works in our office building, who drives an economical car, won’t stop blowing the horn to hustle my boss, who drives an expensive car, just because “expensive cars should go faster”.

Do you think that one needs to take risks to finally reach success, or to keep cautious and careful and take risks less?

Do you think that one needs to take risks to finally reach success 【审题关键词】, or to keep cautious and careful and take risks less?

Many people have the conception that they need to take risks to achieve success. This thought is provoked by the many inspiring stories where entrepreneurs, such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, dropped out of college and started their own businesses. Their bold moves are believed to be the key to their accomplishments. However, these successful individuals are the rare individuals. For the overwhelming majority of people, keeping cautious and careful is more rational.

this thought --- the conception

their bold moves --- dropped out of college

In conclusion, if a person’s goal is to achieve tremendous success, conservatism may be undesirable, because the greater is the risk, the greater is the reward. However, most people, whose objective is to secure moderate success, should keep cautious and careful.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

One’s job has a greater influence on the one’s overall happiness than the one’s social life does.

Our overall happiness is subject to many influences. The two paramount ones may be our jobs and our social lives. Here comes [“套路深”之 倒装句 机会] the question: is one’s job a greater influence than the one’s social life? I would rely in the affirmative [习语].

Before everything starts, a relatively clear definition of happiness is needed. It is fair to believe that prior to other factors, one’s financial security, which relies mostly on the one’s job – stability of the position and the salary, is the fundamental of the one’s happiness. [中心句] One who has difficulty making a living as is desired hardly has the mood to enjoy life’s other offerings. For example, one of my friends is recently suffering from a substantial salary cut and now can barely make ends meet [习语]. His mind is now where the source of income is, and he is obviously absent-minded even though there are friends around. Although he may put the worry aside [put … as

Here comes [“套路深”之 倒装句 机会] the follow-up question. [段落之间的联系不是简单的平行并列,而是 层进/递进] What about a financially secure person? When a job can fully satisfy the person’s economic need, in what ways does the job bring more happiness to the job holder than does the one’s social life? [“套路深”之 设问句 机会] One’s happiness is definitely not limited to [be limited to] how much money the job pays. Feeling needed, appreciated and respected is the next level up [习语]. This is what a job can provide and what a social life may not. [两句合成 中心句功能] [回答前面的 设问] In the job, one makes personal breakthroughs or accomplishments, gets better paid or promoted, feels trusted and admired by the peers, and plays a role that matters. In comparison, the social life may be pleasant but not that fulfilling. Friends like each other and not necessarily need to look up to each other; they enjoy each other’s company but can live without each other; their respect to each other often does not build on recognition on each other’s capability but on shared interests or common personalities.

Admittedly, that is not denying how important one’s social life is. Rarely does [“套路深”之 倒装句 机会] a high achiever at work live happily if he (or she) has nowhere to go except the office. While the job can challenge, frustrate or even irritate the person, the friends can keep the person undefeated, optimistic and delighted.

At this point, one should be convinced that a person’s job plays a bigger role in one’s overall happiness than does the person’s social life. We need to socialize and, to a greater extent, need to work.

ide] for a moment, for the most of time, he struggles.

It is better for children to grow up in the countryside than in a big city. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to develop your essay.

With the development of the transportation system and some residence institution, the world is getting smaller and smaller, and people are not restricted in only one area. In addition to the convenient condition, because there are different places with different cultures, living standards, education environment and other disparity, they are inclined to transfer from one place to the other. Is it better to move around than stay in one place? I believe there are no uniform answers, but in my opinion, I do agree with the claim that to move around is better than to stay in one place.

Most people's growth comes with the transfers in their life. As for me, when I was young I lived in a small county. Because the school in there was not suitable to me, I transferred from my little county to a city to get a better education. As soon as I got to the city, I was amazed that the world here was so different here as my hometown .If I still lived in my hometown, it was impossible for me to make the wildest guess at what the real world looked like. The first transfer has made me to imagine my own life and spur on me to go further. With the confidence, I went into a university which I would never think of it before. The university is located in a different city so that I have to come into another world. Compared with my living city, the one is more complicated in which there are different people, more convenient transportation, more competitive environment. I love all of this very much. Communicating with different students and teachers, I have learned much from them which will benefit me throughout my life and my lifestyle. Now I am in a graduate school also so beautiful that I will never regret my selection of leaving my hometown because the transfer has given me a splendid life.

Also, like we students, there are many adults transferring their work place in order to grasp better opportunities. No matter in industry, in agriculture or in service, workers have rights to choose their work companies which leads them to work from place to place and then they accumulate precious experience and skills to get priorities to others.

People not only transfer in their own country, but also go abroad to get education, work or live through the rest of their life in appropriate countries. We can see that many students including me want to go to the foreign countries to study further and forge ourselves, and that many parents send their little sons or daughters to foreign countries to study. After all, diverse circumstances give persons new experience and broaden their narrow sight, even help them get more comprehensive understanding of the world, the society and our life itself.

However, some people may say that if people move around, they will pay for much such as money, time and energy. It is right to say that it takes one person some time to get used to his or her new environment, new personal relationship which indeed influences the growth of children, the efficiency of our work and the stability of our society and family. And I have to admit that people should make considerate plans before changing their places and may not transfer aimlessly and frequently. But I think sometimes it is just all the friction that has made the world wealthier and more beautiful. Therefore, I still think it is better to travel around than to live in one place.

Evolution of sleep

Sleep is very ancient. In the electroencephalographic sense we share it with all the primates and almost all the other mammals and birds: it may extend back as far as the reptiles.

There is some evidence that the two types of sleep, dreaming and dreamless, depend on the life-style of the animal, and that predators are statistically much more likely to dream than prey, which are in turn much more likely to experience dreamless sleep. In dream sleep, the animal is powerfully immobilized and remarkably unresponsive to external stimuli. Dreamless sleep is much shallower, and we have all witnessed cats or dogs cocking their ears to a sound when apparently fast asleep. The fact that deep dream sleep is rare among pray today seems clearly to be a product of natural selection, and it makes sense that today, when sleep is highly evolved, the stupid animals are less frequently immobilized by deep sleep than the smart ones. But why should they sleep deeply at all? Why should a state of such deep immobilization ever have evolved?

Perhaps one useful hint about the original function of sleep is to be found in the fact that dolphins and whales and aquatic mammals in genera seem to sleep very little. There is, by and large, no place to hide in the ocean. Could it be that, rather than increasing an animal’s vulnerability, the University of Florida and Ray Meddis of London University have suggested this to be the case. It is conceivable that animals who are too stupid to be quite on their own initiative are, during periods of high risk, immobilized by the implacable arm of sleep. The point seems particularly clear for the young of predatory animals. This is an interesting notion and probably at least partly true.

Some people think that they can learn better by themselves than with a teacher. Others think that it is always better to have a teacher. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons to develop your essay.

Most of us can learn how to do something simple on our own with just a set of instructions. However, to learn about something more complex, it's always best to have a teacher. Teachers bring with them varied and useful backgrounds. They've been trained to teach individuals in different ways depending on their style.

For instance, some students learn better by discussing a topic. Others learn more by writing about it. Teachers can help students learn in the way that's best for each student. A textbook or a manual can only give you one way of learning something. Plus they're only as helpful as your ability to understand them. A good teacher can adapt her teaching to your needs.

Teachers help you focus on what you're learning. If you're learning something by yourself, it's easy to become distracted and go on to other activities. Teachers keep your attention on the subject. They also approach a subject logically, taking it one step at a time. On your own, it's tempting to skip parts of the learning process you think you don't need. That can hinder your ability to really understand the subject.

Learning a subject on your own is a very narrow way of learning. You can only use the information you get from the textbook. With a teacher, you get the information in the written materials as well as the teacher's own knowledge of the topic. Teachers can also provide extra materials to broaden the scope of what you're learning.

There's nothing wrong with studying on your own, and a learner can always benefit from some quiet study. For the best possible learning, though, a good teacher is the biggest help you can have.

(1) instructors’ office hours

对话人物: 教授与学生;

对话地点: 教师办公室;

(2) service encounters

对话人物: 学生与工作人员;

对话地点: 校园某办公室;

(3) student interactions

对话人物: 学生甲乙;

对话地点: 教室以外相遇;

如果听力实力不太好的同学可以选择VOA(美国之音)的Special English(慢速美国英语)。

1. The Official Guide To The New TOEFL iBT

2. DELTA’s Key To The Next Generation TOEFL Test: Advanced Skill Practice for the IBT(俗称蓝色Delta)

4. VOA、 Discovery和National Geographic

Part C

6. Delta’s Key to the Next Generation Toefl Test: Six Practice Tests for the iBT (俗称红色Delta )

1、To thealready familiar exampleofthelaw of balance, some other examples may beadded:Beyondacertain point more and better food appears tomean increased needfor medical services. Morevacationsrequiremoreamusements, morehotels, andheavier traffic, andsoforth.

2、It isclear thatmany majorsocietal problems areeither adirectorindirect consequenceoftechnological developments. To the well-known exampleofair and water pollution, afew moremaybeadded:depletionofraw materials andenergy resources, urban congestion, unemployment, militaryarms race, andfrustration with anoverlycomplexsociety. This is not toblame all problems onscience and technology, but simply topoint out theirinterrelationships.

3、As an illustrationof thebenefits tohost theSummer Olympics, we may seemorethanabilliondollars thevictoris suretolandin television and advertising revenue, plus theinestimable prestigeof holding the first Olympiad ofthenextmillennium. Nowonder ithas beenafierce competition.

4、Historyabounds with the examples ofgreat men who madethenormally wasted hoursuseful andproductive. Thomas A. Edisonworked out many inventions between messages whenhewas workingas atelegraph-operator. HarrietBeecher Straw, amother ofsixchildren, wrote parts of UncleTom's Cabinonsheets ofbutchers'paperwhileshewas cooking the toast.BenjaminFranklininhis storyof his life shows anendless number ofsuchefforts.

1、Enhanced Smarts

Wow, this may be the most obvious statement of the post, right? Well, it turns out that reading helps in almost every area of smarts. Those that read have higher GPA’s, higher intelligence, and general knowledge than those that don’t. In Anne E. Cunningham’s paper What Reading Does for the Mind (pdf version), she found that reading, in general, makes you smarter, and it keeps you sharp as you age.

No matter what you’re wanting to do or become, you can’t do it without more knowledge. Reading is an excellent way to get where you’re wanting to go.

2、Reading reduces stress

When I’m reading a book, my mind shifts gears. Where I might have a had a stressful day, a book can easily distract me. Fiction is fantastic for this.Reading an awesome fiction book is perfect right before bed time. Though sometimes it’s hard to put the book down if it’s really good. Still, you’ll be relaxed .

3、Greater tranquility

Reading can soothe like no other. Given that I’m a pretty high-energy person, reading forces me to sit and be still. This daily act of making myself be quiet and still has been nothing short of miraculous for my anxiety and my “fidgety factor”.

4、Improved analytical thinking

That’s right, ladies and germs. Cunningham’s studies have found thatanalytical thinking is boosted by reading. Readers improve their general knowledge, and more importantly are able to spot patterns quicker. If you can spot patterns quicker, your analytical skills receive a boost.

5、Increased vocabulary

It’s no secret that reading increases your vocabulary and improves your spelling, but did you know that reading increases your vocabulary more than talking or direct teaching? Reading forces us to look at words that we might not have seen or heard recently at the pub. In fact, language in children’s books are likely to be more sophisticated than your average conversation.

Increased vocabulary is especially crucial for bloggers or writers. All successful writers will tell you that in order to write well, you need to read. Every day. You’ll be surprised at the words you start incorporating into your writing.

A beefier vocabulary isn’t just for writers though. Knowing what other people are saying and using the perfect words to convey your feelings is a critical part of being a better human. Better listeners are more successful in life.

6、Improved memory

I have an awful memory. Just ask my fiancee. I usually can’t remember what I’ve eaten for breakfast, let alone things like names and addresss. Yet I’ve been finding that I can remember stuff much easier when I’ve been reading consistently. Do I have any scientific data to match this up? Not really. But I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet that reading has somehow given me memory mojo.

7、Improved writing skills

This isn’t much of a stretch, considering that reading improves vocabulary and critical thinking. I feel like a better writer, as I’m constantly surrounding myself with works from people who are better than me. That’s why English classes in High School make you read “the classics”. That’s why art students learn to copy masterpieces, so they know what creating something incredible should feel like.

8、Helps prioritize goals

Many times we’re certain we know what we “really want” in life. Yet I’ve found that activities like reading show me things I didn’t know about myself. My mind will drift to things that I’d really like to do, and it isn’t long that these little lapses in reading start to cycle. The same sort of goals keep popping into my head, allowing me to see what I really want to do.

For example, I’ve been playing music on a consistent basis, but I’ve always wanted to produce and distribute my own music. As I’ve been reading, I’ve found that song ideas and other general thoughts on music keep popping into my head. It’s my times reading that have really pushed me into giving music a serious go.

When you remove yourself from your work environment, you’ll start to see things that you might really want to do, that you’re not doing yet.Reading gives you a chance for your to wander.

It is better to relax by watching a movie or reading a book than relax by doing physical exercise. Do you agree or disagree with the statement?
